Happy Memorial Day!
It's graduation season. My son goes to the Agricultural School of Science. Imagine if a farmer gave the commencement address. Here's a rich, but head scratching piece of advice from his speech. "Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty, but from the strength of an ox comes an abundant harvest." Say what? That wisdom is within our passage today- Proverbs 14:1-18. But what does it mean? Why would experts on personal development say that it contains one of the greatest pieces of advice you could give to people? Let's break open that verse (14:4) a phrase at a time to discover its riches.
Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty.
If it wasn't for the fact that Jesus was laid in a manger, we might not even have a clue what a manger is. But we know it was a feeding trough for animals. So if there are no oxen there is no need to fill the manger with food. "Great, less work!" says the shortsighted, unambitious man. "Besides" he thinks, "I know if I feed that dumb ox, I'll just have to clean up after it." He would much rather plop down in front of the TV than clean up it's plop." I get that. But who's the dumb ox? Consider the rest of the verse-
but from the strength of an ox comes an abundant harvest."
If the man would invest in feeding his ox, he could have an abundant harvest. Sadly, most people are shortsighted. They don't invest in feeding their minds, developing their skills and striving for an abundant harvest with their lives. They would rather take it easy. I don't like those parting words people say, "Take it easy." That is not the advice we should be giving each other. The farmer who said to himself, "Take life easy, eat drink and be merry," God called a fool! (Luke 12:19). We should be encouraging each other to advance the kingdom, not to take it easy. Next time a believer says to you, "Take it easy" you might surprise him and say, "Take it by force!" Why? Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing and forceful men take it by force" Mt.11:12. We are warriors striving to forcefully advance God's kingdom. An easy life is not what Christ has called us to. We are in a war. Fight! Attack! Press the battle. Our King and His kingdom are worthy of such.
So graduates and men of M3, seek an abundant harvest. You have the opportunity before you to sow and reap a great harvest, but you must sow. "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly reaps sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously" 2 Cor.9:6. That's known as the law of the harvest. So if you want an abundant harvest, sow bountifully. Don't settle for less. Strive for more, for God's glory and your honor. He is eager to bestow honors on His multiplying servants. The honors we bestow in M3 are just a pale reminder of that.
Start seeing the opportunities all around you. Jesus lovingly chided his disciples who had come back from a Samaritan village without seeing the harvest opportunities of souls all around them."I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest." Men, we need to open our eyes. There are men all around you at church every Sunday, at Bible studies and on church softball teams that could be part of your abundant harvest. They are there at the altar every Sunday wanting to pray with someone to help them go to the next level spiritually. There's a harvest to reap! Please come to the front at the altar call. If you're new to praying with people there, just come up by me. I'm looking for M3 men to introduce these God seeking brothers to. Please don't first go to the lobby; go to the front. We are in a war. Go to the front. The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Seek an abundant harvest, so seek to enrich and enlist many to become multiplying manly men. Swap phone numbers and email addresses with men you talk with. Then sow follow up seeds- email them within the next 24 hours the M3 stories video (bit.ly/m3-stories) or other enriching info. Then follow up with a phone call. Wouldn't you do that if you really wanted to buy someone's car or house? This is so much more important. This is changing people's lives and advancing God's kingdom and giving you an abundant harvest. I have a special category in my phone contacts for such priority men I meet. I go over that list often and send them texts, video links or give them calls from time to time. I also have a category for all of my M3 brothers. Please do the same. Thanks!
M3 is about helping you have an abundant harvest, a great legacy of many descendants in your spiritual family tree. But you have to make this your ambition, your pursuit. So go to church to fish for men with your fishing glasses on. (The following 1 minute video is about trust, but it well illustrates what I'm talking about. Just click the following link- See the fish!)
The congregation is full of fish! Are you seeing them and seeking to catch them for Christ and His kingdom purposes? Jesus said, "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men" Mt.4:19. Someone once quipped, If you're not fishing, your not following." Let's go fishing! Make it your goal to talk to at least one other man each Sunday about his interest in growing further. Perhaps you could simply ask, "Have you gotten one of these?" Then give him an M3 card. See me Sunday at the altar for more of these cards that have our stories and website links on them.
There are men who may not be as smart as others (they might call themselves a dumb ox, as in our proverb), but they put to shame the scholars who aren't reaching anyone. As it's been said, "An ordinary man using an an effective strategy outperforms a genius without such. He may be a dumb ox, but he can plow. He is unstoppable week in and week out in talking to people. So don't leave church without talking to at least one man about M3 or at least getting his contact info. Be unstoppable in this area as well. You will be so glad you did. An abundant harvest awaits you!
1.-To help you attain an abundant harvest, will you join me in seeking to talk with one or more men each week over the summer about growing spiritually? Swap contact info. If you have cards on you, then you could simply start by saying, "Have you gotten one of these M3 cards?" If he says, "No" share a bit how it has helped you and swap phone numbers and follow up with him. If he says, "Yes" encourage him to join. Also share how its helped you. Teamwork makes the dream work. Let's use the R column on the GREAT scoreboard to also include the points for the people you sought to Recruit. And give yourself 2 points per person in that column. (I'm feeling generous:)
2.-Read through Prov.14:1-18 and pick out one verse or phrase that grabs your attention and share it with us as well and put it on your MP3 card.
Announcements
Men, please warmly welcome our newest member to the team, Horacio De La Torre. He has been saved and serving at New Life Midway for over 10 years and has taught 3rd-5th grade S.S. as well. (Special blessings heavenly blessings await you:) He beats my daily driving by a lot of miles, as he works out near Rockford!
I commend you for committing yourself to seek to score 5 points or more each day. You are giving yourself to GREAT things!
Speaking of the scoreboard, I want thank Sam for helping restore the Scoreboard yesterday. Someone's smart phone had accidentally erased all of lasts week's entries. (Yes, we know who you are:) So some of you who posted scores Friday may not see all your points on the board. I apologize for this. Thus, to be fair, I won't post scores for last week. But do expect to see your week's total points up next Monday. So strive for 5 points a day and faithfully post your points daily. Thanks!
Please remember that when you put points on the board for Monday, it really is all that you did for the weekend.
Congratulations! Here is the list of all of you who blogged every day last week- and almost all of you did- Alex, Andre, Antonio, Armando, Chuy, Dave D, Dave H, Ed L, Eddie M, Flo, Gary, George D, George R, Israel, Jack, James, Mike, Osiris, Ricardo, Robert, Roger, Sam and Vince.
1. Yes. Recruit over the summer.
ReplyDelete2. Proverbs 14: 8The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways,
but the folly of fools is deception.
One of the things I talk to youth about is mental maturity. It's the ability to think through the choices we make and what the potential outcomes could be before we make them. When we are young, our brains our not as developed in this area and we are more prone to taking risks and doing things without thinking them through.
If more people would invest in the youth than the youth would not go astray. Keep up the good works for our Lord Eddie and you will see the fruit of God's harvest.
DeleteI definitely agree. Our youth is very important. I teach one of the classes in children's ministry and after you have their attention you can see the hunger for the word. They are curious and want to learn. After all they are our future. I pray that they get the Holy Spirit and have understanding for the lesson that is being taught.
DeleteThank you for loving the youth!
DeleteThanks for your leadership Eddie!
DeleteEddie, that's a great thing to present to youth. Seeing potential outcomes is a great aspect of wisdom isn't it?
ReplyDeleteWhen the opportunity arises I will step up to the plate.
ReplyDeleteProverbs 14:2 He whose walk is upright fears the Lord, but he whose ways are devious despises him.
This brings me back to what I have stated already. Walk with those whose follows Jesus and your ways will be rewarded. Walk with the devious and the only way you will be rewarded is with hardship.
Okay Mike, and when you step up to the plate the opportunities arise. Seek and you will find.
DeleteAmen when we follow Christ we will be rewarded.
Delete1. Yes
ReplyDelete2. Prov 14:16 "One who is wise is cautious and turns away from evil, but a fool is reckless and careless."
Only by following Christ and His Word will we be able to obtain this wisdom that will enable us to flee evil. Without Christ we will live a careless life that will lead to destruction.
Yes Roger- cautious or careless. O Lord, help us to keep choosing to turn to You.
Delete1.Yes, we're all called to be fishers of men. That is part of the Great Commission.
ReplyDelete2.I like this verse it's a great verse for wives to follow. The wife is a very important part of building a house which i think it also refers to the family also. Proverbs14:1
The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.
Glad you have the heart of a fisherman George.

ReplyDelete2. Proverbs 14:4 (NIV) Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty, but from the strength of an ox come abundant harvests.
Reminded me of that Scott's commercial. "Feed your lawn, FEED IT!
We definitely have to be intentional about sharing our faith. We have to make opportunities.
You're living proof of your words Sam- "We definitely have to be intentional about sharing our faith. We have to make opportunities."
DeleteSam you are a great example of a follower of Christ that is intentional in sharing your faith.
DeleteThanks Sam for the Scoreboard fix.
DeleteSpreading the Gospel would be pointless if it were done for us; we are His hands and feet.
I appreciate the encouragement brothers. I know you guys do the same.
DeleteA quick-tempered man acts foolishly, And a man of evil devices is hated. (Proverbs 14:17 NASB)
ReplyDeleteI must constantly remind myself that when I lose my temper I lose respect and suffer regret.
Please pray for one of my students Ariel. I invited him to church. He said he will come next Sunday. He comes from a gang background but was helped out by the Jehovah's witnesses. He has left the JWs but is interested in spiritual things. Thanks.
I will pray for Ariel Nic. Are you with us on #1? You are our point man at New Life Oak Lawn- so many to choose from- :)
Deleteproverbs 14.7 stay away from a foolish man, for you will not find knowledge on his lips. It reminds me of what Dave G. said about making friends with a smart businessman to learn from.
ReplyDeleteAlright Flo! And help me on #1 as well, okay?
DeleteMy thoughts of breaking bondage is clear. We as brothers (and sisters) know It’s difficult to admit we are in bondage.
ReplyDeleteBut I know It’s easy to be set free from bondage.
Can I tell you why it’s easy to be set free?
Because it doesn’t depend on us, it depends on Jesus.
It’s easy to get set free. The difficult part is for us to admit it and ask for help. That’s the difficult part. But once we do, we’re free. It’s easy to get free.
Can I tell you something about Jesus that maybe we’ve never thought of? He is not impressed with satan. He is not intimidated by satan. He does not have to get a running start to kick satan out of somewhere. All Jesus has to do to get satan out is say, “boo!” That’s it. And here’s the other thing about it. Not only does it depend on Jesus for us to get free if we come to him. Listen, He’s actually already done it. It’s already been done.
1 John 3:8 He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.
It’s already been done.
I'll finish with this prayer: Holy Spirit, I thank you for your words of truth and there is not a hint of a lie. We understand we don't have to hold on to any bondage because we are set free by the blood of Jesus and we are redeem. We thank you in advance for we live from this day forward as a living testimony as witness of joy. Nothing comes easy but we look up to the heavens and pray, thank you father for providing and we do not lack anything. Holy Spirit thank you, for your words of wisdom, in Jesus name I pray, amen.
Okay Marcos. And what are your thoughts on what we covered today? Thanks! :)
DeleteHello everyone! My name is Horacio De La Torre and I am a new member to M3. I was invited by David Garratt and I am excited to be part of a group of men that are on fire for the Lord. I hope to be an asset and learn from each other in the good word. Thank you again considering me.
ReplyDelete1. Yes, we should be well versed in the word and help new followers understand the love God has for them. I will try my best to educate men that are seeking him.
2. Proverbs 14:16 The wise fear the LORD and shun evil, but the fool is hotheaded and yet feels secure.
This verse caught my attention as I read it. Many people know about the LORD or they say they know him but they do not fear him. They feel like they are on top of the world and everything they have is because they have worked for it themselves. I was that fool that was hotheaded and felt that I was untouchable that is unit the Lord humbled me. I can relate to this verse personally. Everyday I wake up and give thanks to the Lord almighty for everything he is doing in my life. I pray for patience and an open heart so I can continue is God work. I give thanks for what I had, have and what is coming. Thank you Lord! One can easily be distracted on our walk and forget what our mission is. Nothing is secured in life but our salvation.
Excellent Horacio! So glad I met you just last Sunday. You are so easy to talk with and hungry for God. You are a great example of what I just wrote about today. There are men out there that if we share with, they may be eager to participate.
DeleteI believe you will have an abundant harvest with us. Best of blessings!
Excellent Horacio. Welcome to M 3 and we are glad to have you
DeleteBrother Horacio, welcome to M3! Such a blessing to have you on board. God bless you :-)
DeleteBrother Horacio, welcome to M3! Such a blessing to have you on board. God bless you :-)
DeleteHoracio welcome to M3. I am confident you will will be greatly blessed as you journey with us as we seek God.
DeleteThere is always room for another soldier to actively fight along side of us in the spiritual battle. I'm glad of your commitment to join with us Horacio. Welcome to M3.

DeleteHoracio, Welcome to M3. I'm looking forward to meeting you in a couple weeks.
DeleteWelcome to M3 Horacio! Excited to to serve with you in kids ministry, M3...;)
DeleteWelcome Horacio to M3. My prayer is truly that you would Advance the Kingdom of God purposefully and intentionally, in everything you do :)
DeleteWelcome Horacio, It was a pleasure meeting you and your family Sunday. God bless brother.
DeleteThank you brothers for your prayers and welcoming me to M3. With prayer All things are possible. I look forward to working together with you in our walk with our Lord.

ReplyDelete2. " the faithless will be fully repaid for their ways, and the good rewarded for theirs." Proverbs 14:14
This says it all, as our reward is Paradise as we await Jesus' return-- as we live for him by faith. All our efforts are for the Kingdom in all we do-- so we must stretch to our limits with Jesus help to enhance his Kingdom.
Amen, all our efforts should always be for the kingdom.
DeleteAmen, Jack! "So we must stretch to our limits with Jesus' help to enhance his Kingdom." Great goals require great sacrifice. A runner does not reduce his speed on the home stretch; he digs deep and runs faster than he has the entire race to be the first across the finish line. Lungs burning, legs aching, muscles tearing, he carries himself across that line. What excuse do we, who are carried in the palm of God's hand, have for not stretching ourselves beyond our limit?
DeleteThose who follow the right path fear the LORD; those who take the wrong path despise him. (Proverbs 14:2 NLT)
ReplyDeleteHere it is Dave, when I talked bondage earlier. Which path are we taking. I'm not impress with satan, (as I explained earlier). But I know my sins are taking care of. Thank you Jesus!
1. Will make the effort to recruit
ReplyDelete2. There is a way that appears to be right,
but in the end it leads to death. Proverbs 14:12
I think this is a great verse to remind us to not only consider our methods but our results.
Delete1. I'm on it
ReplyDelete2. Proverbs 14:13 Laughter can conceal a heavy heart,
but when the laughter ends, the grief remains.
This was my second favorite verse from Proverbs 14, brother Dave, and i am glad you chose it for sharing. I laugh regularly at work, often times to mask the heaviness of my heart. Sometimes the pressure to be the best and make my mark brings me to the brink of tears, as doubt creeps into my mind and the devil whispers lies of failure and inadequacy in my ear. At night, after a long day, the grief remains. It is then, when i can bear it no more that I am forced to my knees and lay my grief at the foot of God's throne. It is a blessing to know that even when we can't do it all, or be it all for everyone, our God can and is. Rather than carry our grief, surrender it to the God for whom nothing is impossible.
DeleteGreat verse it really revels the complexity of the human being and the dual conflict he often finds himself in. Like our new nature fighting our old nature.
DeleteGood verse choice, Dave. It is one of my other favorite verses from this chapter of Proverbs. It definitely shows how many people can hide behind the appearance of happiness while they are heavy-hearted and discouraged. Everyone can use encouragement even if they don't look like it.
Delete1. You will find me at the frontline after each service I attend this summer. I will try and coincide the service I attend with yours so that I can get some M3 cards to help me recruit.
ReplyDelete2. Proverbs 14:14 "The faithless ill be fully repaid for their ways, and the good rewarded for theirs." I read, in this verse, a fine distinction between payment and reward. Our earthly lives instill in us a need to collect payment for our work, but our heavenly life to come will see us rewarded for our manly work...not paid. You pay a man to whom you owe a debt. God owes us no debt; on the contrary, our debt to God was paid in full by the blood of our Savior Jesus Christ...a debt to man or multitude of men could ever repay. If it is payment you seek for the work you do in the name of Jesus (a better job, greater income, or the favor of your fellow men), it is made clear in Proverbs 14:14 that even the faithless shall receive their payment. I think we all know what sort of payment the faithless among us will receive for their lack of faith.
The notion that good acts can buy us God's favor is false. It is not by acts alone that we will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but by our faith in Jesus to deliver us through battle. As Dave has put it, we are in a war, some of us for our own soul, others for the souls of others, and the toll of each battle may seem too great to endure, but we, warriors of God, by our faith, will endure and not know defeat. The mission to which we are called, to multiply manly men, is certainly daunting (for some of us outright terrifying if you're not the kind to speak to complete strangers), but we march into battle with the sword of the Word and the shield of our Faith. What, then, have we to fear?
We will not be paid for this work. A soldiers pay is insignificant in comparison to the reward of knowing their family and countless other families are safe and protected by their work. No amount of pay can substitute returning home from battle knowing their work has advanced the cause of peace and freedom. Our work of multiplying men is its own reward, for we shall reap greatly when we sow greatly. Count your rewards, not your coins. Keep you eyes, always, on how God is already blessing you without expecting further payment. You may be paid weekly or biweekly, even monthly, but God rewards us daily and richly and we are richly grateful each day, or should strive to be.
I humbly ask for your prayers brothers. My work load between teaching, taking classes to further my education, my participation in M3, and the needs of my wife and home are quickly piling up, and I have had moments of doubt in my ability to juggle it all despite my best efforts to manage my time wisely. There simply aren't enough hours ina a day, but I trust that God will help me find a way to continue doing all He calls me to do and has blessed me with the grace to do. Soon, my wife and I will embark on the road to parenthood, and this will only add to my responsibilities, but still, God will make a way, Thank you brothers, and God bless you.
Heavenly Father, we pray for our brother Osiris . He has taken on many good commitments, and desires to do them all well. Grant Osiris wisdom to be able to rightly prioritize all these responsibilities, and that he be given the wisdom to know how he should balance all of them in the limited time he has. Provide that special wisdom and insight in how to best respond in those moments of unexpected emergencies that can pop up in a day. Thank you for this joyful news that he and his wife are to become parents. Direct that guide them to know how to best prepare themselves for parenthood in the midst of all they are doing. Through it all, help them to keep their eyes on you.
DeleteOsiris, I'll keep you in my prayers. Isaiah 40:29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

ReplyDelete2. Proverbs 14:2, whoever fears the Lord walks uprightly, but those who despise him are devious in their ways.
Proverbs 14: 6 > The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge comes easily to the discerning.
ReplyDeleteMockers are too busy criticizing and ridiculing others. They are looking only for reasons, and searching for excuses for why they do not accept or agree with what others instruct or say. They never really listen or pay attention for understanding, but just spout off what they think and feel. Those that are wise are discerning. They listen and search out the validity of what is being communicated. They look at the character of the source, They look at the context of the statements and what was the motivation behind why it was given. But ultimately they will know whether what was communicated is right or wrong or if it is even worthy of being significant by measuring it by the standard of God's truth.
That is great practical wisdom Dave. Bravo.
DeleteGreat advice brother Dave, I am soaking it in :)

ReplyDelete2-Proverbs 14:2 NIV
Whoever fears the Lord walks uprightly, but those who despise him are devious in their ways.
2) The sensible man's wisdom is to consider his way, but the stupidity of fools deceives them.
ReplyDeleteSeek to understand why you do what you do. Where it will lead you and where you want to be lead if you don't like the trajectory change your actions and choose a new one. When we are persuaded we trust, because the fool believes himself to be enlightened he is a prime candidate to be deceived by the lie's he serves; While all the while he believes he will come out on top he simply ends up awaiting eternal sentencing.

This verse hit me hard. I find myself time to time making excuses why I sin. Making myself feel like its okay to do what I do. In reality I'm relying on my own understanding instead of gods understanding. This is why its important to stay in gods word daily so we won't be led astray by are own understanding.
