Th.5.21.15...Prov.13:1-12...Diligence

Diligence
"The precious possession of a man is diligence." Prov.12:27 NAS

Thomas Edison's teachers said he was "too stupid to learn anything." He was fired from his first two jobs for being "non-productive." As an inventor, Edison made over 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at perfecting the light bulb (some claim it was 10,000). As the story goes, a reporter asked, "How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?" Edison replied, "I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps." That's diligence!

Diligence comes from a Hebrew word, meaning "to be sharp." As Edison did, the diligent man sharpens his mind and skills. He gets a bright idea and keeps learning and working to achieve it. He is far from lazy. Proverbs 13:4 says, "The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied." The diligent seek to sharpen themselves through learning from others and from their own successes and failures. They don't look at failure as fatal or as a sign that God is against them. They actually look at failure as a teacher to sharpen them for success. Here's my acronym for FAILURE- Friendly Angel Imparting Lessons Until Results Emerge. Sadly, most people see failure as an enemy to whom they quickly surrender. They don't learn from failure. Do you?

It's been asked before, "If you could pursue a goal in which you knew you could not fail, what would you pursue?" That may help you think creatively, without being paralyzed by fear of failure. But perhaps a better question is this, "What would it take to stop you toward that goal?" Obstacles are sure to come. But if you have become unstoppable it doesn't matter. Remember, you are not from the nation of resignation or procrastination, but determination. Determine to be a life-long learner, to keep sharpening yourself. I'm thankful that you are devoted to this "iron sharpening iron" group. Never stop learning and sharpening yourself. That's good advice to pass on to those just graduating from school. Their higher education is just starting. To get hired and keep going higher, keep learning diligently.

Read Prov.13:1-12. You'll notice "diligence" is mentioned in v.4. It's been said that if you want to succeed, greatly increase your failure rate. Try until you triumph as Edison did. Have you invited men to join M3 or to the Savior, but you slacked off because they weren't interested or you feared rejection? Be diligent. Don't let fear freeze you. FEAR is False Evidence Appearing Real. We are told 365 times in Scripture not to fear- one reminder for every day of the year. So do not fear failure. Learn from it and persevere. Remember, we commend you for your efforts. You even get to give yourself points on the board when you encourage others to join M3 and when you tell others of transformation. You also get to give yourself points for diligently sowing good seeds into your own life via reading and attacking in prayer. You are carrying out the injunction to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" 2 Pet.3:18. Way to grow!

Be diligent. Sharpen yourself to improve in GREAT areas of eternal impact. Notice what Heb.6:10-12 says about this- "God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised."

Ever notice how men will spend lots time and money at the health club? They may even hire a personal trainer to help them improve. That's smart. But many are lazy (the antithesis of being diligent) regarding their spiritual fitness. That's dumb. "For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come" 1 Tim.4:8. We are here to help train men to multiply manly men. Can you think of more valuable training to get and to invite other men to get?

Many successful people have given this timely piece of advice- Invest your time and money in lifetime learning. Be diligent. Stay sharp. Don't get dull. Keep learning. The apostle Paul put it this way- "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth." 2 Tim.2:15 NAS.

Darren Hardy knows a little bit about diligence to improve and succeed. He is the CEO of Success magazine and has interviewed hundreds of successful people. He states, "If you’re looking to improve, just reading a bunch of books about improvement isn’t enough. It takes time, persistence, and deliberate practice in a narrow range of activity to truly improve. You don’t succeed just by learning. You have to study, then do." Our M3 blog motivates our studying and our GREAT scoreboard motivates our doing. You're on the right team to grow. Just be diligent. "Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress" 1 Tim.4:15. That's the theme verse of our GREAT scoreboard. It's a great thing to see the progress of so many of you.

1.-Will you be diligent and set a goal to score 5 or more points a day in GREAT areas on the scoreboard? If not, why? (Don't become lazy, but imitate those who are doing such and even double that. You will be eternally glad you did!)

2.-Share a time when you diligently sharpened yourself through study or training to achieve a goal or a new job. Or perhaps share a time when your lack of diligence hurt you.

3.-Write on your MP3 card any verse or phrase that impressed you from Prov.13:1-12 and then be on the look-out to share it with others.

How beautiful to see so many of you being unstoppable, keeping your word of "No Scripture, no sleep." Keeping commitments is the test of our manhood. You are whatever it takes men! You are diligent!

Please give a word of encouragement to the following people were all MIA yesterday- Guillermo, Ismael, Marcos, Nic and Phil. Please give them a call, especially if they are in your fire team.

    2. January of last year I felt I was really out of shape so I decided to pick up running. I started with a program I found online called: "From couch to 5k". It was very hard for me at first and only running one lap at gym felt impossible but slowly with perseverance I was able to run a 5k without stopping. So I signed up for a couple of races and really enjoyed the competition.
I soon found myself desiring to run further so I signed up for a training class to run a 10k, again running a longer distance was hard but also exciting. At times it felt impossible. Someone that really encouraged me was our pace leader that was a lady that was 8 months pregnant and had been running for over 15 years and was going to compete in a half marathon the following month.
The runs she was doing in the class were just to maintain her training and be able to share her enthusiasm and knowledge of running. She surely was an inspiration to all of us newbies.
So last summer I ran in a couple of 10 k's and slowly improved on my time. During the winter I kept running mainly on the track at the gym and on the treadmill. So once January of this year came around I was ready for a new challenge so signed up for a class to train to run a half-marathon. The class was 12 weeks long and began the second week in February.
Throughout the years I had seen people running when it was freezing outside and always felt those people are crazy, never did I think that I would soon be one of those crazy people. Saturday mornings at 7am I would meet with our running group and do our long runs, many times the temperature was close to zero and wished I would have stayed in bed sleeping. But I knew that this training was crucial if I ever wanted to complete a half-marathon so I just stuck with the program. One of the greatest motivators for me was having a group of friends to run with on those cold morning. I would have never done it alone.
On May 3rd I was able to run a half-marathon and complete it in my desired time. I actually got the best time of all of my friends I trained with. I was really excited and happy I was able to accomplish this goal.
The same in life, we will face those cold days when we would rather sleep in but with the help of others and our faith in God we need to continue our walk towards Him.

I truly believe good blessed me for being diligent and committed to his house.

    2. Working for a previous employer I was asked to do a lot of data entry. Spreadsheets and Excel. At first I was a pretty basic user. It was taking above average time to put information in the system. As I got better I started to learn and pursue more education. So I found keyboard shortcuts and different formulas that would help expedite the work flow process. I started getting asked by others for help in these areas. So much so that I was then asked to lead our data management system for all of our clients. Before I left that job I was leading a multifunctional team to develop ways to better our client services tracking and information entry. Quite amazing now that I think about it some more. The hard work and diligence was sharpening me.

I procrastinated on getting an IT certification. I was told that I would get a raise and the test paid for. I bought the book and the test voucher. I didn't do much studying for three months. I had to do something different. I set a test date and began studying more. I took the test and failed it. I wasn't too worried since I bought a two test voucher with the study app. Plus, I missed passing by a few questions. I set the next test for a couple weeks. Studied some more and failed the test again. I was crushed. I am not used to failing. I was determined not to fail again, especially because I had to show my children the lesson of not giving up. Plus, it cost me almost $300 for another test. I read the book, took better notes and understood the material versus trying to remember it. Third time was the charm.

I haven't received my raise or the money for the test. Could be due to putting in my two weeks notice :) I am starting a new job and it is strictly related to what I have been studying. Thank you God. Had I done this earlier I probably would have received a raise and test paid for before I quit. It still paid off! Don't procrastinate and never give up. Especially in doing God's work.

  9. "What would it take to stop you toward that goal?" Reminded me of how adult elephants have been trained to be tethered to a spike in the ground and a rope around their hind leg even though they can easily break away. This is possible because at an early age their hind legs were chained to a large tree and struggle as they may, they learned they couldn't break free. So as adults, they still believe there's no sense in trying. Sadly, far too many of us have the same mentality, held back by our past failures. "Failure is not final" (Author unknown)

"Determine to be a life-long learner" Reminded me of the saying "If we stop learning, we stop living. If we stop living then we're as good as dead" (Author unknown)

I am also affiliated to a mentoring program for car restoration for the youth and young adults and I am part of the board so that is stressful but I am diligent to being a great example of being a soldier regardless of past situations that have brought me my consequences now. I stay in prayer and read the blog and speak to people and faith keeps me strong, courageous and moving forward, God willing it will all come to pass and new doors will open for better business opportunities in the future. 2. I am a teacher with seveal years of experience under my belt. I did my due diligence in receiving my undergraduate degree in Political Science and, not being satisfied with my level of proficiency, continued on to a graduate degree in Education. One of the greatest lessons I took away from graduate school was the importance of self-reflection. As a successful teacher, it is easy to fall into the comfort of knowing you're on top of your game. If you just keep doing the things that have resulted in success, you'll always be successful, right? Why reinvent the wheel when you can recycle last year's lesson plans year after year? When you take the time to pause and reflect on your performance, both your triumphs and your failures, you quickly learn that there is ALWAYS room for improvement.

I write new lesson plans every year. It drives my wife crazy to find me using up the better part of my Saturday to hammer out the caliber of lesson I hold myself to. In all honesty, there are days when I am tempted to be like some of the poeple I work with, reuse a lesson plan, and take a whole weekend off. Then I remember that God has blessed me with this gift. Like a wise father, he didn't hand me the keys to a brand new, straight from the dealership car. No, he gave me the keys to a fixer-upper. God has given me the grace to teach...it is up to me to invest time in this gift, that it may accrue glory and honor for the God that gave it to me. Like the servant who took his share and buried it in the field, I could be content with being mediocre, second best, just good enough...but we all know the fate of that servant. I'd rather be the servant who invested his share and multiplied it for his master.

I am back in school, now. Just had my second day today. I am still holding down my full time teaching position by day and attending classes downtown by night. I kiss my wife goodbye before sunrise and don't get to kiss her again until after sundown. On days like this, I often wonder what I've gotten myself into, but I am strengthened by the knowledge that I am sharpening the tools with which the Father has blessed me. Quite frankly, I feel more manly when I have put in a long, hard day's work. I sleep a lot better when I go to bed with the peace of mind that my share is not buried out in some field, but earning interest and growing each day.

    3. Proverbs 13:12 "Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life." Do not put off hoping in the Lord. It is better to hope and not see your hopes fulfilled, than to go through life hopeless. Do what God empowers you to do to see your hope fulfilled, but place your trust in Him, not your own ability. When at last, and in God's time, your hope is fulfilled, you will experience that indescribable joy that comes with knowing that your trust was well placed and that you now possess the reward for placing your faith in the Lord that gives us reason to hope.

A long while ago, (when we only had our first daughter) my wife and I went to a parenting presentation and decided to invest our money and time on this extensive video training material for parenting called “Growing Kid's God's Way.” It has 18 sessions, which include watching video lectures, a lot of reading homework and having to answer these hard essay type study questions. It took much diligence to complete the training program the first time. We gained much wisdom from the instruction that transformed our parenting to become based on Biblical principles. We've gone through the material several more times since then, for our own refreshment training, and sharing it with interested parents. Our children are all young adults now. But we just purchased an updated version of the material and are now again going through it with them in preparing them for their future rolls as parents.

    2) I can think of a time when I wanted to join the National Honor Society. I not only made it into the National Honor Society in high school but in fact became president of our National Honor Society. It was not easy to make it but I never gave up. You can never get your prize if you go half way. The road was tough. I've learned to have people around me that will encourage me to do good. And stay away from those who try to put me down. Let's never give up my brothers.

  23. 1.-I am willing to diligent to set a goal to score 5 or more points. This is an opportunity to share the Gospel with our friends and invited them to church. Our goal is to help them established a relationship Jesus.

    2. - When I become a Christian a while back, was because God called to him. I was broken and had hit rock bottom. I was done not knowing the truth about life and gave my life to God. I diligently because faithful to Sunday service and started reading my bible. I believed God’s promises in my life and through his promises I began to slowly gain my life back. I was back track following God’s path and reading my bible. I felt at peace and full of life that I shared the good news of God to all my friends and family members. It was amazing and to this day I feel good in time of trouble and in times of happiness and I will thank the Lord always. Amen.

  25. 1) No, I most likely will and have been but I want to be careful not to over extend my commitments.
    2) Diligence came natural whenever I wanted something bad enough, What I need to work on is diligence when the desire fades, in other words character based on principles that superimpose themselves on the will. I applied diligence to learn of God in his scripture, when I went to automotive school, when I wanted my wife's heart, and presently as I strive to learn MMA. No effort no reward.
    3) 13:12 Delayed hope makes the heart sick, but fulfilled desire is a tree of life. I like this one because I believe it conveys the truth that not all hope rewards. For instance, unrealistic expectations of a spouse can leave you deeply disappointed, Trusting God to do something that he hasn't promised you or doesn't intend to do can be deeply frustrating and angering if you assume the promise is to you when it's not. Or faith in faith, " I just believe" . But when we trust in God's words as he intended them to be understood our hopes will be realized, even if the wait is long God must submit to his character. I think it also communicates that achieving goals and attaining desires is motivating and fulfilling and I believe we can use this truth to our advantage. Make short term goals, go after them, and take them by the force of diligence.

    2. There was beginning of my walk in Christ where I was chosen to preach aND teach in a ministry. I didn't know where to start and that created "fear" (false evidence appearing real) , intimidation that other may know more. But through godly wisdom & through some great man, prayer and of course by God's grace I was able to be determined to seek and dive into His word. By perseverance and endurance one is being built up in a Godly character.

2 – The travel manager where I work got upset and quit without giving any notice at the end of last year. My boss asked me to take over our corporate travel program. I worked with travel a few years ago so I was familiar with corporate travel but I didn't know the current systems. Over the last few months I’ve gotten up to speed on the system, researched other options and started recommending changes to the system to save the company money and improve the experience for our travelers.

I too recall earlier on in my IT carrier that I needed to certify to be able to move on in position or even look for other places to work. I soon went on to find that this alone was not the best possible solution. I also needed to finish achieving my degree. I endeavored to complete classes which were needed. Ultimately I finished in 2012 after 7 years and much delay and thinking that working where I was currently, was satisfactory. Which ended up being that it was not satisfactory

  30. The one who guards his mouth preserves his life; The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭13‬:‭3‬ NASB)

How many fights, altercations and death occur over an unruly mouth? More than one can count. So much damage has come from my lips and could have cost me my life. I'm grateful for God's grace. I need to take greater care of what comes from these lips.

    2. in 2014, that was the first year I went thru the entire bible in one year (the New Living Translation), so I set a goal to do it again this year 2015, so I am going thru the NASB version of the bible this time. Thank God I am persevering and being diligent to finish it again in one year. This is on top of all of my other bible studies and homegroup :) Woo Hoo, God is growing and stretching me :)

  32. I was diligent when working on my master’s degree. I was teaching all day and then 2 days after school (one course was all the way up in the north suburbs) and all day Saturday I would go for classes. I ended up finishing my degree in one year (just in time to leave for Singapore).

Verse 12 stands out a lot. I think God put certain plans and purposes in our hearts and when we don’t have enough courage to follow them we feel the disappointment. I shared with a co-worker about why I don’t buy into the big bang theory. He wasn’t very receptive, but I feel good that I still initiated that conversation; there are too many other times when I chickened out.

  33. 1.- yes. 2.- Years ago in the late 70,s I remember hearing about the electrical trade apprenticeship program taking applications, I new it was nearly impossible to enter if you were not a son of electrical contractor or your family members were not in the trade. It was a close nit trade and if you had no sponsor it was impossible to be accepted, plus no offense, I was not also Irish. I still did not let this stop me from applying, I went about the task finding out how to apply, sought community programs that prepare you for the testing and interview. In the interview things were not going well, review board all but were set to refuse my application when one board member asked me how did I know of the apprenticeship program, I mention that I heard it from a friend of my brother who I named, when they heard his name they all new him well and there attitude completely changed and they accepted me. Still it was the beginning of my 4 years of training and it was challenging that 1st year being accepted, not being connected with someone in the trade. Eventually we all bonded because we were going through the rigorous program together, that was 1979 and I'm still going somewhat strong at a slower pace. Ultimately all this came about through God's hands, He has always bless me by putting me at the right place at the right time. 3.- Prov.13:12 "Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life."

  34. 1. No. I will be going through a lot of transitions over this summer and fall, and I really want to make sure that I don't over extend myself (I take commitments very seriously). Nevertheless, I'm going to try to find more ways and opportunities to encourage others and to share what I'm learning, so I will be striving to do more than I have been doing anyway. (On a side note,I do realize that I recently have already been sharing stuff with friends, yet I'm forgetting to give myself credit on the blog for it).

    2. A few years ago, I took my first Spanish class at school. During that time, I was very burdened from school (it was my first year going full time) and some health issues I was dealing with. At the time, I was doing well in all my classes except Spanish. With Spanish, I felt very overwhelmed with all the quizzes, homework, and online work that I had to do. I finally had enough
when I went to class without realizing that a quiz was to be taken. I then received an F in the quiz. After receiving that grade, I was determined to do better in the class. I worked over-time with it, studying for hours and skipping plans with my friends in order to better prepare for the class. My teacher was so impressed by the improvements I made that he even announced how I turned around to the class. In the end, while I thought I was getting a B in the class, my teacher revealed to me that I had earned an A, telling me that my hard work had payed off.

  35. As a child in grammar school I was told by a teacher that I will never make anything out of my life. I was fourteen at the time. Years later after I graduated from the Police Academy and had my College Degree in my and I went back to my old grammar school and found the same teacher still teaching. I was in full Police uniform when I went to the school. I informed her of my name and asked her if she remembered me. She stated she did and she always knew I would become something in life. She asked me to speak to her glass. I told the students to stay away from drugs and gangs. I told them to study hard and make goals for their life's. Than I told them to never let anyone tell them that they will never become something in life. If they want to succeed in life they have to work at it. This was before I had a personal relation with the Lord. Otherwise I would have mention the Lord first.

Proverbs 13:5 The righteous hate what is false, but the wicked bring shame and disgrace.

When thing feel like they are going south I remember the story of Job. I try to have a heart of Job. The man had everything and loved God with all his heart. When Job lost everything he still loved God. God rewarded him for his love and faithfulness and gave everything back to him. So if we can have a heart like Job than we can overcome anything.
