Wed.9.23.15...Devotion and Betrayal...John 13:1-20

Welcome to Part 2 of John's gospel (ch.13-21). The first part (ch.1-12) focused on Jesus' messages and miracles to the crowds as he moved from place to place. This second part focuses on Jesus in Jerusalem. The first portion (ch.13-17), Jesus prepares his disciples to take over his mission after he is gone. Just as Jesus was sent by the Father, he will send them. The events that follow (ch.18-20) also are set in Jerusalem. Only the conclusion (ch.21) is away from Jerusalem, back by the Sea of Galilee. Okay enough of the overview of part 2. Let's dive in.

I hate to cut chapter 13 in two because the threads of betrayal tie it together. But for sake of your time, we will look at the second half of the chapter tomorrow. Hopefully you'll forgive me. Speaking of forgiveness, you'll see forgiveness enacted by Jesus as you read John 13:1-20. Foot washing was a common practice in Bible times when people walked with sandals on dusty paths. It would have been very rude not to have your servant wash the dusty feet of your guest, or at least offer him some water to do so (see Luke 7:44). Jesus makes it clear that the person who has bathed doesn't need a whole bath again, just his feet washed. Paul powerfully brings this to light when he exposes the filthy past of many of us, ending with such cleansing, good news- "Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God" 1 Cor.6:9-11. So was Jesus instituting foot washing as a church practice or something to bring about world peace? I don't think so.

There are churches that occasionally will have a foot washing ceremony. I'm not saying the practice is outdated. I've led a few of those. But such occasions are so few and far between, involving so few people. I don't see how even those churches that do so can feel like they are really carrying out the practice of this passage. Do you really think if Jesus gives a command that we should feel good about obeying it if we do it only once in a blue moon? I think at the heart of what Jesus enacted is not about our feet, but about our hearts. Do I have the Lord's heart of love and forgiveness to wash off the dirt, the sins, of my brother's daily fallen walk with God and especially with me? Here's what Jesus said we should do when a brother sins against us- "If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, 'I repent,' forgive him" Luke 17:4. Wow, that would be one rude dude to be so offensive in one day! But if he came back with his dirty feet, repenting, I am to wash his feet with forgiveness. Think how often each day the Lord washes our dirty feet. Our call is to be like Christ, to follow his example. Jesus said, "I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you" John 13:15. I think the example we are to follow is to wash off the dirt on others, to forgive those who wrong us or hurt our feelings. If we don't forgive from the heart, we are in deep weeds with God (Mt.18:21-35). On the other hand, "Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them" John 13:17.

You and I are to forgive each other, "just as in Christ, God has forgiven you" Eph.4:32. But what if the person has not come back to say, "I'm sorry, I repent. Would you please forgive me?" Some think they don't have to forgive until then. But that keeps such Christians full of bitterness and unforgiveness. Jesus taught us to pray, "Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us" Mt.6:12. The word forgive has the idea of "sending away." If you don't send back the unwanted item, it stays with you. So get rid of it! Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself- the gift of freedom and peace within. It doesn't mean that an unsafe and unrepentant person needs to be invited over to eat. But forgiveness does mean that you begin with a heart of forgiveness, regardless of their response. If the person is dead or can't be located, forgive them too. Give yourself that gift. If you are having a really hard time forgiving someone, that's what we're here for. There's help and healing when we confess our struggles and sins and get prayer support- "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective" James 5:16.

1.- Read John 13:1-20. Is there anyone you need to forgive? Wash their dirty feet with God's forgiveness, which he has poured out so abundantly upon you. Without mentioning his or her name, write a brief prayer of forgiveness. It could be as simple as this- "Because Jesus has forgiven me so much, I choose to forgive X of his/her wrongs against me."  If you're good with everyone now, perhaps you could write a prayer of celebration of how God helped you forgive someone who had wronged you in the past or of his great forgiveness of you.

If the enemy keeps bringing the offence to mind, keep bringing what Jesus has done for you to mind. Replace hard thoughts with forgiving thoughts. Bless those that curse you.

2.- Contact one or more of your wingmen and pray for them, especially if they need prayer regarding forgiving a person. Also find out how they are doing on their GREAT SMART goal they set Monday.

One of my goals is to daily read God's word to my wife. I almost forgot yesterday. I remembered late last night, so I went up from my basement office to read to her in bed. Thankfully, she was still awake and appreciative ;)

Remember I said, that this upper room discourse (ch.13-17) is Jesus' final training of his squad of manly men take over the mission upon his soon departure. For a team to succeed, it has to work well together. Yet we know that when people work together, there will inevitably be offenses and hurt feelings. Thus, Jesus didn't waste his time simply washing their feet. He was illustrating in an unforgettable way the great importance of forgiving, of cleansing the dirty feet of others. He certainly does that with us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness" 1 John 1:9.

3.- I commit to you, to forgive you, to wash away whatever sins you may commit against me. We will work through such. Will you do the same for me and for your teammates?

We are not quitters, we are conquerors!

    2. There are times that I don't have a specific individual that I wronged or wronged me. However we live in a fallen world, we wrong others knowingly or unknowingly. In these instances we need to forgive anyone who might have wronged us; and ask for forgiveness from those we wronged. Thanks for posting brother Edward.

    3. I pray that you will forgive me, brother. I have not been my brother's keeper when it comes to you. I have filled my days with tasks that are meaningless to my spiritual growth and have been a terrible wingman. I want you to know that you are in my prayers, and that I will make a more conscious effort to respond to your emails. My God bless you, and may you continue to do the Lord's work as He has blessed you with the ability to.

  13. 1. I've learned that forgiveness is first and foremost a decision/choice I make, then I can begin healing. Much like physical healing, emotional healing can be nearly instantaneous or progressive depending on the severity of the injury. At times, it may also require therapy in the hopes of regaining full restoration/reconciliation.

Lord, I pray that you would give me the supernatural ability and strength to forgive and love those who knowingly or unknowingly cause me an offense. Just as you have forgiven me for my many sins, those in the past and the ones I'm yet to commit. I also pray that you would give others the ability to forgive me as well when I'm the transgressor/offender. In Jesus' name I pray, that you may be glorified and magnified, amen!

  14. 1-John.13.12-16.nkjv
So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.

"Another cause of dissension had arisen. At a feast it was customary for a servant to wash the feet of the guests, and on this occasion preparation had been made for the service. The pitcher, the basin, and the towel were there, in readiness for the feet washing; but no servant was present, and it was the disciples’ part to perform it. But each of the disciples, yielding to wounded pride, determined not to act the part of a servant. All manifested a stoical unconcern, seeming unconscious that there was anything for them to do. By their silence they refused to humble themselves. DA 644.2
How was Christ to bring these poor souls where Satan would not gain over them a decided victory? How could He show that a mere profession of discipleship did not make them disciples, or insure them a place in His kingdom? How could He show that it is loving service, true humility, which constitutes real greatness? How was He to kindle love in their hearts, and enable them to comprehend what He longed to tell them? DA 644.3
The disciples made no move toward serving one another. Jesus waited for a time to see what they would do. Then He, the divine Teacher, rose from the table. Laying aside the outer garment that would have impeded His movements, He took a towel, and girded Himself. With surprised interest the disciples looked on, and in silence waited to see what was to follow. “After that He poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith He was girded.” This action opened the eyes of the disciples. Bitter shame and humiliation filled their hearts. They understood the unspoken rebuke, and saw themselves in altogether a new light. DA 644.4
So Christ expressed His love for His disciples. Their selfish spirit filled Him with sorrow, but He entered into no controversy with them regarding their difficulty. Instead He gave them an example they would never forget. His love for them was not easily disturbed or quenched. He knew that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He came from God, and went to God. He had a full consciousness of His divinity; but He had laid aside His royal crown and kingly robes, and had taken the form of a servant. One of the last acts of His life on earth was to gird Himself as a servant, and perform a servant’s part."(Desire of Ages, Ellen G. White )

    2 - Will do.

3- Oh Lord our God, I lift up you name on high Jesus, you are our King, the creator of all that was, is and is to come. Oh lord give us the mind of our lord Jesus who being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:6-8.

  15. 1. This is a sensitive topic for me. It comes easy to me to forgive those people in my life who have wronged me. Having wrong others myself, I can understand their human nature and their sin nature and so, as I would desire to be forgiven after making amends, I can also forgive others. Where I struggle with forgiveness is in my relationship with God. Perhaps I am simply going about it the wrong way, thinking more like an angry youth than a wiser man, but God isn't human...He is without Sin...He is perfect. I struggle to forgive a perfect being when He allows so much pain. My father died in my arms...I was powerless to help him. My mother is without her husband of 24 years; she still cries herself to sleep ten years later. My younger brothers grew up without a father to help them become men. I have weathered manhood without the wisdom of my superhero, and it has been painful. Surely, God must have had a reason my simple human mind cannot comprehend, but I am a teacher. It is my job to help those more simple minded than me understand complex ideas, and boy do I try. I shower my kids (my students, being as how they are the closest I might ever come to having children of my own) with love, compassion, patience, and understanding...skills I had to pick up in the 19 years I had a father to learn from. Turns out I'm broken and can not have children of my own without jumping through hoops. I get to be father, brother, uncle, best friend, therapist, and number one fan to children that aren't my own...I don't get a father's day. My wife was abused by her father, and though she longs to do right by a child of her own, I can not give her that. I can forgive a fallible, mistake-prone human being...I find it hard to forgive a perfect, almighty, all-powerful God who sees me day after day, knows my heart and the pain it carries, knows my mind and its thoughts, knows my future and how bleak it sometimes seems to me. I suppress those thoughts...I beat myself up for having them, and yet I am beginning to feel like I am in an abusive relationship: I know He loves me...He is good and kind, but He has hurt me. I just don't know what would become of me without Him. So I stay, and I carry the pain, holding my breath until the next time, wondering what form the pain will take on next.

    1. Thank you for sharing your heart and your pain. At the risk of being like Job's friends, I'll respond with a few thoughts that I hope help and are not insensitive to your hurt. Most of these thoughts, you probably already know.

This world is messed up, and in some sense, there is something wrong with everything. This is not God's fault; it is ours collectively for in Adam and Eve, the human race rebelled against God. As a result, the universe fell. Now, people die; people bodies don't work right; there is physical pain, emotional pain, relationship pain. While God did not cause this, He too experienced it. His Son lost his close friend to sickness (as we read in John 11), the Father lost his own Son to death. He literally knows what it is like, and it sounds like He has been helping you through the last 10 years. He is a father to the fatherless, and it sounds like He is using you by extension to be His hands in doing some of that too.

Forgiveness is basically not requiring that someone pay us the debt they owe us for sinning against us. By definition then, you can not forgive someone that has not sinned against you. You can be angry at God, you can feel hurt by God's actions or inaction, and He will walk closely with you through all of it. But you will have a very hard time forgiving God, since there is no debt that He owes you that you can release Him from.

It is us, as the human race, that need to beg your forgivness. Osiris, please forgive me. It is my sin, as part of the human race, that brought death to Adam and descendants, including your own father. It is my rebellion against a holy God, that has lead to our bodies breaking down and you not having children. Please, brother, forgive me.

Oh yeah, in spite of our rebellion, one day God will take this mess and make all right!

    2. My dear brother Osiris, my heart is broken and filled with pain as I read through you journey in this life. I grew up in a very poor nation in the face of the earth, literally surviving by the grace of the creator God. I prayed, cried, & fought with God in my distress of growing without a father, and mom. May life that I live now is only by the grace in the mysterious God that keeps on fathering me one day after another. I feel like giving you a huge huge because we all together in this and I can definitely relate to your pain and struggles.

Coming to the USA. Was an answered prayer that God wanted me and my siblings to start a new life.

I learned that life, sin & death are are mysteries that God will reveal to us in our heavenly home. I just want to let you know that God loves you beyond your highest doubt in life. I will leave you with the following Scripture

      Rom.5.14-19.nkjv
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.) Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

  18. I have a very loving father who spent a lot of time with me and instilled within me many wonderful qualities. However, he also was unfaithful to my mom, and that was a major component which lead to my parents divorcing one another while I was in junior high. That deeply hurt me. You know my heart and its capacity to both be hurt and to overcome. I pray that you strengthen it in its weakest areas to stand in freedom over much. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

    2) I made sure to do so.

    3) Yes! I commit to that goal with you

Because I have been forgiven first is the primary reason I can forgive. I consciensely choose to forgive those that have wronged me whether intentionally or unintentionally because as Jesus spoke “they do not know what they do.”

  31. 1. Lord, I ask your forgiveness of the terrible testimony I have given you in light of the wronged relationships I've had with others. I have done my part to steer people away- to misrepresent- to be an agent of the enemy and regardless of the way that those happened. I've dishonored you. Please continue to work on me and lead others with a living example- I need to ask for so much forgiveness- that I don't even care if I have been spit upon- and if I have a shred of pride I will let it fall now. You owe me nothing, because I've been worse to you ____. If you can please build up this wretch, do so that I can be stronger and more sensitive to your touch and direction.

  35. 1. Jesus, forgive me for withholding forgiveness from B. I know I've allowed resentment against him to settle in my heart and that's not Your way. You can me for while I was still Your enemy and died for me before I ever knew I needed You to. Put that kind of love and forgiveness in me; the kind that looks like Your forgiveness. Thank you so much for all You've done for me. I'm completely underseving, but completely grateful to You. Thank You for giving me an opportunity to forgive like You do.

  36. 1. Today there are many beautiful prayers of forgiveness . I read this blog a bit late. I would have like to have read them to my brother who is in the hospital. Robert Roman hit the spot with, "I've learned that forgiveness is first and foremost a decision/choice I make, then I can begin healing." Holding multitude of grunges, unforgiveness, and anger is unhealthy. I will make it a point to read these prayers to my brother.
My prayer is for my brother.
Heavenly Father, thank you for your many blessing. Thank you for being with us . Thank you for your guidance. I ask you Father for my brother . Only you know the reason for his illness. Only you can heal him. If its lack of forgiveness, soften his heart.
Give him the ability to forgive and open the doors to recovery. Let your Holy Spirit thrive in him so that he knows it is you who deserves all the glory. It is you and you alone who brings healing.
Thank you for teaching me about forgiveness. I remain your servant who needs more and more of your wisdom. Thank you for my bothers of M3. Thank you most of all for Jesus, my Lord And Savior ,in whose name I pray. Amen
    2. I will contact them
