- What's the following illusion have to do with our passage, John 5:16-30? Absolutely nothing at all :) But I thought you would enjoy it and you can pass it on to your friends and family.
Though it looks like the coils are moving, they are not. Just stare at any one and you will see.
Let's see our passage now. As we read through John 5:16-30, I would recommend using different colored pens or pencils to underline different key words. It helps you to see things emphasized. I have a four color pen which helps. Speaking of colors, look at each colored word below and speak out the colors, not the word. They are very familiar, so speak out their colors quickly. Easy right? :)
What's this got to do with our passage? Absolutely nothing at all! :)
As you now read John 5:16-30...
As you now read John 5:16-30...
Note the many times the words Father and Son are mentioned.
Underline the times Jesus said he was sent by the Father. This is a huge theme throughout the book.
Note Jesus' testimony regarding his Father Son relationship.
-The Son is working even on the Sabbath as his Father is v.17.
-The Son is dependent on his Father v.19a (Perhaps prophets would also see and hear from God similarly. But Jesus is far more than a sent prophet!)
-The Son imitates his Father v.19b.
-The Son is loved by the Father v.20a.
-The Son is shown all that the Father does v.20b.
Illustration: The Son raises the dead just as His Father does v.21. (We are being prepared for the raising of Lazarus in John 11.)
-The Son is entrusted by the Father with the right of judgment (of giving eternal life or condemnation, unlike any earthling) v.22.
Application: Thus, the Son should be honored just as the Father is honored v.23. What a claim to deity!
By the time Jesus finishes speaking, it is clear that he is claiming to be equal with God. The Jews got that right in v.18. His Father Son relationship is far greater than ours. He is God the Son!
As I was studying through this passage, it seemed like Jesus started to repeat himself in v.28-30. Hmm. Why? (Remember to ask questions.) I wondered if the passage might be laid out as a chiasm. I didn't see such mentioned in my commentaries, so I did a quick internet search of chiasms in John 5 and sure enough, that explains it. (Use the power of the internet!) For those who are new or by way of review, a chiasm is a style of writing used at times in the Bible where each point has it's mate later on. The outline of the passage below reveals such. The author of the outline includes certain Greek words to help us see they are also used later in the chiasm. If it all seems Greek to you at first, please spend a bit of time comparing one point with it's mate found later on. You'll start to see things you didn't see before- kind of like the picture below. What's the picture got to do with our passage? Absolutely everything!
Old woman, young woman
Do you see a young woman or and old woman? If you see a young woman, and wish to see the old woman, imagine the ear as an eye, the necklace as a mouth and the chin as a nose. The Jews were so focused on seeing Jesus as an impostor, they couldn't see him any other way. So the picture can remind us of how people view Jesus and also how we can view the passage below.
http://howthebiblefitstogether.org/the-chiasm-of-john-5-19-30.html
1.- Share one thing that impressed you. (You may not have even "seen" it at first, kind of like the picture of the women.) Then write it on your MP3 and look for opportunities to share it with others.
2.- Did you contact your fire team brothers as requested yesterday, and find out about a time they were an invalid- laid up in the hospital or very sick?
If not, please do so today. We need to strengthen the bonds of friendship and it starts with sharing. "Be devoted to one another in brotherly love." The invalid had no one to help him, but you do.
Note: We have turned a corner in the gospel of John. Before, in the first four chapters, we saw the presentation of the Son of God to people. Now in chapters 5-12, we will start to see the opposition to the Son of God. The Jewish leaders already want to kill him in 5:18. Wow! What powerful opposition so early in the book. Here's a helpful outline of what we have already covered regarding the presentation of the Son of God, adapted from the Ryrie Study Bible-
The Presentation of the Son of God in ch.1-4
By John the Baptist 1:19-34 (Behold the lamb of God...)
To his first followers 1:35-51 (We have found Him!)
At a wedding in Cana of Galilee where he turned water into wine 2:1-12
By cleansing the temple in Jerusalem 2:13-25
To Nicodemus 3:1-21
By John the Baptist again 3:22-36
To the woman at the well and the other Samaritans 4:1-42
To a royal official, healing his son in Capernaum of Galilee 4:43-45
You will recall that most of these above events were positive responses to Jesus. People believed in Him. But you will see from here on forward, opposition to Christ, especially when he is in Jerusalem, which is where most of the remainder of the book will take place. Even when he returns to the Sea of Galilee (in ch.6), 80 miles to the North of Jerusalem, we will see that many become disillusioned with him. Wanna know why? Stick around :)
George Doherty had a cool outreach opportunity- "Sunday I was on the Blue Line going home after service with the CD of Sunday’s message in my hand. I was looking out the window not really paying attention to the people sitting around me when a young man across the aisle asked what CD I had. When I showed it to him and told him it was from church, he told me he was spiritual and believed in God but wasn’t religious. Then the person in front of me, Jerry, turned around and said he believed in Jesus but knew he needed to make changes in his life. The 3 of us talked for a couple minutes before their stop. When they got up to get off the train, I pulled out a Greatest Minimovies card for Jerry and told him to check out the videos. Then the other man asked for one too. I hope they took the time to watch some of the videos." That's fantastic George! Thank You Lord!
Last Friday, Ismael's daughter was born and this Friday we celebrate Ismael being born 31 years ago. Happy birthday Ismael!
Thanks men for remembering to get all your points on the board as we go into this weekend. You are helping me, yourself and your teams.
John 5:30 " By myself I can do nothing, I judge only as I hear and my judgement is just, for I seek not to please me, by he who sent me."
ReplyDeleteJesus was the express image of God, but he was also completely submitting and surrendering to God. He said that he can do nothing by himself, needs to be taught before doing anything.
I need God, to seek him, and his wisdom and his will in all I do.
2. Yes, we had great interaction and bonding for hours last night-- our team grows stronger together in Christ daily.
Excellent Jack! And thanks for all the time you are investing in the men in your squad. You're a good shepherd.
DeleteYes Jack we all need to seek his wisdom and will in all that we do.
DeleteAmen, Jack. My I follow in the example of Jesus and seek, always, the instruction of the Father. May my heart be trained to God's voice and do His will. May I submit every fiber of my being, in absolute humility, to His power and majesty.
Delete1. John 5: 22 The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
ReplyDeleteJohn 5:28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and resurrected on the third day. He is our savior! God has givin him ALL authority to judge us. Here is where it gets scary. I ask for forgiveness for any wrong doing that i have done to anybody in my life. I understand I'm a sinner and sin nature is naturally in me. Every day i take a step back and try not to sin. Many times i catch myself but at times i forget. Judgment is upon all of us, one sin is not greater then another.
2. I reached out.
Very good Horacio. You have so much going on in your life right now. I'm praying for you.
DeleteI'm praying for you also and you can do it. Focus on the joy of Jesus in all circumstance and lean on Jesus. We can't do it alone bro
DeleteAmen Horacio He is our Savior
DeleteBrother Horacio here is a scripture that comes to mind, when you have time read the whole of Roman 7, here is Paul's struggle with SIN as we all do.
DeleteRoman 7:15 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
1. The 'Chiasm' is an interesting and helpful way to see what Jesus is saying in this section. The unity between the Father and the Son is complete. "For whatever the Father does, these things also the Son does in like manner." (v. 19) The center point (v. 26) is that "For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself." The Father and the Son are unified and they possess life in themselves, apart from anything or anyone else. God is life so nothing could take away His life because He didn't receive it from someone else, He doesn't depend on anyone, and He existed before anyone or anything else. People often seek life, meaning, excitement, fulfillment, love, pleasure, adventure, significance, and security apart from God. There is a deception that convinces people that God (and Christians) are always angry, negative, and 'lifeless'. Some churches and Christian groups do present their way of life as a 'Pharisee' type of existence. But the truth is that God gives true life, deep life, and a life that never ends.
ReplyDelete2. I don't have a fire team yet but will reach out to some guys.
PS--congrats to Ismael on the birth of their baby! Very glad for this great couple to be blessed with this child. May the Lord give you all you need as parents.
Excellent thoughts Mike! I especially like your words- "People often seek life, meaning, excitement, fulfillment, love, pleasure, adventure, significance, and security apart from God." We all need to guard against this fallen tendency.
DeleteMike. Thx for your insight. It is right on
DeleteI have lived that Pharisee type of existence for far too long...empty, hopeless, longing for the God-shaped void in my heart to be filled, but I only think I know God. My proud and foolish mind have long kept me from surrendering my heart and vacating the throne that I should have prepared for Jesus. I can do nothing of worth or merit apart from God, for where God is absent, love is absent, and where love is absent, so too is life. Lord, I pray that you break me and rebuild me. Mold me into the man you created me to be. Let love for you fill my heart and let my mind submit to your will.
DeleteThank you Pastor Mike, for sharing your wisdom.
Delete1. John 5:24 " Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life."
ReplyDeleteThis verse really stood out to me because it clearly states what a person must do in order to be saved from eternal condemnation.
A person has to believe that Jesus came to die for their sins and was resurrected on the third and because of his great sacrifice we someday will spend eternity with God.
2. Yes, our group had a great time sharing how the power of God had manifested itself in our lives.
Very good Roger. Thanks for caring for the men in your group.
DeleteThank you , Roger, for make clear of this verse.
Delete1)that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. John 5:23
ReplyDeleteThis confirms what Jesus the son should always be honored because when we honor him we honor God who sent him.
2) did it
That's right Andre!
DeleteAmen lets always try to honor Jesus.
DeleteLove, honor and glory in all we do to our Lord Jesus!
DeleteGood post, Andre!
Delete1. John 5:19-20 (NIV)
ReplyDelete19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.
This passage reminded of being a good steward of the word. Especially to my family. I have seen instances of my son sharing his faith and encouraging others. Those are my proud moments. I love to share scripture almost every day with him. I pray that you do too. God bless.
2. yes we did.
Sam, that is a beautiful thing to see in your son Sammy!
DeleteSam great job being a godly example to your family.
Delete1.- Jn. 5:21
ReplyDeleteFor just as the father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.
Jesus authority over mankind, given by the Father to the Son, the power given to him to give resurrection, for the Father n Son are one and in unison with one another. Jesus claim to his deity, the source of life for now here in the present and in the future when he will judge and determine if you are resurrected into the eternal life.
Later Jesus power of resurrection will be demonstrated and witness by many when Lazarus's life is restored from his death. Jn. 11:1-45
There is no death in Jesus, he is life, His presence is here now living through us all in this world who choose to accept and believe in Him.
Thank you JESUS for you do Live!
2.- Done yesterday.
Very good sharing Armando! Love your ending prayer of thanks and praise.
Delete1.Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,
ReplyDeleteJohn 5:22 didn't see this before but the Triune God has different functions. God the Son will be the one to judge.
Yes indeed George!

ReplyDelete1 Even the dead in their tombs will one day awaken to Jesus' voice; however, many will awaken to doom.
reminds me of the hymn:
"Jesus is coming soon,
morning or night or noon,
many will meet their doom,
trumpets will sound".
2 Yes I did.
Brother Ed, do you happen to know the singer or title of that song? I'd like to listen to it. Thanks, God bless :-)
DeleteI like that verse brother Edward, "Even the dead in their tombs will one day awaken to Jesus' voice; however, many will awaken to doom"
DeleteWe all have hope that there is resurrection of the dead. Eternal life for those who claim Jesus Christ as their lord and savior and eternal damnation for those who refused to accept his gift of salvation. We SHELL see our loved ones who slept in the dust on that day of resurrection...PTL.
Troublesome times are here,
Deletefilling men's hearts with fear.
Freedom we all hold dear, now is at stake..
Humble your hearts to God,
safe from the chastening rod.

Yeah Dave, I like the lyrics a lot. My son, Alistair, has even made it one of his new favorite songs. He almost knows the whole song by memory.
Delete1. Really enjoyed the chiasm. "chiasm is a style of writing used at times in the Bible where each point has it's mate later on."
ReplyDelete2. Yes
Glad you liked it mi amigo :)
Delete5.25. I believe he is talking about the walking dead who are dead to sin. Dave shared how he had to rely on his friends to watch him that he wouldn't choke after surgery
ReplyDeleteGood name for such people Flo- the walking dead :)
DeleteLol, good post Flo :)

ReplyDelete1. Wow. George what a great testimony, so awesome.
ReplyDeleteI like this portion of John because it does highlight the relationship between the Father and Son and I believe even the Holy Spirit. The Son only does what He sees His Father doing, only says what his Father tells Him, etc. The job of the Holy Spirit is to direct us to Jesus. I think we see a working relationship here.
2. I did reach out to my group.
Excellent Eddie! Thanks for being a good shepherd.
Delete25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.
ReplyDelete28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
This is our HOPE my brothers in Christ, there is resurrection day, and all who died before hand awaits that day of resurrection. Glory and honor belongs to our God for ever and ever Amen.
Love your praising heart Lemmy!
Delete1) ““Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.”

Good verse Ricardo.
DeleteHow are your wingmen doing?
John 5:22-23 "For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgement to the Son, so that all will honor the Son, even as they honor the Father."
ReplyDeleteHow's that for authority? Not even God judges anyone...all judgement (that jurisdiction; that authority) has been given to Jesus Christ, the way, the truth, and the life, Amen! Only through Jesus can we ever hope to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. He holds the keys in His mighty hand, and it is by his sacrifice that we have ANY hope of eternal life. Jesus be glorified and Satan be horrified!
Amen! Well said Osiris!!!
DeleteVery good Osiris. And I really appreciated what you had to say in reply to Pastor Mike.
Delete1- John 5:20New Living Translation (NLT)
ReplyDelete20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished.

ReplyDeleteThis is important because it says that we must believe in God and Jesus as the Son of God. Only way to get to heaven.
2. I contacted 2 team members. I told them I had the flu real bad in high school and was vomiting alot. Nothing too bad in my life. Many sprains cuts and bruises but nothing broken.
Your right Chuy. But it's not just a belief in their existence. It's also a trust and reliance in their accomplishment of our salvation which was by far not an easy matter.

That was John's purpose in writing this Gospel Dave. Thank you Lord for the eyes to read, the ears to hear and minds enlightened by Your Holy Spirit to understand these wonderful, powerful truths.
DeleteGreat, succinct memory verse on the gospel.
DeleteJohn 5:30 – By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
ReplyDeleteI was impressed with the contrast between man's and God's judgment.
In verse 16 the Jews were miss judging Jesus by their misguided religious understandings and standards for the works he was doing on the Sabbath and so they persecuted him. In verse 17 Jesus replied that he was doing work just as his Heavenly Father always works. Upon hearing this the Jews respond with greater (miss) judgment, and were trying all the more harder to kill Jesus because he was equating himself with God. In verses 19 thru 23 Jesus qualifies his relationship with His Heavenly Father. Because his Heavenly Father entrusts all judgment to Jesus as His Son, all men should honor Jesus just as they honor God his Father. Lastly in verses 24 -30 Jesus describes clearly his part and authority during the ultimate final judgment of mankind at the end of time. His judgment will be just. It would be the unrighteous judgments and hate of the religious Jewish leaders that God would use in the future as an instrument to pour out his holy wrath upon his Son so that we will not be condemned but can pass over from death to life.
Great insights into this verse Dave, I love it :)
DeleteJohn 5:18 "For this cause therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His OWN Father, making Himself equal with God." The Greek word "own" (idion) has the idea of uniqueness. Jesus was called God His OWN UNIQUE Father. The Jews clearly understood this claim to deity, unlike many "modern" people who ignore this claim and try to think that Jesus was merely a "good teacher".
ReplyDeleteGreat verse selection Tim, I picked the same verse :) I agree with your comments "The Jews clearly understood this claim to deity, unlike many "modern" people who ignore this claim and try to think that Jesus was merely a "good teacher"
DeleteJohn 5:2
ReplyDeleteI guess the point that Dave made about people seeing Jesus as the lover and the Father as the judge is not completely accurate. But this passage is very clear that Jesus will judge. It's sad to see how people treat Jesus and his name with such irreverence. He will call all people to account and every knee will bow.
2. Yes did it.
1. John 5:17-18 says " In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God." ---Of course, the Pharisees did not see Jesus for Who He really was, "the Lord of the Sabbath" Jesus claims equality with His Father, God because He too is God :) He is the Lord of the Sabbath who gives the ultimate Sabbath rest through faith in him, not works.
ReplyDelete2. yes
I like the way you put it Israel - He is the Lord of the Sabbath who gives the ultimate Sabbath rest through faith in him, not works.
Delete1 John 5:24 24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.
ReplyDeleteJesus was flat out telling people what they needed to do to be saved, it wasn't like it was that difficult of a concept. It just amazes me how many times he had to repeat that over and over again before people started to trust him.
2 Did it
Michael, your comment still applies today. There are people today who know what they need to do but still ignore it.
DeleteJesus' words are very clear and their truth are greatly substantiated by the works and testimonies in this Gospel of John and other records in the Word of God.
Delete1 – John 5: 16 So the Jewish leaders began harassing Jesus for breaking the Sabbath rules. This stuck out to me because of Dave’s information from yesterday about fence laws. We Jesus breaking a low of Moses or one of the fence laws that the Pharisees created?
ReplyDelete2 – Did it.
1. “This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.” John 5:18 ESV
ReplyDeleteI think it's crazy that the Pharisees wanted to kill Jesus even tho he was showing miracles and proving that he was the son of God. It's crazy how much sin can blind you from the truth.
2. Did it.
1. John 5:28, 29. Don't be surprised! Indeed the time is coming when all the dead in their graves shall hear the voice of God' Son, and shall raise again - those who have done good , to eternal life and those who have continued in evil, to judgment.
ReplyDeleteWhat a scary thought for a person who continues in sin, does not ask forgiveness or accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. Then again it would be scary for myself and other believers who read these passages and accept r hen as truth. A person who is downright evil, stubborn, atheist Will be awakened by the voice of Jesus to be judged. My prayer is to continue in the right steps that lead to eternal life.
2. We did make contact.
1. John 5: 22. Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.

ReplyDelete1. (5: 24 The Message) “It’s urgent that you listen carefully to this: Anyone here who believes what I am saying right now and aligns himself with the Father, who has in fact put me in charge, has at this very moment the real, lasting life and is no longer condemned to be an outsider. This person has taken a giant step from the world of the dead to the world of the living.
ReplyDeleteLook, thought about this a lot yesterday. That 'the message,' upon hearing will bring the dead to life. Share the Living Christ with all! Guys, don't hesitate, don't falter, and don't delay- you are the man for the job and he asked you to be it. Shared it with a co-worker who was leaving the job for another agency. I shared my faith with both of them at lunch. I wasn't sure their relationship with our Almighty, but they know I have given them the chance to share it and learn.
