Th.10.1.15...The Holy Spirit and Prayer...John 16:5-33

How do you think? Notice I didn't ask, What do you think about? Nor did I ask, "How fast do you you think?" I'm asking, "How do you think?" Like most Westerners, we tend to process and present information linearly, like an assembly line. A+B=C. For example, Paul argues linearly, like a lawyer in the book of Romans- All have sinned. All deserve punishment. Christ took the punishment for all. All who repent and believe in Christ will be saved. He makes his point and then moves on to the next point. But Jesus and John present their thoughts in a non-linear or mosaic way. Jesus makes a point and then circles back to remind us and add more thoughts to it. A lot of the storytelling world, past and present, think this way. This nonlinear approach explains why Jesus comes back to the Holy Spirit in chapter 14, 15 and 16. He doesn't just give us everything he wants to say on the Holy Spirit in one passage, much as many of us might like such. (Your book on systematic theology by Burkhof does that, but not Jesus.) You have to pull all the threads of Jesus' teaching together. When you do, what does Jesus reveal about the Holy Spirit? Here's what he's already said in chapters 14 and 15-

I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. John 14:16-17

“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. John 14:25-26

“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.John 15:26-27

Now in today's reading, John 16:5-33, you will see that Jesus once again circles back to say more about the Holy Spirit. (By the way, 1 John contains a lot of this nonlinear thinking, as John circles back repeatedly to underscore certain points. No, John was not getting senile and repeating himself:) So read now John 16:5-33.

Here's a few things I noted in my Bible. Jesus speaks a lot about his going and the Holy Spirit's coming. I underlined those words. I also noticed a big emphasis on time. I underlined such words as- time, now, until now, then, when, in a little while, a time is coming, in that day. Time is of the essence in the passage.  Something big is about to happen, like the birth of a child. The disciples' grief would be turned to joy at Jesus' resurrection. (Likewise, Jesus' time was at hand. His agonizing pain would culminate in the birth of the church.)

Prayer is another subject that Jesus has mentioned before and comes back to today. Notice what some might call the "over the top" promises Jesus makes regarding prayer in chapters 14-16-

I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. John 14:13-14

If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
 15:7.

Now Jesus comes back to prayer again in our passage today.
Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. 16:23-24

"Whatever..." What bold promises of Jesus! I would have said, "Ask me anything, and I will seriously consider it." Yet three times Jesus used the word, "whatever."
I will be the first to admit, I have not had that kind of experience in prayer, where whatever I asked for in Jesus' name, I received it. Even the apostle Paul did not get his earnest prayers answered in 2 Cor.12:8-9.  So Jesus certainly knows how to stir up your thinking! As you dig into the scriptures, you'll find important preconditions to answered prayers:
Ask according to God's will. 1 John 5:14
Believe what God has promised, not simply what you wish for. Mt.21:22
Confess known sins, especially those against loved ones. 1 Pet.3:7
Dwell in his word, especially to love one another. John 15:7,12
Entreat with right motives, not to simply spend what you get on selfish pleasures. James 4:1-3
Forgive others. Mt.6:12-15
Grace to accept a "No" or no answer. God's grace is sufficient. 2 Cor.12:8-9

1.- Read John 16:5-33. What's one thing that grabbed your attention from the passage? Feel free to use your commentaries if you wish. Share some of your thoughts and enrich us. As always, write your MP3 down and be on the look out to share Scripture with others.

2.- Watch the following sermon jam by Matt Chandler on prayer. Then talk to one of your wingmen and find out how he is doing on his SMARTER goal and pray for him. Ask!

What motivates me to keep praying? One thing is that I can't stand to think that I might miss getting what God wanted me to have simply because I didn't keep asking. "You do not have, because you do not ask God" James 4:2. Be like a persistent child. Keep asking!

I love it when Jesus asks questions. I can't help but be amused. He already knows the answer. He must have had some great fun here on earth. I mean we all know that he came to fulfill a purpose, but I think he had some fun with His people while he was here.

    2. Labor in prayer. Yup, that's what it almost always has been for me. Particularly with my wife. Though with my new schedule and her schedule for this week, we literally have had zero time together.

Please pray that I will be able to get to bed about an hour earlier on the week days.

  2. 1. John 16:33 " I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world".
Such an uplifting verse that should encourage us all knowing that in the midst of our problems Jesus is there to give us peace and ultimately in the end the victory belongs to Him.
Thank you Lord that we belong to you and that because of Jesus we can also experience victory over our tribulations.
This is what Adam Clark has to say in his commentary about what Jesus means when He says He has overcome the world: " I am just now going by my death to put it and its god to the rout.
My apparent weakness shall be my victory; my ignominy shall be my glory; and the victory which the world, the devil, and my adversaries in general, shall appear to gain over me, shall be their own lasting defeat, and my eternal triumph. - Fear not!"

  3. 1-John 16:22 “So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.”
The Bible does not hide the ugly realities of life. We live in a broken world and there will be tough times, sadness, and failure. The Lord says he we will wipe every tear away which implies that there will be reasons to weep. However, the Lord gives us hope. This is not just wishful thinking. It is a promise and guarantee that things will get better. The death of Jesus was extremely difficult. It was necessary. But it is not the end of the story. The Catholic Church highlights the 14 stations of the cross but does not seem to have a similar emphasis on the resurrection. As Jesus talks to the disciples here just a few hours before he is arrested he tells them that this time will be difficult but it is temporary. The death will be followed by a resurrection. The life after death will bring a joy so deep and lasting that no one and nothing can take it away.
2-Great words on prayer! Let’s do it.

  4. 1- John 16:11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

I didn't really get much out of the commentary or maybe I wasn't fully paying attention as I read them. But this verse caught my attention. I see here Jesus is telling his disciples of what is about to come regarding sin and spiritual death. A new way of doing things will soon come where every person will have the opportunity to live in the freedom of Christs' sacrifice. We no longer are bound by sin and death because Christ put an end to that when he gave his life for us.

In a time like this for me and my family, (regardless if he was speaking to the apostles directly, I believe we go through troubles as well,) this verse is really encouraging. It's a battle cry! It's a reminder of the victory we have in Christ. He has overcome death and sin by the power of His resurrection! As our lives get chaotic and confused in the midst of the daily trials life brings Jesus offers peace through faith in Him. And the awesome thing is the peace that He gives outweighs the turmoil we nay be experiencing in this world.

    a. These things I have spoken to you: In a moment Jesus would pray for His disciples. Before He did, He summarized the purpose of the long talk He had with those disciples: to bring them peace and the settled assurance of overcomers.
    b. Jesus did not promise peace; He offered it. He said, you may have peace. People may follow Jesus yet deny themselves this peace. We gain the peace Jesus offered by finding it in Him. Jesus said, that in Me you may have peace. We won’t find real peace anywhere else other than in Jesus.
    c. In the world you will have tribulation: Jesus also made the promise of tribulation. Peace is offered to us, but tribulation is promised. When we become Christians we may bring fewer problems upon ourselves, but we definitely still have them. (Guzik)

  12. The ABC's of prayer! Great reference and reminder of how our prayer life should be conducted.

    1) the verse I chose, and that happens to be one of my favorites is:

John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

It is such an encouragement to me. I don't face a huge of amount of persecution in my life at the present time, so sometimes the verse in John 15:8 about being hated, doesn't always hit my heart the same.

This verse in John 16 though speaks loudly to me. Because even if we don't have the outward signs of Persecution, we will always have troubles, in life, even in our own worlds hearts. That's why I praise God in that, when my faith feels hopeless, He tells me that He has overcome that hopelessness.

    ‭‭John‬ ‭16:33‬ ‭

The war is already won by our Savior, but now it's up to us through the Holy Spirit to help God win as many souls as possible before Jesus returns. He is victorious and we must help advance his Kingdom.
Guzik stated: be of good cheer, I have overcome the world: Jesus proclaimed the truth of His victory. This was an amazing statement from a man about to be arrested, forsaken, rejected, mocked, tortured and executed. Judas, the religious authorities, Pilate, the crowd, the soldiers or even death and the grave could not overcome Him. Instead, Jesus could truly say, I have overcome the world. If it was true then, its even truer now.

When Jesus wanted to comfort and strengthen His disciples, He spoke of His victory, not directly their victory. This wasnt cheer up or try harder. Jesus knew that His victory would be theirs.

I have many things to say to you, "more than you can now bear."

This may mean, "more than you can understand now" or "more than you can perform without the Spirit's help"

To live out Christ's teaching requires the enabling presence of the Spirit. Jesus knows his time is short and is telling the disciples that the spiritual body of the Holy Spirit will arrive soon to be with them.

    V 12 Guzik's comments;
I still have many things to say to you: Jesus frankly admitted that His own teaching was incomplete, and anticipated the further instruction of the church by the Holy Spirit. This statement of Jesus leads us to anticipate the formation of the New Testament.

    i. Here Jesus answered those who say, Ill take what Jesus taught, but not what Paul or the others taught. Paul and the other New Testament writers taught us the many things that Jesus spoke of.

For example, they didnt know that some of the customs and commands among the Jews would be fulfilled by the person and work of Jesus, and no longer be binding under the New Covenant

For example, they didnt know that God would bring Gentiles into the New Covenant community as equal partners, without having to first become Jews

  23. 1- John 16:33New International Version (NIV)

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

A Great verse that has encouraged me so much. I found some Gold:

    i. When Jesus wanted to comfort and strengthen His disciples, He spoke of His victory, not directly their victory. This wasnt cheer up or try harder. Jesus knew that His victory would be theirs.

ii. He overcame the world in three areas: in His life, in His death, and in His resurrection. (Boice)

iii. This statement, spoken as it is in the shadow of the cross, is audacious He goes to the cross not in fear or in gloom, but as a conqueror. (Morris)

iv. He overcame the world when nobody else had overcome it. (Spurgeon)

    v. The thought that Jesus has overcome became precious to John. Nikeo occurs only here in the Gospel, but twenty-two times in the Johannine Epistles and Apocalypse. (Dods)

vi. The world conquers me when it comes between me and God, when it fills my desires, when it absorbs my energies, when it blinds my eyes to the things unseen and eternal. (Maclaren)

vii. Knowing that Jesus has overcome the world brings us good cheer. It is the foundation for our peace in Him. We see that Jesus is in control, we see that although He leaves He does not abandon, we see that He loves, and we see that the victory is His. We can be of good cheer indeed.

  25. John 16: 25 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

Jesus gave us an unlimited, powerful resource with this promise. If only we consistently met the conditions that would release this awesome force into our world that is stored and waiting in heaven. We are thrilled when we receive from Jesus just what we need in our moments of desperation. But when the pressure is off, we find it tough to be patient to wait for Jesus' to answer. It seems seldom that when we ask only once, that we will see God's answer to our prayer. I liked how the video explains that we need to be persistent, continual, not letting up, not giving up until we receive what we know that God also desires. Thankfully we cannot abuse this mighty resource that Jesus so generously invites us to use. In His wisdom and love He just says no to us when we ask selfishly or seek something outside of His will.

Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible
Your joy no man taketh from you - You shall be so firmly persuaded that I have risen and that I am the Messiah, that neither the threats nor persecutions of men shall ever be able to shake your faith and produce doubt or unbelief, and thus take away your joy. This prediction was remarkably fulfilled. It is evident that after his ascension not one of the apostles ever doubted for a moment that he had risen from the dead. No persecution or trial was able to shake their faith; and thus, amid all their afflictions, they had an unshaken source of joy.

  28. 1. 24“Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.

I never noticed that phrase, "so that your joy may be full."

    Guzik commentary

    i. Your joy no one will take from you: Our Lord's meaning appears to have been this: that his resurrection should be so completely demonstrated to them, that they should never have a doubt concerning it; and consequently that their joy should be great and permanent. (Clarke)

Asking God should be joyful and take delight that God hears my prayers and desires to answer them according to His will. That is good to know and motivates me to pray,

  29. 1-Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. John 16:7 NKJV

"If we surrender our lives to His service, we can never be placed in a position for which God has not made provision. Whatever may be our situation, we have a Guide to direct our way; whatever our perplexities, we have a sure Counselor; whatever our sorrow, bereavement, or loneliness, we have a sympathizing Friend" (Christ's Object Lesson)

2 - I blogged everyday and pray for my fire team and M3 in general. Dear heavenly father I thank you because you are so kind & listens to our prayers. Please bless Kevin, Andie, & George not forgetting all my other M3 brothers. Thank you for sending us the Helper to enable us to understand scriptures, we ask all these in Jesus name.

  30. 1. I thought it was interesting how Jesus told his disciples the reason why he told them everything; from John 16:5-32.
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

I liked what David Guzik's Commentary on the Bible wrote about this passage,
"Jesus did not promise peace; He offered it. He said, you may have peace. People may follow Jesus yet deny themselves this peace. We gain the peace Jesus offered by finding it in Him. Jesus said, that in Me you may have peace. We wont find real peace anywhere else other than in Jesus.”

    Incredible.

2.- What a great reminder and different approach regarding prayer! I never thought of approaching prayer in such a bold manner, as was mentioned by Matt Chandler

    1. Amen, brother. We should all pray as boldly as we WAR, trusting that the same faithfulness by which we choose to be disciples of the Son of God is the faithfulness we can expect from our loving Father. He is as unwavering as He has given us the grace to be.

  31. 1. John 16:26 "In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God."

This Christ had promised before, John 14:16; nor was there any occasion to repeat it now, of which they might be strongly assured: besides, at that day the Spirit would be given to them by virtue of his intercession; so that there would be no need of praying to the Father for them on that account. This is said, not as if the intercession of Christ for his people would then cease; for he is always their advocate with the Father, and ever lives to make intercession for them; though it may not be carried on in the same manner, by prayer, as when he was here on earth, his personal appearance, and the presentation of his blood, sacrifice, and righteousness, being sufficient; but to declare the disposition and readiness of his Father to hear them, and grant unto them whatsoever they should ask of him in his name.

Among Catholics, prayer to saints for intercession between man and God is common practice. Some even pray to Christ's mother, the virgin Mary, to petition on their behalf before her Son. Here, though, Jesus makes clear that we have to but pray in His name to the Father. To ask what we desire of the Father and trust in faith that by His love for us, God will grant us what we pray for (us meaning the faithful disciples of Christ who believed in and loved Him). Recently, my wife and I had an opportunity to meet with Pastor Mark. From our conversation that night, I learned of a way to pray to the Father that I had not known before: "Father, we pray for a child, but if it isn't your will that we should have a child, we pray that you will change our heart so that we will no longer desire a child." God's grace is enough. Though we do not know His purpose for us or what plans He has made for us, we know that He would never give us more than we can handle. If God wants me to have something I desire and have asked for, He will grant me what I desire, but if in God's great wisdom the things I desire and pray for are not for me, I can trust that He will change my heart so that I would desire it no more. The important thing isn't whether I get what I pray for or not, but that I trust fully in God and accept His will above my own.

  32. 1. John 16:8 and when he has come he will convince the world of its sin, and the availability of God's goodness, and the deliverance from judgement.
When the Holy Spirit comes he will show three things:
    Sin, righteousness, and judgement.
The Holy Spirit will be a light that will shine on people's lives. The Holy Spirit will give us the understanding of God's word.

  34. 1) John 16:33 ""I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.""

Very comforting verse I must say. It definitely reminds me of this verse as well. Romans 8:31 "What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?"

“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”

This stirs me up to re-read this verse and is a loaded lesson. Jesus is telling the deciple that they will be more equipped going forward. While the disciples yearned for Jesus to stay and instruct them coming was the person of the God Head would could be even more personable and more present and instructing. Personally Im reminded of the times I ask form more of god even as He as already equipped me or even will do so in the future. And the reminder goes to the word where numerous time individuals such as Joshua are told to be strong and courageous.

  36. 1. John 16:31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?

Many followers came for the show but did not believe. No matter what miracle was performed they still doubted. Here he is talking to his wingman, his disciples about his departure. What belief and understanding they had about Jesus. Great men that helped spread the word to other nations because they believed.

  37. 1.John 16:12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear."

All of history in a blink. Jesus already knew and he knows we cannot bear it without him. For those who are following history, know we have seen dark times in our human experience. We have much to learn of God's glory and our service to him.

    2. In prayer I need to lift up those around and give them hope and guidance. I need to be welcoming and strong in the word- to use wisdom and ask it liberally from Him.
I am working on the art goal and am free finally to call the brothers tomorrow hopefully.

  39. 1.So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
    John 16:22 NIV
Now that sounds like a promise that Jesus is saying to us, for there will be a time that he will come (his second coming) and we will rejoice in all his glory!
In that passage Jesus was explaining to his disciples how they are going to feel meaning his death, but then rejoicing in his resurrection. Now that's a Promise I can take hold to, no one can take that joy away.
