Tues.6.16.15...A Good Name...Prov.22:1-16

"A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold" Prov.22:1.

Do you know the meaning of your name? I used to ask that at times to Clemente high school students when I would visit them during their lunch hour. It was a good ice breaker question. Often times they didn't, so I would pull out a list of names with their meanings. Unfortunately, it wasn't a long enough list to cover all the names I would encounter. But check out this all inclusive site; type in your name and voila! http://www.behindthename.com (If it doesn't give you the meaning, click the derivative of your name under the Meaning and History portion.)

"A good name is more desirable than great riches" Prov.22:1. Of course that's not talking about the name you were given at birth. It's talking about your reputation among the saints, as the second line of the proverb reveals- "To be esteemed is better than silver or gold." The people of darkness may trash your name as they did even of Jesus, calling him a drunkard and demonized. But what do the people of the light say about you? Most importantly of all, what does God say about you?

There are worldly celebrities whose names are household words. We might say their names are famous, but they don't have good names. Their names might even be in the Hollywood Blvd Walk of Fame, but many of their lives were a walk of shame. They lived corruptly. Though esteemed by the world, they were an offense to God and godly ways. Their lust-filled lifestyle only set an example that would lead others astray. God says that "the name of the wicked will rot" Prov.10:7.

What do you think of your name? I hope you like it. Sadly, not all do. I have a counselor friend from another town who shared the following story with me. He said his father was an alcoholic of whom he was very ashamed. As a kid he said, "Why is it that when I think of my last name, I think of s***?" Ugh, that's pain and shame over one's name. If you ever felt that way, or minister to someone feeling that way, know that you are dealing with a core issue- shame regarding one's very identity. Thankfully, in Christ, God has given us a new name, a brand new identity, for we have been adopted into our Father's forever family. You are a new creation, the old name and shame are gone. He has lifted that from you and now enables you to walk with your head held high (see 2 Cor.5;17; Lev.26:13). When a shameful thought comes, let it be a reminder to praise God for the new you and who you belong to.

We have been given such a good name, even if the world reviles us for it. Peter puts it this way- "If you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name" 1 Pet.4:16. What a great name we have been given! But our verse today in Proverbs is more about our daily reputation, as believers. "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold" God wants us to have a good reputation. A godly man "must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap" 1 Tim.3:7. Is there an unsaved (or saved) person that you might need to make things right with? Your reputation or restoring your good name is far more valuable than the cost of the humble pie. Make things right. "To be esteemed is better than silver or gold."

1.- Since God wants us to have a good reputation and be esteemed, what do you think brings such honor or esteem to a man?  (I'm a bit biased; I'd say it's a power HOUSE man who is pursuing GREAT and MANLY things. You may also wholeheartedly agree, but share what you think makes a man esteemed in your own words.) In light of Father's Day, this is timely. You might want to write about what makes a dad esteemed.

2.- Read Prov.22:1-16 and pick out a verse you like and share it and some of your thoughts regarding it. Then look for opportunities to share such. When you enrich others you enrich yourself, your name and esteem.  "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold" Prov.22:1.

Please continue to encourage other brothers on the blog. (What a good way to be esteemed:) Please post your points on the board.

3.- Optional: What's the meaning of your name? Any story regarding the picking out of your name?

Since there are new men with us, I'll share this funny one again regarding birth names. A pregnant woman from Washington, D.C. gets in a car accident and falls into a deep coma. When she wakes up she sees that she is no longer pregnant and frantically asks the doctor about her baby.
The doctor replies, “Ma’am you had twins! A boy and a girl. Your brother from Maryland came in and named them.”
The woman thinks to herself, “No, not my brother… he’s an idiot!”
She asks the doctor, “Well, what’s the girl’s name?”
“Denise.”
“Wow, that’s not a bad name, I like it! What’s the boy’s name?”
“Denephew.”

I shared the following powerful music video by Matthew West several months ago, so several of you may not have seen it before. What a great one to pass on to others.

  1. 1. Esteemed men exhibit integrity in all they do consistently. They are always righteous and call on the Lord in all decisions, they are calm and collected in tough situations, consistently show their dedication to the Lord no matter what the circumstances. Truly Love others more than themselves and are always encouraging and optimistic as they see beyond this life, but most of all they always display Jesus like characteristics and behavior.
    2. "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not stray from it." Proverbs 22:6
How true it is as I have watched those families who dedicate themselves and live by the word-- their children and children's children are strong believers and live also by the word. My goal is to see to it that my grandchildren are dedicated to the Lord and live by his word.
    3. My name was chosen after John F Kennedy called Jack Kennedy. A powerful man of influence-- but my only desire is to intentionally influence others to become believers in Christ and follow him. Power and worldly success means nothing to me.

    2. I really like Pro.22.1, A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. Also, Pro. 22:4 Humility is the fear of the Lord ; its wages are riches and honor and life.

Walking in a posture of humility means that you fear, respect, honor, worship, and revere the Lord. Thus one who fears follows the Lord's ways and commands. This is contrast to what it says in Romans, for the wages of sin is death. The wages of fear is life.

  4. 1- I believe a man is esteemed by his integrity with himself under God. I wish these times were a little bit easier for me. I have been an unfit father in the past with no integrity, but I thank god for his blessings in understanding him. I am one of those in the description above about having my fathers last name, it is unfortunate that I have to tell my daughters that I don't know when they may meet my father. But I am a better father abd I thank the lord for that.
    2-Proverbs 22:4

Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life, let's learn to stay humble for the fear of the lord I am still learning this but all of you help me to understand, let's fight the good fight.

  7. 1. To me an esteemed man is a person that is caring and sincere in everything he does. Not looking for personal gain but rather to help or build up people that he comes in contact with.
    2. Prov 22:3 "The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it. "

  8. 1. An esteemed man gains his esteem by his treatment of others and self. When he gives his word, he honors it. When he makes a promise, he keeps it. He does not do either lightly. He leads by example and strives, always, to be good, kind, and compassionate, even onto his enemies. He does not engage in activities that may damage his reputation. He tries his best to live by God's word and obey God's commandments. His words and his works reflect God's presence in him and are a light to those who live in darkness. He does not brag about himself or boast of his accomplishments. He does not put on airs or tries to come off as someone he isn't. His words are genuine and sincere. He speaks honestly and does not speak of badly of others. He gives praise when it is right to, asks forgiveness when he offends, and avoids repeating his mistakes. His wealth is measured in wisdom. He makes the most of the gifts God has endowed him with.

    2. Proverbs 22:2 "Rich and poor have this in common: The Lord is the Maker of them all." I may not possess monetary wealth (it isn't something I've ever had, so I've never had cause to wish for it), but I am an equal inheritor of Gods mercy and grace. Even when my pockets are empty, I am a rich man. Should I come to lose all that I own, I would be no less wealthy. My wealth does not lose its value; it cannot be stolen from me.

3: My name comes from Egyptian mythology. Osiris was the god of the afterlife, and once a pharaoh of Egypt whose jealous brother, Seth, murdered to usurp the throne. It was his wife who reassembled the cut up pieces of his body that Seth had dumped in the Nile and mummified him. Only one part was never retrieved (that particular body part that distinguishes a man), for which reason Osiris is also associated with the fertility of the land that borders the River Nile. Osiris weighs the heart of the dead against a feather to determine entrance into the afterlife. A heavy heart does not gain entrance. My mother was an avid reader and enjoyed mythology in particular.

Alternatively, it may derive from the Old English name OSGAR or its Old Norse cognate ÁSGEIRR, which may have been brought to Ireland by Viking invaders and settlers. In Irish legend Oscar was the son of the poet Oisín and the grandson of the hero Fionn mac Cumhail.
This name was popularized in continental Europe by the works of the 18th-century Scottish poet James Macpherson. Napoleon was an admirer of Macpherson, and he suggested Oscar as the second middle name of his godson, who eventually became king of Sweden as Oscar I. Another notable bearer was the Irish writer and humourist Oscar Wilde (1854-1900).

I eventually went to prison and several years later I came out a father that understood what was more important. That taking time out just to listen to what my kids have to say, communication is very important to have with your child. After you have a child it is not about "you" no more, it is about your child. We have to mold them and point them in the right direction. Children are so easily influenced but it is up to us to make sure they are influenced by positivity.

The Normans introduced this name to Britain, and it has been very common there since that time. It was borne by three kings of England including Richard I the Lionheart, leader of the Third Crusade in the 12th century.

  18. As a boy, there were several things that my father had taught me a man needed to and have in order to be respected. It wasn’t completely moral or sound advice but there was definitely nobility to what he had to offer. You see, my father was a gangster. His father was a gangster and his father…well, a gangster. Consequently, at a very early age, I was conditioned to be the same. Fortunately, Jesus had a different path but not before my “Pops” got to me and my brothers. People don’t always agree with the gangster mentality but even the Gangster of Gangsters, our City’s most Iconic Symbol of Gangster-ness, Mr. Al Capone is revered by most. Aside from the racketeering, extortion and bootlegging, he was a man of ethics and a code. This body of “codes” is something that I think most men are familiar with. What I’ve done, is taken some of those same “codes” combined them with scripture and reconstituted those codes. My “Pops” went to be with the Lord in 2004. I wish that my dad were still around so that I could share my interpretation of what he’s taught me:
    • It is important that you place your God above all
    • Love your woman. Protect her. Provide for her. Put her above all other women—including your own mother
    • Your kids (especially your daughters) will learn what is an acceptable level of treatment by a from watching how you treat their mother
    • Show your son that is honorable and noble to lead from the front (I remember seeing my father pull a gun on three huge men for tripping over a cousin of mine and not apologizing). He was ready to kill a man for not saying I’m sorry—to a kid for ACCIDENTALLY tripping over him! Weird? Yeah, but guess what? If I accidentally ever trip over a child, I am apologizing and I bet that dude did it from that point on.
There is more but this blog isn’t all about my dad. Moral is, we need to put God above all else.

6 Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

  19. 1) I think what makes a man more highly esteemed before others is one who constantly seeks and relies on God's strength and wisdom. He is a man who is filled and consistently displays the fruits of the spirit. And he is a man who seeks out to genuinely care about the welfare of others.

Proverbs 22:4 Humility is the fear of the Lord its wages are riches and honor and life.

I think humility is a key element in order to fear the Lord. It helps us to put in prospective our sinfulness and weakness so that we don't rely on our own inabilities but trust and depend upon God's wisdom and power. This delights the Lord

I believe that the presence of a man will esteem him the most. Present in the family with his friends being an encourager. If we look to our heavenly Father as an example; His presence with us is everlasting. If there is a close second item it would be staying obedient to his calling or commitments; or doing what you say you will do.

    2
Verse 22:6 stuck out to me: "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it."
I pray that we are committed to the children or the youth in our lives and will be intentional in directing their paths toward righteousness.

According to the website my name has a Germanic element meaning spear. That was interesting
Since we're talking about name today reminded me of Revelation 2:17 "…
and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it."
A new name will be to the victorious in heaven.

  21. 1) What makes a man honored, esteemed, would have to be what I seen demonstrated so often by my Father, Bob Dyckman, and grandfather, Rey Fuentes. Both of them have many characteristics that make me sit up and shape up when I think of them. Kindness, Compassion, Dependability, Servant Hearts, Integrity, Hard Work Ethic, Wisdom, Senses of Humor, Humbleness before God, and Love of Family among so much more. In the end, it doesn't matter if you are the strongest physically, smartest mentally, or best looking.....with these traits (which is by no means exhaustive of what they are), you set yourself apart from the usual men of the world and show true nobility and honor to a world that desperately needs it. When Men are Men, the way God calls us to be, all Creation benefits.

    2) Proverbs 22:2 "Rich and poor have this in common: The Lord is the Maker of them all."

This scripture stood out to me among so many great Proverbs to choose from. There is something about the beautiful simplicity of the wording, asserting that when everything is drained away, all are made equal at the throne, for God is most high among anyone and everyone - - - Rich and Poor, Believer and Non-Believer, Black and White, Man and Woman - - - He reigns above and it does not matter if you believe He exists or not. It reminds me of the verse in Matthew:

"He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." (‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭45‬b NIV)

God's handiwork of His Rule. His fingerprint, is on all Men's lives. He, after all, created each of them.

    3) My name, William, means "Determined Warrior". It was chosen by my dad. He is a huge history buff, and instilled that love in me. Because of his love of History, he named me after William, Duke of Normandy, or better known as "William the Conqueror". He led an army across the English Channel from France and conquered the country, becoming the King of England. It is derived from a Germanic name.

  22. 1. I believe what makes a man honorable and esteemed is when he follows Jesus's teachings. Loving, caring, forgiving, honest, humble, graceful, giving, and loyal are some characteristics of an esteemed man.

    2. Proverbs 22:15 A youngster’s heart is filled with foolishness, but physical discipline will drive it far away.

    3. My name Philip, means "friend of horses", friend, lover.

I am saddened that i will not be able to join everyone June 28th at 1pm at brother Jacks house. I have my nephew and future nieces baby shower to attend at that same time. Maybe you guys can change it to an evening time lol if not then i will just look forward to the next time.

  23. 1.I know what I esteem: a man who wants something noble and overcomes obstacles to attain it.

    2. GOD loves the pure-hearted and well-spoken; good leaders also delight in their friendship. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭22‬:‭11‬ MSG)

  24. 1- Say what esteem or honor to a man is how treats his family (children, wife), also relationship and friendships. Anyone can make friends but a true friend is one that will also be there no matter what you are going through. Any man can make children but a real man raises them. That's what I feel brings honor to a man. I've been learning to lead my family in the right path to God. Teaching them the love of God and who he is. Also letting them know that all we have is because God gave it to us.

2- Proverbs 22:6 New International Version (NIV)
6 Start children off on the way they should go,
and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

    Cross reference Ephesians 6:4
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

  25. 1. One thing that makes a man highly esteemed, at least in my eyes, is a Courageous Man = a man who stands for what is godly in action and in words, regardless of the results!! Kind of like all of our M3 Men :)

    2. Prov 22:7 says, "Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender." --To sum this up in 2 words " DEBT = SLAVERY". Let us "Not" and "Stop" placing ourselves in a slavery position to another person and/or corporations, because that is exactly what happens every time we borrow money :(

    3. My name "Israel " means, "he who wrestled with God". Like Jacob did in Genesis 32

  26. 1.- I think the way a man acts gives him a good reputation and esteem. It’s carrying himself in a respectable way even when things aren’t going his way. Showing people love and grace even if they haven’t earned it.

2.- Proverbs 22:6 Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it. This verse highlights how by giving children guidance when they are young they will live that way when they are older. But you also need to show them the right path, if you tell them but don’t do it yourself they will imitate your actions as they get older.

3.- I was named after my Godfather who was my mom’s uncle. The meaning of George is farmer / earthworker, which is appropriate since I liked to garden when I had a backyard.

  27. I think an esteemed man is done that knows God controls. Everything in their life do they must walk around with full faith in God.

  28. What make a man an esteemed person to me is how he carries himself around people but also when he is alone. Walking with a sense of humility knowing full well that every breath that one takes, it's is by God's own doing and will.

http://bible.com/97/pro.22.6-7.msg Point your kids in the right direction— when they’re old they won’t be lost. The poor are always ruled over by the rich, so don’t borrow and put yourself under their power.
As the day is coming that my little baby girl will be born(August), it becomes more relevant ok my prayer that my baby will never forsake God's word.

  29. 1.To love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul and with all your might. and to love your neighbor as yourself is what makes a man great in the kingdom of God.

2.Pro.22.12." The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge, but he frustrates the words of the unfaithful."

  30. 1) In my opinion, good character, moral uprightness, and faithfulness with what he has been given (examples: a man who cares & provides for his family or a man who uses his talents to give glory to God) are what gives a man a good reputation and esteem. My dad is a good example of the above.

    2) Proverbs 22:6 "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."

I always liked this verse. I've also seen it happen many times.

    3) My dad loves history a lot. As a result, he named me Alexander after Alexander III of Macedon ("Alexander the Great"). Anyway, my name means "Defender of Men". Needless to say, I like my name a lot.

  31. 1. - Esteem man has integrity and honesty, is trusted, a man that is genuinely concerned of others and ready to comfort and just be there to listen and share your thoughts. God has blessed me these last 4 years with many of these godly brothers from New Life Church, and from the small groups from Monday nites, Wednesday morning and M3.

2.- Prov. 22:12 "The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge, but he frustrates the words of the unfaithful."

God will always watch and protect the "truth" and faithful of his servants, and for those who lie and are untruthful will live in despair.

3.- While growing up I remember not liking my name because it seem so unusual, no one I knew had my name. Later as I got older it didn't seem to matter any more, I grew to like it. I also learn through a cousin from Mexico that my name Armando in Spanish meant that of warrior who is ready to pick up his armament to go to battle.

2 verse 4 stands out to me. Humility is such a rewarding quality and is linked to the fear of the Lord; it brings riches, honor and life.

3 My name means "guard". I like it and I like to think that It fits me.
