Wed.6.17.15...Pay Attention...Prov.22:17-29

When was the last time you were in a car accident or ran out of gas while driving? Hopefully, it's been a while. When was the last time you missed an exit? Since I drive a lot, that happens from time to time. Why? It's often the same reason people run out of gas- not paying attention soon enough. Many accidents happen because of distracted driving. People weren't paying attention to the road. In today's passage (Prov. 22:17-29) it begins by calling us to pay attention to something far more important than the road, our gas gauge or the exit signs. We are called by our Mentor and Father to pay attention to his wise words. This is so important that he goes on for five verses talking about the importance and benefits of paying attention to God's word. This is not the first time our Father has called us to pay attention to his words-
"Listen my sons, to a father's instruction; pay attention and gain understanding" 4:1.
"My son, pay attention to what I say, listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart, for they are life to those who find them" 4:20-22.
"My son, pay attention to my wisdom" 5:1.
"Now then, my sons, listen to me; pay attention to what I say" 7:24.

Here is a portion of our Father's exhortation to us today-
"Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach, for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips" 22:17-18. This reminds me of what you are doing. You're not just reading the Bible and quickly forgetting what you read. You are writing down your MP3 verses, reviewing them and passing them on to others. This is no small thing to God. Jesus declared in his Sermon on the Mount, "Whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven" Mt.5:19. You are practicing that and other GREAT things and it shows on the GREAT scoreboard. As you share the word with your family you are fulfilling God's great mandate for fathers- "These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up" Dt.6:6-7. I know a lot of Father's Day messages include that exhortation, and I'm sure there are a lot of men who hang their heads, having failed to do that. But now you can do that so naturally. "Hey, check out this powerful verse I got today. Why do you think this is so important?" (That's just one of many discussion starter questions you could use. Here's a couple others- What would it be like if no one followed this? How could we better live this out?)

Paying attention to the word of God is not easy; we have an enemy who seeks to distract us. Did you ever think that might be part of our struggle at times to be unstoppable in God's word? Such distractions from giving our attention to the priority of God's word is nothing new. Consider the plea of a famous preacher who lived in the mid 300s. "Please listen to me, you are not paying attention. I am talking to you about the Holy Scriptures, and you are looking at the lamps and the people lighting them. It is very frivolous to be more interested in what the lamplighters are doing...After all, I am lighting a lamp too, the lamp of God's word." John Chrysostom. His words remind me of Peter's- "we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place--until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts" 2 Pet.1:19.

Why is it that some Christians drift away from God and God's people? They don't keep paying careful attention to the word. "We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away" Heb.2:1. By God's grace, so long as you are in M3, that won't happen to you. You will get ongoing encouragement to pay attention to God's word. And we will call the brother who starts to drift. We will "encourage one another daily, as long as it is called "Today," so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness" Heb.3:13. It's been said, "This book will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from this book." But we are reminded by that previous verse and others that we also need to be with a group of people who will encourage us to hold firmly to the trustworthy message. The Christian life was never designed by God to be a Sunday morning spectator sport. That's why I'm so glad you are on the field, in the action, advancing the ball, advancing God's kingdom. You are paying attention!

Here's a picture I took recently of a car accident near my house. The police officer said he had to be doing over 50 miles an hour down Western Ave. He must have not been paying attention.
There were no other cars that caused him to drift from the other side of the street. The light pole stopped him from crashing through the windows of a building a few yards away.

1.- I've been in a few bad car accidents. (One was my fault. I was not paying attention.) How about you? What happened? Anybody not paying attention?

"When I die, I want to go peacefully like my grandfather did– in his sleep. Not yelling and screaming like the passengers in his car.”

2.- Read through Prov.22:17-29 and pick out a verse that grabs your attention and then share it and some of your thoughts with us. Write it down on your MP3 and look for opportunities to share it with others. ("Have all of them ready on your lips" Prov.22:18.)

I have never had anyone refuse one of our beautiful Greatest Minimovies cards until yesterday. It was all my fault. I didn't begin with any small talk. The dude was grooving to music under his headphones while waiting for the bus. Then once I started trying to signal that I wanted to give him the card, I realized he was mentally impaired. Only a dummy would have tried to pass out a card in that situation. (You can learn a lot from a dummy:) Slow down and pay attention Dave.

  1. 1. I was in an accident in February. Coming home late after a night of celebrating my birthday everything seemed to be going smoothly. Light traffic, but as I was cruising home, some guy ran a red light and I smashed into him. My car was totalled. I was ok. Ish came to my rescue after a quick call, but the other party definitely didn't pay attention and it happened all so fast. The other person was even arrested for being under the influence of something.

  2. 1. A couple of years ago my wife and I were on our way home from work. We were two blocks from our destination when a car ran a stop-sign and hit us the driver's side where I was. We were a little banged up but were fine for the most part. Firefighters were there right away to help us get out of the car. That is when I saw the driver of the other car and he said: "Sorry I didn't see you."
Not sure what distracted him but he definitely was not paying attention.
    2. Prov. 22:29 "Do you see someone skilled in their work?
    They will serve before kings;
they will not serve before officials of low rank."
This verse just goes along with Pastor Mark's message on Sunday that we need to be doing our best at work with a great attitude knowing that we are doing it for Christ and not for man.

  3. 1. The early morning of April 7, 2005 while driving into work I stopped at a stop sign. When I attempted to proceed, I lost traction and my truck began slipping and sliding. I was unaware that the intersection was covered in "Black Ice" from overnight rainfall. I instinctively believed the 4x4 would automatically kick-in and I'd be able to gain control. It kicked-in but didn't help, so I applied the brakes believing the new tires and anti-lock breaking system would get me out of the jam. Didn't help either! I "white-knuckled" myself right into the path of a minivan that was illegally parked in the pedestrian crosswalk at a speed of approximately 5-10 mph.

I went house to house trying to find the owner. Several houses later, I found him and turns out he was a Pastor for a Pentecostal Church. We exchanged insurance information, filed accident reports and had our vehicles repaired. I had not payed attention to the road conditions that morning and to make matters worse, I placed my trust in the vehicle "safety features" as opposed to placing my faith in the Lord.

    2. "Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared." Proverbs 22:24-25

Reminds me that I should try to steer clear of individuals that are always angry about "this, that or the other".

  4. 1) I was in an accident last January, I was merging on to I-55 and was not being cautious, I noticed a tractor hauling a container and decided to step on the gas to stay in front of him. The entrance ramp had not been plowed recently and I ended sliding sideways onto the middle lane, where the tractor had moved. I was struck in the fender and my ExpIorer was totaled. I was okay after a few weeks of muscle pain. I had not noticed him move, or else I would not have stepped on the gas.

  6. 1) A month before I got out of the military, I was on the express way in North Carolina. I pulled off on the side of the road to let off a hitch hiker who was heading North at the Interstate exchange. Suddenly my car was struck from behind by a drunk driver. His car was turned upside down. I was knocked unconscience as my car was crushed from behind. The rear bumped was smashed to within a foot of my driver side door. The roof of my car folded, hit my head and knocked me out. I came to just before they placed me in an ambulance. God spared me as I only required 7 stitches on the back of my head.

    2) Proverbs 22:29
Do you see someone skilled in their work?
They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.

I've noticed the people who were very skilled at performing their job at work. They were very consistent at efficiently producing good product. They were very observant and immediately reported anything that seemed unusual in the production process. The learned quickly and seldom repeated the same mistakes. The were self starters and required minimum supervision. They got noticed by management and got promoted eventually to became group or team leaders. Most of them excelled in leading other team members well. Some were not good in their people skills and raised the employee turn over rate.

  7. 1: I was in a car accident back in 2008. Back when I was living in sin. Me and two others where out driving around looking for trouble, we ended up doing things that I now realize were not worth doing. We ended up getting chased down western ave. The driver was flying he must have been doing 50mph. He tried to swerve to the other lane to avoid hitting another car when he lost control, we ended up hitting a fire hydrant. The driver ended up busting open his nose, the back seat passager hit the dash board, and I ended up with a fractured hip. I thank god I was wearing my seat belt or who knows what could have happend. I had to stay hospitalized and had to go through therapy to walk again. Til this day I thank god he gave me another chance at life

  11. I have been blessed to have never experienced a bad car accident, though I have been in my share of fender benders. The latest of these happened while I was leaving the parking lot of a store. I was so fixated on keeping the ice cream I had purchased for my wife from toppling over, that when I hit the breaks behind a car and the cup started to spill over, I reached down to stop it and let my foot off the gas for a second. That second was all the time necessary for my fender to make contact with the bumper of the car in front of me. The impact wasn't too hard, but hard enough to damage the paint of the other car. My car somehow suffered no damage, but the accident was clearly my fault. The driver was even kind enough to accept just the cost of repairing the paint. Even when I took my eyes off the road, God's grace was working in the other man, and his loving hand kept both of us from injury.

Proverbs 22:19 "So that your trust may be in the Lord, I teach you today, even you." What struck me most about this verse is that final emphasis: "...even you." The Proverbs have always spoken to my heart; I can relate to almost every single one, but this was more direct. God is speaking directly at me, here. Even you, man of God in the making...even you, man of M3, YOU can still learn much from Me, your God and Father, and so I teach YOU today, so that you may trust me. My amazing wife will be undergoing a surgical procedure tomorrow to retrieve her eggs that may become our children (God willing). Throughout the days leading up to this surgery, her body has been submitted to a battery of physical and emotional tests. It pains me to see my wife in pain, and it was difficult consenting to this procedure knowing that my wife's life may be at risk, but I have placed my trust in the Lord. In these hours before her surgery when my trust may be tested, God is telling me, listen, look to me, take comfort in my words...I see you where you are and I know the trouble in your heart. Know that I am with you and that you can trust in me...even you.

  13. 1. I was in a two car accident because I was not paying attention. The last car accident I was in was a fender bender. I was on my cell phone yelling at my cousin for something really dumb he did that I do not remember. The van in front of me unexpectedly stops and I hit my brakes but did not stop fast enough. I hit the van and broke his rear bumper. I quickly took full responsibility and ask the man that I would fix his van because I was driving on a suspended license. The man agrees and around the corner there was a car shop. We took the van for an estimate and left the van. We agree that I would pay the bill and he would pick up his van in two days. I thank the God that we were able to resolve the problem without getting the police involved. All the glory goes to God. Amen.

We took a "country road", which the shoulder was lined with gravel. As we were driving I began looking in the middle compartment and we went off the road n lost control in the gravel and flipped in the air 3 times. My passenger had no injuries but I had 5 bruised ribs and a few cuts on my arm.

  16. Speaking of car crashes. Here is an interesting fact about Singapore and car crashes: If a driver knocks down a tree in Singapore they are charged for the tree, plus a calculation of its increased value of time (its age).

1 I haven't been in any bad car accidents (Thank God!) I hit someone's bumper while driving on 87th street just past Western. Someone stopped at the bottom of the hill, but the road was wet and my tires didn't have great traction. I was paying attention, but I knew I was riding on tires with bad traction.

2 Verse 21 stands out the most to me. I understand that my relationship with God is a personal relationship, but that my actions are not meant to impact others outside of myself. I want to do better at building up the reputation of God's people and be a better ambassador for His Kingdom.

  17. 1- I've been in a lot of car accidents. I can honestly and confidently say that none of them were my fault or the fault of the driver in the car i was in. Once my best friend and I were driving down Pulaski, a drunk driver driving opposite of us swerved into our lane. My friend managed to switch lanes but the other car clipped the rear end of the car. We spun out of control, when the car settled we attempted to get out of the car but the other driver began to take off. We pursued the driver to get his license plate to give when we called the police. We followed him until he drove into a dead end behind some factories. Long story short we got his plate number and headed straight to the police office. The police went to the car owners home to apprehend him. Turns out the owner of the car had lend his friend the car that evening. The police dragged the owner of the car out of bed and took him to the station where we were at filing the report.

  18. 1.Some years ago I used to drive a small sports car. One day I came up to a red light. I slowed down to to what thought would be a stop. Well, with a loud screech and a bang I ended up in the middle of the intersection. I managed to get out of the car and behind me was semi truck that just managed to hit the brakes in time not roll over me. The back of the car up to the doors was totaled. That was the end of my sports car days. I thank my Lord that he was watching over me.
    2. Prov.22:17 Incline your ears and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge.
" A wise Godly man's words are confirmed from observation and experience. Hear them with humility and deep attention. Their words are not only to be heard but meditated and pondered."
Years ago, I went through difficult trying times in business and marriage. Both had gone beyond repair. Someone told me to talk to this elderly brother from church . I did see him. First thing he told me was "where have you been ? I've been waiting for you."He had heard of me. Next , he told me "The Lord loves you". Loves me? I could not understand with everything falling around me. "Yes , God loves you. He wants you to stop, let go, and let him take control of your life. Trust him. He will will show you his great power and his love for you."From that day on ,when I would visit him, my head would be turned sideways like a parrot so I could grasp everything he said. He became good friend and mentor. My good friend past away. A great gift he left me was embedding in my heart that God is all powerful, faithful and loving.

The guy said he did not see us. It's crazy cause my friend who was driving just got the car a week before and the car ended being totaled. The people who saw the crash and the police were shocked that my friend and I got out of the car the doors would not open. The air bags didn't deploy. I used that time to tell me friend that God was watching over us. It was not our time to go. The kid felt so bad about the accident I just encourage him and tried put a smile on his face. 20. I have been in a couple fender benders; none of which were major with the exception of an accident that I was in with another member of M3, Rich Guardiola. He was driving, another friend of ours was in the passenger seat and I was passed out in the back seat. He fell asleep at the wheel and hit a pole. The three of us walked away. The two of them both had some injuries while I walked away nearly unscathed.

22Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court 23 for the LORD will take up their case and will exact life for life.

  21. 1. I had a very severe accident last August and it was the result of me looking down to read a text. How ridiculous of me and neglectful. I ran a light and hit the side of a truck at 50 miles/ hr without hitting the brakes. I hit so hard that my chest broke the steering wheel and my hand went through the windshield. The impact tore all the cartilage away from my ribs across my chest and lower right side. I was almost unconscious and in severe pain as I could only breath in small breaths as there was a loud clicking in my chest with each breath. The suv was wiped out and the engine was pushed all the way back to the drivers compartment. The hood was over the top of the car and the battery had exploded emitting serious fumes.
Upon contact I immediately thanked the Lord for saving my daughter, as I had just dropped her off, and asked him to protect the other driver. Then I began to give the Lord a Praise offering for my relationship with him. I told him that if it was his will to take me, that I was grateful if he accepted me as I knew I didn't deserve it, but I gave myself to him.
Then the ambulance showed up and the EMT told me that it sounded like I had broken my sternum and punctured my lungs. Once under care at the Emergency room, they told me that I had torn the cartilage from my chest and that the pain would be severe for months and that it would be a 9-12 month full recovery. PTL as I was back in the gym in less than 3 months. I thanked the Lord and asked him to tell me what he wants from me. I know and I am focused on it.

  26. 1) Thankfully I have not been in any accidents as bad as some I am reading on this blog lol (Not sure I would want to drive after one of those :). Recently though, right after getting back from my honeymoon, I was driving from my parents house in the rain, when a teen driving zoomed past (thinking I had a stop sign). I didn't, but I noticed him not stopping for me, started to break instinctively. While that slowed my acceleration, it did not stop me due to the slick streets, and I T-Boned his pickup truck with.....my dad's minivan. Praise God me and my wife and the kid were fine, and his truck too. The only problem was my car's front bumper and some internal issues in the front.

Still waiting for his insurance claim to go through though.....

    2) The verse I chose is:

Proverbs 22:29 “Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.”

Just another way that the Lord pushes us to do all things the our utmost. Our work is for the King of All! It should be skilled and diligent.

  27. Well with me in the time that I was able to drive, because I cannot drive now, I had one major accident when driving drunk, it's like Dave posted the picture up top but in my situation there were parked cars that I slammed into. I was drunk and fell asleep for like 5 seconds. Which that's how it felt. I never payed attention to gods little hints and now I live by paying attention all the time. Even being on my bike I am always paying attention, in everything I do I pay attention and gods word is always there and it's an awesome feeling to hear his voice in other men's words. I want to confess that I have been feeling bummed lately and after speaking to a couple of brothers I feel like God has spoken to me and I need to be paying attention to what he has been able to give me. I am grateful for this group and the stories I am able to read during the day, for the daily devotions I get through out the day that motivates me. My drinking career affected my driving privileges and God willing I am able to get some sort of break in a couple of years. I have been without driving for almost 5 years and have learned that the lord and people like the ones that are on this blog have been always there to direct me and teach me but I was not paying attention
    2- Proverbs 22:17-18

Pay attention and turn your ear to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach, for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heartand have all of them ready on your lips.
I will always love by this rule. Thank you lord.

You are in the process of righting the wrongs and it can be extremely painful and drawn-out but the payoff is peace and righteousness. "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." Hebrews 12:11

  28. 1. Just taught a class of twelve teens on the dangers of distracted driving. I had to gracefully help a student behind the wheel that had trouble not seeing stop signs. I told her "you cant drive with tunnel vision. You have to keep your eyes moving. If you down at the thick white line you won't miss it". Sometimes the truth is right in front of us but we miss it because we are distracted. We take our eyes off the road of eternity and live for here and now.
I want to walk with wise men and know wisdom. I hope I can pass this on to my kids.
    2. Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before obscure men. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭22‬:‭29‬ NASB)

  31. That’s a good joke Dave.

I’ve been in a few car accidents which were not my fault. The worst one was when I was stopped on the road with my hazard lights flashing and was read ended. A woman in the other car was taken to the hospital because she hit her face. Another person who saw the accident stopped and said he thought the car that hit me was racing with another car. When the insurance companies finally settled everything they said I was 25% at fault because of where I stopped. Being older now and knowing that road better I probably wouldn’t think of stopping there again.

Proverbs 22:24-25 Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, (25) or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared. This highlights that you pick up the habits of the people you surround yourself with.

  32. 1) Yes sir. It was my fault, I was arguing with my wife early in our marriage in a car ride to work early in the morning while it was dark and raining, I blew a stop sign and hit an Audi in the rear corner panel. I was not paying attention to the task at hand.

    2) 22:18 for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips.

Gods wisdom must become part of our thought process, not simply an addition to our memorization. We must speak this wisdom into our own lives as it is easier to counsel others rather then ourselves. Since our eyes look outwards we must learn to look inwards. Further more we must share these great treasures with others.

  33. 1. I've never got in a crash that was my fault. People have crashed into me though. All were minor rear end crashes. Most along South Pulaski Road. If you've ever driven down south Pulaski, there are lots of people who make there own rules of the road. One time somebody rear ended my car pretty hard and just took Another time I was in a parking lot and someone decided to drive across the parking lot through the empty parking spaces while I'm on the arrow marked road and hit me on my corner rear bumper. Another time someone on Pulaski was speeding on the bus lane and I was making a left with cars letting me through. He hit my corner front bumper. He had no insurance. I figured this is a no win situation so we settled on him giving me a hundred dollars. Be careful when driving down Pulaski.

  34. I remember one accident that scared me "the hoot" out of me. It was a time where I start work at 6a.m but also I was giving a ride to a co worker so had to leave extra early. I remember driving pretty fast since that early of day it's not so much traffic. As it rained prior to me getting on road so had to be extra cautious, well sad to say that one car was not paying attention that I was on the side of him, sharply merged on my lane causing a side swipe and made my car to spins mutiple times (with on going traffic not stopping) finally ending on top of median. Everyone was okay, when I tried to get out and check on the other car, suddenly that car took off like a rocket. So upset cause person did not take responsibility of his actions and left not even making sure if we were OK. One big learning curb is to always be alert and aware at all times of the day.

  35. 1. Yes, I totaled my brother Rey's New Yorker once, as I was rushing to work in slippery snowy weather. I actually smashed into a church van :( Thank God no one was hurt! This took place when I was not a christian. The driver was very nice and was concerned for my health and he never showed up in court nor did he try to sue me for damages. Long story short, my brother's car was totaled but the insurance company gave him a small check :) I should have been paying attention to the slippery weather :(

  36. 1.- Sorry I just lose my posting, here is my revised condense version. Had many small vender benders, and this one I recall because it was scary and life threatening. I spun out of control on Ryan expressway on a cold sunny Sunday morning on way to parents house to have breakfast. Was going southbound when I hit black ice and spun into many 360 donuts before coming to stop with my truck facing north into oncoming traffic that was a far distance away giving me time to turn around in the right southbound direction. How I was able to stay on road is beyond me, I just let the slide take me for a ride, did not overreact, happen so quick, it was surreal. God was in control and shield and protected me.

To be consistent I recall an accident a few years back where I was not paying attention and was distracted at a red light which I thought was green and I rammed the vehicle in from of me. Paris God there was no damage for his vehicle however he was shook up and he said that everything in his vehicle flew forward from the impact. The damage was only on my truck and I had to deal with it on my own since I was at fault.

What was a very helpful pointer for me was verse 22:24-25

ON befriending a man of anger I believe this wisdom is tailored to befriending any negative influence; a type of person that is warned agains for brining down what God has already raised up. We can entangle ourselves in the wrong path and incorrect leadership when guidance is placed incorrectly

  38. 1. I have been in a few fender benders but nothing serious. One I was driving a delivery truck and I was about to drive into a dock. When I pulled forward another driver pulled into the dock where I was going to park. When I was reversing I felt a jerk and heard a thump. I could not see the car from my mirrors. When I exited my vehicle the guy was still sitting in the car and was mad. I told him that I was parking in the spot that was empty when I looked and he should have never parked there. I was at fault and we decided to not go thru the insurance. I paid for the damages myself.

    2. Proverbs 22: 26 NIV "Do not be one who shakes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts; 27 if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you. I have seen people get items or loans and are unable to pay. They are drowning in debt. This has happen to me and my wife. We made it first priority to pay off everything we owed. We might accrue a little debt but we try to pay it off as soon as we can. What a relief taken from our shoulders by not owing. What have done a budget and they work. I can sleep at night.
