Tues.4.7.15...I Don't Believe That Jesus Really Rose From the Dead...part 3

I don't Believe That Jesus Really Rose From the Dead! Part 3

This past Sunday (Easter), my family and I first watched the movie, "God's Not Dead." I liked it. Hopefully you won't run into such angry atheists. If you meet up with an atheist who is at least open to discuss spiritual things, you can pass on the video we looked at last week for those who say, "I'm an Atheist." The student in the movie talked about things covered there, but didn't pursue the greater argument for "God's not Dead" and that is the resurrection of Christ. That is so powerful. Quickly move to discuss who Christ is and his resurrection to prove there is a God.

The second program we watched was "AD" and that certainly emphasized the certain death and resurrection of Christ. (I especially liked seeing Eddie in the New Life commercial:)

Yesterday, we began looking at 3 theories that skeptics have come up with to deny Jesus' resurrection. We looked at the Swoon theory (swoon: to faint aka the Houdini theory:), the Twin theory, and the Hallucination theory. Let's now discover 5 other theories revealed and debunked in the following video.

Here's a reminder of the type of whip (flagrum) used on Jesus. Many men died from just being scourged by it, let alone being then crucified.

Read Mt.28:1-20. You'll notice this passage reveals when the stolen body theory got started.

Hey, why does it say in verse 17 that some of the eleven disciples doubted when they saw Jesus on the mountain in Galilee? They had even eaten meals with him at least a couple times in Jerusalem shortly after he rose from the dead. How could they possibly doubt? Here's my take on it. They were climbing the mountain in Galilee where they were to meet Jesus (28:7,10). (Perhaps this was the same mountain where he had first called them and appointed them as his special disciples- Luke 6:12-13.) As they climbed, they saw him and worshiped him. But some wanted to get closer before they would bow down to just any being. Angels were not to be worshiped (Perhaps doubting Thomas was one of those who doubted :) So Jesus once again took the initiative to dispel their doubts because the next verse says, "Then Jesus came to them and said..." 28:18. Interestingly, this is exactly what Jesus did earlier when the disciples saw him from a distance walking on the lake at night (Mt.14:25-32). They weren't sure who he was then either, so he also came near and spoke to them. And when he climbed into the boat, they worshiped him. When you are convinced who Jesus truly is, you worship him!

The blind man in John 9 also worshiped Jesus once Jesus came near and revealed who He was to him (John 9:35-38). And after our risen Lord spent 40 days with his disciples, notice what happened- "...while he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God." When you are convinced who Jesus truly is, you worship him!

1.-Share one thing that impresses you from what you've read and or watched on the video today.

2.-Write on your MP3 card, "When they saw him, they worshiped him" Mt.28:17.
Isn't that what we will do when He comes back for us and we see Him face to face?!

Don't leave this mountaintop without worshiping the risen Jesus!
Here's a great song to prime the pump-

  1. 1. Video does a great job in refuting false theories about the resurrection of Jesus. Knowing that we have the truth on our side should fill us with boldness and confidence to be better communicators to the lost of the great redemptive message that Jesus died on the cross for out sins and was resurrected on the third day.
Mat. 28:19,20 "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

I was at the Pastors Meeting yesterday and one of the guest pastors talked about being passionate for the lost like we have passion for our wives, the love we have for them should be how we love and pursue them. Just like Christ loves and pursues His bride, us...may He give you that confidence. Roger he is your confidence and strength!

Matthew 28:17b " but some doubted"
Doubt= to be uncertain about something; be undecided in opinion or belief. (Dictionary.com)

Doubt is not necessarily unbelief. It can be simply the struggle within us to understand something beyond our current comprehension levels. Mark 9:24 b "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”

"How easily we doubt that which we don't understand" (My own)

  3. 1.-Share one thing that impresses you from what you've read and or watched on the video today. 1) This video presents 4 additional theories that cannot be substantiated. The wrong tomb, stolen body, legend and the Quranic account or Islam scripture written approximately 600 to 700 years after Jesus resurrection. These theories are not base on any proof or actual eyewitness, they are all conjectures to dissuade us from believing in the resurrection of Jesus. The theories against Christianity covered, are the conspiracies of the evil forces prevalent in this world that wish to muddle our minds and take our focus away from Christ our Savior. Jesus coming, persecution, crucifixion and resurrection were prophesied and came to be, as written by the prophets, why or who can question Christ's resurrection is beyond my comprehension. The Gospels also records the life and time of Jesus and his miraculous way and ultimately His crucifixion and resurrection. Jesus has given us a new and eternal life through His death. Our faith will be tested at times, that's why we need to stay in the Word to educate ourselves in preparation to take on the falsehood we encounter. Jn.4:24 "God is Spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth." 2) Did it.

"When they saw him, they worshiped him" Mt.28:17.

The stolen body theory...wow. These men went to death for a lie? What did they have to gain? Nothing. There was no riches. They weren't famous men trying to hide a claim against them. They stuck to the Gospel of Jesus to the grave and never changed the story.
It was also interesting to know that the Quran does talk about the arrest, crucifixion and death of Jesus, but the belief that Jesus was assumed and not resurrected is completely different.

Enjoy the study. Good book that talks about these as well, More Than A Carpenter.

  8. 1- Matthew 28: 17 "when they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted." This verse just proves a point that some people have little to no faith to some people have some faith to a lot of faith. Some people have to see thing in person and some people believe without seeing. Proof, evidence and seen in person is what some people need that have little to no faith. People who know God in a personal why only needs faith.

It goes to show you that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. There is no one in history that has impacted the world like Jesus.

    b) From the scripture reading what stands out to me, is the human beings capacity to doubt God no matter how constant or obvious the evidence. As life passes I at times am both doubting Thomas and faithful Abraham

The older I've gotten, it's not been doubt that I've battled, but despair. How long O Lord, how long?! Some of the lament psalms that earlier in life I wasn't attracted to, have more attraction to me now. And how much more I long for His return to make this wrong world right.

    2. Brother Tony, agreed! "human beings capacity to doubt God no matter how constant or obvious the evidence." Moses had the difficult chore of telling a generation of Israelites what abundant blessings they were about to inherit in the Book of Deuteronomy. They had known nothing but desert life so how can they envision something they had never seen? The same is true for us!

What impressed me, is the amount of detail and evidence provided in God's Word to be able to prove the resurrection and to refute all the many variant theories that contradict that Jesus rose from the dead. God made sure that our faith and hope is anchored to the rock of Truth which is His Word. And praise God that His Word stands taller and appears more solid after critical examination.

  16. 1. What struck me from the video is why would the disciples give there lives up for something that's not true. I don't know any man who would give there life up for a false profit. I believe they gave there lives up because he was risen from the dead. They knew exactly why they gave their lives up because they believed and knew he was risen.

    3. Brother James, "Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die." (Romans 5:7) Peter denied Jesus 3 times before the crucifixion but upon being reaffirmed and reestablished by Jesus, tradition says that Peter was martyred for his faith. He even requested and was approved to be crucified upside-down because he said he wasn't worthy to die in the same manner/position as Jesus Christ.

Well said, "They knew exactly why they gave their lives up because they believed and knew he was risen."

I'll always find it odd that anyone would even try to use those Qurannic theories as ways to try disproving the Gospel cosidering that the Quran was written 600 years after Jesus Christ was on Earth ( they were incredibly unbelievable especially the one about Judas replacing Jesus on the cross.). Matthew 28:18-20

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

There are many ways that we can decidely create an excuse that will in some hope refute truth. The source for much of arguments against and differing ideals is doubt and mistrust. From those is usually fear. The power fear can lead a person to shake in their boots, question authorities, and even have scales put right back onto their eyes.
