What do you say to Jehovah's Witnesses who come knocking on your door?
Many years ago, I taught a seminar at New Life on "Witnessing to the Witnesses." Though the JWs give out all kinds of literature, I learned they are forbidden to take "apostate literature" from Christians. So I actually made photo-copies of their own material that exposed their errant beliefs.
And there are many. Just make sure you don't spend your time on secondary issues such as why they don't vote, celebrate birthdays or accept blood transfusions. Focus on Jesus. The following short video does that.
So what happened when I sought to share photocopies of their own material? They still wouldn't accept them! Ugh! Those who come to your door are hard core members. They are not at all doubting what they believe. They are also taught in their Watchtower publications to "avoid independent thinking." This brings us to a very important point. JWs claim their only authority source is the Bible. (Mormons claim three other additional books divinely guide them.) But truth be told, their real authority as to what to believe is their Watchtower organization, with its magazines, tracts and books. It tells them how to interpret the Bible. Remember they are told to "avoid independent thinking." For example, once when a JW conceded a point I made refuting a belief they held, that person was not allowed back with their leader to our follow up discussion.
To make matters worse, the Watchtower organization created their own version or perversion of the Bible, called the- New World Translation, which actually changes God's holy word to support their errant beliefs. That is a damnable sin! (Rev.22:18-20) One example of their outright distortion of God's word in their Bible is in John 1:1. In the original Greek language that it was written in, and in over 20 different Bible versions, it declares of Jesus that "the word was God." But in their perversion they changed it to read- "the word was a god." As you saw in the video, they view Jesus as less than God. By the way, this is one of two distinguishing marks of a cult. First, all cults have a lesser view of Jesus- less than God. Second, they have another authority source other than the Bible.
So what do I say now when Jehovah's Witnesses come to my door? Not much. I don't spend a lot of time with these hard core JWs. I will ask them, "Do you believe the Bible is the only inspired book from God?" When they say "Yes," I will then say, "I would like to invite you back one month from now, if you will do me just one favor. Set aside all your Watchtower literature for the next month and just read from any Bible other than the Watchtower Bible, asking God to reveal to you the truth about Jesus." This is the Bible challenge I give them. None of them has ever come back. I don't feel guilty for not spending a lot of time with them when they knock on my door. I have exposed their reliance on their Watchtower publications and pointed them to the truth. When I see JWs on the sidewalk, and I'm heading out, I often simply say in passing, "Jesus is Jehovah!" :)
1.-Read the great introduction John pens to his gospel-John 1:1-18 and share one thing that strikes you from this passage and/or something that was covered today.
2.-Pick any verse or part of a verse that you really like from John 1:1-18 and write on your MP3 card. Then look for opportunities to share that gold with others.
Here's a simple way to look at all the "religions" of the world. First, view all the Christian denominations as living in one high rise. Imagine there's a different floor for each, such as the Baptists, Methodists, Pentecostals, Presbyterians, Lutherans, and even those who call themselves non-denominational, such as New Life. Historically, these all have agreed that the Bible is God's inspired word and that Jesus is God come in the flesh to save all those who repent and receive him by faith alone.
Now picture another apartment building. It's not nearly as big. It holds all those we would call cults. They talk about Jesus and the Bible, but they don't believe that Jesus is God or that the Bible is the one and only authoritative book from God. On one floor live the JW's. On other floors you'd find the Mormon's, Christian Science, and small wacko cults that have surfaced like David Koresh's group or Jim Jones' group. These wacko cults have a wacko leader who is very controlling- "God's voice" to the gullible people who may follow such leaders even to death.
The third and final apartment building houses the many non-Christ centered religions of the world. One floor is for the Hindus, other floors are home to the Buddhists and the Muslims, for example. Since the Muslim religion of Islam is so controversial these days, we will look at it tomorrow.
Hey Dave, which building do the Catholics live in?
That's a good question. Unlike cults, they do believe that Jesus is God. But like cults, they do have a another authority other than the Bible, the declarations of the popes. They believe that these are also inspired of God. So you get to decide what building to put them in. Or maybe we should have a fourth building just for them. That's probably the best answer.

I'm looking forward to this Friday to read how you've enriched others with what you've been learning. This could be sharing words or videos with believers or unbelievers. Our mission is to multiply manly men. (So enrich, enlist, exemplify and encourage.)
What advice do you wish you were given when you turned 16? Today is my son David's 16th birthday. If you care to give him any wise advice, I will be sure to pass it on to him. Thanks much! He hears me talk about you guys in M3 everyday. (Yes, I'm rather fond of you all :)
Thanks to today's fire team and any and all others who would please give a word of encouragement to those that were MIA yesterday on the blog- Antonio, Chuy, Lucas, Israel and Oscar

1. Thank you Dave for putting together this lesson on the JW's, at different times in my life I have read or heard people speak on the different cults but slowly I have forgotten many of their beliefs. Therefore it is great to have this summary available to better equip us to defend our faith and be ready to share the true Word of God with people we may encounter.
ReplyDeleteThe verse that is important to me is John 1:14 "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth."
To realize that the Son of God come and took on human form and lived amongst us is so amazing. God knew that this was the only way for us to find salvation, to have Jesus come and die on the cross and be resurrected on the third day. And all we have to do is put our faith in Him as the only way to be spared from condemnation. Thank you God for your gift of salvation.
Thank you Roger for encouraging me by your appreciation and your love and faithfulness. May the Lord add many more men to your legacy. Best of blessings!
DeleteThanks roger and the same verse stuck out to me like a sore thumb also. It's a verse that soothes the soul.
Delete1. John 1:4 ESV In him was life, and the life was the light of men. This verse stuck out to me. It reminds me when we believe in him and accept Jesus Christ in to are lifes. We receive his light that can't be covered up by darkness. Thanks Dave for the verse Revelations 22:18-20. Good verse to know especially for people that are lost in false bibles.
ReplyDelete2.Did it
Thank You Lord for James. May you continue to shine your light and favor upon him.
DeleteGreat minds think alike brother! I was thinking about that same verse and the next one.... John 1; 5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
DeleteThanks Dave for the informative lecture, I have always thought about the JW's and how they practice their religion. And it's interesting to know that Michael transforms into Jesus. I honestly have always thought that maybe it's the devils work through them and how they go about things. Never really understood their ways but I have a glimpse. I have a friend that I haven't spoken to in a while but I remember when he first got sober, he "joined" the JW's organization and he tried to persuade me to come and experience his life changing experience and to just come one time that he was not pressuring me to do so.
ReplyDeleteI obviously did not want to but out it off completely because I just didn't want to offend his intentions, but that is and was not me. I just don't fully comprehend why there are some many people in this world that INTERPRET AND ASSUME the scriptures in they're own ways other than the right way. I have always avoided even talking to them because I didn't know what to say or how to defend myself from my beliefs, but I'm learning now.
An as for your son Dave, I can picture my 13 year old and my little sister which now she's 19, and what I have told them in the past. Stay focused on principles, priorities, and responsibilities. The decisions you make in life will bring consequences and based upon your decisions, that will determine whether they will be good or bad decisions that will bring you good or bad consequences. So stay positive and focus on the right decision even if it doesn't feel right.
Thanks Guillermo for sharing and also your very good advice that I will pass on to my son.
DeleteGuillermo, I avoided the JWs too because I didn't know how to defend my beliefs. Now I'm looking forward to the next time they come to the door. I just watched the video again with my 15 year old son and he couldn't believe some of their believes either.
Delete1. I've heard it somewhere don't know where but we should study the true Word and then we will be able to spot false religions. That's what the U.S.Treasury Department does they study the real currency and then they are able to spot counterfeit currency.
ReplyDeleteI particularly like these verses out of today's reading, we have eternal life through Christ Jesus, but the world did not recognize him. the darkness did not overcome Him.
"In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him." John 1:4-5,10
Good illustration George- study the genuine and you'll be able too spot the counterfeit.
DeleteBrother George, yes! Become intimately knowledgeable with the authentic, and you'll be able to detect a counterfeit. God bless you :-)
DeleteThe JW's changed the bible to suit their financial wants. And where did they get the original bible that was used to translate their own. I don't know how they not see that their group/cult was started after the original was written. How do they accept so much change in the bible.
ReplyDeleteJohn clearly says that Jesus is God throughout the gospel and so does Jesus.
John 10:30 I and the Father are one.”
John 1:18
18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
Great points Sam!
ReplyDeleteBrother Sam, greed may be one the reasons. May the Lord remove the scales from their eyes that they may see clearly that Jesus is the only way!
DeleteDave, I would tell your son to continue to seek guidance from his father who is a dedicated follower of Jesus Christ. To remember that what is popular is not always right and what is right is not always popular. Never conform to the world it will lead you astray.
Delete1. "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." John 1:14
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave for sharing these truths, they help us distinguish between perversed cult lies and the true Word of God.
How can we begin to understand and describe the indescribable?!
"Then Manoah inquired of the angel of the Lord, “What is your name, so that we may honor you when your word comes true?” He replied, “Why do you ask my name? It is beyond understanding." Judges 13:17-18
"His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself." Revelation 19:12
"He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God." Revelation 19:13
Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one manifested in three distinct forms, much like water(liquid), ice(solid) and gas(vapor)
Wow good stuff brother! Thanks for going above and beyond to share the Word with us!
DeleteWell put. The Holy Trinity of God cannot be separated.
DeleteThanks Robert! You just helped me out. Someone in my Tuesday night group has been questioning the Holy Trinity and I think you just gave us another way to try to explain it to him.
DeleteAmen brother!!
DeleteNo one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.
ReplyDelete(John 1:18 ESV)
I also see this verse as a clear depiction that Jesus was the son of God who was known for all the miracles he did. I read the bible and realize that I get drawn to it not because someone told me to do it but because this power comes over me and I get a feeling that this is the right thing to do. I have felt the happiness that you can only get from following God and the only thing I can say about that happiness is that it is something you can not explain it is a feeling you may never be able to experience somewhere else.
Amen! Our true happiness and joy comes from God! Thank you Lord for giving us the Light that shines in darkness.
DeleteBrother Andre, I'm filled with joy with your statement " I have felt the happiness that you can only get from following God". Glad to have you on-board :-)
DeleteGod is truly blessing you Andre! Others will undoubtedly note that. May they come to enjoy Him as well.
DeleteThank you Dave for sharing these facts about Jehovah Witnesses with us! I am learning so much here. It is quite amazing ;) I am looking forward to seeing a JW and telling them that "Jesus is Jehovah!"
ReplyDeleteJohn 1: 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
When i was 16 i was a very misguided youth. I surrounded myself with other kids that i thought were cool. It caused me alot of trouble. I would tell Dave's son to surround himself with positive friends, stay in the Word, play as many sports as possible, determine which college he wants to go to asap, and to go to the gym and get swoll!!!!!!! ;)
Amen bro! May you continue to be a light in the world.
DeleteBrother Philip, great advice!!! I'm delighted to hear how much you're learning :-)
DeleteLOL Phil! Thanks also for the good birthday advice that I shared with my son.

ReplyDeleteJohn 1: 15, "John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said,He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me." To the non-believer this verse shows God was Jesus and Jesus was God both were one. John could not make any clearer.
ReplyDeleteAs for Dave's Son first Happy Birthday, second don't be so quick to grow up and third don't text or talk on your cell phone when you drive.
Thanks for the good advice I shared with David today Mike. I then showed him a picture of a very mangled car near our home.
DeleteThrough him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. (John 1:3 NIV)
ReplyDeleteJust emailed Rick B. and told him how faithfully you've been a part of M3. We're so glad you are!
DeleteWhat stands out to me about the video is all the revision, of new testament doctrine. I don't know who said it but " the main things are the plain things and the plain things are the main things. With that said I think the labyrinth you have to walk through in order to obtain those conclusions are suspect to the conclusions themselves.
ReplyDeleteJohn: reading John it's understandable why the cult needed to create a new translation in order to maintain their doctrine.
What I would say to a Jehovah witness is that I believe with all my heart, mind, body and
ReplyDeletesoul that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that I am sorry they don't. I would then ask
If they could read John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the word and the word was with God,
He was in the beginning with God, and John 1:14 and the word became flesh and dwelt
among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of
grace and truth.
Amen John, you have the truth and you are ready to share it. Great words reflecting your deep conviction in the truth of the word of God.
DeleteYour deep belief in the truth makes you solid John.
DeleteJohn 1:1-2 says it clearly, Jesus is the light. I don't understand why the Catholic Church and others make their own rules in God's name. I'm curious how they justify those practices if they are not found in the Bible.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good question Chuy. When they elevate other sources of authority and make them equal to or more often greater then the Bible, it happens. Christians can actually do this also by picking and choosing what they will obey and what they will ignore to do from what the Bible teaches.
DeleteAgree with brother David, I pray that we ask & trust in the holy spirit to guide us,teach us, reveal to us the ways of the Lord.
DeleteGood talking with you earlier this evening Chuy and that your internet has been restored. Bueno! Bueno!
Delete1. " For the law was given through Moses,
ReplyDelete; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known." John 1:17-18
These verses say it all to me--God and Jesus are one in the same and there is no disputing this by cults or others who speak of the bible, as this is God's word breathed into life and truth.
Dave, thanks for the info for preparing us to be armed with the proper and only living Word of God!
2. Did it
Amen, you are right there is no disputing that Jesus and God are one. Stay strong in your walk with God and continue to be a blessing to many around you.
DeleteYou're welcome Jack. When they are shown such powerful verses, they are trained to turn to other ones. I guess the light is too bright.
Delete1.-Read the great introduction John pens to his gospel-John 1:1-18 and share one thing that strikes you from this passage and/or something that was covered today.
ReplyDeleteI’ll have to remember to tell the JWs "Jesus is Jehovah!”. I’m glad that we will all have the opportunity to meet Jesus someday, unlike the Jehovah's Witnesses where only 144,000 will get that chance. That's less than 2% of the 7.86 million Jehovah’s Witnesses.
The verse that stuck out to me was John 1: “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known”. It says right here that The Son (Jesus) is God not a god like others may believe.
Glad you know about that George. As I understand, all those 144,000 spots have already supposedly been taken a long time ago by early faithful JWs.
DeleteBrother George, less than 2%, not that I bet but I think I'd have better odds playing the lottery! lol :-D
DeleteJohn 1:4-5New International Version (NIV)
ReplyDelete4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.
1) Great to learn more about Jehovah Witnesses beliefs. When they come to my door I don't fight over the word of God with them but I do want to express my faith to them. I do like the fact they are open about their beliefs and stick to it. I feel I need to be open to my faith and stick to it. Not let my faith get weakened by the troubles that happen in my life. Great insight Brother Dave.
brother Vince, may speak you speak with boldness, confidence and clarity. Continue to sow seeds to others
DeleteKeep shining brightly Vince! And I do like Ismael's words as well.
DeleteBrother Vince, yes they're very well indoctrinated. That's why it's important for us as Christians to be submerged in His Word daily. Thanks for being unstoppable :-)
Delete1.-Read the great introduction John pens to his gospel-John 1:1-18 and share one thing that strikes you from this passage and/or something that was covered today.
ReplyDeleteThank you for video of JW's version of Jesus Christ, has given me knowledge of their view on Christ. Better equip me when JW's come knocking, yes I agree they have a tenacious demeanor. Jesus the alias Michael? Jesus materializing in many different body forms? To convince everyone of his resurrection. Good to know this, did not know how they felt about our Lord Savior. John1:5 "the light shines in the darkness, and darkness has not overcome it." This to me is the spiritual light Jesus has has brought into this dark world that evil has cast us into. Although Satan and his forces resist the light, they cannot overpower it's overpowering power. Jesus is life and light, those who accept Him are sons of light. Jn.12:35-36 Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light."
Keep walking in the light Armando. May the light of the truth in the Word of God purge what darkness remains in our minds and hearts that we may reflect Christ even more so.
DeleteGood words and good use of cross references Armando!
DeleteBrother Armando, I'm so glad that you've chosen to walk in the Light :-)
DeleteYou are right Armando we need to believe in the light which is Jesus Christ so we can
DeleteBeCome as light for those who need to see the light .
1) I like the challenge that Dave G. makes to JW's that come to his door.
ReplyDelete2) MP3 > Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— John 1:12
And may you continue to receive our Lord Jesus in his fullness of grace into your life my brother.
DeleteThanks Dave!
DeleteBrother Dave H, may the Lord grant opportunities to minister to the lost and broken. May He use you as an instrument of righteousness in His hands to be the salt & light to this world.
Delete1. Just so thankfull that I am not judged or living under law, the law that was given to Moses to uphold. For if I was, then I wad already condemned, thank you Lord for your saving grace upon my soul.John 1:17 NIV
ReplyDeleteFor the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
Did it
Brother Ismael, "Just so thankful that I am not judged or living under law". I was talking to my youngest son yesterday about how we could've been born at any other time or place in history. How thankful we should be to God for having been born in this country for such a time as this.
DeleteAdvise for your son: I would have probably liked to hear from my dad (keep in mind, a man a very very few words). Would be " I love you and know if you ever need anything, I'm here and available for you"!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ismael. I will pass on your words. We speak of our love for each other daily. That's something I didn't hear from my dad when growing up. Yet it's so enriching. It feels good to love!
Delete1. "Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ" I like how John was humble and even though he was sent by God he still gave all praise to Jesus.
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining me in being unstoppable Lucas! No Scripture, no sleep.
DeleteBrother Lucas, amen! In John's own words "He must become greater; I must become less.” John 3:30
Delete1. Wow, I found that video of the JW "Jesus" kind of creepy. I also really like the challenge that Pastor Dave gave to the JW's. Anyway, it is very sad that JW's are indoctrinated and controlled to the point where they can pretty much no longer think for themselves because of their idolatrous reliance on the Watchtower Society. This makes witnessing to them very difficult. Nevertheless, we should not grow weary of witnessing to them in love when we get the chance. I have read that they pay close attention to how we react when they come to our door (and if we lose our temper or slam the door, they will say to those they are training that this is how Christians really are like). As a result, it is important that we give Jesus Christ a good name by acting the way we should.
ReplyDeleteExcellent Alex!
DeleteBrother Alex, you're wise beyond your years!
DeleteFrom his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. (John 1:16 NLT)
ReplyDeleteThanks for being unstoppable Daniel- staying up to the wee hours of the morning, if that's what it takes. Love that verse!
DeleteBrother Daniel, I'm glad you're back :-)

ReplyDeleteI believe our discussion on the matters can quickly dive in to a debate of who or which one is right when we don’t focus on Jesus. Encounters with JW's are quite serious and yes as you had said they are Hard core members. Being well studied in the materials and books that are used is a very humbling thing to know that such a person is likely studying their "Bible" much more than a Christian would be studding the actually word. This being said encounters with my own brother were difficult to navigate and speak through without involving Jesus and keeping things simple.

I was moved by John 1:11-12
11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God
Brother Gary, I agree that if we're not careful it can snowball into a debate. What good is it to win the battle and lose the war?!
