We have been learning how to REAP from
God’s word. It starts by Reading it
to find out what it says. Then it involves Exploring
what it means. Now we come today to Applying
it. Without this step, we become spiritual fat heads like the Pharisees. They
knew a lot of Bible information, but because there was no application, it didn’t
result in transformation. They were huge hypocrites.
Oh that more people would study the Scriptures,
but without a pursuit of what they are ultimately about, it’s worse than tragic. Note Jesus’
powerful words, “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in
them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,
yet you refuse to come to me to have life." John 5:39-40. (O that we wouldn’t
just study the Scriptures, but we would also come to the One they reveal- Jesus, our life giver!)
Have you ever met someone who said the right God words, but
something just didn’t seem quite right? Jesus reveals the heart issue of many such people- “These
people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me” Mt.15:8. Jesus
also said, “Why do you call me, ‘Lord,
Lord,’ and do not do what I say? As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts
them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and
laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house
but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into
practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation.
The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was
complete.” Luke 6:46-49
So Application of the words of Jesus is essential. Those people heard the words of Jesus, but didn’t put them into practice. They were so fortunate that they heard Jesus speak to them, yet their end was terrible. Some people today go off the deep end trying to hear Jesus speak to them when he already has spoken to us in his word. I confess one time while out on a prayer walk, I prayed in anger to the Lord, “My dad speaks to me, why don’t you?” You know what the Lord then said? Nothing! The heavens were silent. I was like a person longing to hear a word from their radio, but they didn’t turn it on. If you long to hear God speak to you, open up his word. Then ask the following application questions to hear God SPEAK to you as you read and explore his word-
S- Is
there a Sin mentioned that I need to confess?
P- Is
there a Promise that applies to me that I should claim?
E- Is
there an Example to follow or an Error to avoid?
A- Is
there an Action I should take or an Answer to a question I’ve had?
K- Is
there Knowledge of my Lord for which I can praise him?
1.- Let’s ask God to
SPEAK to us as we Read, Explore and Apply 1 Corinthians 10:1-13. List one Scripture phrase from the passage
and share how it spoke to you in light of the SPEAK questions.
For example, if verse 14
was included, you might share the following- “Therefore my dear friends, flee
from idolatry.” 1 Cor.10:14. Paul gives me such a great example to follow as I
coach my new protégés. Though idolatry was such a terrible sin that people were
struck dead for, he still appealed to them as "dear friends." Help me to be firm (flee
it!), but ever so loving and patient with the sins they may be struggling with. Thank
you Lord for being so with me.
2. Record the verse you
picked out on your 3x5 and review it today. When you did it, write “Did it.”
It's the weekend!
Sundays we will focus on the passage that Pastor Mark is preaching from. Since I know some of you wanted to post the verse or phrase that you got from the message, I will open the blog up for any of you who want to post such, but this is not required. I do want to ask all of us to visit the blog on Sundays though to post your appreciation to certain of your teammates starting in a few weeks. You'll discover what I'm talking about in a moment.
Saturday's are a day of rest from the blog. But it may be the perfect day for you to pursue your personal topics of interest- your GDPs- Growing Deeper Projects.
A week ago I asked you what you would like to learn more about. I got great responses from you. I also promised each of you that you would learn about that. So how do you plan to accomplish all that Dave? Well, my plan is to help you to learn about your own topics of interest. No sense waiting for me to finally cover what you want to learn. So here's how this works. Take the topic you're interested in and begin exploring it via the Bible or articles you can find online. If you need help, just contact me. I'll make sure you succeed. When you're done, email me your findings. Keep it short and sweet- a page or two will do. We'll review it together and then I'll post it on our Sunday blog to enrich the entire team. Not only will you be learning and blessing all of us, you will be then experienced to help your proteges go and do likewise. We will never learn enough in our Coaches Training to answer all the questions that our proteges may hit us with. So let's be well prepared to help them discover the answers for themselves. We don't want to have to spoon feed them. We want them to learn how to feed themselves. We will post a few GDPs (Growing Deeper Projects) per week, starting in two or three weeks. Some may want to tackle a project that will involve a series of articles. Great! So take your topic and begin digging into it. Again, contact me for any help you may need.
Aw, but Dave I never was a good writer!
Here's a few helpful tips. "There is no such thing as good writing, only good re-writing." This was said by my Bible college English prof- Ed Chesley.) So re-read or even read out loud what you write before you send it to me. Also, always use Spell-Check. Remember, shorter sentences are better than long, run on sentences. (All of the above tips are also good to follow for your Daily Blog Responses too.) Clarify big words. And feel free to quote freely from other sources, just give credit where credit is due. One young man I was mentoring in the past wrote something that sounded well beyond his abilities. I did a quick Google search and found he had swiped the paragraph from Dr. John MacArthur and presented the profound words as his own. He was rather embarrassed when I gently pointed this out to him. (As a coach, you will at times have to "correct with great patience and careful instruction" 2 Tim.4:2. If they humbly want to grow, they won't argue with you.)
Okay, now I need volunteers. If you don't mind leading the way in sending me your GDP in 2 weeks (Fri.12.26), that would be great. Thank you- juslemeknowsoon. (I meant to do that.) If you are hesitant, that's okay. We can put you later on the list so you can see how others do such and have more time to prepare. Relax, it will end up fine. Your teammates will benefit from your work and I'm sure you'll get posts of appreciation. We are all for One and one for all.
yours to help you flourish,
dave

1.- I Cor. 10:13 ..... But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great promise that God gives us that when we face temptations He will provide an escape route. We do not have to try to face temptations on our own but rather claim and believe His promises from His Word and that way we will be able to endure it.
Thank you Lord that through you I can experience victory over temptations because on my own I always fail you. Thank you.
2.- Did it
Roger, I said out loud, "Wow, this is excellent!" You found a great promise, described it succinctly, and then closed with a personal word of thanks in light of an admission that we all can relate to. Very good! And thanks for leading the way this morning.
DeleteI also chose 1 Cor. 10:13 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
ReplyDeleteS- Is there a Sin mentioned that I need to confess? I pray that when I sin, I get convicted and repent of it.
P- Is there a Promise that applies to me that I should claim? I thank You Lord for being there during my temptations.
E- Is there an Example to follow or an Error to avoid? I pray that God gives me the perseverance to endure temptation.
A- Is there an Action I should take or an Answer to a question I’ve had? I thank you Lord that You are the answer to everything in my life.
K- Is there Knowledge of my Lord for which I can praise him? I thank you for Your forgiveness when I do sin.
Did it.
Alright Sam! You found not just one application, but several from that one verse. God is SPEAKing to you!
Delete1 Corin. 10: 12 - " Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall."
ReplyDeleteFrom the proceeding verses we see examples of things that happened to them (the Israelites) as an instruction for us to avoid. Therefore, Paul goes on to write verse 12 saying, that if we think we can stand strong against these things we should think again. We need to take heed, or listen up to the instruction that is being given, so that we don't fall into place, or make the same mistakes. Verse 12 spurs an action that I need to take...heed the Word of My Father's Instruction, even when my way looks so much better. It will help me to avoid the errors and sins that were mentioned in verses 1-10, and is coupled with a promise that God will give us the strength and an exit strategy to overcome temptation if we heed and turn to Him. Which that is something in which we can praise Him for.
Did it!
Have a Blessed Day Brothers. Peace and Grace!
Also, I will volunteer to share my findings for December 26 deadline.
Very good Eddie! Also great warning and reminder verse for your 3x5.
DeleteThanks for being the first to volunteer for the GDP. I know you'll do a great job!
Posted 1 Corinthians 10:7 Did it
ReplyDelete" Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: " The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.""
This phrase spoke to me: The Sin is idolatry which was common throughout the bible and today it is prevalent with most people as they have false idols--movie, sports, and music stars. Commandment 1 --there is only 1 God. Trust in God as his promise is he is always faithful!
The example is learn from our ancestors mistakes!
Action is Love God with all your heart and soul and trust in him alone--lean on Jesus, as we cannot make it on our own.
Praise God always in all circumstances, and lead protégés to understand.
I pray that that we multiply men, women and children to understand and follow God's word always--
Excellent Jack! You got more than one from that one verse.
DeleteS I must not grumble\complain v 10 (As this section speaks of the isralites) I must not look back to the Egypt I came from.
ReplyDeleteP The promise is that by heeding the commands by God; there will not be a temptation that we can flee from or that will be guarded against
E Our living example is the word and the people that is speaks of who came before us who fell or stumbled in their path
A Our action is our commitment to Gods commands such as fleeing sexual immorality v 8; or having a humble stance as opposed to boasting in one's self v 12
K Thank you and praise be to you Lord God that you still provide a way away from our own nature to disobey and even while we are tempted you keep us from that temptation.
Did it Verse 12
"Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall." Let us not get overconfident in our journey and walk with Christ and be reliant on Him from day to day
Wow Gary, you went beyond the call of duty and found applications for each of the letters, not just one. Alright!
Delete1) A key phrase that spoke to me was 1 Cor. 10:6 “ Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did." I need to keep my heart set on always looking to Christ. If I let my heart drift off of Christ, then my heart can set it self on the evil things listed in verses 7-10. Paul lists 4 of categories of evil things that my heart can become set on:
ReplyDeleteIdolatry - valuing the created things more then the Creator
Sexual immorality - controlled by the impulses of my body rather then the spirit.
Testing the Lord - trying to manipulate God to do what I want
Grumbling - being discontent and ignoring God's blessings
God dealt very harshly with the Israelites that set their heart on these evil things after being delivered from slavery in Egypt. It resulted in death.
How very merciful and patient God is with me. One action I am taking each day is feeding on God's Word to help keep my heart set on Him.
2) Did It.
Outstanding Dave!
Delete1) 1 Corinthians 10:12. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!
ReplyDeleteAction to be taken is to not get on a high horse about praying and reading the bible every day, as I need to avoid a false sense of continuity and growth and get deeper into the word. The M3 accountability certainly helps!
2) Did it
3) Volunteer to share findings on self-forgiveness
Excellent Daniel! Let's talk about the project when you get back from vacation. I'm sure the weather and island is beautiful :)
Delete1 Corinthians 10:13, No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. This verse along with many of other verses shows me how much love God has for us. He also wants us to lean on Him when we come to temptations.
ReplyDeleteDid it.
Yes Mike! Hope you enjoyed seeing the way God can SPEAK to us using those helpful SPEAK questions. Best of blessings!
Delete1. 1 Cor. 10:11 says "Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come."
ReplyDelete- Using some of the S.P.E.A.K questions:
S- Is there a Sin mentioned that I need to confess? the previous verses mention 4 major Sins to Avoid,- Idolatry, Sexual Immorality, Testing the Lord or trying to manipulate God, and Grumbling/Complaining
P- Is there a Promise that applies to me that I should claim? Yes, the Word cautions me to remember the lessons that the Jews/Israelites learned about God (the hard way) so that I can avoid their mistakes :) That is wise :)
E- Is there an Example to follow or an Error to avoid? Yes, Errors to avoid are Idolatry, Sexual Immorality, Testing the Lord, and Grumbling/Complaining as much as I can. Help me God avoid these great sins.
A- Is there an Action I should take or an Answer to a question I’ve had? I believe the key to remembering God's ways and His words is to study the Bible regularly (daily) and to be a doer of His word and not just a hearer! God's word teaches me how He wants me to live, so that I can avoid the mistakes and devastating consequences of other's past sins!
K- Is there Knowledge of my Lord for which I can praise him? Yes, God just reminded me that it is so easy to ignore or forget the lessons of the past, but Please do not do that! Oh Lord, help me to fully understand that my actions can bring about great blessings or devastating lifelong consequences. Please help me Lord live to seek Your divine wisdom and great understanding of Your Word and Your ways, Amen :)

Excellent Israel! You are a night owl! Glad you are unstoppable!
Delete1 Corinthians 10:6-7 NIV
ReplyDeleteNow these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”
1.HIt's me as an example as to what the Israelites did but in modern day what we do. That is for every decision that I make that is not honoring God, there will be a costly consequence.
2. Did it.
Very good Ismael! I'm so impressed that no matter how late, you still would read and share on the the blog. You are unstoppable! You've got what it takes. Way to go!
ReplyDeleteNow these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. (1 Corinthians 10:6 NIV)
ReplyDeleteThis spoke to me in many ways: the saints ol' are in some ways to us our older siblings that made all the mistakes and we now get to glean from their experiences and apply it to obey God even more so nowadays. We definitely do our own fair share of sinning but it keeps me knowing that the bible is an example that we need constant direction from. Also nothing is new under the sun and therefore we must acknowledge that our ancestors made mistakes yes but we can honor them and their legacy but not repeating where they failed and honoringGod with pacing our hearts on things above and not on earthly things
Very good John! I like the thought of them being like our older brothers who made the mistakes first so we could learn from them. I had an older brother that did that for me :)
ReplyDelete1. V. 10: "And do not grumble, as some of them did--and were killed by the destroying angel."
ReplyDelete2. I'm a grumbler too! As I think about verse 10, the first thing that comes to my mind is...hmm death for grumbling...seems a little harsh. Particularly, when compared with idolatry and sexual immorality. However, I realize that when I grumble I'm actually giving voice to unbelief, disobedience, and second-guessing God's All-Knowing, All-Wise, omnipotence and substituting it with my own lack of knowledge, unwise, powerlessness. That's "fleshy" thinking at its finest. It reminds me of God's lament in 1 Samuel 8, were God instructs Samuel to give the people a human king for they have rejected His Kingship. Who do we (I mean me) think we (that's me again) are?
