The
Lord’s prayer is giving us a major overhaul to the typical shallow,
self-centered prayer life that many believers have. We are learning that prayer
is God focused. So don’t focus on how many prayers you’ve seen answered. Many
people give up on prayer because they approach it like a vending machine. If it
doesn’t give them what they want, they don’t go to it anymore. But prayer is
first and foremost a relationship with our Father. It’s about loving and appreciating
him and becoming more like him. Thus, the Lord’s prayer teaches us to start off
with praise to God who is now our devoted Father, and praise that his name is
so holy and wonderful. Then we saw that after Praise comes desiring his desires- his Priorities- “Thy kingdom come.”
Today we
want to look at the next prayer Priority- “Thy will be done on earth as it is
in heaven.” We are especially praying,
“Thy will be done in my life.” But what is the will of God for my life? That’s
a huge subject. Fortunately, discovering the will of God for your life is already
revealed in the word of God. Apart from that, God gives us great freedom to choose such things as where we want
to live and work and even what to eat. Note this freeing, permissive will of
God even in the garden of Eden- “You are free to eat from any tree in the
garden…” It is only in matters of sin- that which would terribly harm us- that our Father speaks out of his loving, protective will- “but you must not eat from the
tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely
die.” Gen.2:17. This protective will is better known as his prescriptive will.
Just as a doctor prescribes medicine for our well-being, so does our great
physician and Father.
Insanely,
our selfish, sinful nature totally opposes God’s will. But as believers we now know
that God’s will for us is good, pleasing and perfect. That doesn’t mean that
doing the will of God will always be easy, for our mission involves a terrible
battle against the enemy to set captives free. In another garden, the last Adam
struggled greatly not to pursue his own will, but the will of his Father-
“Abba, Father…take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
Mark 14:36. To carry out the will of God includes prayer. And so Jesus prayed.
And then he exhorted his sleepy disciples to pray- “watch and pray so that you
will not fall into temptation...” Mark 14:38. (Thus, we must help our protégés
to develop a daily life of prayer, since temptations lure us daily.) God’s will
is not that we fall into temptation and sin. Instead, God’s word declares, “It
is God’s will that you should be sanctified” (holy, morally pure) 1 Th.4:3.
Once again, we see that the will of God is revealed in the word of God. So to
help ourselves and our protégés be transformed and carry out the will of God,
what is essential?
1.-Read
Rom.12:1-2. There we see that God’s will is that we not be conformed but
transformed. We are not to be conformed to this fallen world’s values and
thinking that excludes God’s will. Instead, we are to be transformed by the
renewing of our minds. This renewing or overhauling is like overhauling an old,
defective engine. The corroded parts are replaced by new parts according to the
manufacturer’s specs. As we spend time in God’s word, the manufacturer’s specs,
we discover that his will is good, pleasing and perfect. This creates a desire
to do his will, which we gain from his word.
2.Read Psalm
40:6-8 which underscores this. (It is actually a prophecy of Jesus as confirmed
in Heb.10:5-10. These are called Messianic psalms or portions.) Copy down verse
8 on your 3x5 (Do the “Did it” thing), then review it, and pray it into your
heart. Pray this for yourself and the brother you encourage who posts above you today.
3. Write down one thought from any of the verses or points we've covered today regarding the will of God.
Speaking of prayer, REAP ends with Prayer (Read, Explore, Apply, Pray),
so let’s do that now. Pray through at least the first portion of the Lord’s
prayer that we have covered-Praise him that he is our Father and praise him
for some the 900 names that he is known by. Also pray over God’s priorities- for His kingdom (Pray for the coach quality men you want to recruit to M3 to help us forcefully
advance God’s kingdom. Thanks to those of you who have already called me regarding such. And pray for the couple prayer warriors you want to recruit.) And pray for His will to be done-that we and our
future protégés would desire to do God’s will through treasuring his word in our
hearts. I love your love for the word that I'm seeing!

Announcements/Reminders
I'm excited to announce that Sunday, the 28th, we will be spotlighting on our blog, the first of our weekly Growing Deeper Projects (GDPs). You'll be strengthened and you can leave an encouraging note. I've seen the topics. It's going to be good!
Sunday, Jan.11th- We will be having our first M3 meeting at the beautiful home of Jack and Janie Rogers- 10749 Cherrywood Dr. Palos Park. Each of you has proven to be unstoppable in your daily reading and sharing on our blog. This may seem like a small thing, but it is foundational to our personal growth and to our unity and success as a team to accomplish our multiplying mission. Thus, to each person that continues to meet daily on the blog and passes the basic review test, you will be presented with an "Unstoppable Award." So mark your calendar and be unstoppable for that crucial meeting. (By the way, you will pass the basic review test, no matter how many times you have to take it. It's basic- no cramming or all nighters necessary. The goal of a good teacher is seeing his students succeed. You will:)
Also, you are invited to come earlier that same day (Sunday, Jan,11th) at 1:00pm to Jack and Janie's for lunch and the first in a series of Bible discussions on the DVD series, "The Bible." I'm looking forward to this as well. Those not part of M3 will clear out by 2:45 so we can start our meeting promptly at 3:00. It's a bit of a drive, so by all means leave early enough to be early. Please RSVP to Jack if you and yours are planning on coming to this 1:00 lunch and discussion time. Jack's #417-425-5739. Your loved ones are welcome to stay upstairs during our M3 meeting from 3:00 to 4:15. Knowing Jack and Janie, there would be a good video for the kids to watch and good fellowship for the women.

ReplyDelete2.- Rom 12:1-2 In our modern day society where sin is viewed as acceptable because of political correctness it is easy for us to slowly allow things that God forbids to become more acceptable. It is here where these verses in Romans tells us what we as christians need to be doing, we are not to be conformed but rather transformed more and more every day in order to become more like Him.
Lord I pray that as your followers we would find great pleasure in seeking your Word and allowing it to transform us through the work of your Holy Spirit. Blessing to everyone today!
I say Amen and Amen to that Roger. I too try to muscle my way through at times to defeat Satans attacks, but I'll fail every time if I don't use the power God has already given us
DeleteVery good Roger! When we will to do God's word, the work of God is done in us by the Spirit of God.

ReplyDeleteI love when the Psalms reminds me of a song or worship song. For me it helps to sing something when I want to remember it, guess that's how my brain works. Here is a song based on Psalms 40
http://youtu.be/e-mYBM_-bqA
I am always blessed by Romans 12. I think at times we fail to see that by dying to self and saying "Lord, I want to sin right now but with your strength I will choose not to..." Is not only an act of obedience to God but also an act of worship. Presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice and giving Gid a sacrifice of praise. I got caught up a lot with the "am I in Gods will right now?" question and I half to simplify things and just know that presenting my body to God IS being in His will. I like the thought being IN his will rather trying to FIND his will for my life. One more thought and then sit down lol:
Romans speaks of presenting your body out of love for God not because we want to feel like we didn't sin that day but because it's also an expression of our love to God in the same way I cleaned up my act once Vanessa had my heart lol :)
Hope that made sense
Yes, it makes sense John. Thanks for the video. Got me wondering if anyone put Psalm 40:8 to music. Thought you might enjoy this Jewish flavor of such- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xKxZemEpvg
DeleteIt makes sense John. Good work. I like that illustration. That's how you learn by singing and music, some with pictures and words...I remember you telling me about that article you were reading about the 7 ways people learn. Praying for you today bro.
DeleteGreat song John!
Delete1. Read Rom. 12:1-2. Love that portion of scripture. Living light of his mercy and grace, let us offer our living as living sacrifices. That is my prayer for us all.
ReplyDelete2. Wrote down Psalms 40:8. Did it
3. Psalms 143:10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground!
What humbleness the author of this Psalms has. I can visualize this as a child asking their parent, specially their father how do to something. Dad can you teach me how to _______? Can you lead me in______? Dad show me how to do this ______?
Seems like the Psalmist has the same tone here.
I love what one commentary said about this passage of scripture.
Teach me to do your will. We may call this sentence a description of David's school; and it is a very complete one; at least, it has the three best things that belong to a school.
The best teacher.
The best scholar.
The best lesson;
For who so good a teacher as God? Who so good a scholar as David? What so good a lesson as to do God's will? --Sir Richard Baker.
Be blessed Brothers!
Thanks Eddie for even digging into commentaries on that verse. Your GDP is going to be good.
DeleteFrom what I read on this post as well as the verses, it showed me what God expects from us. I always known what God wants and expects from us but once in while we have to be reminded to stop the business of life and stand still and be in communion with our Lord. At lease that's how I feel from time to time. As for sin there is no one on earth who is sinless but we can strive to sin less. God knows our hearts and we cannot hide from Him. We might think we can but He is everywhere. I once seen a picture showing two sets of foot prints in the sand than one set of foot prints. The caption stated when you think you are alone, your not God is carrying you. When I am down and out I remember that caption.
ReplyDeleteDid it.
My prayer for everyone is to stay the course and keep your eyes on God. We are blessed in so many ways but sometimes we take Him and the blessings for granted. God is good all the time.
Mike I enjoyed your scenario with caption, as God wants our hearts and minds when we are alone and that is our truth.
DeleteI pray that you are always following Jesus and praying for his will as we live by his commands
Yes Mike, it's good to know what God desires for us. We could never know that good will of his apart from his word. So glad we can share with each other from it.

3. Romans 12:1-2 Be transformed by the renewing of our minds. We must strongly counsel protégés to love God in their minds, and be transformed by its renewal and be strong in their faith always. Prepare yourself to answer tough questions with thoughtful answers. Be focused on God constantly throughout the day and read the word daily to understand his will. Write down versus that are dear to your heart and pray on them throughout the day.
My Phone # is (417)459-8342 to confirm attendance on January 11
Hi Jack. Thank you for opening up your home to the rest of us M3'ers. I'm hoping to bring my wife and will confirm with you soon. Congratulations on faithfully completing week 3. I praise God for you now and for what you are becoming.
DeleteGood Jack! I much look forward to our Jan.11th meetings there. I know it's going to be a great time.

ReplyDeleteRomans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind...” This verse reminds me of a pool game we played as kids that we called “whirlpool”. All of us kids would go round and round on the inside the pool in the same direction to create a whirlpool. We would keep going until we made the whirlpool as strong as we could. Then at someone's command, we would instantly all turn around and try to go in the opposite direction. It was fun to be swept off our feet and to be forcefully carried away by the whirlpool. That picture of a whirlpool is somewhat like our minds being caught up in the whirlpool of the world and the pattern of it's thinking. At first we raced along with the thinking of the world until one day we encountered the Truth. Then the transformation had begun as we turned in the opposite direction of the world's thinking. At first we easily got pushed back several times sometimes even falling back into the world's ways. But by the continual renewing of our minds, through the power of the word of truth we are making forward progress against constant opposition with a mission to reach out to help turn other minds in the direction of the Truth. . Verse 2 continues to state that its only after our minds are renewed that then we will be able to test and approve what the perfect will of God is.
Love the sharing about the continual renewing of our minds and making progress despite the opposition due to the momentum of what the old me had created... That blessed me today.
DeleteHey, we played that game too! Good illustration Dave.
Delete1) Read Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
ReplyDelete2) Put Psalms 40:8 in my phone
3) Romans 12:1-2 I thank you God for your mercy, I thank you for taking my body in the right direction and showing me that it is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit), I plead that You continue to renew my mind. I pray that your will reigns over us.
God bless you Jack. I pray that you continue to be a man after God's heart.
Very good Sam. It's nice to use Color Note on my phone as well as my 3x5s to review my verse of the day.
DeleteThis is a very memorable verse and the cross-reference I see in the word is Ephesians 4:24 "and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness." In the transformation for all of us we show the interworking of our relationship with God. It's that He is always maturing the believer.
ReplyDeleteI wrote Psalm 40:8 on my card
As I read the psalm I was looking for the context and found another recognition of God's majesty in verse 5 "were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too man to declare."
Indeed Gary, not enough time in the day to share about the bottomless well that is His grace!
DeleteI praise God for you that you are on this journey with us as men, and that you are taking to heart Psalm 40:8 in taking joy in doing His will and keeping His instructions written on my heart.
Looking forward to meeting you on the 11th!
Way to look for cross references Gary. They can add additional light as you know.

3. I will share that I started the year participating in the corporate church fast (for the first time ever) and was fasting for:
a) my wife's complete healing from the harm caused by my old way of being (my old ways being the whirlpool current that Dave H references above and which I'm facing now that I've turned towards God and His ways, versus my ways)
b) wisdom to raise my boys
and relevant to today's blog about God's will...
c) that He would reveal His purpose for my life.
I end the year with praise in my heart for he has been answering these prayers in so many beautiful ways, and I thank God for the M3 brotherhood and the study today about seeking His will, which has blessed me and is a wonderful end cap to this year of restoration as I seek His will above mine.
So looking forward to the 11th. Let's sing a song of worship together on that day, as the theme of music and songs of praise has me eager to join my brothers in worshipping together!
What a testimony Daniel, I thank God for your humble heart to Love Him and to serve Him. I love this group of godly Manly Men because we are all ready to fight for our wives, sons, daughters, and families. Please do me a favor and read my post from yesterday, specifically #2, as this addresses your fight for your family :) I hope it encourages you :)
DeleteGod is greatly at work in your life Daniel! He who began a good work in you will be faithful to carry it on to completion until the day of Christ. Phil.1:6
DeleteThanks Dave. What a great spiritual boost Phil 1:6 is.

As I read through Romans 12: 1-2 "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."
--- I could NOT help, but to reflect on my own behavior and most importantly, my heart! What I discovered was this, at least in my own life as a Christian, was that ' Way too many times, I have been caught up on eliminating certain behaviors and habits and Mexican customs/traditions, even though that is Wise! I missed the "Be transformed by the Renewing of your mind" segment, because my heart was missing the Love for God and the relationship with God. I started eliminating bad behaviors with a "Don't do this, and Do this" type of mindset, and I became very religious, and kind of became like a Pharisee, who follows the Strict Law, but misses the relationship with God. I have learned that it is possible to avoid most wordly customs and behaviors and still be full of pride, selfish, stubborn, and very sinful in my attitude. Only the Holy Spirit and God's Word can renew our hearts and minds to fall in love with Him so much, that we want to eliminate anything that hinders our walk with Him :) God has been helping me so much here! :)
Wow Israel, thanks for sharing so honestly where you were at before. I hope all the men will read this. Excellent! It''s not just the "putting off" but the "putting on." And putting on love is the greatest Col.3:14
DeleteMmm Israel, I agree to all what you said. I pray that you become like "David" a man after God own heart. To be transparent to Him, to desire just being around God and come to him like little children "vulnerable and open hearted". May the Lord Almighty transform you by renewing of your mind and heart daily.

Ya did it Ismael- even if it took being up until 2AM! I like that you turned the verse into prayer reading. Very good. That makes the passage so personal.

3. "be ye transformed..." The implication here it that our natural state (even after making a commitment to the Lord) needs to change as it works really hard to go against God's will. We need to be transformation implies that the current state is radically different than the previous state. This is something that I think about daily.
Good thing to think about daily! Yes!
