Fri.12.5.14...How to Prevent the Word from being Dead in your Head

Have you ever felt like you were just reading, but not really relating to the Lord?
I sure have. But several years ago I found a great way to prevent the intake of God’s word from just being dead in my head. It’s prayer reading. It’s so simple. Hopefully, you’ve already enjoyed doing such. This will be a great practice to pass on to your protégés and also share with loved ones. Let’s take a short passage to illustrate prayer reading- Proverbs 2:1-6. Here’s how it reads from the NIV-

My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—
indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Now here’s how one might personalize it and turn it into prayer reading-
Heavenly Father, I thank you that I am your son whom you want to mentor. What a privilege! I am your son whom you love. Your word reveals your best way for me.
So I will accept your words; O may I never reject them.
I will store up your commands within my heart. I’m doing that with my 3x5 cards with my brothers. This has been such a blessing.
I will turn my ear to wisdom. Jesus, in you are all the treasures of wisdom.
I will apply my heart to understanding. And I also ask your help to do so.
Yes, I call out to you for insight and understanding. For I need your help. Sure, I can learn a lot of facts through prayerless study. But to make your truths live in my life requires you. Please forgive the many times I’ve settled more for content than communion.
Help me to look, not only for understanding, but for you. For Lord, you are more precious than silver. I will search for you and your ways in your word as for hidden treasure. Jesus you are the treasure hidden throughout the Older Testament and you are in open view in the New.
Thank you Lord for your promise that my searching will not be in vain. I will find you and understand the fear of the Lord.
Yet Lord, I admit that I still feel like a pilgrim on the far edges of your court. I see you, but only from a distance. But thank you Lord, one day it will be face to face.

So prayer reading involves-personalizing the pronouns, praying it back to God, admitting when we fall short of the standard, asking for his forgiveness and help, seeking Christ as the hidden treasure, claiming his promises and praising him.

1. Now it’s your turn to prayer read. Read anywhere within the first 9 chapters of Proverbs and take only one, two or a few verses and write and post your personalized prayer. No one is grading you. You’ll do fine. Try it, you’ll like it!

2. Pick one of the verses you especially liked or even a phrase from it and write it on your 3x5 card (or your smart phone version of such Sam:). Just write "Did It" when you did it. Then seek to review it throughout the day, reflecting on it and praying to God regarding it. This is the way we can commune with God in his word day and night as we saw in Josh.1:8.

3. Respond to the question at the very end of this blog. Thanx!

Congratulations on a perfect game Wednesday! Everyone commented on the blog that day. Way to go! I am so pleased. This is the fellowship of the flaming heart that I've always longed for. As you know, Monday and Tuesday were practice days. Then you were simply listed alphabetically. Now you are on one of two teams- Alpha Force vs. Delta Force.  Within each Force you will note that they include 2 Fire Teams. (Yes, you can pick new names:) You will also note that Alpha Force and Delta Force are tied at 18 out of 18. What does that mean? Remember, you all were given credit for Monday and Tuesday practice games. Then Wednesday everyone participated. So that's 3 days x 6 men on each Force = 18. Thus, 18 out of 18 possible points. Way to go! So keep up the good work. Your teammates are counting on you :) There's an old adage we're trying to incorporate here- "Keep it simple; make it fun!" So let's have fun. Speaking of which, you can be looking forward to a fun get together in about a month. We'll make the announcement regarding it soon.

Congratulations on a great first week of Officers/Coaches Training. We've begun by focusing on the vital priority that we and our proteges need to cultivate- communion with God through his word. We will introduce a second vital priority connected to it this coming week, Monday through Friday.

So what about the weekends? Sundays you can certainly read anywhere you wish. But we will bless Pastor Mark by making his passage our M3 passage that day. Bring your Bible and pick out a verse or phrase that grabs you and add it to your 3x5 card. Want to earn brownie points with Pastor Mark? Show him your 3x5 card after the service.

But what about Saturdays? We designed Saturdays to be a day for you to pursue your own personal interests in God's word. Also you will get credit for the fruit of your discoveries. You'll actually have an entire week to complete these enjoyable GDPs (Growing Deeper Projects). We'll help you every step of the way. You will succeed. So for now, what would be one subject in scripture you would like to learn more about? (Include this in your blog comments. Thanks.)

    1. Let me tell you a quick story. I was called one day years ago by a mother of a good old friend from high school. She noticed that my marriage was doing good and she wanted advice and for me to reach out to her. I told her that God was working in my life and I suggested that I can invite her to church. Keep in mind that I had had seen my friend in years and that her mom was raised Catholic and somehow not open to anything else. I tried to invite my friend to church without success. My intentions were good, but my approach was not. The first thing that I should have done was to invite her and her family (kids and all) to my house or something along the lines of that. Lesson learned. Hope this helps.

  5. Proverbs 4:20-22
Oh Lord God I thank you for every opportunity to communicate with you and spend time in your word and constantly engage in the things that are truthfully important to yourself; continue to reveal to me what is actually important.
Lord God teach me to be attentive to your work an your sayings and your life. Teach me these things that my ears can be trained and my changed heart can hear what all it is you are saying to me.
God I ask you, that these things you teach me in your word, you may not remove them from my sight and ability and equip me in just the way we are training now, to contain the things of your will within me.
And Lord magnify what you are telling me so that I can find the living breathing words of scripture that not only breath life to myself but to the live of my brothers

    I wrote it; Prov 1:32
"For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them;"

In the sheer context of chapter one of proverbs there is a warning conveyed by God; and the fact that the individual who ignores God not only disregards wisdom but also is holding his or herself to their own destruction. This is a very real humbling statement.

Finally Thank you for your guidance and mentorship. I too would like to learn more on approaching other individuals

  6. 1) Proverbs 3:5-6
Lord you tell me to trust and rely on you completely with all my heart. No one can be as reliable and as dependable and so right as you truly are. Yet you know there are times when I just stop and don't do what you ask me to do. Sometimes its because of fears and concerns that surge up within me. Help me to cast aside my own misconceptions and lies and to lay down my wrong and incomplete understanding of things. I want to cling only to your truths and ways so that I may keep moving forward down the paths you choose to lead me.

    2) Proverbs 3:5-6 Written down. Will keep going over verses tomorrow.

  8. Dear Heavenly Father help me listen wisely and add to my learning and let the discerning get guidance(1-5). Please help me guard the course you made just and protect the way of the faithful ones(2-8). Help me trust in you Lord with all my heart and lean not on your understanding(3-5). Help me keep my feet from evil. Don't let me turn right or left keep me on a straight path(4-27). For my ways are in full view of you Lord and I know you examine all my paths(5-21). To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech(8-13). Please Lord give me wisdom so I will be rewarded by you by adding years to my life so I can serve you(9-11).

    Did it.

I would like to have more subjects on perseverance.

  9. Proverbs 3: 5-6
Lord, give me the strength to trust in you with all my heart. I know there is an everyday battle to use worldly judgement or my own common sense. But who am I that I should lean on my own understanding, my own limited knowledge. Help me to humble myself before you and ground myself in your word, so that you I will be filled with your word, your perfect word. And as I ground myself in your holy truths I can take confidence in you as you make my paths straight as I follow you faithfully.

Proverbs 8:17. Memory verse. Did it.

I would like to explore how to keep our hearts spiritually healthy. I recently was at the doctor doing a stress test and the doctor said your heart looks good and healthy. The thing is as we grow older we need to work on keeping it that way. When he said that I immediately thought of the spiritual implications of keeping a clean heart.

  10. Very good Eddie. I read your prayer as my own.
Being spiritually heart healthy is so vital and that's what we're beginning to do even with this first week. Let me know more specifically if we don't scratch that itch.

  12. 1. Psalms 4:5-7: Father, please give me the drive to get godly Wisdom at any cost and be able to see things and life through Your perspective. Open my spiritual eyes and unclog my spiritual ears, help me to get understanding. Holy Spirit, help me to never forget Your precious word or swerve from it. I decide right now and I choose to chase wisdom with all my being, help me never to abandon my pursuit of wisdom no matter how tough the road may be. Your word says that Wisdom is supreme, therefore, get wisdom! God, please give me a double portion of wisdom, help me to implement Your word in my life and help me to advise others with the most godly wisdom that is possible, never deviating from Your word. God, please give me spiritual understanding and help me to be sensitive to your leading, your divine insight, and ultimately, help me to see things through Your eyes with Your heart! God, I know that this is impossible on my own, so please Holy Spirit, help me wonderful Counselor :) I ask this in Jesus Name, Amen. -- Wow, this was a great exercise. I never did that before. I will implement that into my prayer life :)

  15. 1. Proverbs 3:3-4 NIV

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.

Heavenly Father, you are Love because you first loved us, you showed & expressed your faithfulness and love through the Israelites. When every time they turned their back on you, you kept giving your steadfast love to them. Father I also ask that I keep that same relentless love back to you but also to show compassion for people even when it's hard to. Let me keep them around my neck so that I may remember always, keep your word/voice closely to my heart so that you may tuck on it whenever I may go astray. And so in the end of times Father may I be a delight to your nostrils. In Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.

3.For me would be "Submitting", whether it be to spouse, parents, friends, authority like my job. It's hard cause most of times "pride" wants to come out roaring through my flesh.

  16. Very good prayer reading Ismael!
Regarding the roaring of pride when you should submit- so I'm not the only one that faces that challenge? :)

  17. Thank you Davd G for leading and encouraging us through this first week of M3 training.
One subject in scripture I would like to learn more about is PRAYER especially how to keep a good daily balance at it. There are so many modes of praying. Today in 1 Samuel 12, I read Samuel's response to the rebellious Israelites in verse 23 where he said: “ As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right. “ I can see that I need to grasp more then just the urgency of praying for others.
