The last couple days, we’ve begun to learn how to better connect with our Lord, for if we aren’t abiding in Him, we wither and won’t have what is essential to pass on to our proteges and others. Monday we began with prayer as we approached God and his word. Then yesterday, we started to look at how we can REAP from God’s word. R= Reading God’s word, for this is the essential way that God communicates to us so that we might commune with him. (It is a frustrating error to expect God to speak apart from his word.) Today we want to Explore what we read like a treasure seeker. We are to "search for it as for hidden treasure" Prov.2:4. May each of us and our proteges have a longing, "a Jones" (a craving) for exploring and discovering such treasures in God's word.
This is what the E of REAP stands for- Explore. As we explore the treasures of what we read, we are seeking to understand what the author meant. We could go really deep here and delve into using commentaries and concordances, (and we will down the road), but right now I want us to focus on a simple way to explore the treasure rooms of God’s word. It starts by asking questions to understand what we are reading. Notice this is what Phillip did when he was directed to evangelize the Ethiopian eunuch- The official “on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.” Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.”Acts 8:28-31. He was a Bible explorer. The official was reading from Isaiah 53. Some have called it the John 3:16 of the Old Testament. (Wouldn’t you love to meet men reading the gospel of John who ask you to explain it to them? O Lord, give us such treasure seekers to evangelize and mentor!)
1.-Let’s Explore what this incredible passage has to say. It actually runs from Is.52:13 through the end of ch.53. To understand any passage, first seek to summarize it. Read it through and then summarize it in just one short sentence. Read it over a few times if need be. I usually do. Sure, your sentence won’t capture every detail, but it should help someone else know generally what the passage is about. So how would you summarize the treasures of this passage?
When you can summarize it, you can say, “Yes!” to Phillip’s question above- “Do you understand what you are reading?” Yes, I understand the main story, though I may need help clarifying some details.
2. Pick one golden phrase you discovered from your reading of Isaiah 52:12-53:12 and share it with us. Now put it on your 3x5 to review and enrich yourself today. Let me know that you “Did it” when you did it.
This passage is also amazing because it proves to us that the Bible is from God. No other religious book in all of history has prophecies that are fulfilled in them! So certain was this prophecy to come to pass that it was written in the prophetic past tense as if Christ’s crucifixion had already happened. You could ask a doubter to read the passage and then ask, “Who do you think this is about?” Undoubtedly they will say, “Jesus.” Then let them know it was written 700 years before he was ever born. What are the odds of that? That’s not lucky, that’s impossible apart from our Lord! God's word is a better treasure than any archaeologist could ever hope to find.
I rejoice in your word like one who discovers a great treasure. Ps.119:162
You men are proving you are faithful to your word and commitment no matter what!
You men are proving you are faithful to your word and commitment no matter what!

Good Morning Gents. Just finished reading through the book of Isaiah, such a rich book. If I could summarize 52&53, I would say, the problem and solution, the sin and the sacrifice, the punishment and the substitute. God's people strayed away like sheep and followed their own desires, and as a result the Lord has caused the punishment (as a consequence for their choices) to fall on Him. (V.6)
ReplyDeleteMy verse that I wrote Is. 53:5 - but he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
Amen! Thanks be to God for that sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf. Jesus took the punishment we deserved in that we may have spiritual healing...
Excellent Eddie!
DeleteThe summarizing sentence for me is: God loves us and wants us to live life eternal with him, and despite of our human nature, he planned and executed a plan for us to have a way to restore our relationship and life with Him.
ReplyDeleteVerse in card (did it): Isaiah 53:6 - All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God's path to follow our own… yet the Lord laid on Him the sins of us all. How wonderful to live in God's grace!
Yes, Daniel. That plan of restoration centered in the sacrifice of his Son. Exactly!
ReplyDeleteGreat verse too that supports the above.
1.- The only way for sinful man to find redemption was for Jesus to pay with great suffering and take upon himself the punishment we deserved.
ReplyDelete2.- Verse on my card: - Isaiah 53:3 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering and familiar with pain. Like one whom people hide their faces He was despised, and we held Him in low esteem .
---- Thank you Lord for sending your son Jesus, without Him we would be condemned to eternal damnation.------
Very Roger! Your added prayer is so appropriate.
Delete1) Summary of Isaiah 52:13-53:12.
ReplyDeleteIn this passage, Isaiah reveals the redeeming mission and the success of God's great and favored servant who willingly, suffered terribly at the hands of men in order to take upon himself their deserved punishment and in doing so, justified many, giving them new life in God.
2) Verse to share > Isaiah 53:10 “Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer; and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see the light of life and be satisfied.”
I think there is an example and a principle in this verse for us. Just as God accomplished great things through Christ's willingness to suffer, so God can accomplish great things by our willingness to suffer. Suffering is present in everyone's life and people cope with it in different ways. But when a we are willing to let God squeeze us, in order to accomplish His purposes through us, we too will see the light of life and be satisfied as God is glorified. It's easier when the circumstance of entering into suffering falls upon us. But its rather difficult to willingly choose to enter the path that leads to suffering as Christ did when we can choose to avoid that path by going another mediocre way.

Very good Dave. Thanks also for sharing your good reflections.
DeleteFrom what I read and learned from Isaiah 52 through 53 was God gave His one and only son to die on the cross and take our sins for Himself. I would instruct our proteges and others to live life like God intended us to do. Only know that we will fall short when it comes to His expectations but He will always love us.
ReplyDeleteIsaiah 53:5. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. This how much God loves us but at times we take it for granted
Did it
Very good Mike. I picked the same verse too. You are so right about how we at times take Christ's death for our sins for granted. That is a huge sin right there! Thank you Lord for your mercy.
DeleteIsaiah (The Lord is salvation) prophesized that our savior will suffer and pay in full for our sins because he Loves us unconditionally.
ReplyDeleteThank You God. It is Amazing how much we sin and how he has forgiven us. Of all the sins that we have collectively committed only one sin is unforgiveable.
I chose Isaiah 52:13 See, my servant will act wisely he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted.
I thank God for the privilege of everything that he has entrusted us with. I pray that we continue to be like Him and when we meet Him, that He will say ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! (Matthew 25:21)
Very good Sam! Great verse and prayer as well.
Delete1. Summary of Isaiah 52:13-53:12. -- Jesus, the suffering servant, the Lord Himself, would literally die and was crushed because of my and your future sins. So that one day, we may be reconciled with God again forever! Amen! Wow, what amazing Love!
ReplyDelete2. I chose Isaiah 53:5 that says "But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.". - this verse speaks so powerfully about the relational healing between God and man, because of the stripes or scourging that Christ received on our behalf. The sin that separated us from God has been Forgiven, now our relationship is healed, Amen!
3. Did it
Well said Israel. I picked the same verse also- pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our crookedness or bent away and straying from Him.
DeleteThere will be a King far more superior than kings and yet is set to take all our iniquities, all our sins, and take all the punishment that we deserve. So that one day we will be united with our God for eternity.
ReplyDeleteIsaiah 52:15 NIV
so he will sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths because of him. For what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand..... Thank you Lord for giving me spiritual ears to listen to your voice and eyes to see your truth.
Did it
Very good Ismael! Great thought that I'm going to put in my Bible that kings will honor the King of kings!
DeleteSummary:
ReplyDeleteThe telling of the messiah being crucified and taking on himself our transgressions
Golden phrase:
Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. (Isaiah 53:12 NIV)
DID IT
I have never read this passage before. Why an amazing truth that Isaiah said before even Christ was born
Hey John! So glad you're feeling better. Good words!
DeleteI did it--posted Isaiah 53:12
ReplyDeleteSummary: Jesus suffered and died for our sins so we can be reconciled with God
Outstanding Jack!!!
DeleteThe Son Jesus portrayed the perfect and humble servant to God how was who was broken and bruised and battered; and the essence of Hi purity covered each and every one of us to justify against unrighteousness
ReplyDeleteThe verse I wrote is 53: 5 as well as 6.
But he was pierced for transgressions, he was crushed for our inequities the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all like sheep have gone astray each of us has turned to our own way;"
The rightful reminder of my quick ability to turn from God and his commands is written right here. But in His kindness and love Christ's punishment was a covering\baptism for the healing of mankind-for myself.
Thanks Gary! And thank you for the instructions for the alerts. You're right- it's right there to see. So simple!
ReplyDeleteDid it!
ReplyDeleteSummary: The Suffering Servant that suffers not for himself, but for others.
Golden Verse: 53:6: we all like sheep have gone astray, each has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid upon him the iniquity of us all.
Excellent summary and verse Alvin!
