Last week we began
looking at how to help ourselves and our protégés REAP from God’s word. After
asking the Lord to help us, we focused on the essentials of-
Reading-
sometimes reading a lot to get the big picture, other times reading a little
for reflection.
Exploring
the treasures of the passage. We used the simple tool of summarizing the
passage in Is.53.
Applying
God’s word. We used the SPEAK questions as we looked at 1 Cor.10:1-13
Praying
after reading God’s word. This is what we want to focus on now and for the next several days.
It’s been said that if
you want to humble a Christian ask him how well he’s doing in his prayer life.
For example, see if any of the following might be true of you-
i'd have to admit that my prayer life is shallow and sporadic.
If others were to listen in on my prayers I would be
embarrassed.
I would not be a good model for my protégés to follow.
I don’t have a good way to pray in a balanced and
biblically bold way.
I wish I had a simple way to pray something deep for my
loved ones and proteges.
Why is talking to our
Father in heaven so difficult? There are several things that come to mind, but
perhaps this is especially important to consider- Satan exerts his greatest
opposition against God's greatest things. So no wonder prayer, Bible reading,
witnessing and loving our family members is so challenging at times. Prayer involves warfare. But we just don't see the battle going on behind our backs.
Another problem for many
Christians is that they haven't had much teaching on prayer. You would think
that prayer should come naturally for any child of God. Just look at how little
children talk so much to their parents. But wait a minute. A child only learns
how to talk by hearing his parents and others first talk to him. They, so to
speak, “put words in his mouth.” So we need "prayer talk" to help us to learn how
to talk to God. Thus, we find the disciples asking Jesus, “Lord, teach us to
pray” Luke 11:1. Jesus didn’t scold them, but “put words in their mouth.” He
gave them the words to say. He taught them what has been informally called the
“Our Father” prayer or more formally, the Lord’s prayer. Both Luke 11 and
Matthew 6 record it. Jesus told them to pray after this manner:
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil:
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
for ever. Amen. Mt.6:9-13 KJV
Many of you learned this when you were growing up, even
if you didn’t go to church regularly. That’s good because it is the basis of
learning how to pray powerfully. Great church leaders throughout history have
helped their people learn to pray based on the Lord’s prayer, so let’s also use
it as a model. It’s not to simply to be mouthed, but used as a powerful pattern
for our prayers. So what is the hidden pattern in the Lord’s prayer?
1.-God's Praise- Our Father in heaven, holy is your name
2.-God's Priorites- Your kingdom come, your will be done
3.-Our Petitions-
for physical needs- [Provisions] Give us this day our
daily bread (and all the other things we usually ask for)
for spiritual needs – [Pardon]Forgive us… [Protection] And lead us
not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
4.-God's Praise- For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the
glory forever. (not found in modern Bibles)
Over the next several days we will unpack this transforming prayer that will guide you to pray powerfully to God, for yourself and others. Today, let’s
begin with an introduction to this prayer of prayers.
1.-Open your Bible and read Mt.6:5-14. What is one thing that stands out to you about Jesus' teaching on prayer?
2.-Psalm 86:5 is such an excellent encouragement for us to pray. Write it on your 3x5 and be encouraged to pray.
"O Lord, we pray that you would give us a greater desire to pray.
But may we not wait for the desire, for it also comes in the praying."
"We shall make the enemy moan and God and our souls glad that we pray today."
"The prayer of the upright pleases Him." Prov.15:8

Important Announcements:
I want to thank several of you who have been leaving encouraging notes to your fellow teammates. That encourages me! The Bible says, "let us encourage one another daily..." Heb.3:13. So may I ask that each of us share a few words of encouragement to the last brother to post on the passage just above your good comments? Since our focus is on prayer, let's seek to pray for that fellow warrior that day. His name could go on your 3x5. Your encouragement note could be as simple as "good words" or "I'll cover you" in prayer. Think also how encouraging that will be not only to each of us now, but to new people who will be joining us. What a great team to belong to! I already feel that way and it's only going to get better.
Thanks Gary for pointing out that if you want to be notified in your email box when someone responds to your comments, just check the Notify Me box on the right across from the Publish tab when you're about to publish your comments and then you'll get notified in your email box. Nice!
Thanks Eddie for spearheading Operation Christmas Child held at our church Friday. What a great outreach to the children of incarcerated men from our area. I'm right proud of you and our other men who participated in this event.
Congratulations on another 100% day!
Some of you have been staying up way past my bedtime to respond. Way to go! You are keeping your commitment of "No Scripture, No sleep." That makes you unstoppable! Credit will be given from now on all the way up until 3:00am when the new day's post goes up. Sorry, no more credit can be given if someone posts a day late- M-Th. But the good news is that if you "young whipper snappers" are out all day and night Friday and want to post Saturday, I'm fine with that. Please start looking at the blog on Sunday's to be enriched by your teammates and to encourage them on the GDPs (Growing Deeper Projects).

1. DIRECT--Jesus has made it obvious that our prayers should always be direct to God and be directly to the point, out of Love directly from our heart. Pray only for spiritual blessing, not lottery ticket winners!
ReplyDeletePosted 2. PS 86:5 "You Lord are forgiving and good, abounding in Love to all who call to you,"
To My Brothers--I am leaving shortly this morning to have surgery on my hand and will be out of it for a couple days.
I got up early to post this--but will not be back online today to encourage. Ill do my best if I can focus from the anesthesia.
I will do my best with 1 hand--please give me grace.
I enjoy all your posts and appreciate Dave and his dedication to helping us reach more men for God"s Kingdom
God Bless!
Jack I will keep you in prayer.
DeleteWe love you Jack and will be keeping you in prayer. I'll call you later.
DeleteJack praying for you. Thanks for being faithful with what God is giving you. Pray that your surgery goes smoothly.
DeleteYou are covered Jack
DeleteI pray that your surgery has gone well Jack. Thank you for your very encouraging words.
Delete1.- One thing that really stood out to me was how important it is to approach God with a clean heart during prayer. In verses 12,14,15 it tells us that God will forgive our sins only if we first are forgiving towards anyone whom may have faulted us. Thinking about what Jesus did on the cross for our sins should encourage us to be forgiving of people whom have hurt us.
ReplyDeleteHelp me Lord to always remember how sinful I am and that without your power I cannot experience victory over sin.
1.- I wrote Psalms 86:5 on my card.
* Dave thank you so much for your leadership in this journey, I will be praying that God continue to use you in a mighty way. Have a great day.
Thank you for your appreciative words Roger. So glad you're part of the team. Good reminder how God is holy and so sin must be dealt with.
DeleteAwesome word Roger, it definitely puts me in an awkward position to think, "Oh ! I have to forgive in the same way I want to be forgiven?" This is a powerful lesson for me to absorb for sure thank you for your post
Delete1. Prayer is very personal and it isn't just one-way requests to God, but a personal dialogue. The Lord's Prayer always struck me previously as routine and going through the motions and I used to quietly dislike it when my wife would pray it with my boys. Since then, I saw similar teaching about what it stands for about showing us how to pray, not just to repeat its words thoughtlessly and I now have a new listening for the Our Father. Praising him before requests is a big part that stands out in this personal dialogue with God, and for me it is wrapping my requests with gratitude for what He has already answered. I find that it puts me in a space of acknowledging how far my life, my marriage, my family has come in the last 2 years, regardless of what I may be facing currently.
ReplyDelete2. Did it. I enjoyed the NLT version of Psalms 86:5... "O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help. "
3. Jack and Roger. Way to start the week early for us! I enjoy your insights and your encouraging spirit. I feel a brotherhood developing with you both (as part of Fire Team 1... :-), as well as with Dave and the rest of the M3 team. I definitely needed partners in growing spiritually and you all are an answer to prayer (so I praise God for that, even as I request for a deeper longing and connection to the things of God)
Dave: thank you for your servant leadership and for your heart to see men grow.
Jack: keeping you in prayer for a swift recovery.
Let's all have an amazing week, under God's hand!
"O beautiful Daniel!" is what just fell out of my mouth. Best of blessings to you!
ReplyDeleteMT 6:6 states But when you pray go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. This caught my eye because it shows that you don't have to impress anyone but God. Also God just wants us to have a personal relationship with Him.
ReplyDeleteDid it.
I would like to thank Dave Garrat for taking on this enormous task leading us in this group. I know it is not as easy as it may look. It is time consuming as well as rewarding. He is helping to train Manly Man to have a better relationship with our Lord. May God bless him and his family in all they do.
Lifting you up today Mike. Thank you for being a Man of God, committed to the Cross and living for Jesus.
DeleteGood point from Mt.6:6 Mike. Thanks for your very appreciative words. I'm praying for you as you speak at the wake this evening and hope to be there.
DeleteMt. 6:7...stuck out to me. Do not heap up empty phrases...and looking and Jesus' prayer, it is short and sweet and directed to God and not for the approval of others. Motives are huge in every thing we do. Jesus reminds us of that in his message on prayer. Be careful of how we pray as to not attract unnecessary attention to ourselves, as pray is for God, Our Father and His Glory.
ReplyDeleteDid it!
And yes thank you Dave for your Shepard's heart and being committed to The Mission of making Disciples.
You are so right about Jesus' words on prayer. Thanks for the encouraging words as well. Phileo
DeleteBut you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. "And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. (Matthew 6:6-7)
ReplyDeleteI know this isn't the actual prayer portion of the Lords Prayer but it really speaks to me for a couple of reasons:
1- going into a secret place and shutting the door behind speaks to me of the intimacy required to come to God correctly. Not optional but "...pray in this way". I know at times throughout the day I'll shoot up prayers to God in my mind and heart but I do see a significant place for a secret place to have for just you and the Lord.
2- God gets it. He doesn't need his named repeated after every syllable. I don't mean to speak badly against those that use "fillers" because I have found myself using "extra words" when I wanted to really pray passionately for something, but this passage convicted me to be using choice words and knowing it's ok to pause for a couple seconds In our praying to let the spirit guide us in what to say. I hope I'm making sense
DID IT
You make great sense John. It distracts me when I hear someone leading in public worship that uses vain repetition.
DeleteIt's ironic how you all will spend a lot of time practicing the songs and Pastor Mark will spend a lot of time preparing his message. Yet it seems that some give little thought to what they will pray about. I think there is something to the old practice of writing out at least a portion of the "pastoral prayer." One could do their homework as you all do and find out what songs will be played and what the message will be about. Ugh! Ya got me pullin' out my soap box.
I recall this very conversation coming up in the my previous church and they discussed the very same thing to me with the Lord's Prayer.
ReplyDeletePrayer as I have learned thus far is not purposed to be seen which is why verse 5 and 6 stand out to me. I believe that in context when we pray we do so with honesty and dedication to God, and to pray to communicate directly to God. This is converse to wanting to be seed and the innate love of display.
I wrote Psalms 86:5 on my card.
I like your choice of words Gary- "the innate love of display." We are the "selfie" society.
DeleteMatthew 6:7 NIV
ReplyDeleteAnd when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
In the beginning of my walk I thought that using long and lengthy and big words is what got God's attention. I thought these prayers would be profound and deep. But I know God knows me and knows my heart. God showed me and taught a different way.
Did it.
Hi Ismael. I'm glad you are a part of this M3 Team and that you are faithfully hanging in there with us. I'll be praying for you tomorrow brother, that some how you will have a special and deeper encounter God this week.
DeleteOh the beauty of simplicity Ismael! Jesus spoke so simply but profoundly.
ReplyDelete1) One thing that did stand out to me about Jesus' teaching on prayer in Matthew 6:13 was that Jesus said to ask the Father not to lead us into temptation and to deliver us from evil. In Matthew 4:1 the Bible says that Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the Devil. So I need to be asking the Father daily not to lead me into such a head on confrontation with Satan that Jesus had. I know I cannot escape temptation in this life and only through God's power can I withstand being overcome by evil.
ReplyDelete2) Wrote out Ps 86:5
Very good Dave! You are unstoppable! Up to 12:21 to blog! Thank you.
Delete1. Matthew 6:13 says "And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil....." I know that God never leads me into temptations, but He does allow me to be tempted by them. The key for myself is staying away from places, people or scenarios that tempt me so much. This prayer directs me to constantly ask God to be delivered from many difficult times and deliver me from satan and evil itself. Oh Lord, help me to recognize temptation and give me strength and wisdom to overcome it. Also, help me to choose Your way and never my way! help me Lord.
ReplyDelete2. Did it
Hi Dave Heidekrueger, I noticed that several times, you and I select the same passages of scripture to write about :) Thus, I always read your posts for some words of wisdom :) Keep up the good work :)
Hey Israel! You win the night owl award! Very good words and kind encouragements too.
Delete1. The things that stand out to me are not in Jesus' actual prayer, but in His instruction on how to pray.
ReplyDeleteV6a. Being "seen" by an "unseen God.
V6b. God is looking to "reward" us...probably not a prosperity thing, but more that He hears and acts upon our prayers.
V.8 God already knows what we need...before we even ask.
My big take away from Jesus' instructions is that our prayer is a discipline that God instructs us to commit to not because He needs it, but because we do!
2. Did it!
Very good! I like the thought that the reward may be God's responsiveness.
