Wed.12.10.14...Connecting with our King... REAP- Read

Yesterday, we considered the importance of asking our Father for his divine favor before we opened his book of life to meet with him. Today we want to begin to learn how to R.E.A.P. from his word.

R= Read. We need to be people who read and heed God’s word. Ages ago, Christians were known as “people of the book.” I’m afraid many now barely know the book. They rarely read it. What an insult to God who used over 40 different authors, writing in 3 different languages (Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek), over a period of over 1,400 years to give us the greatest earthly treasure to man- and yet it collects dust. If you were an archeologist, can you imagine finding any greater treasure than the very oracles of God? But today believers treasure their TV shows over the Scriptures. So they don’t read the word because they are “too busy.” I would dare say a king could use that excuse about being too busy to read God’s word. But notice what God expected the kings of Israel to do- “Now it shall come about when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. It shall be with him and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, by carefully observing all the words of this law and these statutes” Dt.17:18-19. Note the connection between reading the word of the Lord daily and learning the fear of the Lord (to honor and obey him.).

The summer before I started attending kindergarten in 1963, the US Supreme Court outlawed the reading of the Bible in public schools. And thus, the most important thing we could learn- the fear of the Lord from the word of the Lord- has not been taught in our schools for over 50 years. Do you think there might be a connection between that and the melt down of morality in our land?

The reading of the Scriptures is of supreme importance. We should know our Father’s book. Jesus various times rebuked the religious leaders who opposed his teaching by slapping their pride saying, “Haven’t you read…?” He expects us to read even end time prophecies found in Daniel. "So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel--let the reader understand—“ Mt.24:15. Even the book of Revelation, which many wrongly avoid, pronounces a special blessing on those who read it- “Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy” Rev.1:3. (Would you like to study through Revelation? We will within this coming year!)

So it’s very good that we are daily reading and heeding God’s word. There are times to read for breadth and other times to read for depth. We will do both. At times we will read through an entire book a chapter a day. At other times, we will slow down and look at only a few verses. Often we will combine the best of both, reading a chapter a day, but picking out one verse or praise phrase to put on our 3x5 to meditate on.

1.-Today, let’s read Ps.119:9-16. (Use the prayer you wrote on your 3x5 from yesterday before you begin reading. Make this a holy habit, not just when I mention it, please.) This is one of the most power packed stanzas of the 22 in this psalm in honor of God’s word. Pick and write out one verse and share what you like about it.

2.-Also write your verse on your 3x5 to meditate on it today.  When you did it, write “Did it.”

3.-Hey, the stanza of 119:9-16 is entitled “Beth.” No, that wasn’t his wife or girlfriend he was dedicating the song to. If you have a study Bible, it probably has a footnote for the beginning of Psalm 119 that explains this. By the way, do you have a study Bible? If so, what kind? (There are many good ones out there.) If you don’t have one, let me know and I’ll help you get a good one at a nicely discounted price.

I have a friend who is a Pentecostal pastor. Some people will ask him at times, “Pastor, do you have a word from the Lord for me?”
“Yes, read your Bible! That’s the word of the Lord for you.” Great response!

You all made the pledge to faithfully meet with your Father and King, no matter what. "No scripture, no sleep!" That makes you unstoppable! Way to go!

Have a Laugh! :)
Okay, if you know me, you know I love to laugh! So what happens when a good ol’ boy named Billy Joe, who doesn’t know his Bible well, is being interviewed to be a deacon?
“Billy Joe, what part of the Bible do you like best?”
“Well, sir, I like the New Testament best, sir.”
“What book in the New Testament?”
“What book, sir?”
“Yes, what book?”
“I think it’s the book of parables, sir.”
“Would you kindly relate one of those parables to this council?”

Poor Billy Joe knew he was up against it, but there was a possibility that the members of the council knew no more about their Bibles than he did. He decided to make a bold attempt, and proceeded as follows:

“Once upon a time a man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves and the thorns grew up and choked the man and he went on and he didn’t have no money and he met the Queen of Sheba, and she gave that man, sir, a thousand talents of gold and silver and a hundred changes of rainments.
And when he was drivin’ along under a big tree, his hair got caught in a limb and left him a hanging there. Yes, sir. And he hung there many days and nights and the ravens brought him food to eat and water to drink.
And one night while he was hanging there asleep, his wife Delilah, come along and cut his hair off, and he dropped and fell on stony ground and it began to rain and it rained forty days and forty nights.
And he hid himself in a cave. And the man went out into the highways and byways and compelled him to come in.
He went on and come to Jerusalem and he seen Queen Jezebel sitting high up in the window and when she saw him she laughed at him, so he said, “Throw her down out of there,” and they threw her down. And he said, “Throw her down again, “and they threw her down, seventy times seven and the fragments they picked up were twelve baskets full. Now whose wife will she be in the days of judgment?”
There was no one on the council who felt qualified to question the candidate further, so Billy Joe was welcomed on as a deacon. :)

  1. Psalm 119: 9 I like that it is so simple yet encompasses everything: reading the word daily, understanding it and following Jesus on
the path of purity as we live our lives, salvation, how to lead others, and how to mentor those who are young in spiritual maturity,

I did it and posted the verse
I have the Apologetics study Bible
Ps 119 is arranged alphabetically for learned psalmography ABCs
Extra credit: know the truth of the Word so we know when our deceiver is present and also to help others who are misinformed

  2. Psalms 119:9 grabbed my attention because I'm a young man who is striving to maintain a life of purity. The more I know, understand and meditate on the Word, the more I can live according to God's Word.
    Did it.
I have the Quest study bible. My footnote says, "this psalm is an acrostic poem; the verses of each stanza begin with the same letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

  3. 1.- Psalms 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

I like this verse because it is telling me what to do in order to obey Christ and not fall into sin - I have to read the Word of God and treasure it in my heart everyday.

  5. Psalms 119: 10 I seek you with all my heart ; do not let me stray from Your commands. This verse touches me in a deep way. I always try my best to follow God's commands but I know I fall short from time to time. The thing that keeps me going is God is a forgiving and loving God and He knows I am not perfect. Who among is.

  6. 1) I'm selecting Ps. 119:16 “I delight in your decrees, I will not neglect your word.”
Like the Psalmist, I want to really be grow in delighting more in God's word.
I remember as a child delighting in the Sears Christmas Catalog that would get delivered to our home about mid Sept. every year. I loved going through the huge toy section and just staring for hours and hours, meditating and imagining what it would be like to play with the cars and trains the games and even the chemistry sets. As Christmas drew closer and closer, so would my hope increase that some of those things would be mine. Now as a man, I have something even better to put my delight into. Like the Psalmist, I know our delight in God's Word will increase more and more as we realize the, priceless, eternal, endless treasures that are in God's Word which God means for us to have. That Christmas catalog got so worn out by the time Christmas came. What a blessing it would be to us men if the same thing happened to our Bibles. May we not neglect your Word any more O Lord, for even day.
    2) Did it.
    3) I have a John MacArther New King James Study Bible.

  8. Psalm 119:10 NIV

I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.
This one touches me because I can relate to the author and probably mostly all people can as well. The way the author pours out saying"seek you with all my heart". I can picture just how high his standard of seeking God's word is daily. Also shows his transparency towards his relationship w/God.

    I did it.

  9. Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Our hearts can be deceitful but when we consume God's word we are less likely to fall into sin.

I have the Zondervan NIV Study Bible. I use to have a Spanish/English that I enjoyed but I lost it. I put my name on this one. I was without my sword going into battle. Losing cause. I happened to leave my new one behind after group and it made it back to me through Pastor Mike.

That was a comical story of the deacon. I also remember the image of the lady on the motor cycle. That had me going.:)

  10. 1. Psalm 119:9 says "How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word." - this verse stands out so much to me, not because I am necessarily a young man, but because this truth stands "True" for any aged man. I am mid-aged and I have recited this verse many times, to keep me living pure :) So guys, this verse is not only directed at young teenagers and twenty somethings, but ALL men :)

  11. Verse 16
I delight in your decrees, I will not neglect your word.
Thought this is a short verse like most of things in the word the message is voluminous. The decrees of God are His commandments, His words, and His laws but they are also that I rejoice in Him consider Him as riches and delight that I seek Joy in His presence rather than mere happiness.

I did it wrote verse 16 on the card

The title of the stanza or the set of 8 verses is symbolized by the letters of the Hebrew alphabet; here being the second of the alphabet.

  12. 1. DID IT!
    2. I selected 119:9 as it is a verse that holds special significance to me. I accepted that LORD when I was 13 at a camp meeting, but it wasn't until a couple of years later that I understood that the LORD speaks directly to us through His word. While at church on a regular Sunday. I was sitting with the guys in the youth group, bored from the pastor's exhortation. I started thumbing through a pew bible and opened up the word at Psalm 119 with verse 9 being at the top of the page, "How can a young man keep his way pure?" That question struck me deep because the rest of that passage explained how to do it. I guess the reason it struck me so was that I suddenly understood how to make my external life (the things that I do, the people I meet, etc.) match up with the inner reality of my heart. There was a way to live my life like I felt inside! I started to weep loudly and it interrupted Pastor Paul's sermon. He asked what was the matter and I simply stood up and read Psalm 119:9-16. The whole youth group lost it and we wound up at the altar and the adults of the church blessed us and prayed over us. My brother and me were so touched that we ran home and sat our Mom and Stepdad down (at the time they were unbelievers) and formally explained to them how much we loved God! So WOW! I just shared the memory with my brother (he's across the table from me reading his Word). The LORD is good!

    3. In case nobody got it, "beth" is a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Psalm 119 is an acrostic poem written using the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. 22 letters, 22 stanzas!

  13. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. (‭Psalm‬ ‭119‬:‭11

I like the idea of something hidden. It comes across to me as something precious placed deep in a room or box or vault. But I don't think this verse is speaking as though no one should see it, I think it is more of a deep rooted hidden treasure from where all your thoughts and actions are birthed. I like that
