Tues.12.16.14...Powerful Praying...Our Father!

Yesterday we began an upward journey in prayer that promises to take us far beyond the lowlands many have dwelt in.  We found that an old familiar prayer reveals the map to get us there. It's the Lords’ prayer and it begins with praise. Unfortunately, most people begin their prayers with, “Thank you Lord for this day. Bless me and bless my family. Keep us safe and in good health. And bless all the missionaries. Amen.” If it was any longer, I’d fall asleep! What an unmanly, emasculated prayer! Where is the connection to the One who is so holy that angels cover their eyes as they cry, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty”? Where is there any praise that God is no longer our outraged Judge, but now our loving Father in heaven, thanks to the sacrifice of His Son?

Speaking of God as our Father, this is how Jesus teaches us to begin praying- "Our Father, who is in heaven." The awesome creator of the universe wants us to approach him as our loving and faithful Father. He has none of the failing characteristics of earthly dads. He is everything we could hope for and so much more. He has not only redeemed us from our slavery to sin, he has adopted us.
And that's not all- "Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father." Gal.4:6.

The Jews at that time didn't typically address God as Father. Jesus was introducing such a wonderful term of endearment. But for most of us, knowing God is our Father isn't a radically new thought. We grew up with the "Our Father" prayer. And now as believers, we know God personally as our Father. Yet our relationship with him can seem quite distant. This is in part due to the fact that he is our Father who is in heaven while we are still here on earth. That is why we long for his kingdom to come. Another reason why our relationship with the Father can seem distant is because knowing the fact that he is our Father is not enough. There is an act that makes the fact of knowing God as Father dear to us.

1.-Reflect on Eph.1:15-18 (though all the rest of the chapter is praiseworthy) and briefly write out what strikes you about this passage.

A few days ago we learned how to REAP by Reading, Exploring, Applying and Praying back the Scriptures. Now we see all the more that to really apply the facts that we may have read and explored, we need to pray them into our hearts. If you've ever met a person who is very knowledgeable of Scripture, but they don't seem to have much joy in their knowledge, perhaps it's because they haven't spent much time praying it into their hearts. Thus, the prayerful reading and response to God's word is a very important practice for us and for us to instill in our proteges. We have not really REAPed if we have not prayed it over. That's why prayerful meditation on a verse or phrase on our 3x5 is so helpful.

2.-So write out Eph.1:17 on your 3x5 and seek to review it and pray it for yourself and others (Write Did it, when you wrote it out.)

Here's an acronym I’ve used for many years that helps me reflect on and praise God as my Father. So instead of just saying, Thank you Lord that you’re my Father” and moving on, I’ll often slow down and praise him as my FATHER- Father, I praise and thank you that you are-
Faithful- You are faithful to care for all my needs and faithful to forgive me. Great is Thy faithfulness!
Available- Because of Jesus, I now have access to your throne and can receive mercy and grace anytime.
Teacher- Thank you for giving me and teaching me your word. As a Father, how kind of you to mentor me.
Helpful- You help me in ways I never even asked for or expected. So many unprayed answers!
Empowering- Thank you that you offer your power for living. Your Spirit is the wind beneath my wings.
Rejoicing - Thank you for all your encouraging words in your word and that you even rejoice over me with singing.  Zeph.3:17

Speaking of singing, the best way I connect my heart to my head is by praying and singing. The greatest book of prayers is the book of Psalms and they were written to be sung. The devil cannot stand a singing saint. (And a whole lot of other people can't stand the way you sing either Dave :) Even if you can't sing well, "make a joyful noise unto the Lord." I personally believe there is a connection between singing and being filled with the Spirit.*  Thanks John P. for giving us songs we can carry with us through the week. Since the giant eraser machine attacks me at church, I write down a portion of a song that I especially like, and then carry it with me during the week.

As you know the prayer of prayers begins, "Our Father" not "My Father." The Lord's prayer reminds us that we are not out there alone. We are part of a family of believers. And isn't it interesting that you get to know a person better through other people who know him. That's why I'm so enjoying the different insights I'm getting from all of you sharing on this blog. Together, we will be getting to better know, "our Father."

Speaking of prayers, thanks for your prayers for Jack regarding his hand surgery yesterday. He's on the mend. Also, how encouraging to see the way several of you encouraged one another! Excellent! (Just to clarify, please comment on the man above you, but not if it was me or someone else giving our encouragement to him.)

*(For those who wish to dig deeper regarding the filling of the Spirit- study out Eph.5:18-21. Isn't it interesting that nowhere in the Bible are we told how to be filled with the Spirit, though there are numerous books written on the subject that list all kinds of formulas and procedures. But perhaps the passage has been giving us the answer all along. Note the following 4 participle phrases in Eph.5:19-21- speaking...singing...giving thanks...submitting to one another.
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit [Literally- keep allowing yourself to be filled, controlled, under the influence of the Spirit], speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; and be subject [Literally-submitting] to one another in the fear of Christ. NASB. Notice also there is only a comma, not a period at the end of v.18. Don't you think such saints, lovingly behaving this way, the Spirit naturally would fill? I don't ask the Spirit to fill me; (No wonder you're so carnal Dave :) I seek to be the kind of person he will fill. So as we share the word and sing and give thanks and live in a submissive- respectful way with others, I believe we can claim that we are filled with the Spirit. That's my take on it, whachuthink?)

  1. 1.- This passage highlights the importance of the being filled with the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in order to really get to know who God is. Like you mentioned Dave, some scholars may have studied and know the Bible really well but they don't believe in God who is the author and creator of us all. On the other hand all of us that have received His gift of salvation do understand that without Him and his Word we are lost. I praise you and thank you Lord for who you are and your son Jesus.

Thank you again Dave for your guidance. May God continue to bless you.

  2. 1. It's a loving show of brotherly love and praying over fellow believers to be blessed with gifts of the spirit
It impressed upon me and I Applied and prayed by praying it over all the M3 men, that we may know the hope that He has called us for.

    3. I'm needing to grow in the area of discernment of what is the Spirit doing within me and through me. I've been labeling it as "God showing His love through me", and maybe that is accurate, but I think I've been focusing on the Father and the Son, without exploring what the Spirit is doing within me. I'll digest the word you've shared that through who I am being, I am creating a vessel for the Spirit to fill.

    4. Thanks Dave for today's sharing. May the Lord pour into you, as you've been pouring into us.

  3. 1. Ephesians.1:17 ..."so that you may know him better."
I was just talking to my close friend, who is a newly wed. He was telling me how him and his wife are getting to know each other better, specifically in how they communicate and understand one another. As they talk through things and come to an understanding of each other, they learn to connect and relate to one another better. I think that's exactly how our relationship with Our Father should look like, because he wants that close, intimate relationship with us and for us to know him more.

  4. Ephesians 1:15-18 Is about taking God's word into our hearts and praying for the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him,
and understanding his calling and will for us. Love our Brothers and sisters and pray for them to follow him.

Ephesians 1:17 Did it " I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, would give you a Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him."

  5. As I read the passage here I noticed in verse 16 of Paul's care for the people he is in leadership of and that he has not stopped giving thanks for the people's faith and is committed to prayer for them as well. I know as leaders we have to be committed to the same thing and have a livelihood of good communication and dedication to our protégés. I hope we can meet Paul's example here of praying for them, helping them to recognize God as their father, as well as continually growing with Christ.

I wrote Eph 1:17 on my card along with the acronym as I needed the reminder.

  7. I agree with the posts above. Also Ephesians 1:15-18 showed me that we have to be filled with the Lord in our hearts and minds. It also showed me that Paul was a prayer warrior. If I could just be in the same mind set as him when I pray I would be better in my prayer time.

    Did it.

Dave Heidekruger glad to have you part of the team. Iron sharpens iron and I know you will be a great asset to this team.

Eddie I see great things coming your way. I will pray for God to fill your hearts desires.

  8. 1) Ephesians 1:18 &19 reveals to me that I have been given priceless treasures that I now possess in Christ. They are: the hope of my Heavenly Father's calling, the riches of my Heavenly Father's eternal inheritance, and the availability of my Heavenly Father's incomparable power for me. If I had won the megabucks lottery, I think I could get, so, so excited. But I should be even more excited in God. - Heavenly Father, you are so wonderfully patient and kind and generous. I want to know you even better like Paul knew you. Please give me your Spirit of wisdom and revelation and enlighten the eyes of my heart so that I may be as excited as Paul was to know you.

  9. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, (‭Ephesians‬ ‭1‬:‭18‬ NASB)
The eyes of our heart stricken me deeply as to what kind of "eyes" we have. Are my eyes the kind that always see the hope I have in Christ or do I sometimes put sunglasses on that we're never meant to be there in the first place?

  10. I chose verse 17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

We are called to speak into the future of our brothers and sisters. One of the best ways is to pray that they will draw near to God.

It also reminds me of 1 Corinthians 13:1-5 13 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

  11. 1. What I found in this passage is the openess of Pauls heart towards the people and the hope that Paul is constantly sharing. Giving us an example to diligently pray for one other and to others.

  12. 1. Eph 1:16-17 says, "I do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers; that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him." --- This simple, yet so profound verse, reveals to me that I need to pray for others much more than I currently do. I hate to say it, but my prayers are usually about me and my future and my life (too selfish). OK, I just took a few minutes to practice this verse and I just prayed for every man in Manly Mentoring separately and personally, including Dave G :) as he leads this group :) that we may experience Christ in a fresh new personally dynamic way, that will transform our relationship with Him :) That was refreshing :)

  14. 1. Firstly, thank you all for your prayers for my wife. She is home from the hospital and all seems well.
    2. Regarding the passage in Ephesians, I find the things that Paul prays for to be the most interesting thing about this passage. The Ephesian church was doing well be any church metric, Paul seems to have personally benefitted from their love and grace, however, Paul prays for wisdom and revelation so that they may know Him better (V.17) Apparently, it is possible to be doing the right things, with the right motives, for the glory of God, and still need to know Him. This suggests that there is a progression that Paul thought the Ephesians need to push toward! In other words Paul as the Coach of the Ephesian church wanted to congratulate the team for their game performance, but was pushing them toward improving their game!
