In our ongoing scriptural study on Being a Godly MENTOR,
we’ve looked at the vital importance of being a godly Model, and a good
Encourager. There were 10 lessons on each of these. Wow! Today we are going to
take only a few days to look at the next topic, which starts with the letter N
and that reminds us that we need to be Noble in battle for our 1.ourselves, 2.our
protégés and 3.lost men. This all involves warfare prayer. These three key
areas we need to W.A.R. for. Today we will take the first letter of W.A.R. to
focus on.
W= We need to pray
for ourselves to live Worthy
lives.
There is a blessed balance presented in Scripture regarding
us living worthy lives. On the one hand we are hopelessly unworthy, yet on the
other, we can live worthy lives. Consider John the Baptist. Jesus said of him, “I
tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone
greater than John the Baptist.” Mt.11:11. Yet John declared that he was not worthy to even untie Jesus’ sandals
(Luke 3:16). Jacob put it well-“I am
unworthy of all the faithfulness and kindness you have shown me.”
Gen.32:10. As I like to say when people ask, “How ya’doin’?” "I’m doin' better
than I deserve.” Because of my wicked sins (all sin is), I am only worthy of
death and hell. Thus, even when we have done our best as believers, we are
unworthy of eternal life. That’s why Jesus told us to say, “We are unworthy servants; we have only
done our duty.” Luke 17:10.
But when we own up to our tragically fallen, unworthy
condition, Jesus amazes us with his amazing grace. He will greet his devoted “unworthy”
servants, saying, “Well done good and faithful servant!” Mt.25:21. He gives us
a new nature and then calls us to live according to it. Paul declared, “I urge you to live a life worthy of the
calling you have received.” Eph.4:1. We are called to “be imitators of God
as dearly loved children and live a life of love just as Christ loved us and
gave himself for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Eph.5:1-2.
The fastest and best way to change a person’s unworthy behavior
is to change their very identity. Imagine that the 4th grade class
trouble maker is singled out by his new 5th grade teacher. She says,
“I’ve heard all about you, but I don’t believe a word of it. I believe in you.
And I’m going to give you the title of ‘Class Example’ for others to follow
whenever I have to step out of the classroom.” What a change in behavior would
be wrought in his motivation to live up to this new role or identity she gave him. Of course it’s even
better for us believers. God has actually adopted us, giving us a royal
identity- child of the King. We are his dearly loved children. And the Spirit
of Christ has taken up permanent residence within us, prompting us to will and
to do of his good pleasure (Phil.2:13). Plus, we now are part of His forever
family with others encouraging us to live worthy lives. Paul said, “For you know that we dealt with each of you
as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting and urging
you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.”
1 Th.2:11-12.
But Paul knew that
such words urging people to live lives worthy of God were not enough. Prayer was
and is vitally needed to help shape the spiritual life into a worthy life.
There are spiritual forces greatly opposing our progress to a worthy,
commendable life (Eph.6:10-12). Thus, we need to pray for ourselves and others as
Paul did, “We constantly pray for you, that
our God may count you worthy of his calling…so that the name of our Lord Jesus
may be glorified in you…” 2 Th.1:11,12.
What does a life worthy
of his calling look like? I believe there are key ingredients that make up such
a worthy life. We could illustrate all these with Scripture, but for the sake
of time, let’s just mention them. See if you agree.
1.A worthy life is
one where we are devoted to God and His word and growing in godly character.
2.A worthy life is
one where we are actively engaged in the top priority of the great commission-
making and multiplying disciples.
3.A worthy life is
one where we are fighting in prayer and in our choices to live nobly as models
for others and to see others freed and joining in the fight.
4.A worthy life is
one where we are striving to live lives of love. We will admit it when we blow
it and we will keep striving to show and grow in love. Without love we are
nothing.
5.A worthy life is
one where we are not self reliant, but closely connected to Christ and other
committed believers.
If you agree that
these above 5 points largely make up a worthy life, then you shouldn’t have a
hard time remembering how to pray them into your life and the lives of others.
Why? Because you already know them. As you compare the top 5 with the following
5 summary points, I think you will see they are the same and summarize those worthy
ingredients:
1.Mature in character (for example being
a Power HOUSE man and a good example)
2.Active in mentoring (the very thing you
are in coaches training for)
3.Noble in battle (the very thing we are now starting to study over the next few days)
4.Loving in relationships (the very thing
we R for and will be working on together until the day we die)
5.Yoked to Christ and others (the very
thing you are a part of)
“All this is evidence
that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the
kingdom of God” 2 Th.1:5.

count you worthy of his calling” 2 Th.1:11 Then do the Did it. Please pray
often today and in the future that you and we would be MANLY. Pray over the
meaning of each letter into our lives. “O Lord, help me and us be Mature in character-
Power HOUSE men and godly examples” etc.

G.a. What amazes me, is that we all fall short of the glory of God. We are all sinners. Paul considered himself the chief sinner yet he wrote quite a bit of the Bible. We are all saved by God's amazing grace. How truly sweet it is.

help us to put on the spiritual glasses to be able to see what you see lord. So that we can encourage more brothers to join M3.
Props on being the first to lead this week. I pray that the Lord would help you and I both grow in mature, Christlike character. Grace and Peace George.
DeleteGreat words George. I'm going to quote you on them.
DeleteG.a.- Gen 32:10 "I am NOT WORTY of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant..."
ReplyDeleteWhat an important lesson this was because when things in life are going well for me I tend to forget the source of the many blessings and start to believe that it is because I'm a good person or I'm smart, that things are working out well. Instead of acknowledging that the source of good in my life is God. Since we were encouraged to pray Attack prayers I have actively been thanking God as the source of all the many blessings received.

ReplyDelete27Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

I pray this often for myself and others...that my life would be worthy of the Gospel.

DeleteG a- Live worthy lives. "even when we have done our best as believers, we are unworthy of eternal life." Such a strong statement. I believe when I came to Christ my life got harder. For it is not by works that we get to heaven but by giving our lives to Jesus Christ. I had people put me down when I get mad about something, They say " don't you go to church, you can't get mad" Hey I am human. Sometimes things get a little too much you know. I've been learning to constantly pray that GOD continues to mold me into the servant he wants me to be. I want to live a WORTHY LIFE.

Vince, Right on Bro--perseverance will win as God opens their eyes and hearts. This life is just a mist, but eternity is forever in paradise. Always keep focused and show love--but remember Godly anger is not bad when you rebuke evil.
DeleteWe all over-react at times. It adds to the frustration when other people even rightly point it out. If they're right, then after we've counted to 10 err 10,000, the best response is simply to say, "You were right." I've found it often takes about 30 minutes for that calm perspective to return though. We'll have to blog about that sometime.
DeleteG. a. Live lives worthy of God' s calling as it is only he who knows who is worthy and what is truly in our hearts. It is our mission to be part of His great commission to follow Jesus and lead others to follow Him also, and to help Him to turn others from the darkness. The other alternative is Hell which separates them from God's presence for those refuse God's grace and influence in how they live.

Thanks brother Sammy, I love that song. Around 2003 before I rededicated my life to Christ, my older brother invited me to his church for a drama/play he was a part of. I forgot all about it and I was finally getting to bed at 9 am from "partying" all night when he called and reminded me that service started at 10 am. I decided to go and I heard that song. It cut me to the core with conviction. By the grace of God, a little more than a year after, I bowed my knees in surrender.
DeleteYou presented a great testimony Sam. I believe that our lives need to tackle a crisis of belief in order to understand how God reaches for us.
DeleteSo proud of you this Sunday bro! It aint easy baring yourself the way you did! The Lord has brought you a long way!!

ReplyDeletea) Identity change, we will live out what we have become persuaded of. Weather that means we are "slaves of sin" and see ourselves as helpless, and our situations as hopeless excusing our selves and denying responsibility because after all we are "helpless". Or we believe we "I can do all things in Christ Jesus", "I am a new creation" translation I have no excuses for failing God other then I chose to. I am a man, I am responsible.

ReplyDeleteTo be counted unworthy by God would mean living out lives that were opposite of God's purposes, desires and commands. Unworthy lives, contradict what God intends our lives should look like. Unworthy lives brings discredit and disgrace upon God's reputation.
To be counted worth by God would mean living out lives that were in harmony with God's purposes, desires and commands. Worthy lives reflect the holy, good and loving character of God. Worthy lives point to God's magnificent glorify.

DeleteG.a- Today's message brings me humility and great hope. In knowing that there is no level to "get to" with God, I that much more appreciate the sacrifice of Christ. I realize that any righteous act I perform gives me no occasion to brag but rather to praise God, for it is his spirit that molds me and through his power that I'm capable of all that I do. Knowing that each day I live I will sin and that my sin will weight equally regardless of its nature, keeps me reliant upon Christ's ability to redeem me.

ReplyDeleteTo be worthy shows quality to the type of vessel and instrument the God chooses to serve within Hos kingdom. A person of lowly stature and whose identity is equal to filthy rags. Yet not only is such a person chosen and used but they would be renewed and made worthy in the image of Christ that stands before God. At the judgement seat God sees the person covers by the Son who is then deemed worthy.
In Revelation I remember v 2:17
"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it."
To conquer is to resemble what it is to be MANLY.

Ga. Today's reading speaks to me because the enemy attacks me consistently with the words "you are worthless" for who I have been and what I have done. The Lord has greatly strenghtened me and encouraged me over the last year, in daily claiming redemption and forgiveness and by inspiring me to stand in the face of attacks with the words "I am a son of God, He loves me and He sent his son to shed his blood for me".

Ga. Dave G said "The fastest and best way to change a person’s unworthy behavior is to change their very identity." This is very powerful, as this is what God does to us, when we accept Christ as Lord and Savior :) We become children of the Most High God, adopted into His family. We are washed clean of our sins and like the bible says, Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and then we are sealed with the Holy Spirit guaranteeing our inheritance in Heaven :) Wow, talk about a New Identity :)
