Wed. 2.4.15...Being a Godly MENTOR...Encourage part 3

Life is hard at times. That's why being a godly MENTOR involves E = Encouraging others. As we seek to help someone who is discouraged, it’s important to first ask, why are they so down. Sometimes you may get far more than you expected. I counseled a man (not from M3) on the phone recently who began playing a long song of the blues – it was more like his lifelong record collection. At one point I paused his discouraging songs and gave him the following assignment- Every time a discouraging thought comes to mind, write it down (expose the lie), then write down what you believe God would say to encourage you (replace the lie with the truth- be transformed by the renewing of your mind.) Fortunately, he liked that idea, so he ended the blues-fest. It will work wonders for him if he will do the work.

In dealing with discouragement in our own lives or with others, we are going to find help in a psalm today. Oftentimes people think of the Psalms as a book of praise songs. It is. It was Israel’s song book. But of the 150 songs, many are laments- sad songs, not happy, praise songs. I'm glad, because it gives us a realistic view of life and our human emotions. Fortunately, for every emotion, from storm to calm, there is a psalm. We do get down and discouraged. The Christian life contains tough times and sorrowful situations. Paul, who exhorted us to rejoice in the Lord always, also at times was sorrowful and downcast. I’m thankful he didn’t wear a mask, pretending to always be happy, happy, happy. He openly shared, “We were under great pressure, for beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life.” 2 Cor.1:8. Wow! Now let’s meet another honest man. Read Psalm 42. You’ll see how he struggled with deep discouragement and you’ll also discover the proper prescription he gave himself to get out of the pits.

Psalm 42:5 asks the question we could use with a discouraged person-“Why are you in despair…? Just be prepared for perhaps a long blues song. People will tell you about lousy things that have happened to them. But it’s not what happens to you, it’s what happens in you (how you interpret it) that matters. Two married men, who are sole providers for their families of 5, both get let go from the same company. One interprets this as evidence God is against him and thus despairs. The other man has faith that God is still for him and will somehow see him through. Help people look at circumstances from a true view of God and life. As we’ve said, they will be transformed by the renewing of their minds.

1.-The psalmist mentions several things that have him singing the blues. Pick out one and mention it.

2.-The psalmist not only asks himself what’s got him down, he also writes himself a prescription for his downcast state (42:5). As a matter of fact, like the repeated chorus in a song, he repeats his prescription for encouragement at the end of the song. (And in the sequel psalm, Psalm 43, he also ends it with the same chorus.)  Write his prescription down on your MP3 card- “Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Ps.42:11b. After writing it out, do the Did it.

That man knew he needed to put his hope in God and praise him. I shared with you the other day, an old favorite song that helped me battle against the demon of discouragement- "Praise the Lord." If you have a song that lifts you up when down, please feel free to share it with us.

How 'bout lifting up the soul of a brother with an encouraging word? Bless the brother with such who last posted above your comments today. Thanks!

I appreciate those of you who opened up a couple of days ago and shared a bit of your battles against the demon of discouragement. There are two leadership approaches when it comes to sharing such. One approach is to hide one's struggles so that followers will really look up to you. The other approach is to lead with a limp. Paul took that approach, letting others know how down he got at times (2 Cor.1:8-11). (This is the approach that I take as well. If anyone thinks less of me for it, so be it.) We all struggle, so let's be open about it. Even Jesus was greatly distraught in the garden of Gethsemane- "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death." Mark 14:34. We need to honestly share at those times as Jesus did. And we need to help others when they are "going through it" with our care, prayers and encouragement.

By the way, after reading your posts of encouragement to each other yesterday, I said out loud, "Where could you go to get so much great encouragement?!" I'm so glad to be in M3 with you.

Dave I continue to pray for you, that you would always draw us closer to God through your daily writings. May God continue to use you to build His kingdom. When you do face trials be encouraged by Psalm 37:1-5
1 Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers!
2 For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb.
3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
4 Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

  2. 1. Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God. (‭Psalm‬ ‭42‬:‭11‬ ESV)

Even when times seem the darkest we must trust and cling to the promises that we believe will come true. There will be times when we cannot see the light at the of the tunnel. And when it seems that there is lack of clarity into whether or not God care, we must have hope as it is evidence of our faith.

    A. On Monday I shared that I regularly struggle with discouragement and it may have been a surprise to some, but I've come to recognize that the triggering mechanism is what seems to be a never ending cycle of life's problems ("Here we go again" mentality). I understand that no one is immune from them, but it can be exhausting. As King Solomon expressed in Ecclesiates, everything under the sun is vanity/meaningless (paraphrased). Though we are not of this world, we have to live in it, so I need to fix my eyes on Jesus, our heavenly hope (Hebrews 3:1). I heard on the radio yesterday that instead of focusing on our problems and glancing at God, we should focus on God and glance at our problems.

    B. As for the encouraging songs, they're too many, each ministering to me in special ways at different seasons/crossroads of life. But here goes, Chris Tomlin "I lift my hands" www.youtube.com/watch?v=boI2VdQBdA4

    C. This word goes out to all of you men who despite the heavy workloads and responsibilities, you have shown yourselves to be faithful in meeting/posting on this blog. Some at early hours of the day and others late into the night. Hebrews 11:6b "he (God) rewards those who earnestly seek him."

    2. " put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my savior and my God." Psalm 42:5 Did it

I have a true story of one of the Godliest men I have ever met.
He was a young man and a true believer as he followed Jesus his whole life--I have always seen the Lord in him.
That is my theme song --Let them see him in me
He had a great believer for a wife and 2 children about 5 and 7, and all was good and all he did he dedicated to the Lord, and he was blessed in all he did. Everything was great until 1 day he was driving his car and making a turn, when an ambulance ran the light without and lights nor horn--the driver was drinking. The ambulance struck the side of his car at a great force and spun his car and as it spun--his son was tossed out the window of the car. His own car then rolled on top of his only son and crushed the boy--then the man got out of his car and took on super human strength and he rolled the car(Cadillac) away from his son. The son died in his arms, but he called out to the Lord--why? But he then thanked the Lord that his son would not suffer a slow death and he prayed for the ambulance driver.
Of course he weeped often over this incident , but he trusted in God no matter what and realized that there was a reason.
He was later blessed with 3 grandsons born to his daughter, who are beautiful Christian men and follow Jesus as they love the Lord.
His faith continued to grow and his praise for the almighty Father and he has been an inspiration to so many others that it is impossible to count. God is my inspiration and my Father, but I now look at him as my father on earth, the one I can only dream to be like--I have always seen Jesus in him and he has been responsible for my journey with the Lord--as the Holy Spirit shined through him. Even today I went to the memorial for his son and he cried, but said to me "Jack always trust in the Lord--no matter what. he is always good and faithful."
So if any of us get down maybe we could envision this heart-felt story and praise our God and give him Glory always.

Verse 9 is talking about a huge detail that we can easily misinterpret and get backwards. "I say to God, my rock: “Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” We say God why have you forgotten me but this is not at all what happens as it is we who forget God. We can easily forget that God is everlasting and without end. Our trials would mean little compared to God's unlimited sight over time. (2 Peter 3:8) … With the Lord one day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. If a lifetime in this world is so short compared to eternity, we surely need the reminders to not forget just the path in our lives and what God has done for us. But also that there is little time to waste while we have a change to be on Mission with God. The prescription is Praise. Let us remember who it is that we serve

  13. The psalmist sings of how he has tears for food day and night which makes it sound as though he cries constantly all the while his enemies laugh at his misery. This seems to be another important reason for why praise is important. Complaining rather than praising shows others dissatisfaction with God, a lack of faith, and who wants to hear how mighty God is in the same sentence one complains about God? It is therefore for in my interest for purposes of Faith and Honor to represent God in the best light.

    Completely by Among the Thirsty...

    I'm feeling so small
    Standing here weeping
    As I'm coming clean
    Of the secrets I'm keeping
    I've caused so much pain
To the ones I love the most
    And I'm falling apart
As I carry my heart to Your throne

    I am completely surrendering
    Finally giving You everything
You're my redeemer, I run to the cross
Because You are more than enough
    Lord complete me
    Cause I'm Yours completely

    I'm letting go
    There's nothing I own
    The treasures I held
    Just weighed down my soul
    And there's nothing left
    Inside of me
    But a longing for You
And a longing to be the man that You need

    I am completely surrendering
    Finally giving You everything
You're my redeemer, I run to the cross
Because You are more than enough
    Lord complete me
    Cause I'm Yours completely

I let Your gifts take the place of you
But You pulled up my selfishness from it's roots
I am a broken and fragile me
But I'm where You want me to be

    I am completely surrendering
    Finally giving You everything
You're my redeemer, I run to the cross
