Tues.2.24.15...Being a Godly MENTOR...Observe...part 2

In our series on Being a Godly MENTOR, we introduced a new letter yesterday- the letter O for Observe. We saw consequences of not being observant- wrecked cars and relationships. We also saw that sheep are prone to wander. And if shepherds aren’t observing their flocks, a sheep may wander away from the flock (church) and get devoured by the devil. Jesus is our perfect example of being a good and observant shepherd. He said, “I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me-...and I lay down my life for the sheep.” John 10:14,15. What devoted love He has for us! 1 John 3:16 reminds us of this great love- “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.” Men in the military have laid down their lives for their brothers. Most of us won’t be in such a life or death situation.

John goes on to give us a practical application of how we ought to lay down our lives for each other in the very next verse- “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?” 1 John 3:17. There again is that emphasis on seeing or observing how our brother is doing. Often the greatest and most frequent need we may see is the need to encourage a brother who is starting to lose focus and drift. Like a sheep, he may start to wander in search of the supposed greener grass on the other side. But we can restore him before it’s too late. Listen to how James puts it- “My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.” Ja.5:19-20. We should do whatever we can to bring him back to the fold. Better yet, let’s encourage one another daily, so none of us is lured away by sin’s deceitfulness (Heb.3:13). As observant shepherds, let’s watch out for one another.

Notice this same emphasis Paul gave in his charge to the leaders of the church at Ephesus to be knowledgeable, observant or watchful of the flock- “Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.” Acts 20:28. I know you may not have viewed yourself as a shepherd, but you are. We are our brother’s keeper, and are to be watching out and seeking to guard him from danger and drifting away. Paul put it this way, “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love” Rom.12:10. That's being a good shepherd.

Thank you for being devoted to your band of brothers. We are “in the trenches together.” We need to be watching out for each other because the enemy wants to take us out. Let’s continue to be on the look-out for each other. (I got your back.) So again, please call each one of your men on an ongoing basis. Embrace them as such- your men of whom the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. (Overseers see and take action.) If you see (observe) on the GREAT scoreboard that someone on your team didn’t blog yesterday, by all means contact him. Let’s let him know he is dearly loved and very important to us.

I believe that you, as a coach, have the heart of a shepherd given to you by our Chief Shepherd. Peter wrote these rewarding words to good shepherds-“When the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.” 1 Pet.5:4.

1.- Write out the following verse on your MP3 card-“Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.” Rom.12:10

2.-The Lord, our good shepherd, has made you in his image- so you also have a shepherd’s heart. (Yes, we all need to strengthen our hearts.) So will you commit to caring and calling on an ongoing basis the sheep under your watch-care? Yes/No

(I kinda’ already know the answer to that, but I think it’s good that we clarify what a coach is really committed to. And we’re almost done with coaches training. Way to go and thanks!)

Don't forget, all you have to do is put a letter up if you did such. So if you didn't have anything to R about, or you forgot to A= Attack in prayer, just skip typing the letters R and A.

G. How many individuals or groups did you get to enrich from your MP3 card?

R? (We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault, he is a perfect man” Ja.3:2)

E? (This is what we have been talking about- Observing and Encouraging.)

A? O Lord, awaken men to join us in the fight! Give us Power HOUSE men!
