We’ve
been looking at the importance of being a godly MENTOR- one who not only
M=Models Christ, but also E= Encourages others to follow Christ. To guard
against the danger of drifting down the river and over the falls of folly, we
need to “encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that
none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.” Heb.3:13. But how do we
“encourage one another” daily? First, you might be surprised to discover how
this word “encourage” is used in scripture. The Greek word (parakaleo)
translated “encourage” here and elsewhere, is an all encompassing word. It is
at times translated “to admonish, beg, beseech, call, console, comfort, exhort,
encourage, urge.” As one my Bible profs put it, “It means to pat someone on the back at the appropriate level.”
A coach
might give a player a happy and encouraging pat high on a player's back for playing well. Or he might give a hurting player a comforting pat on the shoulder. If the player is to go into the game to run a vital play, he might
give him an urgent pat. If he is messing up, he might give him an exhorting
swat on the behind. (I wouldn’t recommend such on your protégé, but you get the
word picture.:) As coaches, we need to give protégés appropriate responses-encouraging, comforting, urging or exhorting responses. Let’s look at how this word is used in scripture with
its different shades of meaning. (I will bold
the English words that come from our word “parakaleo”)
Paul
tells the carnal Corinthians- “I am writing this
not to shame you but to warn you as my dear children. Even if you had ten thousand guardians
in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your
father through the gospel. Therefore
I urge you to imitate me.” 1
Cor.4:14-16. We know that being a good MENTOR, starts with being a good M= Model
for others to imitate. This is so crucial. “Therefore I urge you to imitate me” Paul declared. Urge protégés to imitate the G.R.E.A.T. model
or example you and the team members are setting. We are not perfect, and we are
not calling people to be perfect. But we are calling people to Christ and progress in following him.
If they will be faithful in this GREAT pursuit, we know they will grow.
What else might we
urge others to do and be? Paul urges this- “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the
calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in
love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of
peace.” Eph.4:1-3. Other
translations render this, I beg, beseech,
implore, exhort. In other words, it is vitally important that we help
proeteges understand that this is not a game or just an online swapping of
thoughts. We are calling men to what Christ is calling them to- life
transformation and joining forces to multiply MANLY (Christlike) men- Power
HOUSE men who are Hungry, Obedient, Unstoppable, Strong in the Lord and
Encouraging. We want to see them become encouragers with us. There are so many
to reach and teach. We need them to grow up and help.
Paul urges us to
also be spurring others on. “And we urge
you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be
patient with them all.” 1 Th.5:14 ESV. We can’t dodge our responsibility
to speak into the lives of others when uncomfortable truth is needed to be said,
such as having to admonish someone who is idle or lazy. How can we speak the
truth with tact? Perhaps we could say, “Brother, you are a better man in Christ
than this. I know the enemy wants to sideline you. Fight against such. Rise up
to your manly calling in Christ! In Christ I know you can do this!” Speak words
of faith, hope and love into his life.
Being a godly
mentor is largely about being a godly example and a good encourager. Notice how
Paul emphasizes these two vital traits- “You are witnesses, and so is God, of
how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed. For you know that
we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives
worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.” 1 Th.2:10-12.
I love the fatherly imagery Paul uses here. He would pat his children on the
back at whatever the appropriate level needed to help them live lives worthy of
God and their glorious calling.
1.-What is one
truth that stands out to you from the several scriptures we’ve read today?
2.-Write on your
MP3 card, “For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with
his own children, encouraging, comforting
and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and
glory.” 1 Th.2:11-12.
Please continue to give a word of encouragement to another brother on the blog.
You should have received, via email, an updated list of all your current team-mates. Please use it to start giving encouraging calls, emails or texts to another brother. Then starting tomorrow, give yourself credit by the letter "E" that you will see, for the number of people you reached out to with an encouraging word.
My only request- please do not send our mass emails or texts. Let's keep it personal. Thanks!

the mountain alone. So if you ever feel like you’re at the end of your rope,
just give a tug!

1.- I had always thought about encouragement as something that you do help someone when they are going through a hard time, I did not realize it had a much broader meaning (to admonish, beg, beseech, call, console, comfort, encourage, urge). How enlightening it was to read the parts of scripture that were mentioned in today's blog with this new understanding and also what a great new lesson on how to be a good example for our proteges to follow.

Roger, good morning. Have a blessed week brother.

Awesome meeting yesterday. Encouraged by you all. Pumped to be part of M3! Here's to another month of unstoppability!
Brother Eddie, God has blessed you tremendously. It's encouraging to see a young man walk in the ways of the Lord.
DeleteI agree Eddie!
Delete1.“I am writing this not to shame you but to warn you as my dear children."
ReplyDeleteAs the missionary founding father and planter of the Corinthian church, Paul was in a privileged position that allowed him to have a unique relationship with the church. It bestowed him with a special bond that allowed him to speak to them with such bold and endearing words of encouragement and exhortation. A total stranger could have shared the same, but it probably would not have the same impact, not to mention the potential for complete disregard.
In the book titled "His needs her needs" by Willard F. Harley, Jr. he describes relationships as bank accounts. You have to invest/deposit into the account in order to make a withdrawal, otherwise, it'll be a non-sufficient funds infraction subject to fines and penalties.
Paul continued to deposit his time, resources and talents into the churches but seldom made withdrawals. Though it was necessary on rare occasions, as in the book of Philemon (1:19). We tend to heed the request, advice and encouragement from those who have diligently invested/deposited into our lives and have shown to have our best interest at heart, not their own.
Let's be mindful to tend to the field(s) God has given us and allowed us to sow/deposit into. Any good farmer would agree, "If the produce is not ready to harvest/pick, don't bruise it!" 1 Peter 3:15 "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,"

ReplyDeleteBe patient with everyone is probably one of the hardest thing do when the person you are mentoring doesn't fully commit, but we have to see how God was and is patient with us.
I pray that none of you will be discouraged by others actions, I pray that you will keep pressing on for God's glory. May God be victorious in you. God bless.

1) Encouragement, such a powerful tool that we have to help other brothers. I was talking to my dad the other day he was saying " man back in my days there was no texting, email or Facebook, just a phone." We are so blessed to have so many ways to send out encouraging words to people. It always feels good to encourage someone whether they are having a good day or not. I like listening to K-Love they always have an encouraging word. That gets me going through the day.

Ah yes Vince- "Positive, Encouraging K Love." Gotta love that motto!
DeleteThe one verse that stands out to me is “And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.” 1 Th.5:14. Having patients comes with practice. Some times it's hard to have patients when you think the person should know the subject at hand. We have to remember just because we may know the subject at hand it doesn't mean the person you are talking to does. As I said before we have to be teachable to be a good teacher.

George I glad see you are my team mate. We are like fire and ice. You put out fires in your career and I put people on ice (in jail for crimes they committed) in my career.
Mike, missed you yesterday but you are always an intricate part of our group and enjoy your thoughtful posts
DeleteFire and Ice- LOL Mike!
DeleteMike I also missed you to. Mike now we have to light the fires for Christ.

ReplyDeleteUnderstanding the various differences in personifies helps us to be patient as we plant seeds in others for our Father to do his thing. Each requires a different approach as some will be obstinate, some like weathervanes. Some open hearted, some take little effort and some many waterings of the seed to nurture it-- but we must be patient and persevere for the Father has called us to do this. We need to realize that our journey never ends it's always the beginning of a new pursuit of another heart for the Lotd and we must be ready to learn how to approach different people.

Thanks for sharing Jack, your thoughts made me think about outreach and the kind of giftings that each of us have as we speak to different individuals. Just us men in M3 have a wide variety of backgrounds making each one that encourages a very real and understandable personality.
DeleteJack, I'm so inspired by your heart for service and for being love... It is no small amount of effort and perseverance to open yourself and your time for your brothers, which I see time anytime again... What a great model of servant leadership!
DeleteGood insights into differing personalities Jack and how we need to relate to them.
DeleteJack what blessing you are thank you for opening up your home.

ReplyDeleteIn setting the rightful example I agree in lifting up people that are placed in our charge.
This is a factor in our everyday lives and we can lift up the people that are not just proteges, but also the people that are broken or bent by life's trials or the lies of the enemy.
As I look back on these days of encouraging there was a spark in my brain to disassemble the work encourage. First where we may be lacking in courage we as a team and as brother instill and impute courage into each other. Because otherwise it would be easy to lose hope and let the waterfall drown us away. I also take heed to the sports analogy that we lift another brother up (with the appropriate method) in all circumstances positive and negative.

Yes Gary- Encourage- May we be used of God to put courage in to people. He is using you!
DeleteGary, your cheerful disposition and how you intentionally seek to fellowship is such a great gift. You are an opening for others to see God's love through you. It is great growing with you!
ReplyDelete1. What spoke to me today is Dave G's comment "We can’t dodge our responsibility to speak into the lives of others when uncomfortable truth is needed to be said, such as having to admonish someone who is idle or lazy." Like Roger said above, I always interpreted encouraging as something that leaves both the giver and the receiver feeling positive... All blue skies and rainbows. However, it is enlightening to see encouragement as also being tough love. Please encourage me brothers when I'm idle and/or lazy in the things of the Lord and I will do the same for you.

Daniel, Thank you for the ministries you do at New Life Chicago. Your service is a model to many of us and will be to the proteges that join. May God to richly bless you as you continue to serve and worship Our Lord with even greater gladness (Ps 100:2).
DeleteBless you Daniel! Right on words.
Delete1) Encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.” Heb.3:13.
ReplyDeleteThe world is constantly bombarding us with its deceptive messages and lies. It is constantly lulling and enticing us to compromise just a little. Heb. 3:13 warns that the subtle hardening of our hearts toward God by the sly, deceitfulness of sin (in and around us) can occur even today. But God's remedy to prevent that hardening from taking root is ENCOURAGING EACH OTHER DAILY in God's Word. We keep our hearts encouraged in God as we feed on God's Word ourselves, and by what others share with us from their feeding in God's Word. The M3 Blog has been such an encouragement, as Dave G. is sharing what he has learned from God's Word with us. Through MP3, we are actually, really encouraging those we share our verses with especially after we have meditated and prayed through those verses.
Therefore, Manly Men of M3, I urge you, as we are learning to encourage each other, to realize the encouragement that is also needed by those we love around us who are not part of M3 and to apply God's daily remedy to their lives as well.

Very good words on encouragement Dave.
DeleteAnd you have R Respect. Sunday mornings can be such a tense time. It's perhaps the only time in the week that the whole family ever has to be somewhere early in the day. It's a prime time for the enemy to work his evil mischief.
1. One truth that stood out to me today was learning the expansive definition of what encourage meant within scripture. In light of our mission to grow ourselves and others I think it's important to know that being effective as a teammate and as a mentor doesn't mean only praising and saying the good things, but being willing to say the uncomfortable truths for the good of the person.

Your willingness to speak unpleasant truth with care and concern is courageous, and to those who desire to grow it becomes the revelation of their blind spots, and their opportunities to produce growth in a once weak area.
DeleteThanks Antonio, very succinct summary and great words. I look forward to more revelations of blind spots in my life and to growing with you and the others.
DeleteThat's a good word Kentrayle.
Delete1)“And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.” 1 Th.5:14 ESV. This one stood out to me. Because when Dave was sharing the meaning of the Greek word parakaleo. There were so many applications, so many methods of encouragement. This form of encouragement stands out to me because I with deep desire would be asking you to perform some specific action, that most likely your not doing, or don't know to do, or don't care to do. So with in that scenario I see the vulnerability of the person making the request. I see the humility necessary to accept the bid on the recipients end. I see the passionate care of the brother making the request. What I think I respect about this most, is that it contains what I believe is core in being a man, that is to conquer something difficult because it is vital to our responsibilities. And we are responsible to be assets to one another through the process of becoming like the God we serve Jesus...

Please, never hesitate to call or email me for anything :) God has truly blessed us Manly Men and I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that we will be very fruitful, if we continue to obey and follow the Lord's lead. Oh God, help us men to depend wholly on You and Your ways, please Lord, lead us as a group of men to intercede for our families, church, friends, believers and non-believers alike. Please Lord Jesus, we want to know You more and experience You in ways we never imagined, we want to see You glorified and Highly lifted up :)

DeleteGeorge I know you have a tender heart, but also have had to exercise tough love. Bless you.
Delete1. 1 Th. 2:10-12 ... wow to get a father figure such like Paul was to many. Now days we are to set that same standard of living to one another but also be encouraged by one another. You know I'm not sure where I heard it (on radio or conference etc) but heard that encourage also is giving courage to the one that has fell from it and or just needs that little nudge(different levels of "pat on the back"). This has given me a better understanding , but what good is it if we're doing such but are harsh with words. and instead of being encouraging, we come off as ignorant, negative, and ugly (guilty of that). We, *l* need to remember to keep my heart checked proverbs 4:23 "above all else guard your heart for everything you do flows from it".let God do steering of our hearts to be Christlike man and show the goodness of Jesus that lives in us.

1.I learned that mentoring involves modeling and encouraging. Paul, learning from Jesus himself, sets the example in the way he lived his life and then encouraged others to follow his lead.
