Mon.2.23.15...Being a Godly MENTOR...Observe...part 1

Smash! Ugh! My wife and I in our BC days (Before Children), were on a road trip around Lake Michigan. It was the 4thof July weekend, and we couldn’t find a place of lodging for the night there in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. So we figured that since nearby Canada didn't celebrate our Independence Day, we might find a place to sleep there. As we drove around searching (long before the days of GPS), I made a near fatal, quick left hand turn at the green light. Wham! A car from behind me barreled into my car right behind the driver’s door. When I managed to get out, I said to the driver (I also speak Canadian), “In a hurry?! Rather than apologizing, he yelled at me, “What! You turned right in front of me! This is a one way street!” Ugh! I thought I was in the left turn lane on a two way street. I didn’t notice. I wasn’t paying attention. I wasn’t observant.

I’m sure you could share stories of accidents you’ve been in where you or the other driver weren't paying attention. Distracted driving is a huge problem. Likewise, when we don’t pay attention in relationships huge problems can occur as well. A lot of marital arguments erupt when one spouse doesn’t pay attention to the needs of the other. (Yes, I know, sometimes wives forget that we can’t read their minds- “You should have known that’s what I wanted or meant!” Ugh! R!:) When we don’t pay attention to our spouse, things worse than a car crash can occur. This is also true when we don’t pay attention to our kids, our health, our spiritual life, or our protégés.

Think of your family and the incoming protégés on your team as your flock. We want to be good shepherds of them. Proverbs 27:23 gives us great wisdom- “Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds.” Be observant. This is crucial isn’t it? (That’s why the O of MENTOR stands for Observe.) The good shepherdobserved that one of his sheep was missing and searched for it until he found it (Luke 15:4-5). So how can we apply this to our mentoring, or shepherding of our proteges?

First, let’s observe how sheep in the church go missing. Perhaps, a man is out of sorts with his wife on a Sunday morning. He doesn’t want to be in the same car with her, so he stays home. Since the church isn’t tiny, no oneobserves that the sheep is missing, so no one calls. He used to go to a small group, but he didn’t feel close to the guys and encouraged. When he missed a few times, no one even called him. Eventually, he just stopped going altogether. Then he became hit or miss with Sunday morning church. He justified his slow drifting away by telling himself that he could worship God just as well at home or when he was outside walking the dog. Finally, he went AWOL altogether. This man, who could have become a mighty warrior for God, is now another casualty. The roaring lion, Satan, basically devoured this wandering sheep (1 Pet.5:8).

So how can we help to prevent this? It starts by being observant. If you observe that a protégé on your team didn’t comment on the blog, then kindly contact him that day. (Don’t put it off to see if he blogs the next day.) “Hey, I missed seeing you on the blog yesterday and wanted to make sure you’re alright.” (Sometimes, it might only be that the blog swallowed up his posted work. It’s happened to a few of us. Grrr!) Then listen to what he has to say. Encourage him. Ask how you can pray for him. If you think it warrants such, let other teammates know, so they can all the more encourage and pray for him. Determine “Not on my watch” will I let this man drift away. Be a good shepherd. Perhaps, you could suggest good resources or people to help him. We’ll talk about that soon.

1.-Read John 10:10-15. Then write out John 10:14 on your MP3 card. Now do the Did it. What a great MP3 verse to meditate on, and to praise the Lord for being that knowing and devoted shepherd to me. It’s also great for praying that I would be a knowing (observant) and devoted good shepherd to my family and proteges.

2.-Share one thought from what we covered today.

G? How many individuals or groups did you get to share and enrich from your MP3 card?

R?

E? Remember to give yourself points for the brothers you also wrote words of encouragement under their comments. So if you made 2 phone calls and also posted a note of encouragement under a man's comments, please record it after the letter E this way- 2/1 (for 2 calls and 1 blog note). You deserve credit for being so encouraging!

Remember, if you called up a team member and happened to share your thoughts from your MP3 card, give yourself credit for both G (Sharing God's word from your MP3 card) and E (for the Encouragement call.)

A week ago Sunday, your GDP (Growing Deeper Project) was simply to review the newly updated M3 website. Your proteges need to go to this to fill out and submit their application to join, so I wanted you to review it. (There is a new GPD posted yesterday that you again have all week to complete. It goes right along with our MP3 verse today- Your sheep need to know you and vice versa. You’ll see what I mean. These are necessary to graduate from Coaches Training. And most of you are almost there. Yahoo!)

March is fast approaching. If you need help in recruiting your two proteges, please call me. Make sure to call them. Find out if they've read over the M3 website and what questions they may yet have. Then encourage them to submit their application.
Congrats to our top scorers- Eddie with 17! George and Sam tied for 2nd place with 11 and Jack and Kentrayle tied for third with 10 each. Way to go!

2.- Great lesson today that reminds me that I have to be there for my protégés. In the past in the men's group I would try to contact brothers that would miss group, but would give up soon if I didn't hear back from them in a couple of tries. With my protégés I can't give up, after all if they made the commitment to join M3, they are signing up knowing that all of us mentors are going to be there for them everyday along this journey to get closer to God.

    1. Great Roger. Perseverance is so critical as the more someone is suffering inside, the less apt they are to reply promptly. You are a great coach bro and thanks for all you do for God's people

    2. I definitely saw that happening in the men's group. I'm guilty of it. I'm glad we are refocused Roger. May no one go astray under our watch. Thank you for your willingness to share.

  2. Good Roger! There's a quote I like that we will give to the incoming proteges- "You cannot fail, only quit." We will not give up on those who fall and want to get back up. And each man should be returning calls, otherwise we do have a problem. I've so appreciated the responsiveness of men in M3.

2.Being observant in church is a great way to help keep a brother on track before derailment. Just by asking a simple question hey I didn't see you at church were you there? The church is growing is so much that sometimes it's hard to see everyone. This Sunday I had the opportunity to bring a Spanish speaking gentleman to the Spanish service so I was there at the 930 Spanish service. Or you might wake up later and go to the second service.

A.Thank you Lord Jesus. That we have so many brothers in M3 that are concerned with our welfare. Help us to stay on track. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. We have some great teachers in church. Thanks to the m3 encouragement we can pick up quite a bit of teaching.

    2. We must always be observant and encouraging to our Brothers and sisters as it is our mission to work for God to keep his people on the track of righteousness. I have seen so many people suffering while listening to the Message and it appears no one approaches them to encourage and show them the Love of Jesus. It is our mission to help God to keep our brothers on the righteous track-- to train, mentor, love, and get to know them deeply, so we can be there to encourage them always especially when we see them struggling.

    2. my thoughts on today's blog are: From my observation and opinion people in Church get connected through mentoring and home groups and other activities but as soon as you are out of sight you are out of mind. I won't mention the name of my mentor but as far as a relationship, there is none. When I see him it's always the same thing"We got to get together. I will call you." Well I am still waiting for the call. I have learned that God is the most important relationship I need and any other relation I have if it's there great if it's not than life goes on. My wife on the other hand she takes it a little personal when her so call friends forget about her. I told her God is her father and I am her friend. With that said if you have a relationship with someone don't put them in the out of sight out of mind club. I am pretty sure they are waiting for your call.

    2) I believe to be observant is very important to increase this M3 group. I pray that the Lord helps all of us be observant. The great thing about M3 is that we have become a very tight nit family. When I was going through troubles its was great to know that I got a band of brothers who got my back.

Observing each other shows the reflection of Christ in us as mentors that he is not just attentive to healthy living and needs but the effectiveness of the member that stands as a disciple. This observation so that the individual would come to healing or reconciliation rather than being be a hindrance and needing to be rescued.

    2. Today's message reminds me of a saying I've heard, "people don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." With proteges I'm sure there may be some that are used to dealing with people that talk bigger than they walk. And maybe start off strong but fade away. They need someone who stands the test of time and shows dedication and commitment. Not that it absolves them from showing dedication and commitment. However having two people who are fickle and faintly committed yields no result.

    2) I believe observation is critical to the life of the church. In order to escape the individualized, self centered, islands that await those who think on nothing but themselves. This observation of the good shepherd is directed towards His hand picked, specific disciples. The master mentor Jesus who is the example of us all has left us an example to mimic. That through the bond of love we would intentionally influence our disciples with in the bounds of truth and fueled with power of the Spirit.

    2. As I have been getting older I have noticed that when I read I look like I'm playing the trombone because I'm moving whatever it is that I'm reading to and fro slightly to hit that visual "sweet-spot." Today I am reminded that my own vision is flawed which causes me to need an adaptive piece of equipment to overcome my vision difficulties. What a reminder that I need Jesus as my adaptive equipment to help me to see more clearly...oh give me the eyes of Jesus! Help me Lord to see things as you do!

What a great topic as Mentors we need to have desire to observe our sorrounding like our church, our home, our families etc... definitely got me thinking of keeping our ears to the ground in those areas but also as in scripture to have our hands and feet moving diligently working on advancing God's kingdom.

    1. Ismael, I think there can be a lot of battle action in shepherding. In a sense its like being on guard duty and being ready to rush in and engaging the enemy in hand to hand combat in order to remove their deceptive grip off the heart, or mind or lives of our proteges.

    2. Yes Ismael, this well applies to our families as well, being observant and responding appropriately.

    2. “Determine “Not on my watch” will I let this man drift away. Be a good shepherd.”

Today's lesson shows us that to be good shepherds we need to be observant of the sheep. We need to intentionally get to know them so that we are alert to be there for them when they are in need.
1 Peter 5:2 is a clear instruction that God wants us to be shepherds of His sheep. “ Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; “
God expects us also to have a willing attitude about being a good shepherd to those around us. If we are eager to serve our flock, we will be imitating Christ as He is the “Good Shepherd”. He laid down His life for all His sheep (including us), and we are to follow His perfect example.

The flock needs us to help them, just as we need other men of God to lift us up in prayer on a daily basis :) I do my best to pray for you everyday Daniel :)

    2. John 10:11 says," I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." -- this calls to mind when young David literally risked his life for his sheep (1 Sam 17). Of course, Jesus surpassed David in that He gave up His life on the cross for His sheep (Us :) Wow, just think, the bible encourages us to also be shepherds of God's flock, watching over them! Lord, I admit, I need you to give me a new heart that cares soooooo deeply for the sheep, please Lord, create in me a new heart :)
