Being a godly example
(model) and a good encourager are the two greatest traits of a godly
mentor. Yesterday, we began looking at how the Scriptures use the Greek word “parakaleo” (often translated “encourage”).
We saw that this word is variously translated “to admonish, beg, beseech, call,
console, comfort, exhort, encourage, urge.” Picturesquely, it means to pat
someone on the back at the appropriate level. Let’s discover more ways this
word is used to enable us to be more effective encouragers. (As we did yesterday, we'll bold the English word representing our Greek word "parakaleo.")
Paul loved the new
believers at Thessolonica. He longed to see them again and encourage them. But
because Satan had stopped* his return visit, he had to switch to plan B. “We sent Timothy, who is our
brother and co-worker in God's service in spreading the gospel of Christ, to
strengthen and encourage you in your
faith,” 1 Th.3:2. This is a prime M3 focus. We are seeking to strengthen
and encourage men in their faith- in their MANLY life. (This is only a test:
Quote what MANLY stands for.) Satan seeks to discourage men to give up. So encourage people- Never give up!
(*It's surprising to read that Paul said, "we wanted to come to you- certainly I, Paul, did again and again- but Satan stopped us." 1 Th.2:18. How could Satan stop Paul, who cast out demons and had huge answers to prayer from the almighty God of the universe? It's surprising isn't it? But God has so orchestrated things that the battle against the enemy is very real. Casualties occur. Delays and defeats of your prayerful efforts happen at times. Men you recruit may go AWOL. War is like that. But to quote Sir Winston Churchill, "Never give up! Never give up! Never, never, never!)
How can we encourage ourselves and Pros? Pray that they might be
encouraged by the Lord. “May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father,
who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.”
2 Th.2:16-17. That might be a mouth-full of a prayer to remember, but we could
simply pray for others, “May our Lord, who loves you, encourage and strengthen you.”
God answers prayers for encouragement or comfort. After going
through a very tough time, Paul wrote, “For when we came into Macedonia, we had
no rest, but we were harassed at every turn—conflicts on the outside, fears
within. But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, and not only by
his coming but also by the comfort
you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your
ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.” 2 Cor.7:5-7. Our
God is a comforting God. And notice in the above verse that he often uses people to comfort
us. In Paul’s case, it was our hero from the island of Crete, Titus, who brought him God's comfort. May we also
be his vessels of comfort when a brother is going through tough times. May we not
avoid a brother in trouble, but quickly contact him. By the way, if you are
going through a tough time, post it or call a teammate. Since we can’t mind
read, we need to know when you’re downcast or overwhelmed. Even Paul felt that
way. You’re part of a band of brothers. We are devoted to one another in
brotherly love. "No man left behind."
How should we encourage others? Paul wrote, “…correct,
rebuke and encourage--with great
patience and careful instruction.” 2 Tim.4:2. Encouraging others when
they are doing well is enjoyable. But there will be times where we may need to
correct and even rebuke a person. (“Rebuke” means “Stop it!” Jesus rebuked the
storm at sea- Luke 8:24.) But may we do so with great patience and careful
instruction, seasoned with encouragement. If you’re raising children, you know
how vital this is.
But what if the person who is out of line is not my child,
but a man old enough to be my father? Paul tells Timothy what to do- “Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal
to him respectfully as you would to your own father.” 1 Tim.5:1 NLT. Perhaps you might use any of the
following- “I appeal to you with respect as I would my own father. As one to
whom people look up to, please consider the impact you’re having on others. What
a far greater impact for good you could have. You are a better man than this.”
But what if you are the older man and you need to motivate a younger
man to action? Paul was an elder apostle (For the moment, perhaps think of him as a commanding
General). He could have easily commanded others what to do. But
notice what he said to younger Philemon, “although in Christ I could be bold
and order you what to do, yet I appeal to you on the basis of love.” Philemon
v.8-9a. Wow! How loving and wise. No one likes to be told what to do, so Paul
appeals to him on the basis of love. You’ll notice in Paul’s letters how often he
appeals to us to obey out of love for the Lord, who has already done so very
much for us. The wise coach and father will do the same. “Would you please…?” Notice
how even “the commander of Crete,” Titus, was to encourage, not order the young
men. “Similarly, encourage the young
men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is
good.” Titus 2:6-7. Yes, there is a place for commands. We see them in
Scripture. But it’s the wise leader, who chooses to first and foremost influence
people through requests and suggestions rather than through orders. Be light with commands, lavish with encouragement.
1.-What's something that interested you from what we covered today?
2.-Write this abbreviated prayer from 2 Th.2:16-17 on your MP3 card- “May our Lord, who loves you, encourage and strengthen you.” Then pray it for one of the men on your contact list for this week and let him know it via a call, email or text.
3.-R? (Ah, that would include me and the Mrs. I'm glad our tiffs are like a summer storm. Soon the sun is back out shining:) And soon we'll have to blog about how to fight fairly. If you don't ever have conflict in your marriage, that's either wonderful or awful.
4.-E? (Simply put the number of M3 men or prospective proteges that you contacted to encourage via phone call, email or text since you commented on the blog yesterday. Thanks for making the extra effort to do so.)
5.-A?
Israel wrote- Hebrews 3:13 states, "But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness." -- It never ceases to amaze me that in ONE day, our hearts can be hardened by sin's deceitfulness! Just one day! This verse is a great reminder that we need to DAILY - be in the word of God, fellowshipping with other believers, praying together, and flowing in our spiritual gifts :)
Announcements
Tomorrow we will start our friendly team competition. May it spur us only on to love and good deeds. If you miss a day brother, expect some friendly phone calls:) Actually, this is exactly what I want to happen with our new proteges. I don't want any of them to fall between the cracks. There's certainly no way I could keep up with so many people. But if we all are looking out for the flock, that's a powerful thing. God bless you my fellow shepherds!

1.I know by joining this group that God was directing me to it, because of the encouragement that these blogs have helped me.The joy of the Lord is my strength. God hates divorce and so do I. I'm going through a divorce right now, after 32 years of marriage 5 kids and 4 grand kids it's a little tough but with God and the Word made Flesh it's a lot easier. God helps me get through this. I like when Jesus was sleeping in the boat and a great storm came by and the disciples woke him up. They said master don't you care about us we are going to perish. Jesus got up and calm the storms. I often look at life when going through a divorce is a storm of hurricane force.

George. You are right in. Lean in him now more than ever as there is nothing you cannot do through him-- he strengthens us. Call me anytime I'm here for you brother
DeleteGeorge, it was great to meet and talk to you on Sunday. Be assured that I will be praying for you and your family, that you continue faithful and always rely on Him no matter how difficult the situation may be.
DeleteGeorge thanks for the birthday gift! “May the Lord, who loves you, encourage and strengthen you.”
DeleteOver all the years I've known you George, you have always been an encouraging and so generous brother. So glad we can encourage you. See you Thursday.
Delete1. Encouragement comes from the Father but must be transferred by us to protégés.
ReplyDeleteWe must always focus on being a positive influence on others through our example and it must be transparent that it comes from true love for others directly from the heart. As we mentor we must exhibit true encouragement and love from deep within our hearts not just words. We encourage when things are good but also when their actions or words need to be rebuked. Yes, it is encouragement when we rebuke in a caring way, as we show them the need to right the wrong through leadership and Love with great patients.
I ask for prayer and encouragement now as I have become overloaded and it's taking a toll on my health, focus, and marriage-- so brothers I ask for you to pray for me to be calm through Christ, and focused on the Kingdom, and perseverance and strength to focus on the prize. I'm leaning on Jesus right now for strength to persevere

when Moses got overloaded, his father in law gave him some good advice he said delegate some of the work load. Jack if you need any help with anything I'm here for you please don't hesitate to call me.
DeleteJack thank you for your faithfulness to God and thank you for sharing your prayer requests. Be assured that I will be praying for you purposefully that God gives you strength and wisdom to continue strong like you have so far, and that you continue to be a great godly example for all of us.
DeleteJack, Jesus is the best person to lean on during this time. “May the Lord, who loves you, encourage and strengthen you.”
DeleteThanks for sharing where you're at Jack, with the group as well now, so the whole team can lift you up in prayer.
DeleteDear God I thank you for being faithful with us. May You lead Jack to focus on his first ministry (marriage). I failed to do so recently, and it took a toll on me. I could not do anything else right. It affected me in everything I did. I love my wife and I don't want to let her down again. Thank you for sharing your testimony today at men's group. Very powerful. God will continue to use you for His glory.
DeleteJack, awesome sharing at men's group tonight... Great testimony encouraging men to attend conference. Walt Pallozzi said "Jack, have you ever considered being a preacher?"

And that I me purposefully seek out to uplift people around and not shy away when I see situation in which I may need to correct a brother in love.

Delete1. The enemy seeks to discourage men to give up. So encourage people to not give up. Does he ever...there have been a lot of arrows throw at me and my family of the past 72 hours. I was involved in a pretty bad car accident early Saturday morning. Praise the Lord I was not hurt and neither was the other driver. Unfortunately, my cousin, who is a strong believer was in a very serious accident yesterday morning. Multiple internal injuries, multiple surgeries needed, in icu right now. So yes pray and encouragement is huge, because we don't always know what everyone is going through.

1.-What stuck me about today's lesson was I just had the same conversation with my son. Long story short he decided to marry a young lady who has two little boys. She got saved 5 months ago and my son has been saved for at lease 12 years. I told him he has to set an example for the two boys. I told him he needs to show them how much he loves God and how he wants to lead by example so the boys can see that God is important to him. I told him to encourage them in following God and to live a life that is worthy for God. I also told him that the devil will temp him so the boys would see and become discouraged. I told him to be a light for God and don't try to hide in the darkness. God sees all no matter if we think He can't.

Great advice brother, I was just wondering how Matthew was doing. Sounds like he's doing well. God bless you Mike :-)
DeleteGood words Mike! I saw you and Matthew, but didn't get a chance to talk with him after the service. Please pass on my greetings.
DeleteMy has he grown up since being in children's church with me! I will pray for his full devotion to Jesus.
1) I find it very interesting that Paul's advise on confronting difficult topics was to, when possible not attack the ego; but to allow respect to become the buffer that softens the impact of a truth that exposes ugliness in the life of the recipient. Paul preferred to lead with softness but when necessary with sternness. When submission to the scriptures are rejected it is ultimately the authority of God that is being rebelled against, weather the words come from a child or an elder. May we remain pliable so that we allow others to encourage us, and may we consider our audience so that our words are fitting to the person and situation.

ReplyDelete1) I love that GOD encourage us. I mean the GOD of the universe takes time to encourage us. Our GOD is an awesome GOD. I like when the scripture points out the close relationship GOD wants to have with us. He is not miles away from us, he is actually right there with us.

But when we are engage against strong opposition, it can be like being in a terrible storm at sea. That encouragement may be so needed to help us to keep on holding on lest we slip and loose our grip and sink down under the waves.
ReplyDeleteHere are some interesting points to consider from a radio program called “Living on the Edge”
The message was titled: “How to be an Awesome Encourager”.
http://livingontheedge.org/broadcast/how-to-become-an-awesome-encourager-part-2/daily-radio#.VNrVS_nF-Gw
“If you want to be an awesome encourager, first, you need to remember that people are hurting far more than you know, and far more than they show.”
“Second, we need to remember that you have far more to offer than you know, and far more to offer than you show. “
“The third reminder is: Encouragement helps others take the next step they couldn’t take on their own, and allows them to become more like Christ.”

DeleteDave, I enjoyed reading the transcript. Thank you for sharing.
Delete1. What I found interesting on today's blog is that God demonstrates yet again his wisdom and how as children of his, he is in tune with our needs. Though we have of course the power of prayer and of the word, God recognizes us as still being physical beings which sometimes we could use a physical presence sent by him to be comforted and encouraged. I also like how God always has our back up plan even we aren't aware that the enemy is intending to attack or sabotage our plans.

1. Many of the instructions that Paul gave to his proteges where similar, however, there are slight differences in each epistle that give clues to the particularization of Paul's knowledge of his proteges. The big take away is that Paul knew how to encourage those that he mentored in a way that appealed to each of them as individuals, rather than a "cookie-cutter", "One size fits all" approach!

ReplyDeleteTo give up might seem easy for those who are in the middle of a storm and things appear quite bleak and terrible, but this is why we are here and present for each other. The encouragement helps make us unstoppable and enablement to further encourage others. Weather we rebuke console or direct there is always a method in guiding the way of another brother and aiding in his footsteps and his growing relationship with Christ.

We read in Daniel earlier in our M3 teachings that demonic spirits/angels may hold up answers to our prayers, and here I get the sense that satan orchestrated a way that Paul could not physically reunite with his friends/brothers. This verse serves as another reminder that I or "We" men MUST pray Attack prayers daily!
