Fri.3.27.15 The Sequel to Jonah

Great Sequels

Some movies end demanding a sequel. For example, you can't leave Han Solo frozen in carbonite. There just has to be a sequel!

Plus, you can't let the evil Emperor live on without judgment falling upon him. Deep down in our souls, we long to see such evil villains get what's coming to them. We learned that imprecatory prayers gave voice to that desire to see judgment befall the evil. But we also know we are not to take revenge, but leave room for God's wrath. For it is written; "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. Rom.12:19. But "how long O Lord?" That has been the cry of saints throughout the ages that have suffered under evil people.

Jonah felt that way. He waited outside the city of Nineveh, hoping to see God's wrath fall upon those evil people. It's as if he had picked out a seat in the theater, eager to see an explosive ending to the movie. But he was really ticked off at how it ended well for the wicked and wanted more than his money back. He wanted to die! "That's not how the movie should end! There needs to be a sequel!" Did you know there is a sequel, but Jonah never saw it? It hasn't done very well at the box office. Few have gone to see it, even though it's been out for a long time. It's the sequel to the book of Jonah and it's called Nahum. (Maybe it would have done better with a better title. Feel free to re-title it, since Bible book titles were not inspired by God. The Lord would have given so much better titles than what we're left with- Leviticus? Numbers? Deuteronomy? Really?:)

If you have a study Bible, it probably gives you some helpful background information on Nahum. We've already discovered previously that learning the historical context of a book is a BIG Bible Interpretation Guideline.

1. So name one thing that you learned about the book of Nahum from your study Bible or from going to Biblehub.com (To find background info using Biblehub.com, just type in a verse from the the book you want to study, such as Nahum 1:1 and hit enter. Then about an inch under the search bar in the middle, you'll see the word- Strong's. Just under Strong's, you'll see a hard to see icon that looks like a book. Click that Bible Book Summary icon and it will take you to the riches.)

Now read chapter 1 of Nahum. It well summarizes this 3 chapter long book. (If you have time, feel free to read all of it.)

We've learned before that a good way to get a handle on a passage is to title it. Since Nahum isn't a very captivating title, let's re-name it. If it was a movie, let's give it a catchy title that would also catch the essence of the book. How about "DOOMED!"? Imagine how many more people would read Nahum if they came across it as a book in the Bible called "DOOMED!" (Even boys would want to read it. "Daddy, can I please read DOOMED?  I know it's rated R for excessive violence, but I promise I won't act it out.":)

2.-Write one verse or phrase from Nahum chapter 1 that catches your attention and write it on your MP3 card and share it with us and others. Thanks! Write Did it if you also gave yourself points on  the board. I know, it's a new habit and a few yet need a reminder. While on  the Scoreboard, click the Contacts tab at the bottom and post the names of your two prayer partners. Thanks for not making me look 'em up and fill them in.

Here's another BIG Bible Interpretation Guideline- Bible prophecies often expand in their fulfillment. Think of a cone < of greater fulfillment. The prophecy could have a small fulfillment soon after it was given, but it would have greater fulfillments often much later in history. Take Nahum 1:15 as an example- "Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news"
This immediately referred to a messenger who would bring the good news to the Israelites, who had been oppressed by Nineveh, that it had been destroyed. No more would the wicked invade them. But Paul also picks that verse up and applies it to people who preach the good news. See Rom.10:15. And since we know that Christ is the ultimate hero in Scripture, we can see Nahum 1:15 foreshadowing His coming to bring the good news message to Israel. This prophecy will expand yet further when Christ returns a second time and his feet rest on the Mt of Olives (Zech.14:4). Zechariah 14 describes a future day when Messiah will come back and destroy Israel's enemies and bring peace, not just to Israel, but to the entire world! What an expansion of good news from Nahum's day!

It's a beautiful thing to see the way that several of you are proving to be great coaches of encouragement to our Pros. Look over this week's GREAT Scoreboard and see for yourself.

Our Pros are doing well in becoming Unstoppable in God's word. TYF! (Thank You Father!) So that they don't feel left out from what you're reading on the blog, we will have them join us starting Monday for a mini-series on apologetics called "What Would You Say to That?"-responding to objections people bring against your Christian faith or the call to salvation. (Get your popcorn- you'll get to watch mini-movies as well as dive in to some vital Scriptures. Will the movies be better than seeing Han Solo in carbonite? You'll see:)

  1. 1. To me it was important to see that even though God did spare Nineveh of destruction because they turned to Him in the time of Jonah, eventually they went back to their own ways and they were destroyed as the prophet Nahum predicted. And Judah received peace and deliverance.
-This to me shows how evil and wicked our human nature is. Even though they were spared eventually they forgot what God had done and turned to their own wicked paths. This continues to be true today in all of us. Many times have I received great blessings and have been spared severe consequences yet some how I eventually forget that and continue to fall short of the glory of God. If I am not in the Word daily and in fellowship with other believers, I am much weaker and will fall for sure.
-The other important lesson that I learned was that no matter how big the nation (Assyria) or the problem that we may be facing, God is still in control. He promises to be our refuge in time of trouble.
    2. Did it. Nahum1:7 "The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. "

  2. 1. God's full character and attributes are beyond human comprehension. It's difficult for us to wrap our minds around the notion that God is love, 1 John 4:8b "because God is love" but that He's also a consuming fire, Hebrews 12:29 “God is a consuming fire.” God's judgments are perfect, 1 Peter 2:23b "Instead, he (Jesus) entrusted himself to him (God the Father) who judges justly"

Exodus 33:19b "I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion."

God is telling us the evil forces present in the world are deterrence to our spiritual development and harden's our heart. 5. 1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

I must confess that in my past i was a party animal that was constantly tempted with drugs and alcohol. At the age of 21 I became a heroin addict. When i surrendered and gave my life to Christ, i made a promise to Him and my family that i would never use drugs again. I started going to recovery meetings where i found other addicts who have found a way out of addiction. I know that God guided me there. I now have 5 years and 4 months clean. I pray daily and thank God throughout the day for rescuing me from my self made hell. I go to meetings regularly and help other addicts find a new way to live. Thank you Jesus for delivering me from the Lions den and giving me another chance at Life!

  7. 1- Nahun 1:3 The Lord is slow to anger but great in power, the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are dust of His feet. The first sentence is also read as "The lord is slow to anger and quick to love." It is funny how you share things with people in your life and than you find the answers you gave to them also comes from the bible. I was sharing with my co-worker the same thing I just posted. As well as Nahum 1:2.

    1 Corinthians 10:9
And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.
I felt this verse speaking to me today. There are a few people I work with that are always grumbling about something, nothing is ever going right. It’s easy for me to join in and grumble along with them even when I should know better. I need to stop doing that and remind them of the things to be thankful for like having the jobs we are grumbling about. When we were moving our office a few months ago I met a man from the moving company that had a great attitude. There were some issues with the move and while other people were complaining I don’t think he said one negative thing. When I commented on his attitude he joked that they called him sunshine because he always keeps a good attitude. Thinking about it now I wish I would have asked him about his relationship with God, I like to think that that’s what influenced his attitude.

    2. Very good George! I have often prayed for my family, among other things, that we would have A+ attitudes. I've reminded them for years that your attitude will determine how high you will fly or how low you will go. It's one thing to bite your lip, it's another thing to be sunshine to others. Keep shining for him!

  9. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭10‬:‭12-13‬ NIV)

We are always at risk of falling back, and yes I have been tempted many times to do so because of the everyday battles I go thru.

  10. 1) I guess something that I got from Nahum was the people went back to their evil ways after God had already told them to change. Its also shows that God is merciful but his will shall be done. It's never good to play with God. I believe his will is always best we may not like it at first, but if we do what he commands us to do we shall enjoy the life he has set for us.

    2) Nahum 1:3 (NIV)
The Lord is slow to anger but great in power; the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.

  11. 1. So name one thing that you learned about the book of Nahum from your study Bible …
I learned that Nahum may have been written approximately 663-612 B.C based on the destruction of Thebes being mentioned, and not it's rebuilding. That would place the writing during the time of King Manasseh, one of the most evil kings in Judah’s long history. So the times in Judah were rapidly darkening as the nation was turning way from God. Nahum would have brought some hope to Judah about the destruction of Assyria which had been a very powerful, cruel oppressor.

    2) MP3 chosen verse: Nahum 1:3a >
The Lord is slow to anger and great in power,
And the Lord will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.

God must get offended and irritated by sin, evil and wickedness. His perfect holiness, and justice demands that satisfaction be made. By His grace, compassion and mercy, God controls His righteous anger to allow a set time for repentance and reconciliation to be offered through His Son to the guilty offenders. There is a limit, after which - justice will be served as God's Holy wrath is filled.

  12. 1. Just like the Israelites continued to go back and forth in faith, so too did the people of Nineveh as they returned to their evil ways. Nahum came to Nineveh 120 years after Jonah to pronounce the final warning and judgement upon them. Nahum warns of judgement and describes the awesome power of God. He goes on to to encourage a hope for the Southern Kingdom because of the coming judgement of Nineveh. "Thus The Lord says, tough they are at full strength and likewise many, even so, they will be cut off and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no longer"
2." The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, he knows those who take refuge in him." Nahum 1:7

I like fast food a lot and I know it’s wrong to eat it as much as I do. This verse says that there is temptation, but not to the point that we can’t overcome it. That’s the promise. I should really control my urges and eat home cooked food. If I pray and believe that God will help me control those urges to splurge on fast food, I can do it.

    3. Keep at it Chuy. Keep up on your blogging one day at a time. It's good that you identified one area were you know you should live better at. As you grow in the Lord, God will gradually reveal many sinful areas in your life also. We all have them. If the Lord was to reveal our sinful areas all at once to you or me, we would feel utterly crushed by our sinfulness. But as a great loving Heavenly Father, He reveals them a little at a time so that we can identify them, and work on them and live in victory over them. This process is called sanctification were God makes our lives gradually more holier and more godly. It takes getting into the Word of God, like you are doing in M3. As you seek to learn and apply and obey God's instructions in His Word you are growing in spiritual maturity and Christ likeness.

I know I get tempted all the time and fall most of the time. I've realized god open ways for me to flee from them but I would not listen to them. I started reading his word more and praying. 18. 1. This first chapter of Nahum reminded me so much of Galatians 6:7 when it says, "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh, will from the flesh, reap destruction, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life." God brought down judgement on His own people of Israel when they turned from Him and He brings down judgement on any nation that are His enemies as well. Our great nation, the USA is no exception and is not exempt from God's judgement. May we repent as a nation!
