(Note: This lesson is for Coaches. Pros, please start on Day 2.
See the emails I have sent you on Sunday and again this morning. Thanks!)
Imagine that you are a detective questioning a suspect of a crime. If you’re old enough to remember Dragnet, Sergeant Joe Friday was
famous for this line, “Just the facts ma’am. Just the facts.” He went after the
facts to solve the crime. That’s what we’re going to do today with the suspect, Jonah. We’re going to
get the F.A.C.T.S. We’ll gather Fast
facts, Ask questions, Check for key words for clues, Title our findings, and Summarize our findings. To lighten your load, I'll give
you an example of how to do this. You'll see that I've gathered some F.A.C.T.S. already for us. But I’m handing over the Asking of the questions to you. So let's read through all of chapter 1 now and gather our F.A.C.T.S.-
Fast facts (Note the crime scene. What do
you notice?)
I noted the fact that the sea grew worse and worse because
of Jonah’s crime (He committed a felony of flagrant disobedience against the direct order of his King!) I underlined these phrases about the storm in my Bible and would ask
you to do the same. It helps you to see the scene well.
a violent storm arose v.4
The sea was getting rougher and rougher v.11
The sea grew even wilder than before v.13
(Thus, I deduced that God has a way of making life get rougher and rougher for the wayward. Just ask Jonah or the prodigal son. "Brilliant deduction Holmes!")
(Thus, I deduced that God has a way of making life get rougher and rougher for the wayward. Just ask Jonah or the prodigal son. "Brilliant deduction Holmes!")
I noted the fact that Jonah would rather die than have the ship turn back so he could obey God. V.12. (This crime suspect has got some real death wish issues!)
I noticed the fact that the sailors tried to row back to land, so evidently they had not traveled far from land when this great storm occurred (see v.13).
I noted the fact that Jonah ran from God's plan, but ran into God's alternate painful plan- being swallowed by a great fish God had prepared. That brings to mind a great quote- "You may get what you want, but you may not want what you get."
Ask Questions (Interrogate the witnesses-
Who, what, where, when, how, why?)
Here is where I want you today to jot down questions that
come to mind as you look over the crime scene of this chapter.
Check for Key words (Let's check for finger
prints and clues. The Author leaves clues. It's as if he wants us to discover things:)
The word “great” is used in my NIV Bible 4x and "greatly" once. Please circle
these words in your Bible-(Note: If you are new to marking your Bible, do not use a highlighter or felt tip marker. It will bleed through the page. Ugh! Yes, I learned that the hard way.)
Great
city v.2; great wind on
the sea v.4. great
storm v.12; the men greatly
feared the Lord v.16; great
fish v.17. (Great is our Lord and greatly to be honored and obeyed.)
I also noted how the crime story is filled with turns of events. The words "but" or "instead" are used a few different times, which I underlined. God commands, BUT Jonah flees. v3. But God sent a raging storm. BUT Jonah went below deck and slept v.5. Jonah tells the sailors to throw him overboard, But INSTEAD, they tried to row for shore v.13. Finally they throw him overboard to drown, BUT the Lord provided a great fish to give Jonah another opportunity to reconsider. v.17.

Title the passage (Let's title our CSI report)
Go! No! Woe!
(I noticed how God told Jonah to "Go" to Nineveh; but by
his actions, he clearly was saying, "No I won’t go!" Then I said “Woe!” when I saw the crime scene and the
Woe that came upon Jonah, cargo and crew.)
Summarize the passage (Let's summarize our CSI report in seven words or less. This shows that we know the big picture of the crime scene.)
Jonah’s disobedience brought disaster.
1.-Ask questions! Who, what, where, when, why, how. Share some of the questions that came to mind as you investigated your way through Jonah ch.1.
2.-Write on your MP3 card- "Will not Assyria rule over them because they refuse to repent?" Hosea 10:5. Then do the "Did it.)
Hosea was a contemporary prophet of Jonah. Just as a great fish ruled over Jonah because he refused to repent, the great kingdom of Assyria (in which Nineveh was located) would rule over the Israelites about 30 years later because they refused to repent. We could paraphrase this verse- "Will not sin and Satan rule over the rebellious because they refuse to repent?" May this prompt us to pray for and share with those in rebellion to God. Perhaps you remember being unrepentant and can now see how sin was ruling over you. Don't forget our commission- "To open their eyes, to turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins" Acts 26:18.
Don't forget to go to the Resources tab to get to the GREAT scoreboard and post your scores. Hopefully, all the kinks are out of it now.

Here’s a summary of our BIG Bible Interpreting Guidelines we've discovered so far-
Ask
questions!
Give
careful consideration to what you read.
The
purpose of rightly interpreting the Bible is to rightly obey it.
The
Bible is the best interpreter of itself. So compare scripture with Scripture.
Being
prayerful is commendable but it is not a dependable replacement for the careful
study of Scripture.
It’s
imperative that we know what kind of literature we are reading to interpret it
and apply it correctly.
Knowing
the background to what we are reading helps us better understand the passage.
Commentaries and online resources can help us with such.
Knowing
the mood of the author helps you better understand his message.
The
apostles often quoted the OT from the Greek version of it called the
Septuagint; thus don't be surprised that it doesn't line up exactly with our OT
translated from the Hebrew. Plus, they paraphrased at times, all under the
inspiration of God.
Since
the Bible is God’s perfect word, if you think you’ve found an error in the
Bible, it’s your error, not God’s! Many people think they’ve found a
contradiction, when it may only be a contrasting statement, not a contradictory
statement.
“Humbly
accept the word” We don’t stand in judgment on it, it stands in judgment on us.
Keep in
mind that the grand theme of the Bible is Jesus.
Don’t
spiritualize the Scriptures. Those who spiritualize tell spiritual
lies. Don’t read spiritual hidden meanings about Jesus into everything.
The
plain thing is the main thing. And the main thing is the plain thing.
Recognize
the progress of revelation. The NT supersedes the OT.
Understand
Hebrew poetry- the second line gives insight into the first line.
The
context of a word determines its meaning. A text without a context is a
pretext.
Words
also need to be understood in their historical context.
Interpret
difficult verses in light of clear ones.
Look for repeated words or phrases to help you discover what the author is emphasizing. The main thing is the plain thing.
Look for repeated words or phrases to help you discover what the author is emphasizing. The main thing is the plain thing.
Look for
major Bible themes as you read.
God is
the true hero of the book.
The Key Components of Accurate Bible Study
1.-Observation- Get the F.A.C.T.S. like a CSI detective- Fast facts- Ask questions, Check for key words, Title and Summarize your report.
1.- WHO- The main character in this passage of scripture is Jonah.
ReplyDeleteWHERE- The story takes place on a ship in the middle of a great storm that God sent.
WHEN - This takes place in Israel where Jonah lived during the 8th century BC during the reign of King Jeroboam.
WHY - All of this took place because of his dissobedience. Jonah was told to go to Nineveh to talk about God but instead out of fear he attempts to escape His presence and tries to travel to Tarshish.
HOW- When the people on the ship realize that the storm is beacause of Jonah's disobedience, they threw him overboard and the storm calmed down. But God also saves Jonah by having him swallowed by a big fish where he remains for three days.
May we be always obedient to God's voice so that we will not have to go through such difficult times as Jonah did.
2.- Did it
Right on Roger! Keep up the pace.
DeleteWHO: the prophet Jonah son of Amittai.
ReplyDeleteWHAT: he was AFRAID & SELFISH towards the purpose of the lord.
WHERE: sailed to tarshish to flee from the lord.
WHEN: ????????
WHY & HOW: the prophet Jonah knew what he was facing going to Nineveh, but his fear and selfishness contradicted the lords promise and sailed in a different direction which caused for others to get affected by his wrong doings. The others tried to find a solution even knowing that Jonah was innocent, which eventually ended up with them throwing Jonah over board and ending up in a fish's belly. Ultimately getting an opportunity to fulfill gods purpose and will.
2- DONE
Great Job deducting and sifting for the answers. Makes you dig and really gain something from the passage.
Delete1. a. Jonah disobeyed God
ReplyDeleteb. Violent storm arose
c. Sailors prayed in vain to their gods
d. Sailors sought solution through human efforts
e. Jonah slept, either oblivious to storm or ignoring it
f. Captain sought spiritual help from Jonah
g. Sailors sought person responsible and cast lots (today's equivalent to rolling dice)
h. Jonah revealed to be the cause
i. Sailors interrogated Jonah
j. Jonah confessed
k. Sailors sought Jonah's counsel
l. Jonah recommended suicide by crew members
m. Sailors reluctant, attempted solution through human strength/efforts
n. Sailors prayed to the LORD, pleaded for their lives & forgiveness for unwillingly tossing Jonah off ship
o. Storm calmed, sailors feared/reverenced the LORD, they sacrificed & made vows/promises to God
p. The LORD's rescue plan provided a huge fish, Jonah was swallowed & spent 3 days & nights in the belly of the fish
2. Did it :-)
Qrstuvwxyandz. : ) good insight brother Robert!
DeleteASK:
ReplyDeleteWhy does the Lord provide a great fish to swallow Jonah?
Usually when I think of provision I think of something positive. But God can use unusual things to get our attention and build our faith. He did it will me, using a breakup to break me down. Seems that God's providing of the great fish did have some good as Jonah could have died in the great storm. God's provision seems to pave the way for Jonah's repentance.
Also, why three days and three nights? Reference to Jesus?
In verse 5 and 6, Jonah fell asleep in the boat while the storm was happening. This reminds me of when Jesus fell asleep while a great storm was raging and to calm it He spoke to it and the storm stopped.
2. Done.
Brother Eddie, I recently heard the following quote "Sometimes God has to break our backs to bend our knees" (Author unknown, to me) I have to confess that I'm in need of a spinal column transplant, lol :-D
Delete1Who: God and Jonah
ReplyDeleteWhat: What happens when you disobey God.
Where: This took place on a ship with a raging storm.
When: BC Jesus Christ uses the story of Jonah In Matthew 12:40
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Why: He was not willing to obey but rather chose to run from God.
How: God got him back to his original plan by using a great fish.
2.Did it.
God is good all the time and all the time God is Good. I prefer to chance the word good to great. But the saying is what it is. Keep your head up All things are possible through Christ.
DeleteBrother George, great job! Keep up the good works :-)
ReplyDelete1) 2nd day. Joshua 1:8 calls for us to meditate on God's Law 24/7, follow His Word as is, then you will be prosperous and successful. Q. What excuses do you think people might give for skipping this daily priority for success? Wow, Many; who needs the bible, I work hard, only I can make myself successful, only words, not true, wrote centuries ago no meaning now, propaganda, no God, don't need it, a fiction story, lies, hatred for God........ Sad, but true, many in this world know of no existence of our God and Lord Savior or if they know don't care to better know Him. Lord strengthen me in your word to better serve you and enable me to evangelize the Good Word. 2) Did it
ReplyDeleteYes brother, may the good Lord Almighty use you for his kingdom and enable you to do such great works for God's kingdom.
DeleteExcuses believers might use, I pray all the time, God knows my heart, later, tomorrow, go to church on Sunday, attend bible study, God loves me as I am, I read the whole bible already not necessary, no time, read when I feel convicted, feeling good don't need too, running late, tired.....many!
ReplyDeleteVery good Armando! So glad you are with us!
ReplyDeleteQuestions:
ReplyDeleteWhy did God chose Jonah? God knows whenever He sends someone to speak in His name most people will listen. For the most part people will listen to their own kind.
What did God want Jonah to did? He wanted Jonah to plant the seeds so He could cultivate them.
Where did God want Jonah to go? To the great City of Nineveh and preach against sin.
Who did God want Jonah to speak to? The Nineveh people.
When did God want Jonah to start His request? As soon as He told him to go to the town and preach.
How was God going to use Jonah? In a mighty way.

John you are at the right place, here with M3 you will be challenged to stay in the Word and learn many valuable tools that will help your growth in God.
DeleteKeep pushing aside those excuses and keep pushing forward into the scripture John. God has so much to show you and to bless you with.
Delete1.-Ask questions! Who, what, where, when, why, how. Share some of the questions that came to mind as you investigated your way through Jonah ch.1.
ReplyDeleteWho- Who is involved? God, Jonah , (a prophet of God), The Ninevites,
the sailors on the ship, the great fish.
- Who where the Ninevites?
What- What was the cause of the events?
- The judgment and mercy of God on the Ninevites.
- The disobedience of Jonah to warn the Ninevites of God's
judgments
- Jonah's choice on how he chose to flee from God's call.
When – When did these events happen? (Who were the kings of Israel and
Judah when this happened?)
Why – Why would God be concerned about judging and destroying the
Ninevites (another gentile nation)?
- Why did Jonah refuse to obey the Lord?
- Why did God rescue Jonah?
- Why did God use a great fish to rescue Jonah?
How - How could Jonah survive in the stomach of a great fish?
2) Did It
Realized I forgot the question Where.
DeleteWhere was Jonah when he received God's orders?
Where is Ninevah?
Where is Tarshish?
Thanks again for opening up your home to so many of us again Jack. Also thanks for those frequent encouraging scriptures you text.
Delete1.Who-- Jonah son of Amittai and God
ReplyDeleteWhere--at sea on the way to Tarshish instead of Nineveh
When-- BC. How does this relate to Jesus?
Why---because of Jonah's disobedience to the Lord, as he didn't trust fully in the Lord to protect him if he went to Tarshish. His faith was tested and he failed miserably--but God was still faithful and merciful.
Why did he lose faith in the Lord
How--how did God use him after saving Jonah?
How did he survive in a whale?

1. Q. What excuses do you think people might give for skipping this daily priority for success?
ReplyDeleteA. Some reasons are not enough time in the day because of work or taking care of family. It is tough for some of us because we schedule things so we can live physically but forget about living spiritually which should be given priority.
2. Did it
"living spiritually which should be given priority." - You are right on target Chuy.
Delete1) Who? Jonah, God, crew members, ninivites, giant fish.
ReplyDeleteWhat? Jonah was to deliver a message to the Ninivites on behalf of God. Ninivah was a mortal enemy of Israel and Jonah feared Gods mercy falling on them if they were to repent at His threat. This was the capital of Assyria.
When? 700 bc
Why is this important? Its one story of our Gods willingness to patiently work with an imperfect man in order to reach an undeserving people with bad news in order to stir about godly sorrow and deliver good news. In many ways its our story.
2) Did it.
brother Tony, I love your "why is this important?" answer! In many ways, its our story -- I agree :)
Delete1) WHAT did the men Vow to God? V.16
ReplyDeleteWHY did Jonah wait for a storm to finally admit he was wrong?
HOW can our disobedience put people in danger?
Amazing to know that God used this storm to bring the sailors to fear Him V.16
16 At this the men greatly feared the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows to him.
2) DID IT
I marveled at the point you mentioned here thanks. God still had the message for these sailors and was able to have them proclaim His name even while he wanted Jonah's attention. ISA 55:8-9 might sound familiar.
Delete1.-What excuses do you think people might give for skipping this daily priority for success?
ReplyDeleteTwo excuses that people use are being too busy and forgetting. Both seem like good excuses at first, but they prove to be, more or less, a show of a lack of discipline or a lack of prioritization. Ultimately, one must decide what is important (Example: For some reason, we never seem too busy for small things like playing games and watching tv because we consider them important to us). When you prioritize things that are TRULY important, you usually find that you are able to make time for it if you try. To be fully honest, I have great difficulty being disciplined, and I also struggle daily with procrastination and concentrating due to ADD. As a result, I know that prioritizing is easier said than done. However, it is most certainly not impossible, and it is necessary for any kind of growth or learning.
2.- Write out Joshua 1:8 on your 3x5 MP3 card,(or use a sheet of paper, or smart phone app.) and seek to review it during your day. Once you've written it out, simply write- "Did it" in your "Enter Your Comment" under your answer for #1. Seek to share your MP3 verse- Joh.1:8 with other people until you blog again tomorrow. Then tomorrow, you will be giving yourself credit for doing so.

DeleteGreat words and insight Alex! You got a double whammy today, our Men's bible study and then M3 lesson. Woo Hoo..... you are on the fast track to spiritual growth. Keep absorbing the Word of God and soon enough, it will come out as Wisdom in your life :)
Delete1.-What excuses do you think people might give for skipping this daily priority for success? I would say being too busy. At least that's the excuse I would always use. I always knew in my heart though that I was lieing to myself. I thought to myself I have time for friends. Why can't I have time for god? Isn't god my friend? That's what helped me realize I have time.

1.-God is not a legalist, so does He want us to be daily in his word?
ReplyDeleteYes, God wants us in His word daily, it’s through His word that we get to know Him. Reading it also helps me keep focused on Him and building my relationship with Him.
2.-Psalm 119 is a goldmine on God's word. Thumb through Psalm 119 and pick out one verse or phrase that you like, then simply share it with us.
Psalm 119:133 Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.
Brother George, well said "Yes, God wants us in His word daily, it’s through His word that we get to know Him." Welcome to M3 brother. Looking forward to meeting you :-)
DeleteWhy was Jonah willing to sacrifice his life?
ReplyDeleteThe sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him,
“What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”
12 “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”
Was he setting the stage for Jesus? What else could it be, if it is not about Jesus. I liked that he owned up to his disobedience and was willing to take responsibility for his mistake.
2) did it Hosea 11:5
Thanks Sam, for the questions you posted here. You third question also helpful; there is a great reminder that the message is also application for our lives when we read and study.

ReplyDelete-I noticed that the people on the ship had said to Jonah "What shall we do to you?" rather than 'what shall we do with you?" I ask why for this difference because this likely indicates harm.
-Did Jonah not care that he would rile up the men on the ship for telling them that his disobedience was putting the men in danger?
-Did Jonah contemplate what God was commanding of him or did he immediate go his own way to flee from God
-Was it God's doing that the lot fell to Jonah revealing why he was on the ship
-Why did the men on the ship not comply with Jonah's suggestion to throw him overboard rather than continuing to row out of the storm?

DeleteALSO blessed to serve side to side bro
1.-What excuses do you think people might give for skipping this daily priority for success? Some excuses I think I’ve heard (and maybe even used) are that we are too busy with commitments to family, work, school, friends or sports. If we make and effort we can change that. One thing I’ve tried is eliminating some distractions by deleting games off my phone, now when I’m on the train in the morning I read a daily devotional.

GREAT step in obedience of action.
DeleteHello George, I love the way that you have taken bold action steps to delete the games off your phone and replace that with a daily devotional :) Wow!!! Scripture teaches us to take off the old, unwise, and sinful ways and to put on the New, wise, and godly ways!! Way to go George :) That one action step you did will change your life, if you continue :) so march forward my friend.
DeleteGeorge, welcome to M3 my brother!
Delete1. Q. Why flee to Tarshish?
ReplyDeleteA. On studying found that in those days it was as far west as one can go on the coast.
Also another probability is Jonah wanted to be as far as possible from presence of God... ( :) who we kidding, God is omnipresent)
Why preach against Nineveh?
The people in Nineveh were in wickedness and God wanted the people to come to repentance.
Where? Nineveh and Tarshish
Who was involved? God,Jonah, sailors on the boat, giant fish.
2. Done
Hello Ish, your answers are short and sweet and to the point :)
DeleteTime for my investigation:
ReplyDelete1.- WHO?? - The main characters in order of importance in this passage of scripture is God, the Captain and sailors, and then Jonah.
WHERE?? - The story takes place in Israel, near area named Joppa, then transfers to a ship and ultimately ends in Ninevah
WHEN?? - This takes place in Israel where Jonah lived during the 8th century BC during the reign of King Jeroboam. These events start as soon as God gave Jonah a direct command to go to Ninevah.
WHY?? - this entire story took place because of Jonah's disobedience. Jonah was told to go to Nineveh to preach repentance and to turn to God, but instead out of spite for the Ninevites, he attempted to escape God's presence and tries to travel to Tarshish. Jonah did not want the Ninevites to repent and turn to God. He wanted God to destroy them.
HOW?? - One thing struck me tremendously-- when Jonah decided to disobey God, he went to Joppa and immediately caught a ship to Tarshish. I'm sure in those days, ships did not leave every 2 hours like our planes and trains do nowadays. Jonah must have thought, I have the money to pay for my trip, I caught a boat immediately, and I am accepted on this ship and even have a place to get some sound sleep :) According to Jonah, he may have thought that he was being blessed by God because things were going so deceivingly well. Another thing struck me-- during the rough storm on sea, the captain and sailors started to pray and they woke up Jonah and urged him to pray to his God!! After Jonah confessed it was his disobedience to God, that might be the reason for the storm, they tried to save Jonah's life by first trying to make it to shore, and then they prayed before they did what Jonah told them to do (throw him overboard) and then, the storm calmed down. God then saves Jonah by having him swallowed by a big fish where he remains for three days and 3 nights. Wow, what mercy the Father shows us!!!
Summary of this story: Listen to God the first time He speaks :)
