Mon.3.16.15...Jonah 1:1-3

How Do You Want to be Remembered?

What do you want to accomplish for God before you're dead? Do you want to see people come to know and grow in Christ? To multiply manly men? Ben Franklin quipped, “If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write something worth the reading or do things worth the writing.” Jonah wrote something worth reading and he did things, good and bad, worth the writing. So let’s learn from this man and his book. Let’s read just the beginning of the book today- read Jonah 1:1-3. There’s so much to discover.

Some doubt that Jonah ever lived. They think the story is a whale of a tale. But the greatest historian who ever lived verified the historical person and preaching of Jonah and his being in a great fish for 3 days. Read Mt.12:40-41.

Remember that a key to exploring and discovering great riches in the word is to ask questions. Imagine if you were going to hire someone, you would want to ask questions of him. You would want to get some of your questions answered by doing a background check. As we begin to study the book of Jonah, let’s do a background check on him and also on the land of Israel and Nineveh, where he was commanded to go. Nineveh, in Northern Iraq, was a great city of the mighty Assyria empire. About 60 years after Jonah’s preaching, it even became their capitol city. Our background check will reveal why Jonah did not want to go to Nineveh at all. (The following good article is by Jeremy Myers, was long, so I greatly abbreviated for you. [Who loves ya?]  To read the complete article, go to- http://gracecommentary.com/jonah-historical-background/)

“When studying Scripture, it is critical to gain understanding of the historical background and cultural setting of the book or passage being studied. The most difficult and troubling passages often open their meaning and significance in the most beautiful way when the historical and cultural background of the text is grasped. This is certainly true with the story of Jonah.

Jonah lived and ministered in Israel during the 8th century BC, during the reign of King Jeroboam II (2 Kings 14:23-29). Second Kings 14:25 says that King Jeroboam II “restored the territory of Israel from the entrance of Hamath to the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the Lord God of Israel, which He had spoken through His servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet who was from Gath Hepher” (NKJV). According to this passage, Jonah had prophesied that Israel would expand her boundaries, and under the leadership of the king, the prophecy had been fulfilled.

Off to the east, there was another nation which was also expanding in territory, power, and might. This other nation was Assyria. Like Israel, Assyria was growing in power and influence. By the 9th century BC, Assyria had gained control of the entire Mesopotamian region and was beginning to think about westward expansion toward Israel.http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=tiheco-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0785209905

…As both Israel and Assyria grew in power, both knew that continuing conflict was inevitable.http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=tiheco-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0785250379 Furthermore, the people of Israel knew with certainty that God would not want a nation like Assyria to prosper. Aside from worshiping false gods, Assyria was a wicked and brutal nation. Archaeologists have discovered many Assyrian inscriptions and carved stone slabs from this time period which reveals how the Assyrians treated their enemies. They often flayed the nobles, and draped their skins over piles of corpses. They dismembered enemy soldiers, cutting off their nose and ears and gouging out their eyes while still alive, before finally beheading the soldiers and placing the severed heads on sharpened stakes around the walls of the captured city. Those who were kept alive did not fare much better. Their lower lips were pierced with fish hooks on lines, and they were led back to Nineveh where they were then tortured and killed or sold as slaves.” Jeremy Myers

Those Ninevites were truly wicked and merciless, not deserving of God's mercy. Perhaps Jonah even had relatives who had met such a grizzly fate at the hands of the Ninevites. Now we know why Jonah didn't want to go. Jonah didn't just refuse to go to Nineveh, he sought to go to Tarshish, 2,000 miles in the opposite direction. Check out the good map below. (But that fish looks fishy to me to be such that swallowed Jonah:)
Jonah sought to flee from the presence of the Lord. We know that's impossible. "Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there." Ps.139:7-8. (And as we know, Jonah would make his bed in the depths.)

1.-Was there ever a time you were trying to flee from God and his will for you? Perhaps this was in your BC days, when you started to sense God seeking you to follow Him. Briefly share about such if you don't mind.

2.- Copy down on your MP3 card-  "Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?" Ps.139:7. (This was written by David about 250 years before Jonah.) That verse is a great comfort for those seeking to follow the Lord, but a haunting verse for those seeking to flee from Him.

Let's not be like Jonah, unwilling to tell undeserving sinners the pardoning message of the Lord. Please look for opportunities to at least pass out some Greatest mini-movies cards. They reveal the greatest person and love of all.

Coaches, this is the time we have been waiting for- go out of your way to give encouragement to our new team members every day.

  1. 1.- For many years as a believer I was content with just going to church on Sundays an occasional Bible study and or a potluck dinner. I did not listen to God telling me that He wanted more from me. Whenever I would hear him telling me to share the Good News I would just rationalize that that was something that the Church staff should do.
It wasn't until I started attending a New Life church that I really felt convicted of my passivity and started to get more involved in the mission and realized the great responsibility that God had given me. How rewarding it has been to be active for Him.

  3. 1- well most of my 20's and early 30's I had a bad drinking problem and I always knew that the father, the son, and the holy spirit was trying to catch my attention on gods will but I didn't care for it because I wanted to run my own will and I just payed attention to things. I always ran away but never gave myself an opportunity to trust and believe. God has helped me open my heart to his will.

  4. 1. Jonah 1:3a "But __________ ran away from the Lord" (Insert my name)
I ran, I run and will continue to run away from the Lord! The sad truth is that we all have an inborn inclination to run from the Lord. We want to know God's will for our lives & in His mercies he may decide to disclose His plans and answer our prayers. And what do we do? Thanks, but no thanks God! I don't like, agree and/or understand them, so I'll reject them and go my own way! I can see a lot of myself in Jonah.

I ran from the Lord at an early age and suffered the consequences, but by God's amazing grace I'm redeemed.

  7. 1. I always feared The Lord and in my BC days I thought I could hide from sinning against him. If I became consumed with other things it will go away and he will forgive me. It never was so, as I became Ill due to the guilt and shame if my sins. But our Father redeemed me as he got ahold of me and rescued me-- he showed me what his will was for me and I opened my heart to follow Jesus and said use me and I'm never going back. Thx Lord

  8. !- I let satan get into my head last year. I left New Life Community Church to escape the people and Pastors. I was offered a job in Washington State which fell through. I was gone from New Life Community Church for four months. I came back to Chicago and back to New Life Community Church. God brought me back and I got involved with the Church again and realized that God gave me a break to show me that my will cannot be done only His will can be done. He also gave me a job that is comparable to the job that fell through. Better yet this job gives me weekends and holidays off. If I would have had the other job I would have worked weekends and been in another State. In other words I would have been less involved in God's work.

  10. God hunt me down, I was having dreams, I was heavily stress, constant headaches, living in a sinful secret I thought I had, God new, all these things were God's warnings. It all accumulated to God's calling on 8/30/2011 and administer by Pastor Mark to repent and accept Jesus our Lord Savior. This day was both liberating and spiritual, something never experience by me, and yet this secret devastated my family. I lose everything, being a husband, respect, dignity, I walk in shame, condemnation for over a year an half, through counseling and small groups, sharing with fellow brothers, I was able to bring sanity back into my life. My struggles continues, my consequences continues, I know that The good Lord has forgiven me and I press forward, staying focus and receiving God's strength and guidance.

Welcome to M3. I'm glad you joined with us and we all want to encourage on your spiritual journey. Remember that Jesus' loving sacrifice for you was totally and completely sufficient to pay for even the most hideous of all our sins and to make us virtually blameless and righteous in His sight. You, like all of us have been acquitted of great transgression and so don't allow the enemy to let them rule over you. As far as the consequences – they can become a blessing as you sincerely man up to your responsibilities, seeking to do what is best and right for those involved. Seek the Lord's strength to put their interests and needs first before your own. In Christ, I love you brother.

Why do you flee from your calling:
I recall fleeing from God and a community of believers when I was in a lie of being alone without supporters. I recall the staunch felling growing as it grew in the midst of me making excuses and taking up the time in work sulking and involving myself in more activities at the church.

  13. 1. I was definitely fleeing from God. I was too busy trying to watch DA Bears. Realized that I was getting very little out of it.Priorities were out of whack. I have to say that the work of an evangelist is the not the easiest. I have an appreciation for them (us). I gave a card (mini movies) out at the grocery store yesterday. I could not muster up the courage at first and once I got started I could not be-quiet. Go figure.

  14. 1. I'm sure there are other times, but what first comes to mind was in my BC days. I had started going to the Navigator Bible studies, while in the service on the base. I wasn't so faithful at first and some of the guys that regularly attended the Bible study would stop by my barracks and encourage me to go. One day that I just didn't feel like going to the study so I went into the TV lounge in the barracks and sat in a large chair with a high big seating back that could hide me. They guys came through the barracks looking for me. Not finding me they were ready to leave when one said “Lets check the TV Room.” They came in and walked over to the high backed chair I was in and found me. Pretending that I had forgotten all about the Bible study, I sort of reluctantly went with them. Even though I went with a poor attitude sometimes, I was always blessed by learning something about God.

I was like I hope he leaves so I can just say oh well he left. I have to be honest I felt bad afterwards. You never know if that person was going through something. That was a time that pop in my head. Its not fleeing but it was a time I don't obey God I guess.

    A. He wants us to be in his word every day, but he is not a legalist in the sense that he is a forgiving God that will not penalize us if we stumble. As long as we repent, ask for forgiveness, and accept him, he will let us enter his kingdom.

  23. 1) Definitely before I saw beauty in Him, before I respected Him, before I trusted Him. Those are easy to admit, all the world has them though the boundaries of their time may change. Most times when I actively refuse the will of God its either a pleasant experience i want or a pain I want to avoid. its really that simple when I take it all apart and find its life source. I think the last time was procrastinating to apologize to my wife.

Yes, God does want us to be in His word daily. That's not because He is a legalist. Instead, it is because He speaks to us through His word. In addition, we learn more about Him through His word as well.

"You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word." Psalms 119: 114

    4. Good job on setting the example Alex.

1 Timothy 4:12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

  25. 1. In readibg the stories from some of our new brothers in M3, it is clear that there are many who have gone through a similar journey. I was hiding things, attending New Life for 10 years, but only being a Cristian for the last 2. God has done incredible things in my life and in my marriage and family, and I have expectation and faith for what He has in store for my future!

  26. 1. There was a brief moment in time (2yrs approximately 2010-2012) where the Word of the Lord was being engrained into my heart finally understanding some of His truth. But still, the cravings of the flesh and the desires of my thoughts and ways *Ephesians 2 : 3 Kept leading me to the wrong paths ex: going to bars for wrong reasons, searching for women...
But through all this, God who has a steadfast love for me, expressed His rich mercy upon me*Eph.2:4 and extended His grace. From that moment on God made me new in Christ!
