A Man and His Mouth
When you
get to 69:22-28, you’ll notice how David uses the word “May” a few different
times. Just as one would start a blessing with that word- “May the Lord bless
you and keep you”- that same word was used to invoke a curse. (By the way, I’ve
heard even Bible teachers mention that Peter used profanity when he denied the
Lord three times. No! He didn’t cuss, he cursed- inviting God’s judgment to
fall upon him. Here’s an example of such cursing- “May the Lord strike me dead
if I ever knew that man!” That’s also the gist of the curse found in Ps.109:9.)
We also need
to talk about the verses that are scattered throughout Psalm 69 that speak of
our Messiah. It’s hard to argue against
a long passage, such as Psalm 22, which we saw describes the suffering of our Savior.
But a lot of the single “messianic verses” scattered in Ps.69 and in other
psalms seem to refer to what David or someone else was going through. A skeptic
would certainly say that it was nothing more than that. For example, Psalm 69
is written by David who confesses his own guilt in it (69:5), so it is not
messianic there. Yet a few different verses are taken from that psalm and
applied to our Messiah- "They hate me without reason" (compare 69:4 with John 15:25); “zeal for your house consumes me” (compare 69:9a with
John 2:17). “The insults of those who insult you fall on me.” (compare 69:9b
with Rom.15:3) “They gave me vinegar for my thirst (compare 69:21 with
Mt.27:34). So how can we say these are messianic? Because their author, God, says
they are in the New Testament through his Spirit guided writers. Jesus himself
declared that the OT spoke much in anticipation of him. For example, to a
couple of disciples, our risen Lord “explained to them what was said in all the
Scriptures concerning himself.” Luke 24:27. (By the way, wouldn’t you have
loved to be in on that Bible study?!) So think of the 16 or more messianic phrases
scattered in the Psalms as clues left for the NT writers and us to later find.
We are on a God hunt and fortunately, like a father playing "Hide and Go Seek" with his little ones, He likes to be found.
Sometimes
in the OT, God the Son made surprise appearances on the stage of the OT as the
angel of the Lord. Many times he was predicted by prophets. Oftentimes he was
foreshadowed by such things as the sacrifice of a perfect lamb, the tabernacle,
the feasts, the priesthood, etc. Jesus was and is the fulfillment of all these
things and so much more. So, to borrow the title of Norm Geisler’s great book, “To
Understand the Bible, Look for Jesus.” This brings us to another BIG Bible
Interpretation Guideline- Keep in mind that the grand theme of the Bible is
Jesus. Christ himself declared, “These are the Scriptures that testify about me”
John 5:39.
Ready
for it’s BIG balancing contrast? Don’t spiritualize the Scriptures. Those who
spiritualize tell spiritual lies. Don’t read spiritual hidden meanings about
Jesus into everything. Many have done this, for example, with the Song of Songs. It clearly
is about passionate love in marriage. But those who blush at that have instead said
it’s about Christ’s love for his bride the church. Ugh! Teach what it teaches! The plain thing is the
main thing. And the main thing is the plain thing. That’s another BIG point.
Lastly,
there is a place for cursing others. But it is not ours, it is God’s. As we
come to the NT, Jesus said, “bless those who curse you.” Luke 6:28 (see also
Rom.12:14; James 3:9-10). This leads us to another BIG point- Recognize the progress of
revelation. The NT supersedes the OT. That’s of course why we also don’t offer sacrifices
anymore. We are not under the law of Moses, but under the law of Christ. You
would have to be an ancient Israelite farmer with sheep to sacrifice at God's holy place to live out the 613
Mosaic commands. It was never meant for all people or forever. Jeremiah 31:31-34 even predicted that the old covenant would be replaced by a new covenant. Thankfully, Christ replaced the old with the new through his death. So make sure someone
is not trying to get you to follow Mosaic commandments, instead of Christ. That so angers God and Paul that he wrote a curse or imprecation upon them- “If anybody is preaching to you a
gospel other than what you have accepted, let him be eternally condemned!”
Gal.1:9. As we have learned, Jesus is center of Scripture whom God
sacrificed out of love for our salvation. He suffered the curse we deserved. To
reject him, rather than to receive Him out of grateful love, it to receive God’s
curse- "If anyone does not love the Lord- a curse be on him.” 1 Cor.16:2.
Instead our hearts say, “Come O Lord!” "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!"

Here’s a summary of our BIG Bible Interpreting Guidelines we've discovered so far-
Ask questions!
Give careful consideration to what you read.
The purpose of rightly interpreting the Bible is to rightly obey it.
The Bible is the best interpreter of itself. So compare scripture with Scripture.
Being prayerful is commendable but it is not a dependable replacement for the careful study of Scripture.
It’s imperative that we know what kind of literature we are reading to interpret it and apply it correctly.
Knowing the background to what we are reading helps us better understand the passage. Commentaries and online resources can help us with such.
Knowing the mood of the author helps you better understand his message.
The apostles often quoted the OT from the Greek version of it called the Septuagint; thus don't be surprised that it doesn't line up exactly with our OT translated from the Hebrew. Plus, they paraphrased at times, all under the inspiration of God.
Since the Bible is God’s perfect word, if you think you’ve found an error in the Bible, it’s your error, not God’s! Many people think they’ve found a contradiction, when it may only be a contrasting statement, not a contradictory statement.
“Humbly accept the word” We don’t stand in judgment on it, it stands in judgment on us.
Keep in mind that the grand theme of the Bible is Jesus.
The plain thing is the main thing. And the main thing is the plain thing.
Don’t spiritualize the Scriptures. Those who spiritualize tell spiritual lies. Don’t read spiritual hidden meanings about Jesus into everything.
Recognize the progress of revelation. The NT supersedes the OT.
1. Thanks for the the distinction of Imprecatiry Psalms as this is an area I had concern with. I have sat with some Believers who almost sounded like they were on a witch hunt to take down a mans tormenting girl friend. It is now clear that I was on a good path, as when I prayed for the man - I prayed to our Father to disclose his Will for this relationship. MAY you Lord show her true heart to my friend and let her show if she has true Love for you Lord and not concealed manipulation of your Word. If it is true let your Love show through her to my friend-- if not true, Lord disclose her hard heart and let my friend move on so he can continue to grow with you Lord.
ReplyDeleteJudgement still remains ONLY with God the Father and is not ours to make -- for we are never to judge others, we are to encourage, as others can still move forward with The Lord . Pride and Judgement are the most difficult to rid ourselves of.

1.- Thank you once again for today's great lesson reminding us that the main theme of the bible is Jesus and also at the same time we should not try to spiritualize everything. Sometimes I do see that taking place in Bible studies, when someone tries to spiritualize a passage in order to fit their obscure view about a specific topic.
ReplyDeleteMay we be always seek God in our reading of scripture so that we may always lead others in the same direction.

DeleteHello I am confused a bit here, I'm new around here, but I need to understand how I may be spiritualizing everything and how can you breakdown further about the mosaic commandments. I don't like to feel confused in my thinking and analyzing
DeleteI understand what David was doing that I may do at times and that's thank god for the good and the bad and then I'm invoking danger within a prayer which I don't mean any harm just understanding. I don't like to feel desperate in my prayer also and ultimately trust in the lord that Jesus christ will show me the way.
Delete1. Learned what an imprecation means to pray or invoke evil or a curse upon another. And that there are several psalms that contain a verse or two wishing to see God’s judgment come upon the believer's enemies. Before reading today's passage of scripture, I have heard and knew David was an emotional, lay-it-all-out-there type of writer. After reading Psalm 69, I was blown away on some of the things he wished upon his enemies...Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous. (Psalm 69:28 ESV)
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty harsh.

ReplyDeleteReminded me of the following passages, Psalm 3:7-8 "Arise, Lord! Deliver me, my God! Strike all my enemies on the jaw; break the teeth of the wicked. From the Lord comes deliverance. May your blessing be on your people."
Romans 12:17-19 "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord."

Yes, Antonio. Robert's above cross reference to Romans 12:17-19 is a fitting response- "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord."

Excellent George! Great prayer!
Delete!- What I received from today's lesson was David was trying to seek forgiveness for himself and push some of the blame on others. He knows he did wrong and he pleads for forgiveness from God. He also kinda bribes God by saying if God does the things he requested the people will see it and become joyful for God. What I have learned in my walk with God is He does not need to be bribed and vengeance is His.

ReplyDeleteIn Psalm 69; in addition to David's plea, and the cursing by David, he expresses his praises to God and declares the truth of God's mercy. At the very final verses David is expressing the return of the Messiah with the new Heaven where God's people will dwell. With this we can appreciate the urgency that David had to encounter God despite his wrongdoing. We too can pray on knees that we can become strengthened with the same amount of fervency to move the kingdom forward while knowing that God is just against all enemies of faith

1) One thing that stuck to me is the hidden treasures the bible has for us. Like brother Dave says Hide and seek. "Don’t spiritualize the Scriptures. Those who spiritualize tell spiritual lies. Don’t read spiritual hidden meanings about Jesus into everything." I agree with you brother Dave. When I read the word of God I always pray for God to guide me through his word. I find the bible to be an enjoyable read. Now don't get me wrong I don't treat the bible like other books. Read it once and it goes to the bookshelf. Its the word of God. I learn something new everyday I read it. I pray the Lord guides us through his word everyday.

Vince, happy to hear that you find the bible an enjoyable read in this season you are in. Read it for all it's worth. Take advantage of this season. Absorb as much as you can. Another season may come when the Bible will seem dry to you and perhaps God will feel farther away, Resolve now to persevere and continue to faithfully keep reading it even in the though times until God brings the enjoyment back.
Delete1. That curses were called down upon enemies in the imprecatory psalms can be a somewhat confusing. Especially as you recall the higher standards in the New Testament that require us to love our enemies. My first thought was that God was allowing writers to vent their feelings so that we could see and identify with them. John Piper had much more incite:
ReplyDelete“Conclusion: We will grant to the psalmist (usually David), who speaks, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, as the foreshadowed Messiah and Judge, the right to call down judgment on the enemies of God. This is not personal vindictiveness. It is a prophetic execution of what will happen at the last day when God casts all his enemies into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:15). We would do well to leave such final assessments to God, and realize our own corrupt inability to hate as we ought. While there is unforgivable sin for which we are not to pray (see #4 above), we are told to love our enemies, and pray for those who persecute us, and return good for evil (as David did, see #2 above). This is our vocation by faith. Let us tremble and trust God, lest we fail, and find ourselves on the other side of the curse. “ http://www.desiringgod.org/articles/do-i-not-hate-those-who-hate-you-o-lord

T – I invited a potential protege to the Men's Conference over the weekend and discovered that although he had been attending New Life for some years, he had never personally put his faith and trust in Christ for salvation. The Holy Spirit opened his eyes and heart to see his need and God's loving provision in Jesus. He prayed to receive Christ as his Savior that Friday night in the Dinning Hall. He was one of 20 other men who also joined into the Kingdom of God during the Men's Retreat. How Great is our God.
It was great seeing you at the men's retreat :) I enjoyed your post, very insightful :)
Delete1. Really interesting the idea that David is such a revered person in the history of Israel. If his story was simply the victory over Goliath and his rise to power and eventually capturing the monarchy, it would be understandable. But what a mess he became! Bathsheba, Uriah's murder, his family in shambles...the idea that David continued, even in the hard times, to be a "man after God's heart" is remarkable.

Luke 24:44 says, "Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Jesus is the Awesome God in the flesh! The way the bible was written is amazing, so many different authors writing during different eras expanding approx 1,400 years --- all with one common FOCUS ----- "Jesus Messiah"

ReplyDeleteone of many things I liked and reminded of is the cursing of the mouth. I know David did not cuss but none the less reminds me that with my mouth I praise, exalt and extol my Lord and yet with same mouth I cuss(at times), gossip has come out, even manipulated words.. NO, NO NO... I will keep surrendering to my God, and not let the enemy steal my joy or distract me from such Truth! For all the days my life I will press on living a life worthy of honor and glorifying my Lord.
