That's Some Whale of a Tale!
Skeptics
and scoffers think that such stories as Jonah surviving inside a whale for 3
days are fairy tales for gullible adults. So how do we respond to such skeptics. Our first desired response is not the best response- "Listen buddy, if your IQ was
bigger than your shoe size, you might understand some elementary things.
Miracles are child's play for God. Nothing is too difficult for Him." But
them's fightin' words. Thankfully God has given us guidance on how to respond
to skeptics. It starts with our hearts, not our heads. It starts with being
kind, not coming up with humiliating come backs to put them in their place. Reflectively Read 2 Tim.2:24-26 now.
Such skeptics are not our enemies, they are captives of the
enemy. Once, we were just like them. "At one time we too were foolish, disobedient,
deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures." Titus 3:3. Our hope is to see them set free just as we have been. But how
do we do that? Some believers have come up witty put downs to put skeptics in their place.
They may think they have won the debate. But as its been said, "You may
have won the battle, but you lost the war." How do you know if you have
won in your conversation with a skeptic of miracles or the Scriptures?
You've won when you were not quarrelsome but kind, gently
instructing others. Asking good questions is a great way to gently
instruct others. Asking questions respectfully shows that you care about what
they think. It shows you want to understand them. "Seek first to
understand before being understood." So ask questions. Questions also keep
you in control of the conversation and can help you keep control of your stoked
emotions when someone attacks your Lord's word. Instead of having to memorize
loads of material to refute dozens of skeptical attacks against God and His
word, here are just a few questions that you can use, no matter what the
skeptic throws at you, including these- There is no way that miracles could
happen, such as Jonah living* in the belly of a whale for three days. The Bible is
full of errors. Jesus is not God. Evolution created everything, etc. So kindly ask these questions:
What led you to believe that? This is such a simple but
powerful question. Then you are not on the defense to answer their objection, they
are now on the defense to defend their bold accusation. In a court of law, the
accuser must prove his point. Your question puts it back on them to come up
with an answer, not on you. Ask this question kindly though, not smugly.
Remember, if you're not the "kind" kind, you're the wrong kind. But what if this guy comes up with reams of "scientific reasons" that led him to believe in his disbelief? Then ask the next question.
Would you consider yourself to be a person who wants the truth?
Most people will say, "Yes." Then simply ask-
Would you read through the gospel of John and ask to be shown the truth and follow it? If they refuse, you could simply say, "I thought you were a person who wanted the truth." At that point, there is no point in talking further. "Leave the presence of a fool" Why? " A fool finds no pleasure in understanding, but delights in airing his own opinions." Prov.14:7;18:2.
Those three questions will serve you very well. But if you
want more, here's another response you can use with the skeptic who says he
won't read the Bible because he doesn't believe in God and the Bible.
Ask-
According to your understanding, what does the Bible teach
about how a person may obtain eternal life?
They will probably say, "But I told you, I don't
believe in the Bible."
Pardon me, I'm not asking what you believe; I'm asking what
you understand. It would be a rather unintellectual approach, to reject
the world's all time best seller without even understanding its main
message. So according to your understanding of the Bible, what does it
teach about how a person may obtain eternal life?
You must be good or keep the 10 commandments, I guess.
I'm afraid someone has given you a warped understanding of
the main message of the Bible. For your answer is opposite of what the
Bible actually teaches. So as a seeker of truth would you please do yourself an
eternal favor and read it for yourself?
If all this seems too much to remember, then just ask them
for their email address and send them the following mini-movie. (The first minute covers this.)
*Skeptics
rightly point out that a man could not breathe inside a fish. Christians point
out that God prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. Thus, it may have been
specially designed for its mission. Many
other Christians (including yours truly), believe Jonah may have died just before or after being swallowed. If he did die, he would be a very good
symbol (or "type") of Christ's death and burial inside the belly of
the earth. Jesus declared, "For as Jonah was three days and three nights
in the belly of the huge fish, so the son of Man will be three days and three
nights in the heart of the earth." Mt.12:40. If Jonah died, then his
prayer of reflection on his ordeal in chapter 2 may have been uttered just
after being brought back to life after three days, just before he was vomited
out onto dry land. He remembers his ordeal in the stormy seas, praying and then
sinking to his death. Christ also prayed in his stormy distress on the cross, died and then was buried, after which the
Lord also answered his prayer three days later bringing Him up from death as with Jonah. He came to life inside the tomb and then left it. It makes sense, though some may still scoff as in the next story-
A
little boy was talking to his teacher about whales and how he had heard in
Sunday School about how a whale had swallowed Jonah.
The
teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a man.
The
little boy remained steadfast in his position and reiterated that indeed, a
whale had swallowed Jonah.
Irritated,
the teacher again stated that a whale could not possibly swallow a man. And even if it could, Jonah wouldn't be alive three days later. That's impossible.
The
little boy said, "I'm not sure how it happened, but when I get to
heaven I will ask Jonah."
The
teacher replied smugly, "What if Jonah isn't in heaven?"
The
little boy replied, "Then you ask him."

2.-Copy down on your MP3 card these key questions to ask those who oppose you-
What led you to believe that?
Would you consider yourself to be a person who wants the truth?
Would you read through the gospel of John and ask to be shown the truth and follow it?
Please practice using these 3 questions. When you see an M3 brother, pretend to be a skeptic and see he does using those 3 questions.

What great things the Lord has done for us! Just see Sunday's list!
Gods word is the living truth and cannot be refuted as prophets told of our Savior inumerous times and it all came true. We need to prepare ourselves to handle objections when Discipling . I found a great book called Lifelines to help prepare us-- but I'm not sure who the author is. Once we have a impact on a non believer they will see The Lord more clearly and become great advocates for him.
ReplyDelete2. Did it. Great questions
LOL! I'll have to take a look at that book again. I have it on my shelf. What a coincidence- same title as today's video :)

Jack it is always very encouraging to see you faithful on the blog everyday and involved all the time in spreading the Gospel. Keep up the great work brother.
DeleteBrother Jack, we'll said "We need to prepare ourselves to handle objections when Discipling." 1 Peter 3:15. God bless you and your family brother.
ReplyDelete1.- 2 Tim 2:24-26 "And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil,
ReplyDelete25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth,
26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will."
What a great passage to keep in mind when reaching out to people with the Gospel, in the past I have found myself very impatient when someone is not receptive. But this passage tells me to be: not quarrelsome, able to teach, patient and gentle. Also remembering that at one point someone was also patient with me helps me do the same knowing that the enemy is satan and not the person I am trying to reach.
Dave thank you for your insight on this topic and on Jonah being dead for three days. Definitely a view that I had not considered but also makes sense when you cross reference it with Mat. 12:40.

Very good Roger. I had always assumed he was alive, but the passages led me to believe otherwise.

24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25 Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.
I get a little excited sometimes when trying to speak the truth to those that are not practicing what they believe. I was also like them at one point and this is a great reminder that I should have patience.

Way to stay consistent and faithful with the blog Lucas. Good job!
DeleteAlright Lucas! So glad to have you on the team!
DeleteGreat gleaning Lucas!
Delete1) I rather enjoy skeptics, they help me to stay alert. I assume that they are convinced of their position in a sincere manner and I hope that they would let me draw them out to understand their world perspective. Often I find skeptics who are inherited skeptics but if given the appropriate questions and evidenced are more then willing to consider the evidence. With so many philosophies competing for their attention; let what keeps them from Christianity be their sinful nature not ours. I believe accusation of ignorance for believing Christianity is an opportunity to evangelize one who does not know he is lost but believes he is secure. let us remember that the deceived believe themselves to be the informed.\
ReplyDelete2. Did it.
Our very own "Mexican Jesus". Well played sir. You looked good up there Sunday.
DeleteYes Antonio, "The deceived believe themselves to be the informed." And their superior attitude can be quite challenging to remain kind.
DeleteThanks Eddie and Dave, I appreciate the strength of your kind words.
Delete“Isaiah 50:4
ReplyDelete4 The Sovereign LORD has given me a well-instructed tongue,
to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning,
wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed”
“Mark 1:32-35
32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”
After reading these passages I see that even as busy as Jesus was healing the sick after sunset, he still woke up early morning to pray. If Jesus made it for prayer every day then we have no excuses.
So have you made or will you join me in making such a vow or commitment to get this all important rock in- to not go to sleep until you have spent time with God and his word?
1.-Simply answer Yes or No in answer to the above
YES
2.- Write out Prov.8:34 on your MP3 card. Simply write “Did It” when you did it.
Did it.
Your doing great Chuy. In the Empowerment track at the Men's Retreat, this simple prayer formula was shared as a challenge:
Delete30-Day Prayer Challenge
Spend 20 minutes in prayer every day for 30 days!
Spend 4 minutes in each of these 5 categories.
4minutes - Enjoy God
4minutes - Be Thankful
4minutes - Name your brokenness
4minutes - Ask for the good stuff
4minutes - Become more like Jesus
This praying can be broken up through out the day, like 4 minutes in the morning, 4 minutes on your way to work,
4 minutes during a break time, 4 minutes during lunch etc.
Excellent Chuy! So glad you have also made the Unstoppable commitment!
Delete1. What really stuck out to me today was asking questions and leading the conversation in love."Asking good questions is a great way to gently instruct others. Asking questions respectfully shows that you care about what they think. It shows you want to understand them. "Seek first to understand before being understood." So ask questions. Questions also keep you in control of the conversation..."
ReplyDelete2. Did it.
Excellent Eddie! Thanks for passing on lots of encouragement to others.
DeleteYes, let us kindly ask the questions in love to show that we do care and try to understand where some of skeptics are coming from.
DeleteThank u Eddie for encouraging me to join this group and also for attending my dads memorial service. You are a good man and i am glad that i met you. Keep doing what your doing brother!
Delete1) I like those questions. I feel they will help a lot with Skeptics. One thing I don't like doing is arguing about the word of God. Many times that's what Skeptics want to do. Those question will help me stand firm on the word of God and have peace knowing that there is chance that Skeptics could change.
ReplyDelete2) DID IT
Very good Vince!

ReplyDeleteSpeaking to skeptics can foundationally show our love for them. Additionally asking questions is needed in not getting provoked. Also when we ask of another person it is liberating that they can begin to think for themselves rather than what they heard or even developing their own belief. It is indeed in kindness that we show the example of Christ.
verse 26 "and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will." This verse solidifies the fact that truth cannot pass through me nor am I enabled while I am frustrated or battling when the need is to sheathe my sword.

Good Gary! Glad you're feeling better too.
DeleteGary may it be God's great compassion that stirs and moves you to reach out in kindness and gentleness to the skeptics who are among your family members, friends, neighbors and fellow workers.
Delete1.-Share something you gleaned from today's blog.
ReplyDeleteI never thought of the possibility that Jonah may have died in the stomach of the great fish and then God resurrected him. It does seem to fit better as a prophetic sign which Jesus referred to when He compared His future death and 3 day burial in the heart of the earth to Jonah's experience of three days in “the belly of a sea monster”(NASB). I think Jonah's prayer can be interpreted either way. It would even add to Jonah's testimony before the people of Nineveh of God's awesome power and make Jonah's severe warning even more urgent. I also loved the Mini Video and will use it.

DeleteThanks Dave!
DeleteSeveral times on when I shared the gospel to a non believer, conversation would be like " oh, don't believe in the bible stuff nor God so I don't need it, thanks though". Ugh sometimes I would be stumped because God's word is so valuable and gives us the hope of eternal salvation through Jesus Christ if we accept Jesus ad our Lord and savior... and so I would be stumped.... question like "would you want to know the truth since your a man that seeks truth", or "what led you to believe that", could further on continue a conversation with that person and know what is deeply rooted in that person. Also, try to always give a kindly response helps.
ReplyDeleteDone.
Ismael, I know you have such a heart for the lost. so here's another great question- "If you were wrong, how soon would you want to know?"
DeleteMmm good question..
Deleteright now there is one who grew up jehova but does not practice now. He has told me at times that believes in Jesus as Christ but can't get his heart and mind around that Jesus is God.?
I told him, not here to force anything upon you but to read book of John, he responded the word is not in my heart right now... ugh *He is the same person at one time told me "I believe in Christ bit I choose to go my way".. I will continue to pray for him.
Thanks Dave for everything

ReplyDeleteGreat video demonstration on priorities, Yes, thank you Dave and brothers of m3, for helping me to take my Bible Studies to a new level. ReplyDelete2. Did it.
Hello Oscar, it is awesome seeing you stay consistent in your studies :)
Delete1. 2 Timothy 2:25-26 says, "with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will." Dave G. later said "Such skeptics are not our enemies, they are captives of the enemy." So true. Reminds me of a cross reference, Eph. 6:12 states, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places."
ReplyDeleteSo our response is simple, be gentle in presenting biblical truth praying to God that He would grant the skeptic repentance, leading to the truth :)
