You've Got What It Takes! Take Off!
Have you ever met someone who really believed in you? It just seems like they believed you would take off in life. You may have stalled and lost faith, but they still encouraged you to fly. They may have had more faith in you than you had in yourself. Those people are great to have as wingmen. Jonah certainly had crashed and burned, but God didn't give up on him. He still knew great things could be accomplished through Jonah if he would just trust and obey. I want to be God's spokesman to your heart. I believe great things for you and your future too because God has GREAT desires for you. As a matter of fact, I believe great things have already begun in your life. I'm seeing proof of it for example on the GREAT scoreboard- you're sharing God's word with others and encouraging others. That's great! I've also read such good thoughts you've shared from your study of Scripture. And think where we've flown together. Just over the last few weeks we've covered many BIG Bible Interpreting Guidelines. We also used the 3 key components for accurate Bible study- Observation, Interpretation and Application. You've done great! You've earned your wings and so I want you to fly solo and take off!
I want you to read through Jonah chapter 3 and then share anything from it that you wish. Perhaps the summary of what we've covered below will re-ignite your jet engines. Have God-confidence. You're going to do great! God believes in you and so do I. Take off! (Enjoy the Top Gun clip by clicking the link below. It starts in at the action- 2min.35sec. Picture me as the catapult "cat" officer cheering your take off- seen at 3min.22sec.:)
Here’s a summary of our BIG Bible Interpreting Guidelines we've discovered so far-
Ask questions!
Give careful consideration to what you read.
The purpose of rightly interpreting the Bible is to rightly obey it.
The Bible is the best interpreter of itself. So compare scripture with Scripture.
Being prayerful is commendable but it is not a dependable replacement for the careful study of Scripture.
It’s imperative that we know what kind of literature we are reading to interpret it and apply it correctly.
Knowing the background to what we are reading helps us better understand the passage. Commentaries and online resources can help us with such.
Knowing the mood of the author helps you better understand his message.
The apostles often quoted the OT from the Greek version of it called the Septuagint; thus don't be surprised that it doesn't line up exactly with our OT translated from the Hebrew. Plus, they paraphrased at times, all under the inspiration of God.
Since the Bible is God’s perfect word, if you think you’ve found an error in the Bible, it’s your error, not God’s! Many people think they’ve found a contradiction, when it may only be a contrasting statement, not a contradictory statement.
“Humbly accept the word” We don’t stand in judgment on it, it stands in judgment on us.
Keep in mind that the grand theme of the Bible is Jesus.
Don’t spiritualize the Scriptures. Those who spiritualize tell spiritual lies. Don’t read spiritual hidden meanings about Jesus into everything.
The plain thing is the main thing. And the main thing is the plain thing.
Recognize the progress of revelation. The NT supersedes the OT.
Understand Hebrew poetry- the second line gives insight into the first line.
The context of a word determines its meaning. A text without a context is a pretext.
Words also need to be understood in their historical context.
Interpret difficult verses in light of clear ones.
Look for repeated words or phrases to help you discover what the author is emphasizing. The main thing is the plain thing.
Look for repeated words or phrases to help you discover what the author is emphasizing. The main thing is the plain thing.
Look for major Bible themes as you read.
God is the true hero of the book.
The Key Components of Accurate Bible Study
1.-Observation- (What does it say?) Get the F.A.C.T.S. like a CSI detective- Fast Facts- Ask Questions, Check for key words, Title and Summarize your report.
2.Interpretation- (What does it mean?) Like an explorer, interpret the ancient passageway passage by looking at such things as the Context, Cross references, Commentaries and Concordances. Tools such as Biblehub.com can be a great help here.
3.Application- (What does it mean for me?) Like a sports doctor, apply the remedy to where it is most needed. Ask the SPEAK questions to "hear from God's word."
S- Is there a Sin for me to confess or a Song that comes to mind to sing?
P- Is there a Principle to follow or a Promise to claim or a Prayer to also utter?
E- Is there an Example to follow or an Error to avoid?
A-Is there an Answer to a problem I’ve had or an Action to take?
K-Is their Knowledge for which I can praise or thank God?
1.Share something from your study of Jonah chapter 3.
2.-Pick one verse from Jonah 3 or a cross reference you may have found elsewhere in Scripture and put that on your MP3 card. Then do the Did it. Please share that verse with us too. Thanks for enriching us with it!
See you on the GREAT scoreboard.
Please also go to the Contacts tab and type in the names of your 2 prayer warriors. Don't have two? Please recruit a second and send me their name and email address today. The enemy would love to keep us without air (prayer) support.

1. I thought that it was important to see that Jonah given a second chance was obedient to God and did go and speak with power and confidence in God to the inhabitants of Nineveh. He spoke with such power that people and King immediately listened and turned from their sins and fasted asking God to spare their lives from destruction. God did listen to their pleas and spared their lives.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great example Jonah gives us of what a person can do when they are abedient to God and are willing to submit to His will.
God empowers that person and can use them in a mighty way.
Also when we repent and ask for forgiveness, God may spare us from destruction.
2. Did it. Jonah 3:10 "When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it."
Yes, aren't we grateful from second chances, and sometimes the third, fourth and fifth ones that God provides. Amen!

ReplyDeleteGod direct my thinking today so that it be divorced of self pity, dishonesty, self-will, self-seeking and fear. God inspire my thinking, decisions and intuitions. Help me to relax and take it easy. Free me from doubt and indecision. Guide me through this day and show me my next step. God give me what I need to take care of any problems. I ask all these things that I may be of maximum service to you and my fellow man. AMEN
1. My initial question was to God's response, why did He change his mind with the Ninevites?
ReplyDelete3:10 - When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened.
I understand that God's character is unchanging, so why would He change His ways. Well, the verse mentions He has compassion. Just like we were destined for destruction, God who is rich in mercy, made us alive in Christ Jesus, and saved us by grace, when we turned from our evil ways.
I looked up some commentary and found some great insight:
God's initial warning through Jonah came with a condition, God's judgement would happen unless the people of Nineveh repented. God did not bring judgement to pass (at least for the time being. They returned to their wicked ways generations later. Later generations are responsible for their own repentance.) It seemed that it was God's intention along to show mercy to the Ninevities.
Jonah even confirms this in the early part of chapter 4. "I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity."
Thank you God that you are slow to anger and have given us all a chance to respond to your warning message, one that calls for us to repent, believe and be baptized.
Great digging Eddie! God has and always will be a God of compassion. Jonah knew this and resented that God would show such to the Ninevites. Yet he seemed to forget the great compassion that God had just extended to him.
DeleteVery good work Eddie. Thank God for His compassion.
Delete1.- Pick and write out one verse from Ps.119:9-16 and share what you like about it. Ps.119:16 "I delight in Your decrees; I will not neglect Your Word."
ReplyDeleteI really like this, short and to the heart. How can one not want to read the Bible, you are dwelling into God's message, his alone, for us to digest. They teach of righteousness, peace, love and spiritual development. Once one gives reading God's word a chance, you become like a sponge, wanting to learn more of what God expects from us and how to live this life he has given us and the promise of eternal life if we abide by his way.
2.- Did it.
Eddie and all the brother's, you have been setting a good example of your dedication to The Lord. Your words are inspirational and uplifting, I'm honored to be with M3. Thank you Dave for all this Work you but into this, God Bless us all!

"Ninevites believed God." (Jonah 3:5a) = They received the Message!

DeleteWow Oscar! Did you ever get so much good encouragement in one day for reading and sharing God's word? You're on a team with GREAT men!
Delete1. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. (Psalm 119:11 NIV). I picked this verse because we are, being of flesh are weak to the worldly things around us, but as long as we stay grounded in his word and surround ourselves with GODLY people we stand a fighting chance.
ReplyDelete2. Did it
Great verse my brother. Great to have you in M3. GOD BLESS
DeleteThat's right Ricardo. We are God's warriors, we are more than conquerors. If God is for us, who can be against us? What can man do to me (us)? Glad you are with us.
DeleteRich I am so glad you persevered through all the setbacks, because now I and the other men are being enriched by you. And it is our joy to enrich you as well. So glad you're on the team!
Delete1) The key things that stuck to me was the fact Jonah got the wake up call and accomplish what God wanted him to do. JONAH 3:3 It was amazing that the Ninevites called for a huge fast. JONAH 3:5 They didn't laugh at Jonah they received the word of the Lord and began to seek his face. Finally the chapter shows the love and mercy of God. JONAH 3:10
ReplyDelete2)When God saw what they had done and how they had put a stop to their evil ways, he changed his mind and did not carry out the destruction he had threatened. Jonah 3:10
Brother Vince, I thank God that he has mercy on us all. Keep up the great work brother :-)
DeleteGreat thought Vince- They didn't laugh at him (or kill him!). Not only had God miraculously prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah, but He also miraculously prepare them to repent. (It will be interesting to discover one day how He did that.:)
DeletePsalm 119:10 Now with all my heart I desire to be in God's word to be the man who God

John that is great desire that you have put in your heart. You are in the right steps to becoming more and more and obedient follower of Christ. Great job. Stay strong

DeleteI like the way you personalized that verse John. Way to grow!
DeleteJonah 3:10- And God saw their works that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil which He said He would do unto them and He did it not. This verse just confirmed that God is and always has been a forgiving God. He does not want us to sin but He knows at times our flesh is weak. I have instructed my children when they were growing up that when we sin we are striking God about His face with our hands. I still believe what I taught my children to this day. In Jonah God use him to be a light for Him in the great City of Nineveh. Just think how much more we can do for God as a group.
ReplyDeleteDid it.
Amen! Growing Stronger Together. God bless you Mike.
DeleteGreat thoughts Mike! Oh that we might be a bright light in an ever darkening world.
Delete1.Psalm 119:15 ESV
ReplyDeleteI will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I like this verse because it reminds in order to follow his way and stay on track. We need to be in his word.
2.Did it!
I like that verse also James. Our MP3 cards help us to meditate on God's word. Before using such, few of us did. I hope this approach is starting to help you in this way. It's not magical, but it sure is helpful for this forgetful man. So glad you're with us!
DeletePsalm119:9
ReplyDeleteHow can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to your word.
I like this verse because it gives direction to young people on where we should look if we are to live and behave morally as God wants us to.
2.- Also write your verse on your MP3 card. When you did it, write “Did it.”Then enjoy meditating on it, praying and praising God regarding it and passing it on to others today.
Did it.
Here's another good one Chuy.
Delete1 Timothy 4:12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.
That's a good verse Chuy. I almost picked it too, while I may not be young I’m still young in faith.
DeleteExcellent Chuy! O Lord, help us to stay in your word for it is the path of purity and fellowship with You.
Delete1. The God of many chances. God gives us so many chances like Noah got a second chance after fleeing from God
ReplyDeleteSent a second time by God on a mission to Nineveh, Jonah promptly obeys. He enters into Nineveh and delivers Gods message. The Ninevites believe God and repent, and are spared.
2.Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: Jonah Cross reference
Then the word of the Lord came to me a second time: Jeremiah 13:3
Great summary and cross ref George!
Delete1)Thank God for second chances. Sometimes we have to face danger in order to see how much we need Him. The promise God has for us is that He will be forgiving when we repent.
ReplyDelete2. I found a good cross reference to Jonah 3:2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”
Ezekiel 2:7
You must speak my words to them, whether they listen or fail to listen, for they are rebellious.
Yes that is a good cross reference Sam. Good digging!
Delete1. What a great and merciful God we have as he recues all who believe in him as they repent and change their ways.
ReplyDeleteGod is good always and faithful!
2.Did it. Jonah 3: 10 " When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened."
Great Jack! What came out of my mouth was praise- "Oh God You are merciful!"
Deletemy 2 prayer partners are Joe Lopez and Glenn Skoglund
ReplyDelete1) I think its pretty amazing that they hoped in Gods mercy.
ReplyDelete2)10 Then God saw their actions—that they had turned from their evil ways—so God relented from the disaster He had threatened to do to them. And He did not do it.
Yes Antonio. Did Jonah reveal such? How did they know?
DeleteGod was able to change a nation though Jonah. Even though he did not act in obedience God directive remained and the mission was fulfilled. Just like us God will ensure our entire identity is adjusted to Him before giving us His mission. And if we might falter in obedience God is quick to provide the second chance and ensure we are enabled to respond in obedience correctly the next time His command is given.
ReplyDeleteDid it
Good job Gary! What a patient Teacher we have as you wrote- And if we might falter in obedience God is quick to provide the second chance and ensure we are enabled to respond in obedience correctly the next time His command is given.
Delete1.- Pick and write out one verse from Ps.119:9-16 and share what you like about it.
ReplyDeletePsalm 119:15
I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways.
I picked this verse because I think it’s a good reminder to study the bible, to think about what I’m reading and not just read it. It reminds me of something I was told (I think by Pastor Mark) when reading the bible to ask two questions –What are you saying to me? And what do I need to do about it?
2.- Did it
Very good George! Yes, I remember Pastor Mark saying that as well. I hope the MP3 cards are helping you reflect more often on God's good ways.
Delete1.Share something from your study of Jonah chapter 3.
ReplyDeleteJonah 3:10 When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it.
How remarkable God is by what He accomplished through a single reluctant prophet. The entire great city was spared, because it's people listened to the warning God had given to Jonah for them. From the least to the greatest, even the king of Nineveh repented and led by command and example. I think of Jesus, the very Son of God and the greatest of all the prophets, going through the small Jewish towns, preaching “Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand” (Matt 4:17) while performing numerous miracles of healing and casting out demons. When the proud and hard of heart Pharisees demanded a sign, Jesus said that the men of Nineveh will stand up in with that generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because they at least listened to Jonah, but not Him who was so much greater then Jonah. Jesus knows the hearts and minds of men. His judgments will be perfect and fair, for He knows the amount of revelation that is needed for men to be able to choose to repent and be spared or condemned.
2) I chose a cross reference as my MP3:
Jeremiah 18:8
"and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned." (NASB)
I think of our nation and the disasters it deserves as it grows in greater wickedness and violence. I wonder what other warning needs to be made by God, other then what we already have in the Bible. Who best should declare that warning other then the Church of God and we who compose His Church.
Very good thoughts and cross references Dave. I agree regarding the danger our nation is in, for that matter, many of the nations of the world where the gospel has been proclaimed for so long, but is now largely ignored. Europe is a prime example. They may appear quite respectable compared to the Ninevites, but the Ninevites repented before the Lord and His preached word.
DeleteBrother Dave H, "His judgments will be perfect and fair, for He knows the amount of revelation that is needed for men to be able to choose to repent and be spared or condemned." love it, great insight :-)
Delete1.- Pick and write out one verse from Ps.119:9-16 and share what you like about it.
ReplyDelete"I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." Psalms 119:11
I like this verse because it shows the importance of meditating on and studying God's word.
2.- Also write your verse on your MP3 card. When you did it, write “Did it.”Then enjoy meditating on it, praying and praising God regarding it and passing it on to others today.

Good job Alex! Hope it was a good day and birthday for you.
Delete1. What I gleaned from Jonah ch3.
ReplyDeleteWhat happened?
From God being so merciful to Jonah, He gave him second chance and actually what sounds like a command is go and preach the word of the Lord to Nineveh (v.1) not like in chapter 1 where God says preach against Nineveh. God is so merciful on His intentions to ultimately have Nineveh turn to repentance.
Why?
God's heart was just on them, and the "word" was just profound wen Jonah was proclaiming/preaching that it radically transformed the Ninevites to fasting and repentance ch.3 v.4-5.
resources from "Bible.org".
Only question I have Dave is why sackcloth?
Is it form of humility?? Is it because finding the revelation that God is the "Great I Am" that Ninevites finally found themselves to be less of God?
Glad to see you as a CSI dectective, asking so many questions :) I pray that your thirst for the Lord's truth will lead you into life transforming bible studies :)
Delete1. Divine grace in the repentance of Nineveh is an absolute Miracle of God. If the city of Nineveh repented, there is hope for all sinners :) Here, one man, Jonah, now allows himself to be used by God, by simply opening up his mouth and preaching repentance. A very small degree of light may convince men that humbling themselves before God, confessing their sins with prayer, and turning from sin, are means of escaping wrath and obtaining mercy. In prayer we must cry mightily, with firmness of faith, and devout affection for the Lord. It is not enough to fast for sin, but we must fast from sin; The Ninevites hoped that God would turn from his fierce anger; and that thus their ruin would be prevented. They dared not presume, but they did not despair. Hope of mercy is the great encouragement to repentance. Let us boldly cast ourselves down at the footstool of free grace, and God will look upon us with compassion. God sees who turn from their evil ways, and who do not. Thus he spared Nineveh. We read of no sacrifices offered to God to make atonement for sin; but a broken and a contrite heart, such as the Ninevites then had, he will not despise. Wow, what amazing Grace!!
ReplyDelete2. Psalm 51:7 says, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise." This is a perfect cross reference of Nineveh's repentance. Did it :)
