What Old Testament book is the one most quoted in the New
Testament? It’s the book of Psalms which we are focusing on. 118 verses from it
are quoted from 52 of the 150 psalms in 13 of the 27 New Testament books. (If you care to look, here’s
a handy chart showing- Psalms quoted in the NT) Speaking of OT quotes in the NT (and there are about 300 of them), the Hebrew OT was translated into Greek (It was called the Septuagint aka LXX) a couple hundred years BC. It was the Bible that Jesus and the apostles often quoted from. That's why a lot of the OT quotes in the NT are not identical when you compare it to the actual OT verse. You're comparing two different languages. So that leads us to another BIG Bible Interpreting Guideline #9- The apostles often quoted the OT from the Greek version of it called the Septuagint. Thus don't be surprised that it doesn't line up exactly with our OT, which was translated from the original Hebrew. Plus, they paraphrased at times as well, just as we do today. This was all under the inspiration of God. "All Scripture is God breathed and is useful..." 2 Tim.3:16. By the way, the OT was the only Bible the first Christians had. To skip it, is like skipping the first half of a great movie. Don't devalue the Old Testament. Think of it as the Gold Testament or the Older Testament. Knowing it will enrich you and your appreciation of the NT. Now back to the Psalms.
Jesus loved the Psalms and quoted more from it than from any other OT book. When the Pharisees opposed Jesus’ claim to be the promised Messiah, He quoted a messianic psalm. We’ve looked at two wisdom psalms [Ps.1 & 91] and a lament psalm [Ps.142]. Lament psalms leave us longing for an end to this lamentable world. So now let’s unearth the gold of a messianic psalm- it will reveal One who will make this wrong world right.

We’ve looked at two wisdom psalms [Ps.1 & 91] and a lament psalm [Ps.142]. Lament psalms leave us longing for an end to this lamentable world. So now let’s unearth the gold of a messianic psalm- it will reveal One who will make this wrong world right.
A messianic psalm, as the name implies, is one that
magnifies the Messiah. The NT translation of Messiah is “Christ.” They both
mean the same thing- “the Anointed One”- the Chosen One of God who would come
to redeem, remove the wicked, rule, and restore everything. (Until that time,
we are his willing troops, seeking to advance his kingdom until He comes.) The
Pharisees expected a Mighty Messiah, not a suffering servant, so they rejected
Jesus. But Jesus took them to task with a messianic psalm they thought they knew
well. Read Ps.110 and then read Mt.22:41-45. (Ps.110:4 is another messianic
portion that Heb.5:6; 7:21 focuses on. So this short psalm is loaded!)
Don't you love Ps.110:3- “Your troops will be willing on
your day of battle…” Let’s make this our prayer that God would give us more
willing troops (pros) to battle with us until our mighty Messiah’s return. Then
we, with all of his heavenly troops, will join Him on His day of battle. Note
how our messianic psalm is ultimately fulfilled this way in Rev.19:11-16- “I
saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is
called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. His eyes are like
blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him
that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and
his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him,
riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Coming out of his
mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. ‘He will rule
them with an iron scepter.’ He treads the winepress of the fury of the
wrath of God Almighty. On
his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”
Amen!
Even so come Lord Jesus! Right near the end of the above quote from Rev.19, it
says “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” Interestingly, this is a quote
from another powerful messianic psalm-
Ps.2. Both Ps.110 and Ps.2 prophesy of a coming time of ultimate worldwide rebellion,
and yet the conquest of our coming King. (You might like to read Ps.2 when you have the time.) Aren’t you glad we’re fighting on the right
side!

Here’s a summary of our BIG Bible Interpreting Guidelines we've discovered so far-
Ask questions!
Give careful consideration to what you read.
The purpose of rightly interpreting the Bible is to rightly obey it.
The Bible is the best interpreter of itself. So compare scripture with Scripture.
Being prayerful is commendable but it is not a dependable replacement for the careful study of Scripture.
It’s imperative that we know what kind of literature we are reading to interpret it and apply it correctly.
Knowing the background to what we are reading helps us better understand the passage. Commentaries and online resources can help us with such.
Knowing the mood of the author helps you better understand his message.
The apostles often quoted the OT from the Greek version of it called the Septuagint; thus don't be surprised that it doesn't line up exactly with our OT translated from the Hebrew. Plus, they paraphrased at times, all under the inspiration of God.
1. What amazes me most is how God has prophesied for thousands of years through others about the win or victory of righteousness and the war. Telling the whole world about our Savior and Messiah but that this obstinate mankind rejected his word. Simplistically put-- God is all knowing and told us the end of the story-- we follow Jesus and we will inherit his Kingdom. Satan is already defeated but he just lingers among earth with his evil angels to pull his last followers down with him before the beautiful return of I ur Lord. Time is short-- so we must give full effort to the end of time to plant seeds and help the lost to be part of the effort to move God's Kingdom forward-M3

DeleteGood morning and god bless everyone for the teachings and prayers along with the challenges, I'm new here and have been trying to comment but I hope this message gets out just to verify. Thank you all and god bless.
Delete1.- What a great and awesome gift that God has given us by giving us his Word. If we are feeling down or defeated Psm 110 will lift us up and encourage, knowing that in the end God wins the battle. If we are feeling encouraged and doing well Psm 110 will inspire us to continue telling the lost of God's redemptive plan for this lost world.

Delete1. Thought it is interesting how the Pharisees, some of the smartest, most knowledgeable of the OT law, are always trying to trap Jesus into saying something blasphemous against God. Yet Jesus, most of the time, silences them with the law and the Word that they are already suppose to know so well.

Yes Eddie. I love it when Jesus says to them, "Haven't you read...?"
DeleteEddie, how about when they brought the woman caught in adultery. Jesus Christ silence them by saying "he who is without sin let him cast the first stone."
Delete1. The thing that struck me the most is that there are so many prophecies in the Old Testament that Christ forfilled in the New Testament.
ReplyDeleteWhen King David pend Psalm 110 verse 1 he was referring to the Messiah Christ Jesus. Jesus in turned use that to shut the Pharisees up in Matthew 22 verse 41 through 45. there are so many prophecies in the Old Testament that Christ forfilled.
One of my favorites prophecies is
John 3:14
"Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,"
Numbers 21:9
So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.
Today, the medical field uses the snake on the browns pole as a medical sign.I believe it's called the sign of life.

1) That while the words are important the point is more important. If we're not careful we can become those who strain at gnats and swallow camels; let us not be so fixated with the details that we miss the BIG PICTURE. May our papa God, grant us the wisdom to find balance in our pursuit to know Him in the deep waters of His written word. Glory to God that He can be seen in the portrait of His word.

1.-What’s one thing that strikes you from what you've read here today? First thing that struck me was how people from way back then are same as some people today. People are always trying to test God. When God shows them His splendor they want to see more. Just look at 9-11. God was in all the news papers and people were turning to Him but now you don't hear or see anything in the news and people in general are not talking about Him anymore. It seems like the Country went back to their old ways before 9-11. Second thing that stuck me is at least the people back then stop testing His wisdom but people now a days still test Him in every way. Who are the smart people them then or people of this generation? I think the people then are smarter because even if they did not believe in Him they were smart enough to leave Him alone until the prophesy time.

1) Something that stuck me today was the fact that Jesus was getting attacked by the Pharisees. He stood his ground and threw verse at them. It's amazing the Pharisees complained about Jesus' teachings, yet they would give Jesus the opportunity to teach them by questioning him. Jesus took that opportunity to teach the gospel. I've had it happen where a guy says I don't want nothing to do with Jesus, yet he has so many questions about him. I didn't pick on him and Say " I thought you don't like Jesus". No I just began to speak the gospel to him. Jesus used the word of God we should too whether new or old testament.

1.It's easy to point the a finger of judgement at those pesky pharisees...getting Jesus all wrong and everything. I often find myself licking my index finger and putting out an invisible candle myself when Jesus "goes in" on them. Today's interesting thought though is a little self reflection. How often am I the pharisee? How often am I the target of Jesus's correction? How often do I get Jesus wrong? Even the disciples, Jesus's hand-picked proteges, didn't quite get Him. Forgive me Lord when I get you wrong or substitute my own view of who you should be...continue to show me who you really are and continue to challenge my own ill-conceived notions of your purpose, our relationship, and your deity.

Psalm 110:3 Your troops will be willing on your day of battle, arrayed in holy majesty …
ReplyDeletePsalm 110 points to a great and final battle in the future when all of Christ's enemies are crushed and judged and put in their place as a footstool under Our Lord's feet. But up to that time there will be many small and great skirmishes that will need to be fought to defend and extend God's Kingdom here and now. I praise the Lord for the men in M3 (and to be counted among them), that are rising to become a willing troop for for Our King.

1. What struck me about today's lesson was Psalm 110:7, my interpretation is if we wait on God and his timing then when it's time to go to battle or when we're striving for something, God will but the necessary people and things in our life to fulfill it.

He then comes back as a mighty Warrior, to rule and to reign (Revelation 19: 11-16 ). He is Awesome! and He is our Commander in Chief. "And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” --- It makes me think of the verse, if God is for you, who can stand against you??

Just by speaking from the Word of God and the truth, the Pharisees could not reply in knowledge to what Jesus was saying. It is a remarkable proof to how we can be capable in the similar way. Not just sowing proof that we remember what we read or proving we know more things; but very finely dividing the falsehood from the truth, and sharing that truth.
It is also worth noting that the Messianic psalms are encouraging to keep battling on; just like battle cries, while at the same time a song for victory. We fight on toward the end of the battle but at the same time it has already been finished and won.
