You are a Sports Doctor
Two days
ago, you were a CSI detective, investigating the crime scene caused by Jonah’s
disobedience. We gathered the FACTS by listing- Fast Facts, Asking Questions,
Checking for key words because they leave clues, and then we Titled and
Summarized our CSI report. (This is what’s involved in Observation- What does
the passage say?) Then yesterday, you were an Indiana Jones explorer. You
discovered markings on a pyramid wall
and you deciphered their meaning. (via Biblehub.com, you have the tools expert
explorers use, studying the- Context, Cross references, Commentaries and Concordances.
These enable you to come up with a proper interpretation as to the meaning of
the markings. This is what’s involved in Interpretation- What does the passage
mean?)
Today,
you are a sports doctor. Pro athletes come to you with all kinds of complaints.
Some might complain of feeling weak, ill, depressed, blurred vision, etc. You have to look and listen to discover what’s bothering them. Then you
prescribe an appropriate remedy. Sometimes, it might include a change of diet, different
exercises; more rest, even changing their stinking thinking that has taken
their head out of the game. You know they can perform better.
Here
comes your first athlete for the day. He was an all star quarterback for the
team, but he has really let the team down recently. He deserves to be cut from the team for
ditching a vital game to go on a cruise. The ruin he caused on that cruise is a whole
other story. It gotten written up by the press and everybody knows about it
now. You also read about the incident. How disgusting! He should have behaved
so much better. You read all about it in Jonah chapter 1. So doc, how would you
help this once star player (prophet) Jonah? You’ve looked and listened to him;
now SPEAK into his life. This is what’s involved after Observation and
Interpretation- it’s Application. What does the passage mean for me and others?
The Bible wasn’t written simply to inform us, but to transform us. How does
this SPEAK to me and those who come to me?
1.-So
read through Jonah chapter 1 again, and now share one or more ways anything from
the passage may SPEAK to you. You don’t have to solve Jonah’s issues today. So
feel free to take anything from Jonah 1 that SPEAKs to you.
S- Is
there a Sin for me to confess or a Song that comes to mind to sing?
P- Is
there a Principle to follow or a Promise to claim or a Prayer to also utter?
E- Is
there an Example to follow or an Error to avoid?
A-Is
there an Answer to a problem I’ve had or an Action to take?
K-Is
their Knowledge for which I can praise or thank God?
2.-Write
down on your MP3 card your SPEAK application. (Then do the Did it.) As always,
look for people that you could pass on what you gleaned. MP3- Meditation,
Prayer, Praise, Pass it on.
So look
what you have done with Jonah 1 over the past few days. You’ve R.E.A.P.ed so much
from it by Reading, Exploring, Applying and Prayerfully Passing it on to others.
Way to grow! Using these tools you can rightly tackle any passage of Scripture
now. (Maybe that was QB Jonah’s problem, a tackle left him with a head injury. He should have been
wearing his helmet- Eph.6:17:)
I want to commend those of you who have been doing a great job of reaching out to encourage especially our new teammates. This says a lot about you!
Especially keep an eye out on the scoreboard for anyone who is not showing up there. "Let us encourage one another daily... so that no one is hardened by sin's deceitfulness." Heb.3:13

Here’s a summary of our BIG Bible Interpreting Guidelines we've discovered so far-
Ask questions!
Give careful consideration to what you read.
The purpose of rightly interpreting the Bible is to rightly obey it.
The Bible is the best interpreter of itself. So compare scripture with Scripture.
Being prayerful is commendable but it is not a dependable replacement for the careful study of Scripture.
It’s imperative that we know what kind of literature we are reading to interpret it and apply it correctly.
Knowing the background to what we are reading helps us better understand the passage. Commentaries and online resources can help us with such.
Knowing the mood of the author helps you better understand his message.
The apostles often quoted the OT from the Greek version of it called the Septuagint; thus don't be surprised that it doesn't line up exactly with our OT translated from the Hebrew. Plus, they paraphrased at times, all under the inspiration of God.
Since the Bible is God’s perfect word, if you think you’ve found an error in the Bible, it’s your error, not God’s! Many people think they’ve found a contradiction, when it may only be a contrasting statement, not a contradictory statement.
“Humbly accept the word” We don’t stand in judgment on it, it stands in judgment on us.
Keep in mind that the grand theme of the Bible is Jesus.
Don’t spiritualize the Scriptures. Those who spiritualize tell spiritual lies. Don’t read spiritual hidden meanings about Jesus into everything.
The plain thing is the main thing. And the main thing is the plain thing.
Recognize the progress of revelation. The NT supersedes the OT.
Understand Hebrew poetry- the second line gives insight into the first line.
The context of a word determines its meaning. A text without a context is a pretext.
Words also need to be understood in their historical context.
Interpret difficult verses in light of clear ones.
Look for repeated words or phrases to help you discover what the author is emphasizing. The main thing is the plain thing.
Look for repeated words or phrases to help you discover what the author is emphasizing. The main thing is the plain thing.
Look for major Bible themes as you read.
God is the true hero of the book.
The Key Components of Accurate Bible Study
1.-Observation- (What does it say?) Get the F.A.C.T.S. like a CSI detective- Fast Facts- Ask Questions, Check for key words, Title and Summarize your report.
2.Interpretation- (What does it mean?) Like an explorer, interpret the ancient passageway passage by studying the Context, Cross references, Commentaries and Concordances. Tools such as Biblehub.com can be a great help here.
3.Application- (What does it mean for me?) Like a sports doctor, apply the remedy to where it is most needed. Ask the SPEAK questions to "hear from God's word."

1.- In the beginning we read in Jonah 1:1-2 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
ReplyDelete"Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city..." Here we see God speaking to Jonah giving him a direct command with a specific purpose of what He wanted him to do. But Jonah chose to disobey God because he feared what might happen to him if he should go to Nineveh.
Many times in my own life I have heard God calling me to do so something and I have been too afraid to move forward for whatever reason, not always with the same terrible consequences as with Jonah being in the middle of a storm. But for sure by not obeying God I have missed out on many blessings that He had in store for me be. By not trusting in Him I missed out on an opportunity to grow closed to Him.
May our hearts always be open to His voice never doubting that He is always with us no matter what is is calling us to do.
2.- Did it
Very good Roger!
DeleteWhen He calls we have a choice to make, adjust our lives to that assignment or reject Him and miss out on what He has in store for us. I'm glad that you have responded to the call. God is surely using you and growing you Roger. It is an encouragement to see.
Delete1- Now let's read about Job and Jesus. Read Job 23:12 and Matthew 4:3-4. What impresses you as you think about these two passages? This is exactly what I needed to hear. I was that christian who always put off gods word. I knew deep down that I needed his word to grow but I didn't want to change my sinful lifestyle. I chose milk over soild food. This scripture opened my eyes even more to why I need to be in gods word daily. Just these past couple days of being in the word. I feel god already working in me and giving me knowledge.
ReplyDelete2.- Write out Job 23:12 on your MP3 card. Pray that God would increase your hunger for His word. Once you’ve written it down, please simply write “Did It.” in your Post a Comment response on the Home page. Did it!!
3.-Will you join us in the manly commitment to be Unstoppable in God's word- No Scripture, no sleep? Yes or No (Read the explanation below before answering.) Yes
I am laughing with joy James! So happy for you! Way to grow!
DeleteAwesome James. Glad Gods already speaking to you and molding you. Glad you made that commitment to be in the Word daily. It will revolutionize your walk.
DeleteGod always opens our eyes to His words. We have a choice to listen or not to listen to God. He gave us free will for a reason. He wants to see if we are going to glorify Him or glorify the flesh. Keep your eyes on the prize James and you will glorify God.
Deletelove your transparency; the only one who matters already knows. May we be wind in your sails James.
DeleteAmen James! So glad to hear that God is working in different areas in your life... Good to see the commitment your setting forth
Delete1. In verse 3, I found it interesting that the Author specifically mentions that Jonah paid a fare to flee from God. Simply, I believe we do pay something when we flee or run or be disobedient. He pay the consequences of our disobedience, which could mean missing out on the true blessings God wants to give us or how He wants to truly use us. I think about Samson, God had a great plan to use him to deliver Israel from the Philistines, but Samson had his own plans as well and turned away from God and followed his own desires and thoughts. Ultimately, God used him, just like Jonah, but it came at a cost.
ReplyDelete"...After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord." Jonah 1:3
2. Did it.
Very good point and cross ref to Samson Eddie. (That big cruise ticket must have set back his savings as well. If he was married, he'd be in hot water with the Mrs.:)
DeleteJonah 1:3b
ReplyDelete...he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.
1. Perhaps Jonah felt that he was not good enough or was too scared to teach word of God. It reminded me of James 3:1
Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
P- Is there a Principle to follow or a Promise to claim or a Prayer to also utter? Always obey God.
E- Is there an Example to follow or an Error to avoid? We should not run from God's calling.
A-Is there an Answer to a problem I’ve had or an Action to take? I pray that we continue to hide His word in our hearts and train diligently.
K-Is their Knowledge for which I can praise or thank God? I thank God that he has provided the necessary tools to teach the word of God.
2. Did it. Took down A.
Sam I like the way you answered all the s.p.e.a.k. questions.
DeleteSimply excellent Sam!
Delete1.I think we like Jonah have all disobeyed God. But where can we go to flee from God answer nowhere. The other thing that I liked was when Jonah went down and fell asleep I think that describes people that go into depression. But God has a way of waking us up and providing the means to get us where he wants us. In Jonas case he provided the great fish.
ReplyDelete2. Did it.
Good insight George regarding depression and sleep. Some have said that depression is often anger turned inward. Jonah was certainly upset about his mission as he reveals in ch.4. The joy of the Lord is our strength.
DeleteTo Job and Jesus the word of the Father God was more important than food for their
ReplyDeletebody their desire to do God's will was more important to them.
We all should feel the same way in are life's to put God's word's first because we know
It is more important to feed the soul than body.

Brother John, it's great to see you have hit the ground running. Keep up the good works :-)
DeleteJohn you are so right that we need to put the word of God first in out lives. You are doing a great job being faithful to your commitment to seek God everyday with us through M3. Keep up the good work. I am always praying for you and your family.
DeleteJohn, you have made a life shaping commitment to be unstoppable in God's word and we congratulate you!
Delete1. Jonah 1:6 "The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”
ReplyDeleteJonah 1:11 "The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they (Sailors) asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”
It's interesting that the Captain sought Jonah below deck and ordered him to plead with his God in the hopes that they would not perish. Later, the sailors asked Jonah, what was it going to take to get him to cooperate (What should we do to you?).
Jonah was obstinate (firmly or stubbornly adhering to one's purpose, opinion, etc.; not yielding to argument, persuasion, or entreaty. Dictionary.com) He didn't follow God's directive, so why would we expect him to obey the Captain or give in to the sailor's threats. Jonah dug his heels and refused to cooperate even to the point of death, or so he thought! Jonah wasn't necessarily seeking his death, he was seeking his comfort. When he stared death in the face, he called out to God (Jonah 2:1"From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God.")
"Be careful what you ask, you may just get it!" (Author unknown to me)
"Sometimes you have to get what you want, to know that it's not what you want!" (My own thoughts)
"God is not so much interested in our comforts, as much as he is in our character" (Author unknown to me)
"He (Jesus) must become greater; I must become less.” John 3:30
2. E- Is there an Example to follow or an Error to avoid? I've learned not to insist on getting my own way, not to be so dogmatic!
Did it :-)
Jonah had a great quality aimed in the wrong direction.
DeleteThank you Robert for more great insights. You are also good for good quotes. Today you shared three very good ones. The one I like the best is yours! "Sometimes you have to get what you want, to know that it's not what you want!"
DeleteRobert, I also enjoyed talking with you last Sunday and enjoyed your post today!
Delete4th day 1) Now let's read about Job and Jesus. Read Job 23:12 and Matthew 4:3-4. What impresses you as you think about these two passages? What catches me immediately is "man shall not live on bread alone", shall not is a direct command from God. To live on bread alone is living a dead life, we are made in God,s image, His creation, surly God is not dead. God want's our hunger to be of His Word, 24/7. God's Word's are treasure, spiritually nourishing us, God does not want us to store and lock up all this knowledge he has store in us. He want's us to go out and share it with everyone. 2) Did it.
ReplyDeletegreat job personalizing it.
DeleteGood thoughts Armando!
Delete3) yes
ReplyDeleteYes! Making the commitment to be daily in God's word make you unstoppable. This is such a life transforming thing.
Delete1- When I read Jonah 1:3 "But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish." I see myself in him from time to time. I know that God has instructed me to do task for Him in the past but I decided to do the task my own way or not at all. With that being said I know I have been disobedient to God and I have repented many times. I know I have to do the will of God and stop doing my own will.
ReplyDelete2-Did it.
Brother Mike, I'm right there with you "I know I have to do the will of God and stop doing my own will." Great job :-)
DeleteMike I can surely relate to what you are saying about not following God's instructions and doing things our own way.
DeleteSo glad that you are part of M3 because together we can fight the lies of the enemy that wants us to rely on ourselves instead of God. Thus the importance of being daily in the Word like we have all been doing for the past couple of month.
Will be praying for you.
Mike, so glad you have bonded yourself to a great band of brothers. Together we are helping each other to obey the mission the Lord has given us. we are not running from but to people with God's word.

ReplyDeleteS:Jonah was running form the clear command of God because of his personal Grudge. Take care that your personal feeling don't become obstacles to Gods commands.
P: God at times will create pressure around you to create submission with in you.
E: Avoid flagrant disobedience
A: Jonah verbalized that he was responsible for the misery of others because the consequences of his personal failures splashed heavily upon them.
K: Thank you Father for allowing us to know that the prodigal is not only received but sought after with violent strength.
2: Did it.
Antonio, I love the way that God did SPEAK to you through Jonah Chapter #1.
DeleteBeautifully stated Antonio! I quoted you in the margin of my Bible in Jonah 1.-God at times will create pressure around you to create submission with in you.
DeleteGreat quote!
Delete1 - Now let's read about Job and Jesus. Read Job 23:12 and Matthew 4:3-4. What impresses you as you think about these two passages?
ReplyDeleteWhat impressed me is that they both valued the work of God over themselves. At what was probably the worst time in Job’s life he still treasured God’s word above all else and stayed true to God. Jesus relied on the word of God for strength after fasting for 40 days when it would have been easy for him to turn the stones into bread.

3 - Will you join us in the manly commitment to be Unstoppable in God's word- No Scripture, no sleep? Yes
Your doing great digging into those scriptures George. Both Job and Jesus expressed a greater desire for the spiritual food of the Word of God then for physical food necessary for their bodies. May the Lord also give you a greater hunger for His eternal Words of life.
DeleteExcellent George! Very good insights and so glad you have made the Unstoppable commitment.
DeleteGeorge, great seeing you being unstoppable and seeking God in so many ways!
Delete1.Re-read then share one or more ways from Jonah Chpt 1 that SPEAKS to you.
ReplyDeletea) Sin will foolishly cause us to go out of our way to avoid God's presence. Just as Jonah's sin of disobedience, caused him to foolishly go on a trip in the the opposite direction of where God called him, so sin can foolishly cause us to turn to distractions as a way of avoiding God's presence in our life. (An error not to avoid)
b) When we flee God's presences, eventually God will get our attention again – but it may be the hard way. Jonah was thrown overboard and swallowed by a fish. (A principle to remember)
c) Our waywardness from God's presence, usually effects many others around us. The sailors on the ship that Jonah traveled on nearly lost their lives. (A principle to remember)
d) Although God would prefer to use, we are not necessary for God to reveal His Glory to others. Despite Jonah's disobedience and rebellion, God's glory was revealed to the sailors who sacrificed and made vows to Him after dumping Jonah. ( A praise that God's Glory was honored by those that did not know Him)

Very good applications Dave! Excellent!
Delete1- Now let's read about Job and Jesus. Read Job 23:12 and Matthew 4:3-4. What impresses you as you think about these two passages?
ReplyDeleteJob 23:12
I have not departed from the commands of his lips;
I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.
Matthew 4:3-4
The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Its what M3 is all about, No Scripture, No Sleep! We do make time for other things and some of us put aside reading the Bible because we tend to focus on living physically. It is even more important to live spiritually and we must remind each other on that.
2.- Write out Job 23:12 on your MP3 card. Pray that God would increase your hunger for His word. Once you’ve written it down, please simply write “Did It.” in your Post a Comment response on the Home page.

Excellent Chuy! You've got what is takes to be unstoppable!
DeleteThat's a great commitment Chuy. It's one that I tried to make to myself, but always failed at some point. I would cave in to my own excuses. But some how making that commitment before many brothers who are striving to make the same commitment has encouraged me to strive harder also, and Praise God it has become a good habit that I now enjoy doing.
Delete1. Jonah 1:17 Spoke to me in that in spite of Jonah's sin, God provide a chance for him to be redeemed as God provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah and for him to survive in the stomach of the fish for 3 days. God/ Jesus demonstrate miracles all the time providing evidence of their glorious power and love. When we believe in the cross and all that it signifies, he unites us with Christ and redeems us. Avoid sin as we follow and live as Jesus and have faith always as you listen to the Lord's voice
ReplyDelete2. Did it
Very good Jack! Your good words got me thinking- As with Jonah, in spite of our sins, God provided an opportunity for us to be redeemed by providing a great Savior.
Delete1. What I found interesting about the reading was how selfish Jonah showed himself to be throughout. Not only would he not go to Nineveh, but he attempted to sleep as the others panicked and scrambled about in fear of the storm which he knew was caused by his disobedience. Lastly rather than relieve them of the burden he brought on them by simply jumping overboard since he knew the storm would stop, he made them suffer longer and eventually dirty their hands and feel guilty for having had to throw him overboard.
ReplyDelete2. Did it.
Excellent insights Kenntrayle! Very good! May the Lord use your good writing skills to encourage many others.

ReplyDeleteS - Lets confess when God is causing us to adjust and we dont want to adjust. (this is the pinicale time to respond imediately and the time that He will begin to activate your life on mission).
P - Let us Proclaim that God in the highest will acomplish what he sets out to acomplish; with or without us. Let us pray that we are humbly obident to God and that we repond immediately, not being shamed with guilt as the outsider looking in at how God could have used us
E - Let us have lives as examples through valeys and through mountain tops, but most of all accountable to our testimony to Jesus Christ
A - My bold step is responding in faith. This is not cliche as our faith is always put to the test as this is a measure for growth and faith determines that we REALLY trust God
K - I am Greatful for the knowledge imparted from friends and faily and the Holy Spirit that continually build upon a great relationship

Delete1. What strikes me is that Jonah was not a new believer, uncertain of God's word or low in faith. He was a prophet and even with having a spiritual connection to God above other men, he intentionally disregarded God's direction for him. Boy, what a steep spiritual climb to be a manly man if heavy spiritual hitters like Jonah (and Elijah, who also fled and got Stuck In a cave). Lord, may your word and spirit fill me and guide me and may this brotherhood of men support me, sustain me and correct me if I stray from your direction.
ReplyDeleteDid it
Good point and prayer Daniel. Interestingly both Jonah and Elijah distanced themselves from any band of brothers to help and encourage them. It is not good for man to be alone. We are to be devoted to one another in brotherly love and encourage one another daily so that none of us be hardened or led astray by sin's deceitfulness. I'm glad you know these things and are a vital part of this band of brothers. God bless you!

Manny times have I been and caught my self thinking that I have "fled" from the Lord to either run away from a calling (commandments) or thinking "God won't see me do this"(something not good)... Praise God that He is all merciful and His love full and complete and receiving back with open arms.

P- Is there a Principle to follow or a Promise to claim or a Prayer to also utter?- Don't run from the God. His plans are good for us

A-Is there an Answer to a problem I’ve had or an Action to take?- I would have instead of running from God run to God.
K-Is their Knowledge for which I can praise or thank God? -God is always faithful. He knows what is best for us.

Very good Vince!
ReplyDeleteOne thing struck me tremendously-- when Jonah decided to disobey God, he went to Joppa with some money in his pocket and immediately caught a ship to Tarshish. I'm sure in those days, ships did not leave every 2 hours like our planes and trains do nowadays. Jonah must have thought, I have the money to pay for my trip, I caught a boat immediately, and I am accepted on this ship and even have a place to get some sound sleep :) According to Jonah, he may have thought that he was being blessed by God (even though he was running from God's directive) because things were going so deceivingly well. Another thing struck me-- during the rough storm on sea, the captain and sailors started to pray and they woke up Jonah and urged him to pray to his God!! After Jonah confessed it was his disobedience to God, that was the reason for the storm, they tried to save Jonah's life by first trying to make it to shore, and then they prayed before they did what Jonah told them to do (throw him overboard) and then, the storm calmed down. God then saves Jonah by having him swallowed by a big fish where he remains for three days and 3 nights. Wow, what mercy the Father shows us!!!
ReplyDeleteSeveral morals of the story: Always obey God the first time He speaks! Also, In verse 12, Jonah knew that he was the reason for the storm, thereby, affecting and endangering everyone with him on the ship. It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God, if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth!!
