Fri.7.10.15...Do You Belong to God?...Prov.31:1-9

This has been a great study through Proverbs! We have now come to the last chapter in the book. Please read just verses 1-9 of chapter 31 now. Then come back to my comments below on it.

Evidently chapter 31 was not written by King Solomon. The introductory verse declares the words are "The sayings of King Lemuel..." Oddly, we know of no king of Israel bearing that name. However, it's interesting to note that his name means, "Belonging to God." Thus, many Bible scholars take his name to represent the model of an ideal king, who has given himself entirely to God. Of course all mankind belongs to God in the sense that He made them. But man has rebelled and disowned their Creator and Redeemer. Because of this, unsaved mankind no longer belongs to God. To even the religious leaders, Jesus said, "You belong to your father the devil and you want to carry out your father's desires" John 8:44. That's why we need to share the good news with people, that they might become "people belonging to God" 1 Pet.2:9.

This ideal leader, King Lemuel, is being mentored by his mother in this passage. This is fitting, because as you probably know, the last portion of this final chapter of Proverbs presents the ideal wife and mother. She had not only given birth to Lemuel, but vowed him to the Lord, calling him "son of my womb, O son of my vows." She reminds me of Hannah who vowed and dedicated her son Samuel to entirely belong to the Lord (1 Sam.1). That's a wonderful thing, but you don't have to have been dedicated to the Lord to live a life of dedication. Many of you have already prayed a prayer of dedication to entirely belong to the Lord. So what does a life entirely belonging to the Lord look like? Lemuel's mother gives us a few thoughts regarding this.

First she warns Lemuel not to spend his strength on women "who ruin kings." Sadly, Solomon did just the opposite. "King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. They were from nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been" 1 Kings 11:1-4. It's shocking to think that Solomon, who had been given so much wisdom, didn't heed it later in life. This underscores the danger of drifting, of not having any accountability to others who could point out such drifting early on. He was king and did as he pleased. O to belong to the Lord, not to our passions. How are you doing in this area? Are you ruling over your passions, or are they ruling over you? Are you being led astray by women or porn? If you don't conquer it, it will be the ruin of your life. "Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with it's passions and lusts" Gal.5:24. This initial time of salvation/crucifixion requires continual renunciations to our passions and lusts. So keep fighting the good fight.

Next King Lemuel's mother warns him not to ruin his life craving beer and wine. There are men in M3 such as Guillermo who has openly shared how alcohol ruined his life. He now seeks to help others recover from that ruinous addiction. I happen to be a tea total-er, in part because I never liked the taste of alcohol when I first tried it. I know Scripture condemns drunkenness, not the mere drinking of wine, but I plead with you as King Lemuel's mother did- don't crave it. Don't turn to it as your comfort. Those who are to be comforted with it are "those who are perishing" 31:6. Alcohol was given to numb the pain of those dying in battle. I'm not saying there is no other time a person may drink alcohol, I'm simply pleading that if you are belonging to it, and not to God's best for you, you need to forsake it. God is trying to spare you from much ruin. "Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine" Prov.23:30-31. Have the love and courage to speak to someone with a drinking problem. Certainly a man's best friend would get involved.

Finally, King Lemuel's mother encourages him to use his position, influence and voice for good- "Speak up for those who cannot speak up for themselves..." 31:8. Though we do not hold some high government office, we can speak up in our office, home or school. We can speak up on behalf of those who are being oppressed by man or by the enemy. May we use our voice to share the word of God. I'm so glad you are sharing the life transforming truth with others regularly. It may not make the front page, but it is making it's way to the ears of our Great King. Keep living the life that makes it clear that you belong to him.

1.- How would you describe some of the characteristics of a man who has given himself to the Lord, who sees himself belonging to the Lord, no longer to himself?

"He (Christ) died for all that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again" 2 Cor.5:15.

2.- As you read through Prov.31:1-9, pick out a verse and then find a cross reference verse to the one you picked and share it with us. If you don't have a Bible that has cross references, there are online Bible helps which can help you with that, such as BibleHub.com. Here's my tutorial video on it, if you haven't seen it before- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCJl7GAAbLM

I like what Louis Ortiz shared about his outreach opportunity. He wrote, "I forgot what day it was, but it was one of my last days at my old job. A man came wanting to enter the building. We are not supposed to let anyone in without a membership. I told the guy "I can't let you in, but if you'd like, I can walk with you to see if you can spot your friend you're looking for." He agreed so we walked and talked a bit. He was telling me that the night before he was riding his bike and a car hit him. He landed in the hospital and had just gotten out that morning. So we talked a bit more and as we were making our way back to the exit, I offered him a card. He was pretty excited about the fact that it said Greatest Mini-movies. I hope he had a chance to watch them." Way to go Louis!

  4. 1- such man loves like God has loved us. He isn't selfish but rather what he does he does in the interest of others. He follows the pattern in Colossians 3. He is compassionate with friends, family and strangers alike. He doesn't coward when the world tells him what a "manly man" is supposed to look like.

Here is a poem on being a manly man.

  6. 1.- How would you describe some of the characteristics of a man who has given himself to the Lord, who sees himself belonging to the Lord, no longer to himself? I think these two Scriptures answer the question. Psa.37.4.Take delight in the Lord , and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Luk.10.27. He answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ ; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”

2Pro.31.5. "lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights." When you get drunk you forget what you were doing.

One that sets an example for his friends and family. He is devoted in the word and his actions speak louder then his words. Never boastful or fast to anger.

    2. Proverbs 31: 4-5. It is not for kings, O Lemuel,
it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to take strong drink, 5 lest they drink and forget what has been decreed and pervert the rights of all the afflicted.

  16. 1) Some of the characteristics of a man who has given himself to the Lord, who sees himself belonging to the Lord, no longer to himself are:
    1) He would be devoted to spending time with God in prayer and in the Word - actively applying it in his life.
    2) He would be controlled by the Spirit of God and exhibit the fruits of the Spirit.
    3) He would be a loving spouse, and father, spiritually leading his family to worship and serve the Lord.
    4) He would be using his spiritual gifts in ministry and serving in the church.
    5) He would have a good reputation before his neighbors and co-workers.
6)He would be concerned for the spiritual condition of others that he meets.
7)He would make time to encourage and mentor younger Christians and build them up in the Lord.
8)He would seek the Lord's wisdom and guidance before making important decisions.
9)He would use his time wisely and not wasting it all on trivial things like watching TV or playing video games.

    2) Proverbs 30:7 - Let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more.
Cross Reference: 2 Corinthians 8:2 > In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.
I found many cross references to the word poverty. Many foolish non-actions and wrong actions can result in bringing poverty. Sometimes God brings it as punishment and judgment. And some times He permits it to teach humility in one's own abilities and to build dependence upon God's abilities. There are other ways to deal with poverty then the world's way to just surrender to it and cope with it by drinking. 2 Corinthians 8:2 records believers that were not just in extreme poverty but were also going though a severe trial. Yet without drinking, they were overflowing in joy and managed to richly give from their little. Even in their poverty, they were more then content in Christ.

  25. Thanks Dave for letting me be an example, I try to do my best at helping, but I'm living proof of anger, resentment, desperation, frustration over my consequences of my past. I wish I would have know proverbs 31 earlier in my life, I would have probably made better decisions. But any help I can be please let me know. I will be as consistent as I possibly can here on the blog

    1. Thanks you Guillermo!
The way to be as consistent as possible is by determining to be unstoppable- No Scripture, no sleep. The highest priority of my day is to spend time with my Father in His word and with my brothers on the blog. I will not go to sleep until I do that. Give yourself to that and see the difference it makes. It's not easy, but it's worth it and it works. :)

To place anything here there is som much we could say and many ways to describe from what we stand for being a part of M3 to speaking humanely that we support and love another as a Samaritan would as we would to a neighbor. From providing all the way to courageously standing for righteousness.
But in perspective as I was reading through Romans in ch 7 we must die to Christ and as long as we live be changed into the image of Christ (man) who is the perfect man who gives himself to the lord.

Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭31‬:‭9‬ ESV)
Verse 31:9 stuck out to me as some are called to battle for the defenseless. I would compare to
    Isaiah 1:17
Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.

  27. 1: being humble.
Breaking bread with brothers in Christ.
    Fellowship.
    Worshipping.
    Speaking with praise.

2: Proverbs 31:8 is something i tend to do a lot in my life.

speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.

Cross reference: Psalms 82:3-4 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the affiliated and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

  28. 1) I think a major one in my eyes is a man that is humble and teachable. When I see someone who's heart is open to learn what the word or other seasoned believers have to say in his life, I see a person who will go far in the Lord. It never fails.

    2) Proverbs 31:3 "Do not spend your strength on women, your vigor on those who ruin kings."

    Cross Reference scripture is:

Proverbs 7:26-27 "Many are the victims she has brought down; her slain are a mighty throng. Her house is a highway to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death."

  29. 1 He is a good steward of his Time, Talents and Treasures. He has a servant's heart.

2 Proverbs 31:8 cross reference with Job 29:12
because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist them.

  33. 1. I think Phil. 3:7-11 sums this up well, by saying "But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead."

A man who truly desires to KNOW Christ personally and to see things thru God's perspective (Wisdom), filtered thru the Word of God.

    2. Prov 31:9 says "Open your mouth, judge righteously, And defend the rights of the afflicted and needy." A couple of good cross references are: Leviticus 19:15 "'Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly." and Proverbs 29:7 "The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern."

  34. 1. One who is mature in the Lord or maturing and setting his eyes to Christ.
One who professes his faith in Christ but also lives & does the works in faith.
One who surrender himself(flesh),carries the calling,mission,co-mission that God has given him.
Lives by grace that God has given us, also in return give back that grace to others.

    Proverbs 31:8
Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all of all the unfortunate
    Job 29:12
Because I delivered the poor who cried for help, And the orphan who had no helper.

  35. A man who has surrendered his life to the Lord acts in accordance with God's law. He does not rely on his own wisdom, but on the wisdom of Holy Scripture. He speaks only to bring glory to God, to speak to others of Him, to sooth the downtrodden and lift up the fallen. He forgives and does not take account of offenses. He loves fiercely, is slow to anger, and quick to catch himself when anger overcomes him. He lives to reflect God's love and compassion. He does not boast of his ability, but thanks the Lord for his ability to do even the smallest good.

Proverbs 31:9 "Open your mouth, judge righteously, And defend the rights of the afflicted and needy."
Isaiah 1:17 "Learn to do good; Seek justice, Reprove the ruthless, Defend the orphan, Plead for the widow."

I am not one to enter into an argument of my own accord. In this regard, I'm a fairly passive, Type B guy. That playbook gets tossed completely out the window when I see someone who can't defend themselves being mistreated, or someone of authority abusing their power. The challenge comes with guarding what comes out of my mouth in times like these when my heart is set ablaze. Too little prudence and my tongue becomes a weapon of mass destruction. Too much, and I do no favor to the one being oppressed. Still, it is important not to turn a blind eye to the oppressed and needy, especially when God has blessed us with the weapon to wage war against His enemies and the enemies of His children: the wisdom of Scripture. Matthew 25:40 "The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'"
