Solomon said, “I saw…” As with the man in the gorilla suit,
it really makes a big difference what you focus on. Interestingly, God is not
named or evidently focused on in this chapter. This is life as “I see it” not
as God sees it in this chapter. Here’s a current example of such. If you focus
on all the bad news aired on TV, you can forget about good things people do in our world and become very pessimistic. Solomon had
become such. He declared, “I saw that all labor and all achievement spring from
man’s envy of his neighbor” 4:4. But that’s certainly not true of all people.
There are plenty of good Samaritans. We Christians are also motivated to love our
neighbor, not to envy him. We are happy to do Acts of kindness for the benefit of others
and for God’s glory. (Be on the lookout to do such and put your points in the A column.) But if you interview a police officer who has worked in a crime-ridden
neighborhood for many years, he too may see things from a very pessimistic view. However,
I am not wanting us to swing to the other extreme, to think that people are
wonderful. That’s a false view as well. We ought not be overly optimistic or
pessimistic, but realistic. This world is filled with people who do beautiful,
loving things, but sometimes even those same people may end up doing very unloving things. “The best of men are men at best.” We all need a Savior.
Interestingly, Solomon uses the word “better” 4 times
in this chapter alone, and he repeatedly uses it throughout the book. A better
life can be had and it starts by making better choices. For example,
Solomon declares, “Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls
with toil and chasing after the wind” 4:6. In other words, it’s good to have a
work/life balance- to have on the one hand, work and on the other hand,
tranquility. Pity the man who doesn’t know when to let go of work, who never
stops working to enjoy his God given life. What a “miserable
business.”
We need people around us to help us live in balance. It is
not good for man to be alone. A spouse can be a great help in this matter, but
so can a good friend. “Two are better
than one because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his
friend can help him up. But pity the man who has no one to help him up!...Though
one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is
not easily broken” 4:9-10,12. Aren’t you glad you are not left alone to carry
out God’s mission? You are in a band of brothers in M3. But you are
also in a squad of soldiers who are committed to you. Better yet, you are in a fire team of
a few who will especially fight for you and you for them. They are your
wingmen, your buddies, the ones that will help you up when you fall down. But it would be better if we focused,
not on what they can do for you, but on what you can do for them. Be a good friend to your fire teammates. If a man is feeling overpowered or
overwhelmed, fight for him. If he sends out a broken arrow text to your squad, you
make sure to be quick to come to his aid. Fight for him also in warfare prayer.
Let’s change the
analogy from fighting for our squad members and fire team brothers to mountain climbing.
We are to help those closest to us to the top.
The ones on your fire team are
your nearest climbing brothers. In God’s kingdom, there are no heroes who are
solo climbers. Honors are given based on how many you help to the top. So help
your brothers to the top. Look for them on the blog and encourage them. Pray
for them regularly. Keep in touch. Return each other’s calls promptly. Choose
to nurture them and claim them as great friends in the making. Also adopt the
new recruits that your teammates bring into your fire team. Encourage them as
if you yourself recruited them. Keep the
vision before you- see each one of you recruiting new
teammates who will eventually form their own fire teams. That's how you take
others to the top of the mountain. That's how you multiply MANLY men. That's
how you build a great, eternal impact and legacy with your life.
Speaking of Solomon’s theme here of “better” choices, you have chosen the better life by far. So many other men are merely fans in the stands; they are not in the game. They merely gaze at the mountain; they are not climbing and conquering. They have no legacy of men they are multiplying. We want to change that for them. “O Lord, use us to activate the sidelined saints. You have such a better life for them. Thank you so much for my brothers in M3 who have chosen the better path of life. Use us all greatly for the good of many and your glory.”

1.- Contact your fire team brothers today. Find out who they are seeking to recruit. Then write down those men’s names and seek to keep them in prayer that they might soon join your fire team. (Tomorrow I’ll ask you for their names, so make sure you find out today.) Then together we'll take them to the top of the mountain. Via the blog, your good example and encouragement, we will help them mature and multiply.
2.- Read Eccles. 4 and pick out one verse that grabs your
interest. Write it out along with some of your good thoughts on it. Then look
for others to share it with. That’s such a better way than the old way
of reading and forgetting what we read. The better the choices we make, the
better lives we build for ourselves and others.

I'm happy to say that Ed Lake and his family left Singapore and safely arrived in their new home in Kazakhstan Friday where Ed will be teaching. Thank You Father!
Congratulations to Squad 4 with an average of 30.5 points last week! They just nosed out Squad 5 with 30.2. But Roger V. came back halfway through the week from mountain climbing in Ecuador, so beware; he is ever so faithful. You will also note that fire teams are now being honored for their scoring. Congratulations to Fire Team 2 of Squad 4- Ricardo, Mark and Horacio put up an average of 36.6 points!
Men, don't let your fire team down. Please remember to put up your points before you leave the blog each day. It's just what we do. If you see that one of your fire teammates is not putting up his points, by all means, remind him. Thanks for making everyone's life just a bit easier by being faithful :) Be unstoppable!

"There's strength in numbers" (Author unknown)
My you are up early Robert! You're in beast mode, more than sabbatical mode today :)
DeleteThere is strength in numbers, indeed, brother. How easily a twig breaks with the slightest force, yet how difficult it becomes to break even a single twig when it is bundled with ten more just like it. Alone we are weak and vulnerable. Together, we are unbreakable.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteWhen I tried studying or reading the Bible on my own , I was easily distracted. Now I have lots of encouragement from M3 brothers. Yes , there is strength in numbers. Thank, Robert.
DeleteGot your back Robert!
DeleteAmen glad to have brothers in M3 behind me.
Delete1. Will contact team.
ReplyDelete2.Ecc 4:12Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Having a spotter, a wingman, a coverman, a teammate, a sidekick, a tag team partner to walk along side with in life is a blessing. Thankful God has blessed me with some.
You are well connected and well loved Eddie :)
DeleteAmen, brother. The most elite and most heroic forces on Earth, from the soldiers who charge into battle to the firemen who charge in burning buildings, all have this in common about them: neither force ever fights alone. God made us to live in communion with Him and with each other...to be pillars of support for one another.
DeleteAmen God is surely good to bless us with brothers that are there to help us.
Delete1. I will reach out to my fireteam after work today.
ReplyDelete2. Ecclesiastes 4:1 Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed—and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors—and they have no comforter.
As men of God, we must avoid becoming callous and numb to the suffering experienced by others around us. We live in a nation where services are available to care for the sick, poor, and hungry, but many know nothing of these services or how to access them. Many are simply unable to access them given their legal status in this country. We must not let the comforts of our age blind us to the reality that many still live in this country in conditions that we might attribute to a "third-world country." If we adopt that attitude that God or the government will provide for those in need, then we have abandoned our calling to be a reflection of God's love. Jesus Christ did not spend His days at the temple praying for God's mercy upon the oppressed and down-trodden. He went out to meet them where they were, laid His own hands upon them, prayed over them, and lifted them out of their lame state.
Granted, we are not miracle workers as Christ was. Few, if any, of us could claim to have ever told a blind man to see, and he saw. Fewer still can claim to have cured a gravely ill person of their illness with our words alone. We do, however, carry a spark of the Divine within us. The Holy Spirit can truly work miracles through us, and perhaps its greatest gift is the gift of courage to do anything at all. We can do so much more for others on our feet than on our knees. Prayer is essential to our spiritual life, but God is calling each of us to be the answer to someone's prayer each day, whether that be someone dear to us or a complete stranger. A kind word, a loving gesture, a helping hand, and loaf of bread...these are the miracles we ARE capable of. God is calling us to react to the oppression that we see, to shine a light upon it, and to start a fire with the divine spark within us.
Great Words my brother. I pray that many men answer that call my brother. We need to shine that light and to start a fire with the divine spark within us.
DeleteGod bless.
Excellent Osiris!
DeleteWe must not be asleep in the light. Reminds me of Keith Green's powerful song- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik-XOVZcwow
The gift of courage, is a great gift.
Delete“Better was a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who no longer knew how to take advice.” Ecclesiastes 4:13 ESV
ReplyDeleteI like this because I think it is important to take advice and counsel from others. One will never know everything. I feel those who don't take advice start to rely only on themselves and forget God has all the answers. I also believe you start living a sinful life if you don't seek advice.
Wise man! Great chatting with you yesterday James.
DeleteI agree, James . Well put.
DeleteGood thoughts James! Definitely agree 100%
Delete1. To Team 5: the person I have been reaching out to is Jose M. Thank you.
ReplyDelete2. Eccles.4:13 "Better was a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who no longer knew how to take advice..."
Great reminder that no matter where we are in life we should always be seeking after wisdom. We will never be at the point where we know everything in this life, so we must continually seek the wisdom that comes from God.
Good reminder to be seeking wisdom.
DeleteYou just need to contact your fire team brothers, not all in your squad 5.
1. Called members of squad 4 team 1.
ReplyDelete2. There is still a lot of opression going on around the world. Thank God that we have God in our lives to help us through some of the difficult times. Ecc.4.1
" Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed— and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors— and they have no comforter."
Thanks George for caring for all the men in your squad- both of fire team 1 and 2. You have a good shepherds heart.
Delete1- Yesterday I shared M3 with a the guy I co-lead the junior high group for the children s ministry. He was interested in it. His name is Matt Lee.
ReplyDelete2- Ecclesiastes 4:13
Better was a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who no longer knew how to take advice.
I like how this verse says "who no longer knew". As saying the young person still has time to make the correct choices. An old fool may want to turn things around but in an old age that won't be as easy to do as for a young person who still has their life ahead of them.
1. Good outreach Louis. Please also contact your fire team members.
Delete2. Yes, capitalize on your youth while you have it!

There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”

a miserable business!
i like this one because it explains how even somone can have it all but without christ you have nothing.
Well said Elijah!
Delete1. You got it.
ReplyDelete2.“The fool sits back and takes it easy, His sloth is slow suicide.”
Ecclesiastes 4:5 MSG
I like this verse because it really happens. I see people who retire, don't have a purpose for life, vegg out every day and die 10-20 years before their time because they rust out.
That is sad life. Got to keep busy all the time. Big portion should be in the word of God.
DeleteGlad you're not rusting out, or burning out, but living out Dave!
Delete1. Sent text to squad 2/fire teem 1 member regarding potential M3 recuit.

Not good to work day and night. Making lots of money should not be our focus point. We should have time to enjoy the gift of God. Time allowed for worship, rest, peace, nourishment, family, sleep, .
I like that a lot Louie!
DeleteYahoo, no duplications!
Thanks Sam :)
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10a (NIV) Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:

1 Corinthians 3:6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.
Dear God I pray that You continue to use me and our brothers to help others grow.
Sam, thanks for helping me get back on track with my phone. For a while I thought it was a helpless case . Like you said if either of them falls , one can help the other up.
DeleteGreat cross reference and prayer Sam. I pray that too.
DeleteAmen to that prayer brother.
DeleteEcclesiastes 4:5-6New Century Version (NCV)
ReplyDelete5 Some say it is foolish to fold your hands and do nothing,
because you will starve to death.
6 Maybe so, but I say it is better to be content
with what little you have.
Otherwise, you will always be struggling for more,
and that is like chasing the wind.
I agree as a fireteam we need stand together. I pray for my fireteam. I know that God has great things in store my fireteam. I can remember when I used to play little league baseball we won championships 4 years in a row. It was not by one players effort but by a team effort. We had each others back. When one guy was down we helped him back up. We never put each other down. We began to grow close like a family. We all pretty much grew up together. I want to take that same attitude with my fireteam brothers.
I really like that comparison Vince!
DeleteCongrats on your little league championships. That must have been a lot of fun :)
Yes Vince teamwork and cooperation!

ReplyDelete2. Ecclesiastes 4:10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!
It's great that we have brothers that are looking to enrich their life's with God's word. We all strive to better ourselves every day, but what better way then with people with common goals. We all fall but it's great to see that you can reach out and have someone praying or helping you out. Thank you brothers for all the praying and great advice.
Yes indeed Horacio! Well said.
DeleteThank you, Horacio, for your encouraging words.
DeleteAmen, it surely is great to have other brothers praying for you.

This too is meaningless— a miserable business!
We need to be concerned with what really is important and thats trusting and being close to the
Lord. Fame and success will not bring eternal happiness. Those are short term.
Right on Chuy. Famous men have revealed how empty such fame was. The head of General Motors, Lee Iacoca, said "Fame is for the birds." Yet the media still glamorizes the rich and the famous.
DeleteYou brought out the meaning very well. Thanks, Chuy.

Bueno Jose. Look forward to talking together soon.
DeleteThen I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. Ecclesiastes 4:4
ReplyDeleteWe work harder trying to out do the people around us and please them so that they end up likening you. Instead we should work to please God and hope that we are working hard enough to make his kingdom known and expand it around the world.
Very good Andre! Your words remind me of the way many people behave on Facebook, trying to get people to "Like" them and also working hard to outdo others. Meaningless, meaningless.
DeleteThis is one I didn't fully understand. Thanks for bringing out the meaning of this verse.
DeleteVery true, Andre! We should focus on God.

ReplyDelete2) “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” It is better to have brothers to hold each other up, encourage, one another.
(Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NIV)
Glad you are such a brother to encourage your fire team brothers Ricardo!
DeleteRichardo thank you for all you do for all of the M3 brothers!
DeleteEcclesiastes 4:12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
ReplyDeleteThis verse has been an important verse for me for many years ever since I came clean about my self-harm and other addictions. As much power that one may have they will always fail in the end but finding accountability partners to work with and confide in builds a support unit where success comes much easier than failure.
Very good Michael! So glad you personally know the power of TEAM- Together Everyone Accomplished More.

ReplyDelete2) I chose the verse:
Ecclesiastes 4:13 “Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to heed a warning.”
Definitely reflects Solomon's love of Wisdom, how that Gift from God outweighed all his wealth. It is more valuable than what we as humans call valuable. It reminds me of that verse in Proverbs:
“for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.”
Proverbs 8:11 NIV
If a warning is not heeded with Wisdom, what will all the riches in the world do for a fool. Encourages me to chase Wisdom all the more.
I'm chasing wisdom with every post I read. There is so much I can learn from each one of you brothers. William, thank you for your words of Wisdom. Very encouraging.
DeleteGood thoughts, Will! :)
Delete1. Done it.
ReplyDelete2. Ecclesiastes 4:9 two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.
Oscar, thanks for the info you sent me.
DeleteDone
ReplyDeleteI also see verse 4:9-10 as key. I know that we all will be empowered as we continue to act and be as a family. But more than that the connectivity and bond will determine the advancing of the kingdom and the gospel in this tough time
9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.
10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
1 – Working on it
ReplyDelete2 – Ecclesiastes 4: 12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken. This verse is a good reminder that it’s easier to keep out faith when things get tough if your part of a team.
Your a good man George! ;)
DeleteI feel you are the type person one can count on for help.
DeleteEcclesiastes 4:11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?
ReplyDelete1. Did it.
ReplyDelete2. “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up.”
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NASB
What would I do without my friends. Without friends I would not have known the charity of Christ. We need them. We need lots of them. They stand guard over our life. They are a blessing and a circle of accountability. You can scarlet be lonely or hopeless when you have an abundance of them. we all fall down sometimes I need to be picked up and I have have the great blessing to pick others up.
You can count on me to be one of your friends Nick. It is so neat to be able to connect much more often now through M3.
DeleteBlessing brother.
That's why we stand together brother! 'For Him who is greater.'
Delete1) I'm just praying for the faithfulness of my fire team to strive to be unstoppable this week in blogging on M3. Their focus on recruiting will come later.
ReplyDeleteMy family was blessed to have Pastor Asa and his family over for dinner on Sunday. Our families did a lot of catching up on what has been happening in our lives under God's hand over us. I gave Pastor Asa the M3 Website card and shared how M3 was a blessing to me. He told me that he has talked to other men in M3 and was impressed by what he heard. I also gave him a Greatest Mini Movie card and explained how the men in M3 are sowing gospel seeds by giving them out.
2) Ecclesiastes 4:1 Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed— and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors—and they have no comforter.
What a harsh, cruel, tragic and hopeless situation to live in especially without God. Yet is will actually get so much more enormously worst to pass on into a damnable eternity away from God forever. Yet this reminds me of the Corey Ten Boom and her sister, who were arrested for helping hide Jews and were then put into one of the German concentration camps. They endured much oppression, after all was taken away from them, including their freedom. They found comfort and hope in Christ, realizing from their experience that He had willingly suffered much more for them. They saw their oppression as a temporary assignment that would eventually end. They trusted that one day they would be ushered by death into a grand eternity with God that was promised to them.
1) Got the names.
ReplyDelete2) Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. There were several verses in Ecclesiastes 4 that I liked, but I decided to copy down this passage because I liked its message about having friends.
Yes Alex, having friends is very important, but the right ones :).

A good verse that illustrates act of solitary, for us to support, encourage, bound and strengthen each other through fellowship.
Jesus new the importance of the strength of two over one and therefore send the apostles off in pairs.
Mk. 6:7
Calling the 12 to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.

As they may not be ready to commit to this now, pray that God would be working in their hearts and that they would have seeds in their lives to be planted that will flourish. “but better than both is he who has not yet been, and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun. (RSV)
“But most fortunate of all are those who are not yet born. For they have not seen all the evil that is done under the sun. (NLT)
“But better off than both of them is the one who has never existed, who has never seen the evil activity that is done under the sun. (NASB)
“Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the ma’aseh harah that is done under the shemesh. (ORTHODOX JEWISH BIBLE)
This is one of those fun occurrences that make the Word a studied text. A text that many can see and translate and attempt to get close to. - It is close, really close- but those who study Hebrew from a textual archive would see the same ways you can move and translate this here. I have attached the four versions to point out some interesting focus points.
To be fair there is lots of meat in this.
1. I like thinking it is all about the Messiah, Christ, He is better than all of us- who ‘see’ evil in this world. 2. Meanings could also be directly objective- meaning just better is ‘those’ who are not yet born – seeing the world in its current evil state.
3. The natures of pre-existence in the conversations about how the writer sees the origin of the souls we have- being better off in their current non-state.
4. I like the way you can find reference as to Jesus commenting on the same notion in Matthew. 26:24 “The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born."
Like I said, lots of ways to see how this logic can lead to you interesting paths of pre- or post- existence and thought. Or ways to see how, in a fallen state- we struggle with the understandings of what the original intentions of God – not designing this place as fallen- we would have really been better off.
1. It is too late to text my wingmen, so I wil do it tomorrow morning.
ReplyDelete2. Ecc 4:8 says "...... There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. “For whom am I toiling,” he asked, “and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment? I am really trying to have more balance between work and other fruitful activities :)
Sent out a text and will call my brothers and soldiers for Christ.
