Mon.7.13.15...What A Woman!...Prov.31:10-31

We now come to the very end of the book of Proverbs. It is so rich we will take the next two days to glean the gold from it. Dr. Daniel Akin, who is the president of Southeastern Seminary in North Carolina, preached a great sermon on this passage-http://www.danielakin.com/gods-portrait-of-a-wonderful-wife-and-marvelous-mother/ I’ve included his excellent outline of the passage below to enrich you as well. As I was looking it over, my wife came in my dungeon (the nickname for my office in our basement furnace room) and I said, “This describes you!” Yes, she can drive me crazy at times, (just keeping it real:) but she has several great qualities as well. If you're married, I'm sure your wife has great qualities too. Sadly, in  our fallen state, we find it much easier to focus on our spouses' weaknesses. May this passage and outline remind us to praise them for their good qualities. For you single men, may this passage help you note what good qualities to look for in a mate. Be gracious with any gal. Very few would have it all together at a young age. And most still don’t years later. That’s true of us men as well. Also, if we men are to seek after the God of wisdom and reflect a life of wisdom, then many of the following qualities should be ones we strive for as well.

God’s Portrait Of A Wonderful Wife And Marvelous Mother- Proverbs 31:10-31

I.        She is trusted by her husband.
1)  She is virtuous. 31:10
2)  She is valuable. 31:11-12

II.       She is a hard worker.
1)  She uses her hands.  31:13-15
2)  She uses her head.   31:16-19

III.      She is compassionate. 31:20
1)  She helps the poor.
2)  She helps the needy.

IV.      She is ready for tough times.
1)  First she takes care of others. 31:21
2)  Then she takes care of herself. 31:22

V.       She is a blessing to her husband. 31:23
1)  She enhances his reputation.
2)  She extends his responsibilities.

VI.      She is endowed with godly wisdom.
1)  She is active with her hands.  31:24
2)  She is adorned by her character.  31:25
3)  She is appropriate in her speech.  31:26
4)  She is attentive to her home.  31:27

VII.     She is admired by her family.
1)  Her children bless her.  31:28
2)  Her husband praises her. 31:28-29

VIII.    She is honored by the Lord.
1)  She has a godly perspective.  31:30
2)  She receives godly praise.  31:30-31

To be fair, there are women that look up to this Proverbs 31 woman and others that resent her, feeling like what is being described is a perfect woman beyond their ability to emulate. But, the quote in the picture below says it well.

I would also note that this poem isn't a complete picture of an ideal wife. For example, nothing is said of her romantic side. But that is filled in by Solomon in another book of his, The Song of Solomon.

1.- Read Prov.31:10-31. It’s an acrostic poem which we will look at further tomorrow. Pick out one verse or phrase, and look over the above outline as well, then share some of your thoughts about it.

2.- If you are married, think of a few strengths your wife has and praise her for such (31:28). She may not be the world’s greatest at such, but aren’t you glad she is not the opposite of those blossoming qualities? If you are single, please honor your mom for some of her good qualities.

Men, I commend you for being on the lookout for others to share the good news with. Recently, Oscar Vargas shared this good outreach story. “I gave my friend Richard at work a Greatest Mini-movies card last week, but I have not had the opportunity to see him again. He works in a different department in a different building at the work place. I will follow up with him tomorrow to see what he thought about the mini-movies and invite him again to church. I am sure he is very interested in knowing more about Jesus Christ. He likes the stories I share with him, and about how God has changed my life and those who come to the Lord. I will reach out to him again. I am praying for him and other friends. Amen.

Announcements
It was great to honor many men at yesterday's M3 meeting, including the following men who received their Unstoppable award pins- Oscar Nunez, Nic Palhegyi, Horacio De La Torre, Louis Ortiz, William Dykman and Louie Ojeda. Congratulations men!

We also honored the team with the highest score for the month of June and that was Squad 5, led by Jack Rogers, with an average weekly score of 35.45. Way to go men! As you look at the scores for this past week, which do not include your squad leaders, you will see that Squad 5 won this as well. Well done! Also note how much better the other teams could have finished if everyone would remember to put their points on the board as soon as they finish posting on the blog. So if you notice that a brother in your squad or fire team is forgetting to post his scores, please give him a friendly text reminder.

Speaking of posting your points, remember Monday's totals represent your scoring for the weekend.

  1. 1. I am a very blessed man as I have a great wife-- she stands by me no matter what I do and advises me when I'm going in the wrong direction-- maybe a little too often:-)) " Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gates" Proverbs 31:29-31. I need to give more credit to her as it is due.

  3. One morning after a blizzard I was using my snow blower to help out a neighbor, when looked down the block I saw this lady with her two kids shoveling snow. When I went to help her what I really saw was a mother shoveling out a path for two blocks long for her two kids to get to school. Mother of the year award for her.

  4. 1.She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭31‬:‭26‬ NASB) Having a wife with kind wisdom is such a rare combination. There are lots of ladies who are kind but have no wisdom and lots ladies who have wisdom but don't come across as gentle or kind. If you can find one who is both, what a wonderful combo!
    2. Two things that stick out:
    1) my wife is the domestic diva! She works brilliantly cooking, keeping the kids in line, and creating stuff for others! She's a super star!
    2) my wife does have that balance of kindness and wisdom (vs26)

  5. 1- ‭Proverbs‬ ‭31‬:‭10-11
A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. ‬-NIV

I like how this passage speaks of her worth right off the bat. As well as the her husband lacks nothing by having her by his side. She is worth far more than riches and by having her a man would feel like the richest man in the world not needing much else.

2- my mom was a stay at home mom the majority of the time. She would keep the house in order and she would put work into the house. If something needed fixing she would put work into it.

  6. 1.31:10 A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.

I think we have seen and read the importance of having noble character as men. The value of having the characteristic is highly valued. It's easy to pray for a 'HOUSE' wife.

    2. My mother is someone to be praised. She definitely an encouragement in my life. She has battled through a lot in life, but kept her focus on Jesus. She is very intelligent, hard-working, and loves her family very much. She is respected and other women are always giving her godly praise and compliments for her wisdom, leadership and encouragement. I love her very much.

Love serving and growing with you all. Have a wonderful week. Be strong in the Lord.

  7. 1 Verse 25 stood out the most
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
When most people are fearful about the future and concerned with recent events and the events in their country, this woman is not. She is not shaken because her trust is not in circumstances, but in the Lord.

2 My wife is so adventurous: first she moved to Singapore all by herself (where we ended up meeting) and now she is moving to Kazakhstan with me on Friday.

She is also an excellent cook especially her Filipino menudo, Pork trotter with banana flowers, and Laing Na Gabi (taro leaves with Coconut milk and Shrimp paste).

I thank my wife for seeking the Lord and praying for our family.

    2) My wife is a hard worker at work and around the house. Sometimes I feel guilty and need to help her more. She even helped me clean the garage yesterday, she did most of it :). She is very attentive with the kids (schoolwork, meals,..). The kids like going to her with feelings issues, I'm not sure what those are :). I have to thank her for prayers and helping the family get on the right track with God. I think my heel marks are still embedded in the New Life parking lot.

If she hears of someone in need, she gets on the phone, facebook, nay source she can think of to find a way to meet that need. When we go shopping, she looks for things on clearance to store up. After all, someone will need it later, so why not get it at better price now.

  14. IV.She is ready for tough times.
    1) First she takes care of others. 31:21
    2) Then she takes care of herself. 31:22

    1. I have been with my wife for over 20 years. She and I began dating in High School and have been together through my multiple trips overseas and bonus combat deployments. I have heard couples say that they’ve had ‘rough times’ but this woman has truly experienced some rough times. The Marine Wife is a special species. A different kind of woman. Particularly, the ones that choose to stick around; those are a rare breed. There are plenty of military-wife stereotypes but this one is just a tad bit different. My wife has literally given her entire life to serving her God, her country and her family before herself. She understands the words Duty and Honor. She knows that she didn’t always come first and was OK with it---not all the time but she accepted it. That is a gift that not all women can take so, more often than not, they selfishly leave in pursuit of someone that will respond to their every need rather than choose to understand the meaning of sacrifice.

  15. 1) Proverbs 31:30 "Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised."
A verse showing us what is to be most valued in a woman. While the world values beauty more, we are to value good character and godliness more. This also means we should give credit where credit is due.

    2) My mom is a very loving and caring mother who is devoted to her 9 kids and husband. She loves God, and she does here best to instill a love of God into her kids. She is also very hospitable. She always takes the time to listen to hear her children's problems, and she pushes them to do God's will. She makes sacrifices of her time and energy to bring my brother and sister's to classes, doctor appointments, and meetings (which also included driving me to the orange line to go to school when I needed a ride to help me after my bike was stolen). She is a very good mom. I'm very fortunate and blessed to have godly parents.

Thinking about how much my mother did for us and how hard she has worked all her life to give us the great opportunities in life.
My wife is the greatest thing that ever happened to me, she may seem like she has OCD but she has taught me a lot with being responsible with my finances and she inspires me to be a better father, husband, brother, son. I believe she is a gorgeous woman but I realize now that looks don't say it all, its the actions and unconditional love they have within them that the lord blesses them with.

  26. Proverbs 31:20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.
As men, we can sometimes be callous to the needs of others. We know how to be selfless, but we rely too much on logic, whereas women are guided by intuition. This divine design makes it so they can sense and perceive the needs of others better than we sometimes can.

Proverbs 31:27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
I am blessed to be married to such a woman. When my wife occasionally changes the channel to any of the many "reality housewife shows" on TV, I am stunned by how some woman can spend so much of their time doing nothing to help others, their husbands, or themselves by enriching their relationship with God. My wife may treat herself to a massage or spa day, but this comes after weeks and months of tireless work and helping me keep our home in tip-top shape, and when she does, she often describes feeling guilty for doing so.

My wife possesses all these qualities and more. She is truly the Proverbs 31 woman. Her compassion inspires my own. In many respects, my own compassion has grown from seeing hers in practice. As busy as I often find myself with work and my studies, I am confident that my wife is as in tune with the affairs of our household, if not more so, as I am. She does not sit idly by as I work. She is a true partner in the upkeep of our home and finances.

  27. 1) Proverbs 30: 10b > She is worth far more then rubies.
The best thing to ever happen to me was being made righteous and having a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The next greatest blessing I have is having a wonderful relationship with my terrific wife.

    2) I will praise my wife for taking care of our home and family needs today. Our oven just went on the blink today and quit working right. She managed to finish preparing a delicious meal creatively using the stove. My son will soon need a car to go to school. Yesterday she inquired with me about the best model and make of cars that she could research on line for. She had a list of potential cars for us to look at that were within our price range when I got home from work. We looked at three cars this evening . Right now she is helping my daughter with an accounting class that she is taking in college. And tomorrow she is taking our son to Flight Academy Camp in Oshkosh WI ( a 3 hr. drive one way). She is quite a woman.

  28. 1.http://bible.com/111/pro.31.11.niv Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.
whether it be needing to make a decision on her own, I simply look and find everything in her.

    2. She has so many qualities but right now I can not stop praising for the amount of pain, uncomfortableNess of her body, her changes of hormones, hot flashes, all through the time of labor and what she is going to endure (growing pains). Can not possibly imagine me even taking the first trimester. She is my superhero.

  29. 1) New Living Translation
When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.
This reminds me of when Paul admonishes us to "speak the truth in love" or "restore such a one in the spirit of meekness". Often truth is used as a weapon rather then an aid. My wife is very wise, intelligent and caring, I can always count on her to share her honest thoughts.

    2) She is also a great cook and I like eating so it works out well. My wife is artistic, she draws, paints, takes pictures, is currently learning the drums. She is intelligent, articulate, creative. She is a self motivated hard worker, she sets her bar for herself. She is kind and tender. My wife is beautiful and King Lemuel would be jealous of my having her.

Verse 31:27 sounded right on point:
She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭31‬:‭27‬ ESV)
In humility a woman wife mother is a lead in a household in ways that the man cannot and has just dominion.

    2) My mother has been working hard for many years now and she hasn't stopped. She has achieved a lot of work success and has taught me that if you work hard in life good things will come your way.

  32. 1 – Proverbs 31:23 Her husband is well known at the city gates, where he sits with the other civic leaders. When I first read this I thought why is he talking about her husband? Then I remembered the saying “behind every great man there's a great woman.” Sure a man can be great on his own but I think with the support of a great woman the two can accomplish much more as a team.

2 – She’s has a good foundation in God. She is very caring and willing to go out of her way for other. I’m lucky to have Janette in my life, there are times I feel like I don’t deserve her. She is a good mother to Adrian, wife for me and she’s helped me become a better person.

  33. 1. Prov 31:23 says " Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land."
Such a godly woman advances her husband's interests, increases his influence, and, by attending to his domestic concerns, enables him to take his share in public matters, so that his name is in great repute in the community and church. She is indeed "a crown to her husband".

    2. I can honestly say that my Mom, Sara Fuentes, has ALL the attributes of this godly proverbs 31 woman, and I am not being biased! She literally fulfills all the character traits and lifestyle of this type of godly woman :)

  34. 1) Proverbs 31:10-11 “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.”
    ‭‭
She is trusted by her husband. Virtuous and Valuable. It is perfect how this passage starts off by establishing the value of that which it will expound on. The Wife of Noble Character. It is especially great because it builds a women up from the inside out, telling of how her character and worth are exalted well before all the other traits she possesses are mentioned. This definitely resonates with how I think of my wife. How her value in the Lord and Godly character shine bright before anything she does for myself or anyone else. Wonderful way to start.

    2) I am blessed to have as my wife someone who embodies many of the traits given in Prov. 31, and strives to grow everyday in so many others. Her heart is always relentlessly pursuing after Christ. She is truly a Women of God, and when she wakes up tomorrow morning (she is sleeping already), I will make sure to tell her what a treasure she is and why! :)

  35. 1. – Proverbs 31: 31 Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. Our Heavenly Father in heaven wants me to love sacrificially and honor at all times. I am to lay my life for her and love her. I know I am not perfect so I pray that I can fulfilled God’s words to love and honor my wife.

    2. – My wife is a teacher and she works hard. She has a hard time working inside the house but she does her best and I love her for that. I know that I am not perfect and I also do my best with the house maintenance. I thanked her for her prayers and willingness to dedicate her life and honor God.

    2. My fiancee is one of the most compassionate people I have ever met. The way her heart yearns to be of service to those around her and to her city fills my own heart with joy.
