Wed.7.8.15...Wisdom, Philosphy and UFOs...Prov.30:1-14

I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One" Prov.30:3

We have come to the second to the last chapter in Proverbs and we have come to a new author. It is no longer Solomon, but a man named Agur. His name means "Gatherer" and it may simply indicate that he was a gatherer of wise sayings. I'm glad you are now a gatherer of wise sayings. Proverbs is full of them and you have been picking and gathering your favorite ones all throughout this book. I've always enjoyed great quotes. Someone has aptly said that a good quote is a short statement based on long living. I have hundreds of them which I've gathered over a lifetime. It's a great way to quickly learn from the wisdom of others. But Agur confesses, "I have not learned wisdom..." Then how did he end up writing inspired scripture? I'm so glad you asked, for this is a huge philosophical issue which plays out with every single person you seek to talk with about the Lord. Let me explain.

I just said that the learning of wisdom and writing inspired Scripture is a huge philosophical issue. So let's talk about philosophy for a moment. The very word "philosophy" comes from two words "philo"meaning love and "sophy" meaning wisdom. Thus, the meaning of philosophy is the love of wisdom. (Sadly, it's often opposed to the love of God's wisdom.) One issue that philosophy focuses on is metaphysics, meaning things beyond our earthly physical realm (such as God). Another focus of philosophy is "epistemology" which is the study of how we can know things.

Don't let such big philosophical words from a skeptic intimidate you. Imagine you are on a camping trip far from the city. You are enjoying the stars, your campfire, and chatting with a couple M3 brothers, when a unsaved gentleman comes from his nearby tent, attracted by your friendly fire. As you gaze into the star filled sky, you bring up the subject of God. Then he reveals that he is an agnostic (one unsure if there is a God) and that he teaches philosophy at a university. Ugh! You are feeling like Agur, "I have not learned wisdom. I haven't studied philosophy. How can I hope to debate this learned man?" He brings up epistemology (How we can know something) and how can we even know there is a God. "How can you say you know for sure God exists? We know things by using our five senses. Have you ever gone up into heaven to meet this God? Of course not, so how can we know whether there is a God or not?"

Then you remember something we discussed in M3 and you tell him this great UFO story.
"Imagine right now we were debating whether intelligent space aliens existed and what color eyes they may have. One of us says blue, another green, another red, and another says he doesn't believe space aliens exist. Now we could speculate about such a metaphysical question all night long. But our ability to know (epistemology) is really just speculation. And all the great philosophers throughout the ages could also only speculate. But what if a space ship suddenly landed nearby and an alien walked out with one purple eye? We would no longer be left to our speculations; we would now have revelation. Mr. Professor, this is reason I believe there is a God, because of revelation. God revealed himself. He came down to man in the person of Jesus Christ, who lived a sinless life, died for our sins and then was raised to life and seen by hundreds of people up close and personal. Plus, He has changed my life and countless others throughout all of history." (Well said my M3 philosopher!:)

Philosophy can only offer us it's speculations. God's word and Christ gives us revelation. When philosophers rule out revelation, then although they claim to be wise, they become fools (Rom.1:22). Paul even taunts such proud wise men, "Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?" 1 Cor.120. Christ is the wisdom of God.The world through its wisdom will never come to know God. Learning philosophy or human wisdom in a classroom won't bring anyone to a true knowledge of the Holy One. Thus, we can now better understand Agur's words,  "I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One" Prov.30:3. His wisdom and knowledge of God was not gained through human learning, reason and speculation. But he most certainly did know the Holy One through revelation. His following questions mock and stump worldly philosophers, but even a young Christian could answer them- "Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Whose hands have gathered up the wind? Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son? Surely you know!"

And surely you know. His name is Jesus! So don't let worldly wise people snow you with their big epistemological and metaphysical words. It can't hide the fact that they don't know Christ, who is the wisdom and revelation of God. You are the one who is enlightened and wise. No matter what big words a person may use on you, always keep coming back to the wisdom of God, the revelation of His Son Jesus. "In Christ are "hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" Col.2:3. And every lost person you talk with must give up his speculations about God to come to know Him through the revelation of His Son. Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" John 14:6.

1.- It's crucial that we help people come to know God through the revelation of His Son. This is at the heart of our mission and the great commission- to make disciples, whom we are then to mature and multiply. So please watch another one of our greatestminimovies.com and share its name and a bit of what it was about. Then continue to look for opportunities to pass that site and our cards to other people. Way to go! Our website registers how many times our site is being viewed. People are going to it and I'll reveal the numbers at our M3 meeting this Sunday.

2.- Read through Prov.30:1-14 and share a verse you picked out and a bit of what you liked about it.

Agur declared he did have knowledge of the Holy One. In A.W. Tozer's classic book, "Knowledge of the Holy, he wrote these important words, What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us...Were we able to extract from any man a complete answer to the question, ”What comes into your mind when you think about God?” we might predict with certainty the spiritual future of that man...The heaviest obligation lying upon the Christian Church today is to purify and elevate her concept of God until it is once more worthy of Him - and of her. In all her prayers and labors this should have first place. We do the greatest service to the next generation of Christians by passing on to them undimmed and undiminished that noble concept of God which we received from our Hebrew and Christian fathers of generations past. This will prove of greater value to them than anything that art or science can devise.

Yesterday, I asked you all about opportunities you've had to give out Greatest-Minimovies cards to others. I really liked what Phil shared- "This Sunday was my first time ever in life that I went up to the altar and prayed over another guy. I must admit I was nervous, but I had a strong desire to do this and I prayed the whole way up there. It went pretty good and I felt good about it. Afterwards I gave him a "greatestminimovies" card and wrote my phone number on it and told him to check out some powerful videos and to feel free to call me anytime." Excellent Phil! I like the way you also put your name and phone number on it for that guy. You made yourself available to help him further if he wishes.

And by the way Phil, Happy BirthdayIf you are working nearby my home again, I'm coming over with lemonade :)

  2. 1. I watched a man fell into a whole. It is about the simple truth that we cannot save ourselves. We need a savior. I like that Jesus asks us, nothing is forced on us. It's a choice to be saved. Thank God we chose Him and nothing we could do on our own.

    2. Proverbs 30:8-9 (NIV) Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. 9 Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.

I pray that we seek the kingdom of God and not the temporary riches that are left behind.

  3. 1. Since we talked about Atheist today I watch, "I am an Atheist." Great points Dave. You said if a person is an atheist they would have to be all knowing and have complete knowledge to know that our God really doesn't exist. We are very limited in our capacity to know. I've heard that most people only use or tap into 10% of our mental capacity.

    2. I loved Prov. 30:2. I am the most ignorant man of men; I do not have a man's understanding.

Well, why should we listen or read this proverb, he's an ignorant man. What wisdom can we get from him...especially after we just read so much about foolishness in previous chapters of Proverbs. I personally believe this is such a great verse and the attitude of it is one I try to walk with. It's an expression of humility. There's nothing wrong with expressing that your ignorant to things if you're open to learning and being teachable. I think that's exactly what the author is doing here. It's a beauty thing as he is saying, I don't know it all, and he points us to God who does know it all. But as Dave mentioned and the author touched on, we can only know God and his wisdom through revelation.

  4. 1. I watched, "I am an Atheist." I'm amazed how many smart people do little research about something they are so confident, isn't true. For those of you that like science and would like to have a better understanding of creationism, check out The Institute for Creation Research, icr.org. I picked up one of their magazines at Moody while attending Founder's Week.
I agree with Dave to say that we need to always come to the cross. But I have found that some people don't what to hear about myths and legends. If I start on a healthy conversation that causes them to question what they believe, then they are willing to hear why I believe what I believe. I emphasize healthy conversation, not debate. Most people that lose a fight want a rematch.

    2. Proverbs 30: 8-9 Keep deception and lies from me, give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is my portion, that I not be full and deny You and say, "Who is the Lord?" Or that I not be in want and steal, and profane the name of my God.
No need to explain, these verses say it loud and clear.

  6. 1- I watched 700 years before he was born.
I love that the word of God gives us so many promises for our wellbeing. I love Gods promise that he would come down to save us. Not just that he made a promise but he is faithful and went through with his promise.

    2- Proverbs‬ ‭30‬:‭5-6
“Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

As followers of Christ we need to put our full trust in him, even at times when we feel that things aren't as they should. We need to be confident in his promises. Let us not be impatient and move on our own will, rather let us trust his word and promises as the verse says "every word of God is flawless"

  9. 1.Say No to Religion.
This was pretty short but gets to the point. God is not religion, but is there for you to make a relationship with. Read the Bible and obey it. Thats it. No needed rituals, just believe and worship and pray to him.
2.Proverbs 30:8 Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me,
Sometimes we want more money to live a little bit more lavishly. All we need is enough to survive and provide. We should be content with what we have.

  12. 1)What if I decide to do nothing --- this puts many thing into prescriptive by do nothing is like watching people suffer knowing that there is a God that can help heal all. If you don't go out to seek God why should he give you all his glory for no work in return.in economics we say there is no free lunch, meaning no matter what you do there is always a price to pay good or bad.

  14. 1. The mini movie I saw today was "kkk leader"
This is about Johnny Lee Clary. A man who grew in an abusive environment. In seeking acceptance, he joined the kkk. Here he became a very hateful, racist public spokesman for the klan. During the FBI investigation of the kkk, he was also put on the spot light. His only way to avoid prison was to step down. Now he was not only hated by the people he hurt but by the kkk. One day when considering suicide , he saw a bible. He opened it and read of the prodigal son and of the father's love. He went to a church. Upon entering he saw it was multi cultural. He stayed and opened his life to the pastor. The pastor told him that he could not ever hate him because of his past. He did surrender his life to the Lord. This story shows that the great love of God can change the worst type person.
    2. Prov. 30: 4. Have you ever mastered heavenly knowledge? Have any ever caught the wind in their hands? Or wrapped up water in a piece of cloth? Or fixed the boundaries of the earth?
This verse tells us of the greatness of God. He made the Universe and can take walks thru it. We can never imagine what is out there. He can control the power of the wind. He contains the waters in the clouds above and on the earth below . And with his mighty hands he formed the land and it's boundaries. The Lord is great ,powerful ,just, and loveing.

  19. 1) I watched “What if I choose to do nothing?” I liked it. The video explained that when a person decides to do nothing about their separation from God it's like playing Russian roulette with their eternal destiny. The video lets the words of the Bible speak for themselves in explaining the condemnation and judgment that people will face who do not have their sins taken away. The video then explains the eternal destiny of those who are disciples of Jesus using again the words of the Bible. Choosing to delay is the same as choosing to do nothing. Doing nothing has the risk of eternal consequences. The video urges to choose to become a Christian today.

    2) Proverbs 29:8a > Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
I was duped by the religion of the Catholic Church. I thought that I could become good enough. I thought that I was going in the right direction with my life. I thought that the Catholic religious leaders were a holy people who were close to God. I thought they were wise in knowing how to guide my soul to heaven. But God mercifully helped me to realize the falsehood of that evil system that I was taught and to see the lies that I believed in. I know what it means now to be so greatly deceived. And so Proverbs 29:8 is also my prayer not to accept or believe in the falsehoods and lies of religion or culture.

Very good short movie about why the pervasive lie of Jesus being simply a moral teacher of great qualities is false. It also gives many amazing testimonies of learned men that studied the scriptures to disprove them, and instead came to a life giving relationship with Christ. Very encouraging and pumped me up to hear them!

    2) the verse I liked is:

Proverbs 30:7-9 “Two things I ask of you, Lord; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God."

I truly join in prayer with Agur in asking our God to only give me my daily bread. I know the struggle of having much and forgetting my Lord in the flurry. It is not something I wish to repeat in my lifetime.

  25. 1) I watched "Falling Plates." It was a clever video about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I thought it was very creative.

    2) Proverbs 30:5-6 "Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar."

The verse reminds me a lot of the cults. Many of the cults add to God's words. For example, the JWs made different predictions about the time of Jesus's return which were all proven false. As the verse said, if we add to God's words, we will be proven to be a liar.

  26. 1.- I watched, the Uniqueness of Christianity :
The story and message of Christianity and Jesus our Savior, our "Savior Sinner"

    2.- Prov. 30:6
Do not add to His words, or He will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

God's words are true and proven, any deviation of his word is self serving and an abomination to him.

An example of people who lived in this self serving way were the Pharisees, the authoritative figures of the law and who new the prophecies of the coming of our Messiah and yet were blind to the fact that Jesus was the Messiah. Instead they persecuted and denied him because their authoritative way of life was threatened.

  27. 1. I watched "3-2-1" and I will write about the first number "3" to signify the "Trinity". Trinity simply means "tri-unity". God is not a simple unity; there is plurality in His unity. It is the belief that there are 3 eternally distinct persons in ONE Nature! The trinity is one of the great mysteries of the Christian Faith. It is known only by divine revelation, so the Trinity is not the subject of natural theology, but of revelation, through God's Word, the Bible.

While the word "Trinity" does not occur in Scripture, the concept is CLEARLY taught in the Bible. What is very important is the meaning that is poured into the word, is that meaning biblically correct? Two biblical truths are evident in scripture, the logical conclusion of which is the Trinity:
    1. There is only ONE True God
    2. There are 3 eternally distinct persons who are God (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit). All are ONE in ESSENCE and They are all co-equal in power, nature, and eternity. Now, when we talk about the persons, we are not talking about 3 Gods, we are talking about "individuality, personality, and identity" that is formed and completed on the basis of relationship within the Godhead.

    2. Prov 20:4 says "Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His son’s name? Surely you know!" -- The answer is Christ Jesus, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords! Woo Hoo :)

  28. Proverbs 30:8-9 "Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.
9 Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God." I recently confessed to you, brothers, my reaction at learning that my wife and I's first attempt at becoming parents was not successful. This verse reminds me that perhaps God has given me SO much, that I have become proud and arrogant. It is easy to praise God when things go your way...to point to Him when the work of your hands produce great fruit and claim none of the glory for yourself. It is right to do so. How difficult it is, however, for a proud and arrogant fool to praise God with the same vigor when his world falls apart around him, yet he is left unscathed. I did not die this Monday. No harm has come to my wife. Our health hasn't suffered, our quality of life has not diminished. Truly, we have been abundantly blessed. Like Agur, I pray that God give me neither too little or too much. I am grateful for what He has blessed me and my household with. I ask only for my daily bread...my daily allotment of blessing that gives me the strength to continue in service to the Lord. If this does not suffice, than I am being greedy and deserve nothing for my greed. May God forgive my pride and arrogance. May He keep me, always, humble and contrite, especially when my heart aches and sorrow comes to my doorstep.

  29. 1. I saw Smart in our own eyes and it was about how there is always more that we can learn, there is no such thing as knowing everything.

    2. Proverbs 30:1- I am weary, God, but I can prevail.
I was drawn to this verse for many reasons but namely that as followers there are always going to difficult, exhausting times for us to go through, I am going through one right now that has exhausted me beyond belief. Yet even in my exhaustion I know I will pull through because I know God is looking out for me.

  30. 1. "Falling plates" was the name of the video I watched. It's powerfully written and visually stunning to watch! I would encourage you if you don't know which one to recommend to someone to watch, recommend this one.

2.“Every promise of God proves true; he protects everyone who runs to him for help.” (‭Proverbs‬ ‭30‬:‭5 MSG)

  31. First thought that came to mind is being an intentional listener to people especially my wife.
These paste two weeks been working real late and in my area of work involves me listening to people's concerns, issues, questions and everyday life. When I get home, before I step in a take a two minute breather and let all my emotions and exhaustion to pass so I can be a great husband and a better servant for my wife. Where I get stuck at times when I'm good and ready to listen, she doesn't want to talk uggh but she surely picks the wrong times for me to do it either at 3a.m or when I'm busy and doing a task haha. The steps I need to follow is to always try to remember that were all wired different, try to munster up the energy that I do have and "just do it", and another is be intentional when listening, a few times I caught myself just saying " ah ha, mmm, and ok I see". Words to a wife that knows she is not being listened to. I want to accomplish that.

    Did it.

  32. 1. I watched falling plates. It was a awesome movie about how God came to the earth to save us and not Condemn us are sins. It explains we need him in order to be saved. Good movie!

2.There are those who are clean in their own eyes but are not washed of their filth. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭30‬:‭12‬ ESV) I thought about this verse because I feel theirs things in my life I need to change still. I'm working on them and continue to seek him for guidance.

  33. 1- so I watched " Adam and Eve were just myths " it specifys that people believe that it's just folklore but Jesus uses them through out the bible as examples. So believe in facts not wishful thinking.
    2- Proverbs 30:5-6
“Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
Well I have heard how this verse sounds through out the years and it's like God bless you for the consequences are not the greatest and that is why I watch what I say due to not having the proper consistency and knowledge to speak properly, yes the lord has helped me understand and change my ways and give a testimony but I do not have his wisdom or experience to fill my mouth with words that I feel are completely wrong. Blessed are those who can inspire me and others like me, for they are who we learn from.

  34. 1 I watched "I thought". It talks about how people's assumptions can often be wrong and that assumptions about God also fit in that category. It encourages people to look at verses in the Bible instead of assumptions.

2 verse 6 stands out. It made me think of the prosperity gospel churches; they seem to add the idea that once a person becomes a Christian they won't have any more problems. Actually Christians will have difficulties and sometimes more so because of being a Christian.
