Mon.7.6.15...A Wise Man Keeps Himself Under Control...Prov.29:1-14

Do you ever blow your stack? Lose your temper? Blow a fuse? It's true most people do. How can you overcome such? When I was a prodigal in high school, I got involved in a T.A. group- Transactional Analysis. It was based on a best selling pop psychology book, entitled, I'm OK, You're OK. Proud people would have titled it, I'm OK, You Stink. The Bible would remind us that None are OK. Anyway, the group leader advocated a practice called, "towel pounding" to release one's inner rage. (To be fair, it wasn't recommended in the book.) You were given a rolled up towel as you sat on your knees and told to imagine the face of the person you had anger toward and pound their face into the floor. Shout in rage if you wish. It was a wild time! The belief was that at the end of that towel pounding, you would feel better and wouldn't have all that pent up anger to vomit on the person the next time you were in conflict with him or her. You would be OK, even if they still weren't. The only problem with this practice was that studies later proved, like working a muscle, it only strengthened inner anger and explosions. Oops! What a foolish practice. If only they would have read our passage in Proverbs today, they would have known, "The fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control" 29:11.

As I've said before, I'm not typically a "yeller." But I certainly have raised my voice several decibels at times. (Okay, my wife might call it yelling, but I know there's a lot more in me to get to that level.) It should signal to the other person that you don't feel that you're being heard. So if your wife is raising her voice at the kids or you, it's probably because she doesn't feel she is being listened to. So lower your voice and say, "I'm sorry, I want to understand you better..." Watch how her volume will lower when she feels that you are trying to listen to her words and feelings. If you feel that she is not listening to you, please do not keep raising the volume. Your wife is not deaf and neither are the neighbors. "A wise man keeps himself under control." How do you do that when your adrenaline is pumping and you are jacked to go into the ring? As we've recommended before, take a time out. Go to your separate corners. Go to a different room. Take a walk. Give yourself at least a half hour for your blood pressure and heart rate to calm down. Self control over one's emotional displays is vital. A man without self control is like a broken dam, bringing great damage to those dwelling nearby (compare Prov.25:28 and 17:14). "Wise men turn away anger" Prov.29:8.

How can we calm our souls? First get away from the conflict situation. Then try breathing deeply and force yourself to think about something other than what just happened. As you start to cool off, try smiling, whistling, humming or singing. It's very soothing to the soul. Just try doing so and still remain angry. Betcha can't do it:) While others are still snared by their sinful anger, you will be overcoming it. "An evil man is snared by his own sin, but a righteous one can sing and be glad" 29:6. Singing is very therapeutic. It won't work until you calm down a bit. So first remove yourself from the conflict.

Speaking of singing, this is the only reference to such in Proverbs, though the Psalms repeatedly speak of singing. Psalms is aimed at relating to our great God, who is worthy of our songs of praise. Proverbs is aimed at relating to our fellow man. So let's close out today on an upbeat note. It's been a while since I asked you of a good Christian song that you've been enjoying lately. So...

1.- Please share the name of a song that you've been enjoying. It could be a new release or an old goldie. If you want to include its YouTube link, that would be all the better. The enemy can't stand a singing saint! It's a great way to resist the devil. "Resist the devil and he will flee from you" James 4:7.

2.- Read Prov.29:1-14 and write out the verse that you selected and some of your thoughts regarding it.

Welcome to M3 Michael Gonzalez! Michael lives in Iowa and is going to be marrying Dave Heidekrueger's daughter, Sarah. Congratulations Michael! I know Sarah and she is a wonderful, godly gal. I also think Michael and Dave are establishing a great way to regularly connect with each other around God's word. (What kind of guy may one day want to date and marry one of my daughters? It would sure give me peace of mind knowing he was a MANLY man. So maybe this should be a dating standard- You want to date my daughter? First join M3 :)

Wow, there was some tight competition this week as you see looking at the weekly team averages. Again these do not include the scores of  your team captains. They are focusing on helping you. Please cooperate with them as they may call you to remind you to put your points on the board. When you neglect to do this you are hurting your team as you can also see. Better yet, just get in the habit of going directly from commenting on the blog to the scoreboard. Also remember that the those of you were Unstoppable this past week have a U next to your name.

As you go to the scoreboard, remember that today's scores represent the entire weekend. You'll notice that the team I temporarily had is no more. The men of that team are now with other teams.

  1. Owl City- In Christ Alone, you-tube.... I liked listening to Heavy Metal Rock & Roll but after my accident, I barley listen to it. Proverbs29;1 A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed-without remedy..... I snapped this weekend at the kids, they don't listen, then they wonder why I get mad.

    2. Stay cool Flo. Don't get high blood pressure from yelling at the kids. When my boys were young , they would get rowdy too. I would sit them down to get their attention. I would let them know how I expected them to behave. They learned well. They're grown now and have their own children now.

11 Fools give full vent to their rage,

I think it is important to control anger since it usually only makes things worse. Also a person of wisdom will seek to understand the situation first and not just react

  9. 1. One song that comes to mind is "He lifted me", by Charles H. Gabriel. During my childhood I attended a Spanish church. It was when I first heard this song. The title in Spanish is "Me Levanto". There is a part that says :
He called me long before I heard.
Before my sinful heart was stirred
But when I took him at his word
    Forgiven, he lifted me.
    2. Prov. 29: 9. If a wise man has an argument with a fool, the fool only rages and laughs, and there is no quiet.
A wise man can never get anywhere arguing with a fool. A fool responds to wisdom with anger and laughing.

I was remarking on verse 29:10 today as we need to keep the armor of God equipped and put on. The target is on us men as we continue to stand together uphold righteousness, defend the Gospel, and advance the Kingdom. 18. Great tips on how to stay cool in conflict! I remember being hotheaded with my family many times when I was younger and foolish. Something I always regret. Thankfully the Lord pushed me higher than that through His grace in my life. Now in conflicts I tend to be just a little too wordy lol. I don't get upset or loud, just need to step back more when the disagreement is getting long and neither side is budging. Always a good reference verse that puts it plain as day:

Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭10‬:‭19‬ NLT)

    Work in progress. :)

    1) One song that I have always counted among my favorites is "After All (Holy)" by David Crowder Band ( one of my favorite worship bands).

    http://youtu.be/PXElUPuIDTw

I have just started playing it again after some time not hearing it, and it really just resonates in your heart as you hear why God transcends all things and is brighter than the stars....after all, He is Holy.

Bonus: The Remixed version by Capital Kings is a great listen and personal favorite for a faster approach to the original. :)

    http://youtu.be/V8c9t795nzw

    2) Many great treasures to draw from in this reading. I settled on:

Proverbs 29:13 "The poor and the oppressor have this in common: The Lord gives sight to the eyes of both."

It is a comforting thought----God is ALWAYS in control. When we are oppressed, I feel that a natural thought in our finite minds is "Who will save us?!?". We are in the middle of a struggle with someone, maybe they have caused us great pain?

We are told and believe in our hearts that God is bigger than this situation we are in, but we think "I don't even know if God can do anything with this Guy!".....yet, the same God that gives you sight, that gives you breath, that sustains your life; He is the same God that does that for the one who oppresses. So we need not fear anyone, for they too, are in the palm of the Father's hand.

  21. 1.- Please tell me that I am not the only one that thought “Man, do I put a Christian song?” “What if I’m the only one that doesn’t put a Chritstian song?” In either case, I can’t really tell you the name of a song that I’ve been enjoying if my life depended on it. I admit that I listen to KLOVE to and from work every day but while I’m on the road, I do mix it up. Any radion station, when listened-to long enough, just plays the same songs over and over.

2.- A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father.
As the father of a 22-year old, it is an odd place for me. He’s an adult but he’s not to me. He’s a kid but he’s not to the world. His brain is still the same size as it was when he was 8 but he doesn’t believe me. That’s why when I, as his father see him exercise or live-out on his own free will, a life lesson that I instilled in him, it definitely brings me joy.

Thanks for the words of encouragement this afternoon Dave. Let's take over the world--one man at a time!

    2) Proverbs 29:11 Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end.

    3) This reminds me of the story of David, Nabul & Abigail in 1 Samuel 25.
Nabul was a wealth herdsman but also a foolish man, and responded to David's men who approached him harshly and with rebuke. This enraged David when he got word of the incident and he gathered his men and was about to fight and destroy Nabal and all his men. Abigail, Nabal's wife heard what had happened and wisely made peace with David by her words and actions and spared her husband's life for the moment. When Nabal heard how Abigail made peace with David, Nabal in the middle of his rage and anger suddenly died. On learning this, David then took Abigail who was very intelligent, wise and beautiful as one of his own wives.

I take it as a father, head of family needs to have firm balance of judgement in all things instead of manipulating things. Thoughts, or correction?

    2) New Living Translation
A just king gives stability to his nation, but one who demands bribes destroys it.
While none of us are kings we do carry a position of leadership, honor and responsibility. When we our fathering, husband-ship, and or manhood reflects the beliefs of God we bring stability and trust to the relationships involved. But when we demand what is not ours to rightfully take (which isn't much) then we destroy trust by wounding the very soul of those involved. Let us be those who are more concerned with adding value then taking it.

  27. 1) "Remember Me" by Kutless.

    2) Proverbs 29:11 "Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end."

The proverb is obviously about exercising self-control regarding your anger. The wise man keeps himself calm during conflicts. In addition, people will be more likely to listen to a person if he controls himself too.

  29. 1. Audio Adrenaline - Never Gonna Be As Big As Jesus

    2. Prov 29:1 says "Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy." -- a person who has had a long experience of rebukes and warnings and does not change is said to be stiff necked. The hardening of the neck is a metaphor derived from obstinate draught animals who will not submit to the yoke (Deuteronomy 10:16; Jeremiah 2:20; Jeremiah 27:8). Christ calls His yoke easy, and encourages believers to bear it bravely (Matthew 11:29. ). The rebukes may arise from the Holy Spirit or your own conscience, from the teaching of the past, or from the counsel of godly friends.

When we do not repent after many rebukes, we will suddenly be destroyed, and without remedy!! Ugh!! Let us not learn the hard way!

  32. Proverbs 10:11

The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. I found this verse in comparison to proverbs 29:2 and thought we all can be righteous by starting with our tongue.

    1. I agree, Brother Guillermo. While wickedness begins in the mind, it is manifested in our words, and it is through our words that we can inflict great damage to ourselves and others. We need to make a conscious effort to guard our tongues against our own foolishness. It is one thing to recognize it in ourselves, but a completely different thing to reveal our foolishness to others through poorly chosen words.

  33. ***Broken Arrow*** My wife and I did not receive the news we were hoping to receive today. It has been a trying last few weeks for us that culminated in a most trying day. I am ashamed that in my anger and frustration I lashed out at God, much as I did when my father passed away and when my mother was diagnosed with cancer (which, by God's grace she has been in remission from for almost a year). I swore, I rebelled, and for a moment I turned my back on the Lord. I confess this to you brothers that you might pray for me as I work to overcome this tendency to falter in my faith when I am faced with trials beyond my comprehension. My wife was instrumental in helping me calm down and recognize the error in my way, but she too is concerned that this is seemingly my default mode when I find it difficult to embrace God's purpose and will. Clearly, my relationship with the Lord is not nearly as strong as I perceived it to be of late if this is how I react during difficult times. If any of you have had a similar crises of faith, I welcome your advice and wisdom on how to build a stronger relationship with God that isn't rocked every time I am confronted by trials and tribulations. Please join me in praying for my wife, for whom this trial was significantly more personal and who will soon be preparing for another attempt. Her unwavering faith has weathered the storm better than mine and I admire her courage and strength through this difficult time. For my part, I must do a better job of being the pillar of faith for my family and being a stronger head for my house. I apologize if I am unable to take your calls, given my busy schedule this summer, but I will make every effort to reply to your texts and emails. Brother Ed, thank you for your kind words today. I received your email but did not have the words to reply at the moment out of respect for my wife's privacy in this matter.

    1. "When Mercy Found Me" by Rhett Walker Band. I first heard this song on K-Love a couple of years back. At the time, it really resonated with me, as it spoke to the point on the road I found myself at, somewhere between acknowledging my brokenness and surrendering my life to Christ. You can find it here: https://youtu.be/zm5oirhXl7I

    2. Proverbs 29:11 "Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end." This verse fully describes the nature of my fall today. In my anger, I gave full vent to my rage. I pray for wisdom and grace to overcome this rage and submit myself to God's will.

  35. 1. Picking one song is truly difficult for me to do so I'll give two: one new and one older and both have a similar theme to them.
First one is Prodigal by Sidewalk Prophets

Second one is Fix My Eyes by For King and Country

    2. Proverbs 29:1- Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy. This verse serves as a reminder to myself regarding a somewhat stubborn nature that I possess. Regardless of the situation it can be hard for me sometimes to accept that I am in the wrong and unfortunately that means that I am setting myself up for destruction. I pray that God may bless me with the wisdom to overcome my stubbornness so that I may not meet that fate.

My apologies for not being here yesterday as I would have liked. Thank you for welcoming me into your lives and I look forwarded to growing alongside each of you.
