"However many years a man may live, let him enjoy them
all.
But let him remember the days of darkness, for they will be
many.
Everything to come is meaningless...youth and vigor are
meaningless."
Eccles.11:8,10.
Our
bodies age quicker than we want. Our strength fades. Consider these two world
records for bench pressing. In 2013, at age 37, Eric Spoto, set a new record
for bench pressing- 722 lbs. Wow, what strength! That same year, at age 91, Sy
Perlis set a new record for those 90+, bench pressing 187 lbs. Ugh! That
reminds us of what we would rather not remember- we lose so much strength as we
age. Yet Ecclesiastes stresses that it is important to remember that we are
decaying and to remember our Creator in the days of our youth. For many of us,
our youth is in the rear-view mirror. What awaits us? Read Eccles.11:7-12:8 now
for a very poetic description of old age awaiting us.
Old age
does not sound inviting, does it? I lived with my aged grandfather while I went
to Kellogg Community College before going off to Bible college in W.Va. He did
not see, hear or walk well in his late years. He was unsaved and more than once
declared, "There's not one good thing about growing old! Name me
one!" My dad tried to comfort him by answering, "Memories."
Grandpa lived to age 88. And my dad made it to 89. I'd like to think I could
make it to age 90. Ever tried to guess-timate how long you might live? Will you
make it to 90? What will you look like? Here's a great video of a man who was
born in 1919, showing his appearance morphing until he died at age 90. Ugh!
Why all
this talk about old age and death here and in Ecclesiastes? Solomon
has already reminded us- since "death is the destiny of every man; the
living should take this to heart" Eccles.7:2. So remember to honor the Lord before your life breaks down at the well of life. That's what 12:6 is
describing-
"Remember
him before the silver cord is severed, (the cord to the bucket)
or the
golden bowl is broken;
before
the pitcher is shattered at the spring (which the water would be put in)
or the
wheel broken at the well" (the wheel over which that the cord and bucket
were lowered into the well.)
Remember,
Solomon has repeatedly commended the enjoyment of food, family, friends, work,
rest, etc., as gracious gifts from God. Enjoy them in the midst of life that can
be down-right confusing, frustrating and fleeting (meaningless). In light of
our decaying and death, he is not advocating living for pleasure (hedonism),
but living for the Lord, the Giver of all these good things (see James 1:17).
And he calls us to remember that "for all these things, God will bring you
to judgment" 11:9.
With
the progress of revelation, the NT reminds us to not only enjoy God's gifts,
but to live to advance God's kingdom. A well said quote reminds us, "Only
one life, 'twill soon be past; only what's done for Christ will
last." Pastor Adrian Rogers told about visiting a dying, old Christian
man from his congregation. The man said to him, "I'm not afraid to die,
but I am ashamed to die." He had not lived to advance God's kingdom, to
reach or teach others, to mature and multiply others. He had lived for
himself. "A Christian wrapped up in himself makes a pretty small package.
I'm so glad you are wrapped up in Christ and his kingdom cause. You are
remembering what is vitally important.
"Remember
your Creator in the days of your youth" Eccles.12:1
"Remember
Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David" 2 Tim.2:8.
We want to know him and to make him known.
We want to know him and to make him known.
Remember
your epitaph and our GREAT commission- to Multiply MANLY Men.
1.- The
average lifespan of American males now is 78 years of age. So imagine
it's your 75th birthday. Let's say that each year until then you just recruited
one new man to M3. Do the math. How many men would you have recruited by
then?
That's
a lot of M3 men to come to your birthday party! But here is where it gets mind blowing.
Imagine that each one of the men you recruited also recruited only one man each
year. How many would be at your party? The math is mind bending. It doubles
every year- 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 254,
508, 1,016! And that's just each one reaching one for 10 years! Several of
you have reached 2 or more in the 8 months since we started M3. That's why I scratch my head when men don't join or drop out of M3. They are like a farmer not planting any seeds. So glad that is not you!
2.- Who
are the men you are now seeking to recruit to M3?
"Remember your Creator." You are remembering why you were left here by the Lord, to be fruitful and multiply- to make multiplying MANLY men.
3.- What's one verse from Eccles.11:7-12:8 that grabs your interest? Share it and and some of your thoughts about it.
What did Einstein and Solomon have in common? Find out Monday.
Thanks for putting all your points on the board, especially as I do the scoreboard tallying over the weekend.

3. Ecc.12.7. "and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it". We all are going to turn to dust but the important thing is when we die our spirit goes to God and he judges us, if we are in Christ so do our bodies, that is our new bodies.

3. Ecclesiastes 11:9 "You who are young, be happy while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment." How's that for a reminder of the free will God has blessed us with to choose our own path and carve our own trail. Sobering, really, if you think about it. I tell my students, quoting a popular phrase, "It is not what you do when others are watching, but what you do when no one is watching that defines your character." Our Father wants us to be happy, to enjoy our youth and the fruit of our work. What father wouldn't want this for his son, but the verse ends on a cautionary note: "...but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment. Judgment awaits us all. What will the verdict, the statement of truth, be for each of us? What have we done with the freedom from sin and death that Christ purchased for us on the cross? What have we yet to do? As my mother would tell me when I first started going out with friends and staying out later than usual, "Disfruta, mijo. Pero portate bien." ("Enjoy yourself, son, but behave.") Though my mother isn't around to remind me of this each time I head out the door, her words are engraved in my mind, but my Father in heaven has also engraved them on my heart, "Enjoy yourself, son...but live as I have called you to live."
Excellent reminders Osiris!

Growing old is not so bad. If you are vain, proud, egotistic, yes it devastating. If you're jealous, hold anger, easy to anger , you age quicker. Now you want to enjoy old age. Look around at all the beautiful things that God has given us to enjoy. The blessings he has let shower over us. In everything give God thanks. In the morning , for waking us. When we eat, for the food he gives us. On our birthdays, for the years he has blessed us with. Yes, I've had my hard times, but God had always helped me through. And yes , when old age comes, physically and mentally you change. There is no getting around that. But you keep a thankful, cheerful heart in the Lord. Like I said before ""while riding the roller coaster of life, hang on tight to Jesus.

Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, "I find no pleasure in them”--
I was looking at verse 12:1 and found it very memorable compared to
Deuteronomy 8:18
But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

ReplyDelete3 verse 5 stands out 5 when people are afraid of heights
and of dangers in the streets;
when the almond tree blossoms
and the grasshopper drags itself along
and desire no longer is stirred.
Then people go to their eternal home
and mourners go about the streets.
It makes me think that fearful people (afraid of heights) and people afraid of being in the community (streets) and when people drag themselves along in life and they no longer have any desires, then their end is near.
I was reading a Christian book that discouraged the traditional American concept of retirement. It noted that people with nothing to be busy at die off quicker than those occupied with meaningful tasks.
Hey Ed! I commend you for inviting your brother.
DeleteYes, I also have heard the benefit of keeping busy. We should live a long time :)
I have heard the same. I think retirement is a great idea so long as it is not the end of your meaningful activity. I think with the monetary resources and time retirement offers if you live long enough you could invest a great deal in the lives of others, and in activities that expand the territory of God in the lives around us.

Don't let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honor him in your youth before you grow old and say, "Life is not pleasant anymore."
There are ways that you can serve God in your youth that escape you in your old age, strength, mind and skill all start to diminish at some point or stop abruptly at death. The point is as we go about enjoying life, let serving God be a priority.

3) Ecclesiastes 12:1 Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them”—
My Dad passed away this past November. The last eight years for him were days of trouble in the sense that a partial stroke weakened his good eye, making him legally blind. That ended his hobbies of gardening and mailing in entries for various sweepstakes and contests. When that ended he spent most of his time in front of the TV which he barely could see. The inactivity deteriorated his physical condition to the point that he started having body aches and severe back pains. For a while he still seemed to enjoy the visits from family. But then he had many bad days when he was in no mood for any visitors. My Dad had been religious for much of his life, but had little interest for the Bible or talking about spiritual things. I wonder how his last years would have been different if he had known the Lord. I hope that my mind will be as sharp and clear as his seemed to be. I want to sense the Lord's presence and remain his servant until the very end.
1. In God's will I would hope to leave a legacy of Love of our Lord. In that, reaping and sowing are something I must work on and seek to pray more guidance upon.
ReplyDelete2. I am praying for two young men to join. Both are working on their faith, as both have had a rough time growing up around Christian family members that have soured their perspective on matters of faith. I have three other friends that are in small group with me now, that would be a great addition from their knowledge and their walk in service to God.
(Ecc 12:2-3 NABRE)
Before the sun is darkened
and the light and the moon and the stars
and the clouds return after the rain;
When the guardians of the house tremble,
and the strong men are bent;
When the women who grind are idle because they are few,
and those who look through the windows grow blind;
Reminds me of the Moody Blues Song, "Late":
"Breathe deep the gathering gloom,
Watch lights fade from every room.
Bedsitter people look back and lament,
Another day's useless energy spent.
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one,
Lonely man cries for love and has none.
New mother picks up and suckles her son,
Senior citizens wish they were young.
Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colours from our sight.
Red is grey and yellow white.
But we decide which is right.
And which is an illusion? "
To the Verse- I pick up the sense of wanting, the remembering. The need to tell the youth that there is a fleeting of life for which we cannot control. But our vanity- to which he concludes again is ours. Our vanity. That is separate from our nature to do these things for God and do all that he has asked. He stands to be the benefactor of our labour, strife and perspiration - We under the sun do not see it. Unless we stand under a different Son.
