Today we
want to turn an important corner. Up until now we have been laying a rock solid
foundation on God’s word (G), prayer (A) and righting wrongs (R). (The beginning of February we will introduce the letter E.) You men have become
unstoppable in these key areas and it shows everyday on our GREAT scoreboard.
New men coming in will see that you have set the example for them to follow.
You are pace-setters. Today we will begin a series on “Being a Godly M.E.N.T.O.R.” This week we
will be focusing on just the first and most crucial letter- M. There’s so much
to this letter, so let’s get to it.
M=
Modeling. Paul said, that he and his ministry team (coaches) carefully lived “in
order to make ourselves a model for
you to follow” 2 Th.3:9. If we are going to have any significant impact on protégés
and others, we need to be good models. Remember, more is caught than taught. In
other words, we learn more by a person’s example than their exhortations. As
one wag put it, “Your walk talks and your talk talks, but your walk talks
louder than your talk talks.” Another has said, “What you do speaks so loudly,
I can’t hear what you’re saying.” Can you relate to the following? It’s definitely what protégés want and need-
I'd rather see a sermon than
hear one any day;
I'd rather one should walk with me than merely tell the way.
The eye's a better pupil and more willing than the ear,
Fine counsel is confusing, but example's always clear;
And the best of all preachers are the men who live their creeds,
For to see good put in action is what everybody needs.
I soon can learn to do it if you'll let me see it done;
I can watch your hands in action, but your tongue too fast may run.
And the lecture you deliver may be very wise and true,
But I'd rather get my lessons by observing what you do;
For I might misunderstand you and the high advice you give,
But there's no misunderstanding how you act and how you live. Edgar A. Guest

Children
certainly learn so much by the example of others. It’s also true for adults as
well. Jesus repeatedly said, “Follow me.” Peter wrote that Christ left “you an
example, that you should follow in his steps.” 1Pet.2:21. Paul said, “Follow my
example, as I follow the example of Christ.” 1 Cor.11:1. Wow! What an example
Paul was to follow! Leaders know the way, go the way and and show the way. "Follow me!"
Let’s
explore the way that Paul mentored new believers. He said to the Thessalonians,
“You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of
us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with
the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so
you became a model to all the believers…” 1 Th.1:5-7. Isn’t that a great
way of multiplying MANLY men? As proteges imitate MANLY men, they become models
of MANLY men for others to follow. And so the multiplying process continues.
That’s why it’s imperative that we coaches set the example. We reproduce after
our kind. So thanks for daily being diligent to be G.R.E.A.T. for God. The protégés
will see your progress on the GREAT scoreboard and have something great to
imitate. Thus, to use Paul’s words of encouragement- “Be diligent in these
matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.”
1 Tim.4:15.
1.-Read
1 Thessalonians 2:1-20 and share something that impresses you about the method/model
of Paul in making godly imitators of Christ.
2.-Write
out on your MP3 card this powerful verse portion- "You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord" 1 Th.1:5b-6a. What an important verse to keep in mind when mentoring children or adults. Do the Did it, when you did it.

I love the part where paul says that he does it with pure motives and not to try to trick people. And when they preach the gospel they didn't try to be people pleasers. But God pleasers as far as being a model he also states that while he was there he didn't want to be a burden to them so I believe paul was a tent maker he probably helped in whatever you can as far as working.

DeleteAlright George! And you lead the pack today. Welcome aboard!
ReplyDeleteColossians 4:5-6 NIV
DeleteBe wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. this was my scripture calendar reading for the day
1) 4 On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts.
ReplyDelete8 so we cared for you.Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.
I like that Paul did not dilute the gospel in attempt to gain favor from the people. He knew that God would hold him accountable. I also liked that they showed God's love by sharing their lives.
I pray that we continue share what God has given us, in order to advance his kingdom. May we share our gifts, phileo, wisdom, homes, time, hearts, mistakes, food and anything else i am missing.

Good job reaching out Mike and Daniel!
Welcome George and Antonio. I pray that you will be blessed in our daily commune of the word of God.
Excellent Sam! We R=Respect you! You get to see my R tomorrow.
Delete1 )1 Thessalonians 2:6 We were not looking for praise from people, not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles of Christ we could have asserted our authority. 7 Instead, we were like young children[a] among you. Just as a nursing mother cares for her children,
ReplyDeleteI thought these are some great verses. Paul didn't want praise he just continued on his mission doing what GOD told him to do. Paul was humble and gave GOD the glory. I believe to be a good model we need to exalt GOD for its not by our strength but the strength GOD gives us, so that we can be a good model. I know to be a good model there will be lots of criticism, but Matthew 6:33
says "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." So I will need to seek GOD for more help to be a great example.

4) A O Lord, give us Hungry men in Jesus name amen!
Alright Vince. 2:7 is especially worthy of our close attention :) Looking forward to Saturday with you and many others.
Delete1.I love the way that Paul followed our Lord Jesus and how he completely gave up himself. He put God's priorities( #1) in place as he longed for the return of Jesus. He fought through persecution and never was a burden to anyone as he mentored others to follow the Lord.
ReplyDeleteHe encouraged, comforted, and urged others constantly to live lives worthy of God; as he was led by the Holy Spirit within to build up others through his example to follow Jesus. " For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ when he comes? Is it not you? Indeed, you are our glory and joy." 1 Th 2:19-20 OUR LEGACY DESIRE!
This is what we are all about-- JOY--as we give ourselves up to follow JESUS, then lead OTHERS through the Holy Spirit to mentor,
encourage and urge others to live lives worthy of God, and then YOU.
We must lay no burden upon others and serve others; become great leaders as we 1st Serve Our Great God. It is our mission to multiply through such leadership as Paul and Love Christ and others as lead by the example set by Jesus.

Delete1. There's a few things Paul highlights here. a) He talks to the motives in which they shared the Gospel. It wasn't to people please or for money, it was because God had entrusted them and empowered them to do such. b) Paul talks about the way in which they shared the Gospel and their lives with those in Thessalonica. They were gentle, affectionate, and self-less. c) They lived by example, to the point of today's whole blog (which is a great lesson). They lived out what they preached, having God and the Thessalonians as their witnesses. As leaders, we can't expect people to go where we don't go. So setting the pace, being the example, walking the walk, are all important for us in being active in pursuing and mentoring other men, but even moreso, in having our lives point to Him. That's the ultimate goal. Less of us and more of Him!

Welcome Tony and George, glad to have you guys on board!
Very good Eddie! You are a good example!
DeleteWhat I received from 1 Thessalonians 2 was Paul was walking the walk and talking the talk. He lived for God and was a great example for us and others as well a shining light for God. If we can model Paul's ways we will be shining light for God as well. If we only could strive to be like Paul we would be respected by others as a Godly man.

A
You're right Mike- Paul sure walked the walk. Thanks for your walk as well.
DeleteBrother Tony, welcome to the ministry :-)
ReplyDeleteThere were two things that were very engaging for today
ReplyDeleteFirst to imitate doesn't just come the knowledge and prosperous things but also we imitate by enduring in sufferings. Paul says "you suffered from your own people the same things those churches suffered from the Jews."
Second; in all that we do we imitate the one who sent the leaders that are before us, as they are imitators of Christ through their leaders. It is the mentors like Paul that duplicated in revealing God's identity. Who poured out the same things that were taught to them. Then it is Christ that teaches us to have the brotherly love for one another; to have burden for the people in bondage and have their spiritual "stomachs" full of the world that they cannot hunger. Thus when Christ teaches us, we also can be the funnel for the people who can be imitators needing direction.

Delete1.- 1 Thess 2:8 says, " we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us."
ReplyDeleteI really like that Paul says that not only did he and his fellow missionaries want to preach the gospel to the Thessalonians but also they were willing to give of themselves to show they were committed to these believers and were willing to stand next to them everyday. What a great example that is set for us as mentors to follow... not only to teach and instruct our proteges but also be willing to give of ourselves.

Excellent Roger!
Delete1) One of the things in I Thessalonians 2:1-20 that impressed me about the method/model of Paul in making godly imitators of Christ was that Paul, right from the beginning, expressed what his motive was. “On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel.” Paul wanted to please God and was approved by God in his walk (living out the gospel himself) and in his talk (explaining to others how to live out the gospel). Paul exposed a few wrong motives one can have in wanting to mentor other men. One wrong motive was wanting to be well liked and well regarded by their proteges through using flattery. Another wrong motive was wearing a mask to cover greed, in order to somehow profit through the proteges. May our motive as M3 coaches to mentor other men never be to receive recognition, reward or a pin before our other brothers in M3 but to please God and to be good examples like Paul.

There's a saying that "people don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." In the passage I read it is clear to me that Paul was a clear example of someone who had great knowledge but also great care. I admire the fact that his authority didn't give way to arrogance but rather humility, innocence, and excitement in being able to share with others. Thes. 2:7
ReplyDeleteI noticed his ability to be balanced in his approach, nurturing like a mother yet encouraging and pushing them to be more as would a father. Lastly I admire his work ethic. Paul carried out his mission in addition to his making a living, rather than as a substitution, and expecting others to provide something in exchange for what he was "giving."

Delete1. There are so many things in this passage. I think that am most impressed with the overall content of this passage. Paul seems to write with concern literally like a Father that wants to encourage a child (1 Thess 2:11-12). Although Paul writes this epistle to a congregation it almost seems as if he's communicating with individuals. This speaks of Paul's genuine passion for this church. Lord, may I have this kind of fervor and compassion for those you put in my path as well!

I love how explains first that he didn't come for glorification, nor receive some type of reward or achievements. I am deeply impressed with Paul's confidence. he states that he was devout, just and blameless. this is impressive to me because he is inviting others to criticize and cross examine him by his public announcement of his personal character. but what he knew was that when his was scrutinized by others all they would find was support for his position. i desire to have this confidence due to great character not compelling deceit. ReplyDeleteWelcome Tony! Way to be unstoppable while facing internet access challenges!
ReplyDelete1. "We are not trying to please people, but God" and "Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well."
ReplyDeleteWhat strikes me about this is that Paul has modeled a balance of loving God and loving people, both by sharing the gospel and also themselves, but doing so in a way that isn't people-pleasing, but seeking to please God.
2. Did it
A. With all our hearts we request hungry men, Lord!
I agree Daniel. Paul's model was to walk in fellowship with God and man, which is so important. It reminds me of 1 John 2 where it states, "Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them." Paul really modeled this for all the other believers! May we do the same as well.
Delete1. I selected verses 3 & 4 that states. "For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you. On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts." -- The apostle Paul states that the missionaries were not characterized by impure motives, a faulty error filled message, nor deceitful slick methods. On the contrary, they were preaching the gospel as men approved by God, never attempting to please men as their audience, but with the full intention to Please God. We too, as men with the Holy Spirit living within us, have been approved to preach the gospel, in confidence and boldness. Thus, let's march on!
