Yesterday, we began looking at the
phrase in the Lord’s prayer, “Lead us not into temptation.” But wait! “God
cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone” Ja.1:13. Instead he guides
us in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake (Ps.23:3). So how can Jesus
have us pray, “Lead us not into temptation?” We learned that it was an old way
of saying, “Lead us away from temptation.” It is acknowledging that I am prone
to wander. I need the good shepherd to lead me. He does so very well when we
read and heed his word. Those who don’t are doomed. Yesterday we looked at 10
points of protection against temptation. Today, we will continue on and look at
points 11-20.
11.-Remember, you can never
weaken your old sin loving nature. Fasting doesn’t bother it at all. So don’t
get discouraged if when fasting the devil still tempts you. That’s when the
devil tempted Jesus the most. Use God’s word to battle temptation. Jesus quoted
scripture each time he was tempted (Mt.4:1-11). Aren’t you glad you are
meditating on a new verse each day? You’re building up a great arsenal against sin
and Satan.
12.-Know when you are most
vulnerable-HALT. We are often most
vulnerable to temptation when we are Hungry,
Angry, Lonely or Tired. When I
am low on sleep, I get attacked much more in my thought life. Thus, I’ve found
that one of the most spiritual things I can do is take a nap if possible or go
to bed earlier. Our spiritual beings are intricately woven together with our physical beings.
13.-If something indecent comes
on the TV, be quick to change channels. If you are a guest, then close your
eyes or leave the room. “Turn from it” Prov.4:15; 2 Tim.2:19; 1 Pet.3:11. Have
you ever walked out of a movie theater because the movie was trash? Good for
you!
14.-Guard your eyes. Jesus said, “Whoever looks at a woman to lust
for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matt. 5:28). To
look at a woman who is beautiful is not sinful, it’s normal. Even the writers
of the Bible noted certain women were "very beautiful" (Gen.12:14; 24:16;2 Sam.11:2). But when the look becomes a
long look, trouble is brewing. The lustful look may soon follow. So admit the
obvious and then move on. Change your view. “Do not lust in your heart after
her beauty.” Prov.6:25. Job said, "I made a
covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.” Your body, including your eyes,
belongs to the Lord. So we are to honor the Lord with our bodies (1
Cor.6:9-20). I’ve made it a game of sorts to turn my head away from lewd
billboards, especially when my wife is in the car. I've earned her trust and I never want to lose it, grieve her or my Savior.
15.-Hate what you love. Our
sinful nature loves sinful, evil things. Yet the Bible tells us, “Hate what is
evil, cling to what is good” Rom.12:9. We are to be controlled by our godly decisions,
not our ungodly desires. Thus, I choose to hate what I originally may be drawn
to. Declare what God and your new nature think of that which is seeking to deceive
and destroy you. “I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech”
Prov.8:13. Say such things out loud. "I hate that!" What is expressed is impressed.
16.-Recognize that what we are
first drawn to is often the deceptive and deadly thing. “Each one is tempted,
when by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then when desire
has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full grown, gives
birth to death” James 1:14-15. Temptation has the seductive lure of a prostitute.
Flee it. I also must accept full responsibility for my actions. It is my own
evil desires that desire temptation. I can’t blame it on my friends, circumstances or my
spouse. “If you were just a better spouse, this never would have happened.” Liar!
17.-Use hand signs as powerful
reminders. Put your hand up as a blinder to guard your eyes when you start to see something
or someone you shouldn’t look at. Touch your wedding ring if you’re married. Pretend you're stabbing it to death (Col.3:5).This may sound silly, but I've often found that introducing a bit of comic relief is quite relieving.
18.-Pray for the person who is knowingly
or unknowingly tempting you. “Lord, I pray that you would clothe her in
holiness. She is someone’s daughter or mother." And pray for yourself, your
spouse or your M3 teammates that they will be led away from temptation.
19.-Thank God for the good
things you already have. Temptation works by making you think how good it would
be to have what you don’t have. So let the temptation prompt you to count your blessings.
It’s well near impossible to tempt a rejoicing, praying, thankful Christian. “Rejoice
always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s
will for you in Christ Jesus” 1 Th.5:16-18.
20. Pray continually (1Th.5:17). As we have seen, prayer is a powerful weapon against temptation. “Watch and pray
so that you will not fall into temptation” Mt.26:41. So pray continually. This
doesn’t mean you are expected to be praying every minute of the day. Often you
need to be concentrating at work for example on things other than prayer. It
means we shouldn’t take a vacation from prayer. It means we should be in
frequent communication with God. Don’t wait until your formal prayer time to
talk to the Lord. We need to turn our temptations into conversations with the
Lord. Seek to cultivate a habit of touching base with God throughout the day.
May our MP3s on our 3x5 cards prompt us to do so all the more. God’s word helps
us to find words to respond to him. It’s also been said, “This book will keep
you from sin, or sin will keep you from this book.” Let’s choose the former.
1.-Once again, there are plenty of passages that have been quoted or referenced. Pick one that especially grabs you, and share your thoughts on it.
2.-Write a favorite portion of the verse you picked on your 3x5 MP3. Then do the Did it.
3. R? (Did you see Sam's from late last night?)
Hey Dave, you said under point 11 that fasting doesn't weaken the flesh at all. But I thought that was one of the reasons people fasted.
I'm sure it is a reason many people set out on a fast. I just know from Scripture and experience that fasting doesn't accomplish that. The confusion comes about because certain versions of the Bible use the same word "flesh" to refer to our bodies (flesh and blood) and to our sinful nature. So some people try to starve the flesh. They may weaken their flesh (body), but not their flesh (sinful nature). The Bible's directives for dealing with the flesh, our old twisted desires, is what we have been enumerating yesterday and today. I don't recall a verse related to fasting that was associated with dealing effectively with temptation. Since we are on the topic of fasting, the emphasis of the New Testament is not on doing without food; it is doing. If you are going to subtract food, please add prayer. If you want to greatly increase your time in prayer and don't think you could fast for very long, consider this when contemplating what to do for a week of fasting. Use your body's natural desire for food to prod you to pray." I will not eat a meal until I pray for 15 minutes or more." Just going without food doesn't make you more spiritual. It may make you more irritable and weak. So if you are going to decrease your food intake, please increase your godly intake of prayer and the word. Just a thought.

1. Its early at right now and most everyone at home is asleep so I'm doing most of my laughing in my head. Item 17 references Colossians 3:5 "Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature..." The idea of miming a stabbing has struck me as being absolutely hilarious! I picture myself at the end of the day looking like Julius Caesar; full of imaginary holes! I'll try it today...will report on its efficacy tomorrow!
ReplyDelete2. Colossians 3:5 DID IT!
LOL! I was imagining the temptation as an external thing a person may be lured to. But you're right. "We have met the enemy and it is us!"
Delete1.- I had never thought about #19 mentioned in the list above.
ReplyDeleteTo use thanksgiving for things we already have as a weapon against temptation. I can really see in my own life how having a content and thankful heart will help me keep my mind focused on God. For sure I will put this into practice today, when I am being tempted I will pray to God and thank Him for many undeserved blessings in my life and remind myself that true joy can only come from Him.
I Thess 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in ALL circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
2.- Did it
Excellent Roger! When I am full of thanks, I'm not hungry for sin.
DeleteI hate the things I used to love and love the things I used to hate. "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil;cling to what is good." Rom.12:9
ReplyDeleteTo hate means to have a passionate dislike towards something. The contrast used is to cling, hold on tightly to, remain closely to someone or something. I have myself being more and more repulsed towards the things I used to do in my past. Things which I thought were good, at least what the world told me was good. I get this image in my head of a magnet. The right bond creates a magnetic pull, an attraction. My desire and pray is that all us men would continue to grow in our attraction to the things of Jesus. May we be clingy with Jesus. Usually people can get impatient or get bothered by clingy people, but Jesus wants us to be clingy with Him. So let us glue ourselves to what is good and tear ourselves away from what is evil.
2. Rom. 12:9 did it.
Love your words- I hate the things I used to love and love the things I used to hate. We must hold tightly to the Lord for we all run the danger of drifting. Thank you!
DeleteGuard your eyes. Jesus said, “Whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matt. 5:28).
ReplyDelete#14 Really caught my eye. I notice that as I grow in Christ so also my marriage has grown better. GOD calls us his bride. GOD is faithful to his bride. I feel I should be faithful to my bride. I feel instead of using my eyes to sin I should them to grow in Christ. By reading the word and reading the M3 blog. Turning away is great too. I also say to myself you are a new creation. It silly but it works. I believe people laugh at JESUS, but he continue on his mission to the cross. I feel no matter how silly it is or who laughs at me I need to complete my mission. What also got me is how quickly and simple we fail in that commandment. I mean you commit adultery just by a look ,Wow that is quick. That why I feel we should go to the cross and ask for help and forgiveness. It amazing that the lord prayer mention forgiveness first then temptation.
GOD BLESS
Ah but if it works to overcome temptation then it is not silly but smart! You're a wise man Vince. And it is wise to remind ourselces of our new identity in Christ."I am a new creation, no more in condemnation, here in the grace of God I stand."
Delete1) Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
ReplyDeleteWe can be our own worst enemy. Since I started my walk with Christ, I have chosen to watch different channels like UP and Hallmark. I chose to listen to Moody 90.1 and Klove 94.3 and a couple others. We have watch out for the enemy, because we know he is coming. We must pray continually, so we do not stumble.
I also liked that we can pray with gratitude when we are weak (Excellent Dave!). “You may think the grass is greener on the other side, but if you take the time to water your own grass it would be just as green.” –Unknown
Did it
Very good Sam! That would be a worthy addition to our list is renewing our minds with good Christian stations.
DeleteThe grass may look greener on the other side. But it's crab grass! And you're right, we can water our own lawn! Great point!
James 1:14-15 " But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desires. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death."
ReplyDelete1. Enticement to do evil--Satan successfully tempted Adam, Cain, Abraham, and David with Bathsheba; but he was less successful with Job and Jesus who was tested in every way, just like we are, and he remained sinless. James explained that God does not tempt with evil, as Satan tempts for the purpose of destroying a person through sin, which leads to Spiritual death and HELL.
God may allow testing for the purpose of proving and enhancing faith, which ultimately honors him. This was evident with Job, as God will bless those who defeat temptation. We are all tempted, but God has given the gift of grace and also we have been blessed with the Holy Spirit which allows us to know God's Will and his Righteousness through his Word as well as through our relationship and daily communication with him. Sin is of our own free will --but also following Jesus is of our own free will--we have all chosen to follow Jesus and lead others. It is so easy to slip as we are down or tired, or allow ourselves to be influenced by alcohol or drugs; which then brings us down more and more and we give in to the evil one. So prayer of thanks to the Lord for everything, being aware of what makes us stray and thinking of our Lord always will help us overcome temptation. I sure don't want my old life back--and I want to be an influencer to many who struggle now and need the Lord--so I must lead by example. Dedication to following Jesus, reading his word daily, and staying in constant communication with God; but most of all living by his word. Thank you Lord.
Very good points that are essential for victory Jack! Looking forward to Sunday at your home. It's going to great!

ReplyDeleteDaniel Contreras' has asked me to inform all of you that his Father-in law's wake will be held at
Modell Funeral Home at 5725 S. Pulaski
on Thursday from 3-9pm
Hope we all can make our appearance and show our support as M3 for his wife, Martha, and all their family
Lets pray for comfort and healing for the family
1. James 1:14-15 "but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death."
ReplyDeleteThe oldest game in the history of mankind, the blame game. (Adam to God) It wasn't my fault, it was that woman you gave me. (Eve to God) It wasn't my fault, it was the serpent who deceived me (Gen 3:12-13). And so it goes even to this day, my dog ate my homework, lol. We need to own up to man up! #16 "It is my own evil desires that desire temptation. I can’t blame it on my friends, circumstances or my spouse. “If you were just a better spouse, this never would have happened.” Liar!" I've heard that the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. My problem is sin (Romans 3:23 "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
I also like the H.A.L.T. acronym, I believe it's from Chuck Swindoll. When I first heard it, I wrote it down on a post-it note and placed it on my keyboard as a reminder.
2. Did it :-)
Excellent Robert! Ah yes, the Blame Game, the game where everybody knows how to play without ever being taught the rules:)
DeleteI wrote down Psalms 23:3. He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name's sake. I have read Psalms 23 several times in my life time. I like it because it always reminds me that I am never alone, God is always with me. If we keep that in mind you will strive to not sin. I never heard a child disrespecting their parents while I was present. It's that fear of the old saying " I brought into this world and I can take out of this world" that kept most children in line when I was younger. If we let God guide us we will be at peace. Not to say that there won't be some days that we are not at peace because it is the nature of the beast/ flesh for us to get angry at people at things or our situation. With tha said remember God during those times/ trails and it will be a little easier to coop with.
ReplyDeleteDid it.
It appears that when I posted my assignment last Wednesday my response was not recorded. I stated that I tried to get a 100% on the test but could not. I was never a good test taker throughout my life . I did print the test/ answers so I can read them from time to time.
The MP3 group has helped me in committing to the Bible more and grow closer to God.
It's also encouraging to see others thoughts on any given subject.
Plus it's a pleasure serving with all the MP3. Knowing you guys are there is a great help in my life also I hope to be helpful to others.
Brother Mike, you reminded me of an episode of the Cosby show, when he sits his son down to give him advice and the son's response was disrespectful, Mr. Huxtable told him, "son I brought you into this world, and I'll take you out." Lol :-D
DeleteI am so glad you are with us Mike. We need you and there will be many men that will trace their spiritual mentoring to you.
DeleteNumber 15 is what captured my attention. "Hate what is evil cling to what is good." I am inspired by hating what is evil inside of me and what is natural in me. The ungodly desires I would have naturally loved to do if God had not intervened in my life. So I too choose to hate what I am drawn to in action and in thought: and give these things over to my new nature. It reminds me of Paul earlier in the book of Romans 7:16 "Now if I do what I do want, I agree with the law that is good." Basically only God enables to do what is truly righteous in his sight, and change "the things I do not want to do" to "the things that I will want to do."
ReplyDeleteDid it
Amen, Brother :-)
DeleteKeep fighting and prevailing in those inner battles Gary, so that you can fight strong and hard in those outer battles of advancing the kingdom of God.
DeleteColossians 3:5 “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. “
ReplyDeleteBefore my new birth, these were the things that dominated my life, even though I never went to bars, or partied much or slept around with women. Praise God that because He has given me a new nature I have the ability through Christ and His spiritual resources to keep putting to death the sinful desires of my old sinful nature which will finally die once and for all with this old body.
Did It - Wrote out Colossians 3:5 will MP3 it tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteCol 3:5 is a powerful truth indeed. It's not about which dog I feed the most, but which dog I kill!
Delete1. I actually wrote one of your points above: "Know when you are most vulnerable-HALT. We are often most vulnerable to temptation when we are Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired. When I am low on sleep, I get attacked much more in my thought life. Thus, I’ve found that one of the most spiritual things I can do is take a nap if possible or go to bed earlier. Our spiritual beings are intricately woven together with our physical beings." -- I can definitely relate with this point, as I do notice that I am tempted most when I am Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired. On a funnier note, I went to bed tonight at 10 pm (for me, that is extremely early) and woke up at 1:45 am to finish my blog post, LOL.... don't worry, I will not be making that a habit. My goal is to finish my blog posts by 11:30 pm or earlier everyday now :) This will help my mind and thoughts flee from temptation :)
ReplyDelete2. did it - I actually wrote your point above on my card, as a reminder when I am tempted the most
I will keep you in prayer Israel.
DeleteVery good Israel!
DeleteSorry for the very late post (too long of a day/night at work)
ReplyDeleteIntresting point Dave, "HALT", TOO OFTEN MY WEAKNESSES WERE AND ARE IS WHEN I'm hungry for something or craving something my flesh can't have, angry, lonely, tired. What has helped me at times was yes closing my eyes and whispering or saying out loud in my head you are HOLY HOLY HOLY, or saying to myself that that person is God's child, by God's grace we will walk blameless before the Lord, for we are righteous.
I will make Proverbs 4:15 as my MP3.
Thanks Dave for new scriptures being learned and meditated.
Alright Ismael:)
