Mon.1.5.15...Lead us not into Temptation

The Lord’s prayer has been helping to shape our prayer life in a more full and balanced way. It’s good to start out with God’s Praise (Our Father in heaven, holy is your name) and then pray regarding God’s Priorities (Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done.) After God’s Praise and God’s Priorities, we come to our Petitions- for provisions (daily bread), pardon (forgive us our debts) and now we come to “Lead us not into temptation.”

Doesn’t this seem like an odd request? We are told clearly that “God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt any man.” James 1:13. But this is just an old way of saying, “lead me away from temptation.” This prayer makes sense in light of what Jesus said to his sleepy disciples as he agonized in prayer in the garden, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” Mt.26:41. Jesus command to “watch” reminds me of a military watch or guard. They were to keep watch, to be alert! “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8 NLT. Being watchful or alert and prayerful comes out in Paul’s following exhortation- “Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. Col.4:2 NLT. Looking at these last three verses, we see that we must be alert and prayerful to deal with temptation. I wonder how many times a day, people fall prey to it because they don’t pray. God wants to lead us away from temptation, not be led into temptation, so he has given plenty of guidance for victory over it throughout his word. Here are several important points to keep in mind for ourselves and our protégés.

1.-Don’t believe the serpent’s lies. From the beginning Satan has deceived people into believing that God’s way isn’t the best way. His oft' repeated lie is-“God can’t be trusted. There’s more to life- if it looks good, go for it!”

2.-Keep a healthy distance from tempting people, places and things (Ps.1:1; Prov.7:6-10). If you can’t change your friends, change your friends. Fix your focus on delighting in God’s good ways instead.

3.-Get rid of whatever has been tripping you up and change your stinking thinking. Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don't let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires. (Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh."Rom.13:14)

4.-Name the temptation for what it truly is. When Joseph was tempted by Potiphar’s wife, he said, “How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?!” Gen.39:9.

5.-Temptation looks far better than it ever is. “It’s might look like big scoops of chocolate ice cream covered with whip cream, but each scoop is just horse poop. Anyone for it now? Sin’s aftertaste is truly disgusting. Let the ruined lives of those who have gone after sin, remind you of this. Do you want to end up like them? See Prov.5:8-14

6.-The gravitational pull toward the temptation gets weaker the farther you move away from it in thought and action. That’s why the Bible says, “Flee the evil desires…” 2 Tim.2:22. But nature abhors a vacuum We must replace the evil with the good. "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Rom.12:21. IT's like going on a diet. "Get out the bad, get in the good."Replace hurtful behaviors with helpful ones.

7.-Thank the devil, so to speak, for the temptation. I’m not really on speaking terms with Satan, but it is a great way to frustrate his tempting ways. Every time a tempting thought invades, let it serve as a reminder to thank and praise Jesus for his victory over sin and Satan. Singing a praise song works wonders for many and many a time. Satan can’t stand a singing saint. (Speaking of speaking to the devil, it’s been said, “Every time the devil reminds you of your past, remind him of his future.”:)

8.-Remember that sins of the body must be conquered (swearing, stealing, lying, cheating, drugging, immorality, etc.) but sins of the heart we will battle until the day we die. We will keep fighting the good fight of faith against such ongoing foes of pride, lust, greed, passivity, unfaithfulness, lack of love, etc. That’s not good news, but it’s the truth and it’s a way we can demonstrate our love and faith to God. Our devoted redeemer and holy one is worthy of our devotion and holiness. Battle on! You are not alone. (1 Pet.5:8-9)

9.-Recognize, you are no match for temptation when you get too close to it. So flee it. Be alert. What’s going on in your heart? Are you attracted to a pretty woman that you have no business getting close to at your place of business? Establish wise boundaries. Here are some that wise men have established to protect themselves from an affair- "I will not flirt. I will not be huggy and touchy. I will not share my marital issues. I will not linger. I will not be go out for a meal alone or chauffer her alone. I will use my wedding ring as a reminder to myself and others." It’s not a sin to be attracted to an attractive woman. That just proves you’re a healthy man. But to flirt with her just proves you’re a foolish man. (Prov.6:20-7:27)

10.- Renew your mind. “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” Rom.12:2. Write down key MP3 verses on your 3x5 to help you in your specific temptations and review them frequently. Let the temptation again trigger you to pray, to move away and to review transforming truths. Let old weaknesses prompt you to become strong in God’s word.

Tomorrow, we will look at more practical points from God's word on dealing with temptation.

1. Several passages have been quoted or referred to. Pick one and share your thoughts on it.

2. Write a key portion of the passage on your 3x5 for later mediation, prayer, praise and passing on. After you've written it out, do the Did it.

3. Anybody got an R to post since New Year's Eve? One will suffice for even a few wrongs you sought to make right. Way to go!

Online pornography has become a huge source of temptation and destruction in millions of men's lives. Chris White is a Bible teacher who earlier in his Christian life struggled and eventually gained freedom over such. He tells his story on a YouTube video he posted. http://conspiracyclothes.com/nowheretorun/video-archive/?tubepress_page=2  Check it out if you wish. It could be a helpful resource to proteges and others who may need your help in this area. He doesn't mention installing online filters, but that can be a big help. Of course if a guy installs such himself, he could easily uninstall it. I had a techy friend come over and put such on all the data coming into our home. Peace of mind.

You did great on the Review Test. I knew you would! I didn't want to overload you while you were doing the 2 day test last Thursday and Friday, so there were other MP3s or such to do. Thus, there is no Great Scoreboard to update and post today or tomorrow.

Announcements
Some of you already know that Daniel's father-in-law passed away this past weekend. I know he appreciates the texts and calls of love and support you've given him and his wife Martha. They spent a lot of time in the hospital since New Year's Eve. We love you Daniel!

  1. 1.- Rom 12:2 Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Personally I have found this verse to be so true in my daily life, specially since we started our training. Starting my day reflecting on God's Word and having my MP3 card has helped me to keep my mind from wondering into areas it shouldn't. When I have a couple of spare minutes where I could let my mind wonder instead I pull out my MP3 card and begin to pray it into my heart.
Thank you Lord that every day you provide a way out so I don't fall for into temptation.

  3. 1. Have been reading Proverbs as part of the church reading plan. This weekend I looked at Proverbs 3,4,5. They really spoke to me in the idea of considering our ways. Proverbs 5:21-22 says, for a man's ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all his paths. The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him;the cords of his sin hold him fast. The Lord sees everything we do and examines it. Sin can trap us like a snare and keep us captive. Temptation can lead to sin which can take a strong grip on our souls and it could be harder to break as we continue In such ways. Jesus set us free from sin, we are no longer captives to sin, but slaves of righteousness. Without God's help and powerful Word, it is nearly impossible to overcome sinful ways, thoughts and desires. Let us be fully dependent on Jesus, our great High Priest. "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet was without sin." Hebrews 5:15

  4. Romans12:21 "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
Much of your post has triggered deep thoughts for me, as I have learned to flee from tempting thoughts by turning to the Word. I realize that every time my mind strays it pulls away focus from The Lord and it's all about him not my tempting desires. How can a man serve or praise 2 Gid's--lust/money/pride/etc. and fully be a servant of our only Godly Father? He can't --so I devote my life to serving the Father and his loving people. The deeper my faith and obedience grow and time spent helping others the less frequently I am tempted by the evil. 1.
Proverbs 6 is also powerful as well as Dave's post today on avoidance of deadly sins that must be avoided as we move forward in Christ.

  5. 1. 2 Timothy 2:22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

I certainly needed to flee from sin before I became a believer. I made so many mistakes and hurt my family. I chose to follow the Lord and not my own desires.I have said for a while, that the decisions we make shape our destiny. The continuation of bad choices leads to death. I chose everlasting life.

  6. 1. Romans 12:2 "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

I've heard that wrong thinking leads to wrong living. Max Lucado said "Today's thoughts are tomorrow's actions". The verse teaches me that I'm in need of a complete overhaul of how I process thoughts, "by the renewing of your mind". This happens through the Word of God (Romans 10:17 "Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ". I regularly think of point # 9 "Recognize, you are no match for temptation when you get too close to it. So flee it. Be alert." We're constantly bombarded with temptation from all angles. I recognize my weaknesses/temptations and make a conscience effort to avoid them. God has not brought us thus far to abandon us nor forsake us (Joshua 1:9) and the good work he has started in us, he'll see it to completion (Philippians 1:6).

    3. Brother Daniel, my condolences for your loss. May our Lord calm the storm around you and quiet your heart in this season of bereavement. May he grant you and your loved ones the peace that surpasses all understanding to guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

    4. Brother Jack, I pray and hope you're recovering well from your surgery.

I notice that this verse tells us a spiritual action. That help but in my life I feel it can also be a physical action. What I mean by that is when am tempted I tend to leave that area, go do something else call someone. I like when the blog said " Sin’s aftertaste is truly disgusting." it so true. At the moment of sins its a "great" feeling. But afterward I feel terrible. I noticed in my life that aftertaste tend to lead towards GOD. THANK YOU JESUS. What is comforting to me is knowing that there other brothers out there with the same or similar struggles I may have. I know now that am not alone. In our struggles we get stronger when we seek GOD face with all of our hearts. He is always faithful.

My mentor Daniel you in my prayers my brother.

    GOD BLESS

  8. I Peter 5:8 Be alert and sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. NLV. This caught my attention because it is a constant reminder that the devil is always trying to take souls away from God. We know God is more powerful than the devil. But we are at times weak in the flesh. So stay strong and keep in the Word and we will all be welcome in God's house.

  10. I believe that while Jesus talks to the disciples he tells them not to fall asleep; he holds them accountable, (Mt.26:41). While we have to be mission minded it can be easy to get distracted and turn from what we are supposed to be doing. Just like our concentration on the 3x5 card is that we battle against the giant eraser machine a major battle in temptation is forgetting the identity of Christ as well as our own. As Jesus says "our flesh is weak," Thus we must be diligent to concentrate and stay focused. Dave, since you mentioned Watching Guard it reminded me of Habakkuk (2:1) "I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts." The means to me that by being enabled to stay focused we stand our watch and fulfil what God has set out for us without temptation.

My prayer today is that God not lead me into temptation by not letting me forget

    2. Gary, You are so right that the weakness of our flesh is something the Word or God clearly warns us about. How awesome God is to restore us when we do fall, and also how glorious it is to God by granting us victory in spiritual battle when we are alert and fighting in His strength and might.

  11. 1) Romans 13:14 “Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.”
I'm going to ask the Holy Spirit to bring this verse to my mind in times of temptation. It looks like it can give me a one–two punch back at temptation when I'm alert that temptation is striking. The first punch I would make would probably be doing the 2nd part of the verse first “do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.” I can see myself making this first punch by reminding myself how deceiving sin is and how I've been burnt by it too many times. Sometimes the Holy Spirit brings to my mind something I learned a while back at a revival meeting called “The 3 Things That Sin Will Always Do” 1) Sin will always take you farther then your want to go. 2) Sin will always keep you longer then you want to stay. 3) Sin will always cost you more then you were wiling to pay. Reminding myself of this should help me to see through the deceit of gratifying my sinful desires and to realize the cringing, unpleasant disasters that await.
The 2nd punch I would make from Romans 13:14 at temptation would be to do “clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ”. I can do this by reminding myself that I belong to Jesus Christ and I am His possession that was dearly paid for. I can picture myself like I'm a priceless watch being put inside a breast pocket of the suite that Christ is wearing. I can also do this by imagining that I am getting dressed in the clothes that Jesus gives me which are Christ like attitudes I am to have and Christ like actions I am to do. So with the Holy Spirit's help and prompting, I'm going to make Romans 13:14 my one-two punch against temptation.

  12. I chose this same verse as well Dave. I focused on the first part- Clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ (Put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ)Commentators brought out two aspects of this clothing. First, it's relying on his provision- His provided righteousness, holiness, power, grace, love, goodness, etc. And second, it's reflecting his person. Wearing another's clothing reveals the desire to look like that person. O help us rely on you and reflect you Lord. We will get much farther down the road from temptation and sin when we long to rely on him and reflect him.

  13. 1. The scripture that really got me thinking today was actually one of the passages from the introduction today: “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8. On Sunday when I was doing my bible reading I came across a passage in Genesis 4 where God is speaking to Cain about his slaying of his brother Abel. Verse 4 reads, "If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” What caught my attention is the way sin is described in both passages; that it lurks looking for just the right minute, the most opportune time to overtake us. These scriptures are a constant reminder of the vigilance that we must have to keep our defenses up against a stealthy enemy.

    2. I've already used this verse before, but it so powerfully applies her also: Romans 12:2 "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind..." this is my MP3.

  14. Keep a healthy distance from tempting people, places and things (Ps.1:1; Prov.7:6-10). If you can’t change your friends, change your friends. Fix your focus on delighting in God’s good ways instead.

Recognize, you are no match for temptation when you get too close to it. So flee it.
Both were vital in early in my walk with Christ but also a constant great reminder. A time when the holy spirit just calling me to flee from such places,(bars, clubs, etc)flee from people ("women" was a weakness for me). But definitely through God's grace and providing strength and bringing great godly men in my life (mentors) brought victory day by day in my life. Through some healthy much needed bounderies, was able to be alert, be watchful and be prayful.. I still read through these verses, for there is always a sinful desire trying to linger around and pre on me.

    Did it.

  16. 1. Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. Col.4:2 We are commanded to "Devote" ourselves to prayer, so I checked what exactly devote means, and the definition is: Devote= to appropriate by or as if by a vow; set apart or dedicate by a solemn or formal act; to consecrate yourself by concentrating on a particular pursuit, occupation, purpose, cause, etc. It is ironic that Pastor Mark's message last week, the final Sunday of 2014, was about "Consecrating" yourself to the Lord and for His purposes, as we prepare ourselves going into 2015. I have read this verse many times in my life, but really never noticed the "Devote" yourself to prayer part. I know that we should pray as a christian, but to be totally devoted to prayer, intentionally keeping watch, so that we do not fall into Temptation! Wow! I love what you wrote (Dave), "we see that we must be alert and prayerful to deal with temptation. I wonder how many times a day, people fall prey to it because they don’t pray." This has happened way too many times in my life. I have just decided to "Devote" a certain amount of time to prayer everyday. (Kind of like Daniel did, when the bible says that Daniel prayed 3 specific times a day). I personally have always struggled in my prayer life, and I strongly believe that this will help me dramatically, as I train myself to be godly, like 1 Timothy 4:7 says "train yourself to be godly" like a good soldier :)
