Th.1.15.15...Influence Your Father

We’ve been learning that leadership is intentional influence. Because you are seeking to intentionally influence others to join M3 that makes you a leader in that instance. How do you know if you are not a leader? Old Chinese proverb say- “He who thinketh he leadeth, but no one followeth, taketh a walk.” Okay, so how can I increase my influence? What a great question you’ve raised, worthy of a lot of discussion. But let’s start today by focusing on the most powerful principle of all to increase your influence. It’s a three letter word I’m going to reveal to you. Though it’s not used in the following story, it's well illustrated in it, and it’s crucial to seeing how it works. So please now read Ex.17:8-16. No fair going forward without first reading it.

Over the past few days we've seen how we are in an invisible, but very real spiritual war. In this story involving Moses and Joshua, we see an early battle that was won or lost in relation to the lifting up hands to heaven- a symbolic act of prayer. Paul wrote, “I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer without anger or disputing” 1 Tim.2:8. Moses was symbolically revealing our “secret” power principle of influence. I’ll share it with you in just a moment. (Am I building your curiosity?)

Your children and mine are masters at using this three letter word. It’s such a power tool of influence. Let me illustrate by first asking you the following crazy question- When was the last time you went down the toy isle and bought a Hot Wheels car, Legos or a Nerf gun just for yourself? Hopefully not in a long while! But I’ve bought plenty of these things for my son when he was a boy. As a matter of fact, I ended up buying him more than one of each of those items. (I must admit, I liked shopping with him for the Nerf guns-  sure wish they came out with those when I was a boy.:)

So why did I buy him stuff he didn’t even really need? What master principle of influence did he use on me and that your children have used successfully on you too? What is this supreme tool of influence that the greatest sales people and motivators use?

Ready for the three letter word? Here it is- ASK. My son asked! Often he asked several times. Let me repeat also three key words- “My son asked.” I never would have bought him any of that stuff except for two reasons- he was and is my son whom I love, and he asked me. Now apply this to your relationship with your heavenly Father. He invites you to influence him- to ask. Better yet, he tells you to ask. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” Mt.7:7-11. Do you see how Jesus is teaching us this most powerful principle of asking? And it’s all based on the fact that God is our good and generous Father. But our generous Father waits for us to ask.

Some have gone so far as to say that earth governs heaven- that God desires to even advance his kingdom, but won’t if we don’t ask for such. I’m not comfortable saying that earth governs heaven, but I am convinced that children influence their father. I never would have bought such toys for my boy if he had not specifically asked for them. He didn’t govern me, but he surely did influence me. And God’s children influence their Father. No wonder the Lord tells us to pray and ask that God would advance his kingdom and his will on earth as it is in heaven. That's why in some places great things are happening. People are fervently asking! Jesus’ half brother, James reminds us how vitally important it is that we ask- “You do not have because you do not ask God” James 4:2. That truth sure spurs me on to ask! But we are not children asking for toys. We are men asking for victories as Moses did. We lift up holy hands Lord, and we pray that you would liberate men from the powerful enemy- “Give us aid against the enemy, for human help is worthless. With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.” Ps.60:11-12. The warrior David penned that warrior's prayer. It also would have been appropriate for Moses to use as he lifted up holy hands for Joshua’s victory. Ask for victories. Your Father wants to answer!

1.-Write out this warrior’s prayer found in Ps.60:11-12 on your MP3 card (Then do the Did it.) May it strengthen you to ask our Father, who is also our Mighty Warrior, to give us victories in freeing and activating men.

Keep praying for certain men by name. Also keep praying that the men of New Life would hunger for God. I think of Jack’s testimony. He said he woke up one day and said to his wife, “I need God.” The Lord can and does create such a hunger and thirst for more of Himself. Only he can do this. That’s why it’s crucial that we ask him to do so. May it never be said of us in M3- You do not have because you didn't ask God. Father, we ask, “Give us Hungry men!

2.-Share one thought that was triggered from anything in the blog today.

3.-R?

4.-A? (Asking fervently for God to advance his kingdom, to give us hungry men, etc.)

Speaking of prayer, isn't it good to know that you have prayer partners who are covering you?! Please give them a call and thank them. Ask if they are getting the emailed prayer updates and what questions they may have for you regarding M3. Please do this by Monday and let me know via the blog as soon as you've contacted them. For some, you might be sowing seeds of future involvement in M3. Udabest! Want proof? Look below at the Unstoppable team you're a part of and contributing to. Way to go!

    2. In Ex 17 Moses becomes frustrated with the Israelites as they rebel against him and they question God's will. As they start to believe that they were led on a wild goose chase when they left Egypt and now will die of thirst. God was still faithful and provided water from the rock and then proved again that by trusting in him with your heart and soul he will lead us to victory in him and through him. His presence was evident through Moses raising his arms and leading His people to victory through his unwavering faith in God.

Identify God's calling and lean on him.
Follow his lead and lead others .
Trust in God completely and be victorious.

    1. May we lead our proteges to the ways of God. May we have faith greater than a mustard see.

Matthew 17:20 ... “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

    2. In regard to today's blog I will say that although I've never had a relationship with my biological father, almost a decade ago I was blessed to have met a man who has become like a father for me. As a father like figure he's been tremendously generous with me and a true blessing to my life in general. However some of the material things he's given me I would say compares to what I've read today. In some of the cases there are things he's done without my even asking, and in other cases it's because I've asked directly. Which was the case a couple days ago in relation to needing things for by job. He generously provided with me items that seem surprising given their cost and value. Yet as I look at the relationship of ours which is like father and son, it's not so unusual. I say all of this to say that I'm realizing that God has put such men as him in my life, but more importantly the needs and wants that have been supplied through this man who is LIKE a father, dims in comparison to what would be possible if I were to ask more of God who IS my father.

2.- Something that I thought was important is found in Ex 17:11-12
"11 Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.
12 But Moses' hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun."

God did give Israel victory because of Moses praying and having faith in God. But Moses did not accomplish this on his own, he needed the help of Aaron and Hur. The first thing that came to my mind is that the same is true today, we cannot accomplish great victories for the Kingdom without the support of other brothers. We are not in this spiritual battle alone. We need to continue to hold each other up in prayer and ASK God for victory just like we are doing in M3. Let's stay strong brothers and fight the good fight.
Lord make us unstoppable for You.

Asking for victories instead of toys. Asking for God to intervene in our lives, our church, our city, our families. This is so good. Didn't really think about asking as a tool of influence as it was presented today. But He is a Good Father and it's in His character to give. For God so loved the world that HE GAVE...

    2. "Ready for the three letter word? Here it is- ASK." God desires to give us good gifts, both materially and spiritually. But we must be mindful not to seek the blessings more than He who provides the blessings, God. God is not as interested in our comfort, as much as He's interested in our character. His heart's desires, should be our heart's desires (James 4:3 "When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.") We must consider the motives of our hearts why we're asking God to move Heaven and Earth to grant us our petitions (Proverbs 16:1-2 "To humans belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue. All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord.") I must ask myself, are my prayers in line with God's character, nature and will? If they are, I can expect to receive answers, though they may not be in the shape, form or fashion I had anticipated (yes, no, wait). So as brother Eddie shared in an earlier post, P.U.S.H. (pray until something happens).

    2) Matthew 7:7 was one of the first verses I memorized when I was little, because I would ask GOD for stuff i wanted not for stuff I needed. I agree with you Dave I give my kids stuff because they ask and I love them. That's me as a human. Imagine what our heavenly father would do for us if we ask. Our heavenly father who is more loving and forgiving than us.

    2) Exodus 17:11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning.

My study bible states that "held up his hands" is a symbol of appeal to God for help and enablement.

Lord we ask that you help us gather men that hunger for your word, may they one day commune with us. I pray that you continue to equip us with the sword of the Spirit.

What came to me from the lesson was pray for it and He will give it to you. Not at first for the most part but when He is ready. I remember when my mother got sick with brain cancer she slipped into a coma for eleven months. I prayed everyday that God would heal her body but also His will be done in her life. In the eleventh month she passed away. She was a believer so I knew she went to heaven. My prayer was answered but what I really wanted was for her to live on earth so I could have more time with her. But God had greater plains for her. With that said she was healed and she was not suffering anymore. I do miss her alot that's why I wrote yesterday on the blog that I needed prayer over my abandonment and shame issues. I know now what I didn't want to know than and that is that God did answer my prayers and he healed her by taking her to heaven. Well the abandonment issue is clear but the shame issue is that I did not spend that much time with her when she was on earth. That's a whole other story that I may share another time.

Nothing to report on number 3 today.

    2) “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Since being a part of M3, the “asking” in my praying has increased in several ways. I'm asking more. I'm asking for greater things from God. I'm praying more strategically as I'm realizing God's will for what really matters most. I'm asking for things that really impact eternity. And I'm finding my faith growing stronger as I'm more confident that God is really listening and answering. I 'm sensing that God is honored more - the more I ask. I feel like I'm just getting on track in this area of my praying. I still definitely have a ways to go in other areas of praying. Isaiah 40:28 encourages me that God will never get weary. He will never get weary of answering all the prayers and cries of all His saints.

    2. The one thing that struck me with today's blog is the consistency of God's giving nature. Our God is a god that gives. There is so much evidence in my own life of this quality of God. As His children it is a quality that we should possess as well. Luke 6:38 "Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

3.I'm working on this one...having some issues at work with some of my weaknesses and co-workers willing to exploit them. Really thinking I should right this, but not sure how. Will update tomorrow.

    2)
Sometimes asking is halter upped by a lack of faith or even forgetfulness. The thought that we can come to the Father raise our petitions and asks of our needs takes solid faith but not unimaginable faith. It reminds me of Jesus Speaking about the little children in MT 18:2-4. "He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them.  And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." We should become like in faith to that of a child. Who is naïve but not to a fault. But a child that unquestionably believes the words of his father and that his request will be fulfilled.

It's also very easy to forget that God will keep his promises and deliver when we ask. The cycles from trouble to deliverance that the Israelites endured is a reminder for me here. As well as the numerous times the Jesus says to the decouples "oh ye of little faith." To ask today is a great reminder that whatever our need is on the spiritual battlefield we can ask this of God and He is surely faithful.

    2. The one thing that struck me most today, is the simplicity of just ASKING God. When you held my suspense, before revealing the 3-letter word, I really was thinking to myself "what is Dave going to say? What is that 3-letter word?" Then you asked, What is this supreme tool of influence that the greatest sales people and motivators use? -- again I still was not 100% positive (even though I am in Sales ). What you wrote about your son resonated powerfully with me when you stated " My son asked! Often he asked several times. Let me repeat also three key words- “My son asked.” I never would have bought him any of that stuff except for two reasons- he was and is my son whom I love, and he asked me. Now apply this to your relationship with your heavenly Father. He invites you to influence him- to ask. Better yet, he tells you to ask." -- So simple and yet so profound! I stopped reading immediately and started warfare prayer asking God for many things and about future proteges by name :) I also wrote down on my 3 x 5 card, the "Secret" power Principle of Influence, is to ASK" :)

    2. WOW Dave, first I never looked on how influential the word ASK is into our lives. Now a whole bunch of memories and events come to mind from just asking. Not "telling", like our earthly father would most likely react towards silence or a type of lesson to be learned to us. Our Father in heaven does the same thing if we come to him in ignorance or in some type of authority over Him.. looking back most if all of our "superheroes" in the bible came before God and asked!!
I love the story Moses lifting his arms and when was weak Aaron and Hur helped Moses lifting his arms up. Brings reflections on being persistent, enablement By God, praying with band of "Chosen brothers"...

  14. 1. Did it. And also wrote on my 3x5 the words that Israel shared: "the 'secret' power of influence is to ASK"!

    2. I've experienced this ASK principle myself in many ways, including M3, which is a direct answer from God to an ASK that I made for The Lord to help me find men to help me grow and hold me accountable.

There was a time were I didn't ask and I only thanked God for what he was doing, but the boldness of asking helps faith grow.

I'm still growing in this space and where I am trying to reconcile the bold asking is with what is God's will, versus what is my desire. Some things are clear, such as boldly asking for men to mentor. Some things, such as next steps after I leave BP in February are more challenging as there are paths that I have skills (God given, for sure) to shape and make things happen but what is his will and purpose for me and what steps should I take, and what should I ASK for? I'm getting good counsel on this, and at this time I'm boldly asking Him for clear direction and confirmation.
