Going Deeper Project – Review of Dr. John Stevenson's Book of Titus Survey: Dr. Stevenson opened with a good introduction about the circumstances of Paul's writing to Titus. The main reason of Paul's writing was for Titus to appoint elders/overseers in every Christian assembly Crete. Below is the outline Dr. Stevenson used to survey Titus: I. LEADERS (Titus Chpt 1) A) True Teachers 1.Opening Salutations (Titus 1:1-4) 2.Titus' Job Description: to appoint elders in every town (Titus 1:5) 3. Qualifications for elders/overseers (both are the same) (Titus 1:6-9) B) False Teachers 1. The Problem of Rebellious Men (Titus1:10-11) 2. The Testimony of Rebellious Men (1:12-13) (They are liars) 3. The Solution for Rebellious Men (1:13-16) (Give strong reproof – Give solid teaching.)
II. LAITY (Titus Chpts 2 & 3) A) Instructions to Various Groups 1) Old men. 2) Old women. 3) Young women 4) Young men 5) Titus as an example 6) Slaves B) Living for the Appearing of Jesus 1)The grace of God has appeared, bring salvation 2) Instructing us 3) Looking for the appearing of Jesus C) Living in Light of Jesus 1) Remind to do good works. (Also subjection to authority) 2) Reason for good works. (We were foolish / but now saved by God) 3) A Call to good works (because we are saved) 4) Rejection of those who caused divisions (After warning them) 5) A practical exercise in good works (meet pressing needs of visiting Christian ministers)
I found the outline very helpful in understanding the flow of Paul's thoughts and purpose in writing this letter. Dr. Stevenson pointed out how Paul referred to the “Non-Lying God” and then how the Cretans had the reputation of being liars. Also to Titus was to strongly refute false teachings and counter with the sound teachings he was to guard.
From today's Message To Press forward: Just sitting in the church pew is passive. On the other hand God's calling is very active. Just like His word is living and active. May God enable us to continue in the rightful response to God's calling. Also may we be willing and able servants that will respond as examples of Christ.
Review of Dr. Stevenson's summarized video of Titus--opening salutations of Paul, an Apostle of God and his situation. Titus was sent to the island of Crete to turn around the bad habits of Cretians and appoint elders. Titus was to appoint true leaders as elders. He stated that God cannot lie and never has and the promise of God is given to us as our hope of eternal life. In Titus 1:5 Titus must appoint elders in every city. Titus 1: 6-9 he describes the job description of the elders as he appoints them. He lays out the qualifications of elders, overseers. Titus 1:10-11 He talks about false teachers in Crete and how they should be rebuked. The rebellious men of which most are liars and of are of the circumcised group of Jews. Titus 1:13-16 The solution is to provide teaching of the truth and lead by example. Titus 2: 1-10 He gives instructions to all groups--old men, old women, young women, young men, slaves, and Titus as an example. Titus 2: 11-15 Our call is to live for the appearing Jesus. The grace of God as salvation and we must deny all un-Godliness as we look for the appearing Jesus. Titus 3 Living in the light of Jesus A reminder to do good works as we are called to do. Reject those who oppose the truth and Jesus and cause division. Help others always and also provide financial help.
This was a great summary of Titus and a good exercise, It makes it easy to remember Titus.
Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”here in Jesus own words He sums up all. One thing and He throw in one more.
My GDP project using the Book of Titus Outline. To be honest, I have Never outlined a book like this before. Not sure if I will ever have to? As I basically wrote down Mr. Stevenson's notes. This form of planning a letter can be very helpful and will help the writer to keep focused: Adorning the Gospel of God ( Titus) 1. (Chapter 1) Devoted to Leaders and chapters 2 and 3 are devoted to everyone else ** Titus' Job Description: to appoint elders in every city of Crete (Titus 1:5) ** Qualifications for elders/overseers (both are the same) (Titus 1:6-9) 2. False Teachers ** The Problem of Rebellious Men (Titus 1:10-11) ** The Testimony of Rebellious Men (1:12-13) (They are liars) ** The Solution for Rebellious Men (1:13-16) (we should give them strong reproof and rebuke them sharply). This is the solution to false teachers, then follow up by teaching them sound doctrine.
3. (Titus Chapters 2 & 3 Instructions to Various Groups) ** to Old men, Old women, Young women, Young men, Titus should be an example to all, and also to Slaves 4. Living for the Appearing of Jesus- The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation, Instructing us to deny ungodliness and to live righteously, while we look for the appearing of Jesus! 5. Living in Light of Jesus - Reminding them to be subject to rulers and reminding them to do good works. We should avoid foolish controversies and geneologies and we should reject those who cause divisions within the brethren. Warn them a couple of times and then have nothing to do with them.
From today's message. One thing - aligning your life with God
ReplyDeleteThere is a mindset that people who don't get hindered by their past embrace
1. They press forward to take hold of their God given destiny - because they admit they have not yet arrived (THEY LOOK AHEAD)
Paul: Phil 3:14. I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
2. They press forward to reach their God given goal - because they refuse to be held captive by their past (THEY LOOK AHEAD)
Paul: Phil. 3:13. Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead
