Wed.1.7.15...Deliver Us from Evil

Today we come to the last petition in the Lord’s prayer, “deliver us from evil.” Literally it says, “deliver us from the evil” Thus, it could refer to the evil of our fallen enemy nature, or the evil world system or the evil one- the devil. It’s interesting to note the past, present and future deliverance from evil that Scripture reveals-

The Lord has already delivered us in the past from the evil of sin’s penalty. This is known as justification. Our position is now in Christ and we have been declared right in God’s sight. “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” Col.1:13-14. The word “rescued” here and in the following verses is the same Greek word [rhuomai] used in the Lord’s prayer “deliver” us from evil. We can give joyful thanks that he has delivered us from the evil dominion of darkness. We are no longer bound by hell and hell-bound. So as we come to praying, “deliver us from evil” it’s quite fitting to first give thanks for how the Lord already has delivered us from evil.

In the present time, the Lord is delivering us from the evil of sin and Satan’s power. This is known as sanctification, where we are becoming more sanctified (that means "holy") in our practice. In light of what he did for us in our past, we now gratefully want to please him in the present. But there’s a problem. Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?" Rom.7:21-24. We can't rescue or deliver ourselves from our old evil nature anymore than a drowning man can rescue himself. This reminds us again of our need to pray- “deliver us from evil.” For the Christian life is not hard, it’s impossible apart from the power of Christ. But we are not left to rescue ourselves. So Paul then celebrates there is Someone who will deliver him from this evil. “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Rom.7:25 It is the power of the Spirit within that enables us to overcome the downward pull of evil. Just as the law of flight (aerodynamics) is greater than the law of gravity, the power of the Spirit is greater than the power of our evil nature. As I trust and obey him, I gain the victory. He teaches me to say "No" to evil and to live to please my coming King (Titus 2:12-14). So presently, daily, I can thank the Lord and pray to be delivered from evil.

But in this present evil age, we also know that the whole world is under the control of the evil one” 1 John 5:19. [Literally- “the whole world lies in the evil one” It lies in his jurisdiction.] We know that God is the ultimate ruler, but those who rebel against Him are under the jurisdiction of the evil one. And evil people do the will of the evil one, including persecuting God’s people. That’s why Paul said, “Pray that I will be rescued [delivered] from perverse and evil men” 2 Th.3:2. We need to remember to pray for our persecuted brothers in other lands- “deliver them from evil”- from evil men and the evil one. Wouldn’t we want people praying for us if we were venturing into the enemy’s dominion? Aren’t you glad we have prayer warriors praying for us? If severe persecution should ever come to our shores, would we be unstoppable? What mindset would it take to remain true to the Lord, even unto death? The answer is revealed in Rev.12:11- “They triumphed over him [the evil one] by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.” Paul put it this way- “I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace” Acts 20:24. Paul was unstoppable. May we also be.

Isn’t this the attitude of those in the military? Seal Team 6 that took out Osama Bin Laden thought they were going on a suicide mission. They didn’t expect to come back, yet they didn't cower. Why? They had dedicated themselves to the mission. They didn't shrink from death or pain. They were unstoppable. “No man can be brave who thinks pain the greatest evil.” Cicero. The greatest evil would be shrinking back from persecution and death just to save my skin for a few more years, before standing before the One who sacrificed his life to rescue me from evil and eternal flames.

Finally, one day in the future, he will deliver us even from the presence of evil and the evil one, and he will complete his transforming work in us. This is known as glorification. “When Christ, who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory” Col.3:4. What a day of rejoicing that will be! So our prayer, “deliver us from evil” can also express our longing for that day when Christ returns and makes this wrong world right and we are forever delivered from even the presence of evil.

1.-Several Scriptures have been quoted in the blog today regarding, “Deliver us from evil.” Please comment on one or something that was said in the blog that struck you.

2.-May we become unstoppable, like Paul. Write down the first half of Acts 20:24 on your 3x5. The new NIV puts it this way- “I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me-” Our task is to multiply MANLY men. (Feel free to use whatever version you prefer. Do the “Did it” when you did it.) 3.-Cowards avoid sacrifice, pain and death. Write out a manly prayer of unstoppable dedication. It may resemble your Acts 20:34 MP3 or you may want to word it differently.

"Deliver us from evil" reminds us that we are in a war and we need to pray that God would provide us spiritual protection. Yet, this is rarely sought. Often I hear people pray for God to give them physical protection as they travel. That's fine. But rarely do I hear people pray for spiritual protection. The armor of God is described in  Eph.6 precisely because we are in a war and need protection. "Put on the gospel armor, put on each piece with prayer."

  1. 1.- Rom 7:24 Thanks be to God, who delivers me thorough Jesus Christ our Lord.
After learning yesterday that being thankful to God can be a way of fighting temptation once again in this verse I see that I can thank God that He is the only one that can deliver me and through the Holy Spirit I can be victorious over temptation. Thank you Lord for this great truth.

    2.- Did it.

3.- Dear Lord help me remember that without You my life is worth nothing. Make the only goal in my life be to do the will that You have for me. Thank you that your Word promises that will give me victory if I rely on You only.

  2. 1. My study bible says, the influence and destructive power satan and sin have over the world has been broken only through the authority of Christ. We may fall to this darkness, but we don't have to, because in Christ we have all the resources to overcome this dominion of darkness.

    2. Did it.

    3. Philippians 1: 20-1 came to my mind. So Lord Jesus, I pray that I would not be ashamed in carrying out the task you have laid before us, the task of preaching your Gospel. I pray that we would walk with sufficient courage and we would grow in boldness, so that you, God, would be exalted in my body, whether by life or death. Let this be true in my life, to live is Christ and to die is gain. In Jesus powerful Name, Amen.

  3. 1. “Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. What's traditionally known as "The Lord's (Jesus) Prayer" is a great outline/pattern as to how we can approach/pray to God the Father. But, it has been mislabeled for it is not the Lord's prayer, it's more along the line of the Disciple's prayer. The Disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray as John the baptizer had done with his own followers. The real Lord's (Jesus) prayer is found in John 17. In his prayer Jesus states the following, John 17:15 "My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one." Many of times people ask, "Well if God knew that man would sin, why did he place the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the middle of the the garden?" I've been guilty of asking the same question. We cultivate a mentality of removing the trees of all temptations from our garden/lives. The question is not one of temptation, but of obedience to God.

    2. Lord Abba Father, please incline your ear to our prayers and grant us the desires of our hearts to honor and serve you. May our victories be in Christ Jesus, who overcame the evil one by his atoning sacrifice on the cross and paying a debt we could never afford. You Father, have lavished your extravagant love upon us in that while we were still sinners, you gave us your most precious of possessions in Jesus so that we may have life abundant. To you Father, be all the glory, honor and praise for ever and ever, amen!

    3. Did it :-)

    1. Excellent Robert! Yes, I've heard the Lord's prayer entitled the "Disciple's Prayer" also. You are a good student of God's word and I'm so glad to have you on board!

  4. “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Rom.7:25
I like a song from casting crowns "I will praise you in this storm". I believe that giving thanks to GOD is a powerful tool to overcome a lot problems. Just knowing that he has everything under control. GOD never loses. That something that I can hold on to. GOD wants to deliver us and we have already been delivered.

My prayers lord is that you keep me in your hand. Continue to mold me into the Man to want me to be. May you never leave my side. Thank you lord. In JESUS name amen.

  5. 1.Col.1: 13-14 " For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins"
Wow moment for me! I give thanks to the Lord almighty for him delivering me from evil.
I spent much of my life believing fully in God, but concerned if I was going to heaven or Hell for my sin against the Lord. I sat in the back of the catholic church talking to the Father and begging for forgiveness, and confessing to a Priest that I knew had no control of forgiveness.
When I accepted the Lord and was transformed inside, and after I confessed my sins and changed my worldly ways--I knew I had been rescued. Sounds simple, right? But was it for real ? Was I living by faith and his word and was I obedient?
In August, I had the most amazing thing happen; I had a very severe car accident which could have been fatal--amazing?
I was severely injured and could barely breath--as a loud clicking came from my chest with each very small breath and the EMT thought they might lose me. But instantly when the accident happened; I looked up to the Lord and said " If you are ready for me Lord--I am ready- then I began to give him Praise offerings and thanked him for rescuing me from the dominion of darkness. I thanked him for sparing my daughter whom I had just dropped off at work--because she probably would have been killed. I begged him to protect the other driver.
Once I knew I was going to live--I said Lord please let me know your will for me and how can I serve you Lord. Thank you Father for rescuing me from the darkness!

    3. Lord I thank you for rescuing me and showing me freedom. Thank you for your word which discloses your will; and now
I will live to fulfill my part in helping others find salvation in you Lord!

  6. I chose Acts 20:24 “I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me-” I not only believe I know that God has given all of us a gift to conduct. God expect us to serve Him and others with all our hearts. I know at times it seem hard to do but remember the One who gave us the gift/ task and serve Him as if He was standing before for. The devil hates to see us do God's will. The devil wants us to fail and fall. Keep your eyes on the heavens and don't sweat the little things.

    Did it.

My prayer for all of us is "God please help us help others and give us a extra shield of protection to further Your kingdom. Please give us the knowledge/ wisdom to speak to and plant seeds in others. Please keep the devil away from our door steps. Amen

  7. 1) Colossians 1:13-141
13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

I thank God for taking me out of the darkness of sin, especially when I was unaware of it. Through Him I have been redeemed and forgiven.

    3) Dear God thank you for your sacrifice, I pray that we continue to fight the good fight, I pray that we finish the race honorably in God eyes.
    2 Timothy 4:7
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

R- For yesterday. It was my little girl this time. She has days were she is afraid to sleep in her bed. She is afraid of the dark and bad thoughts go through her head. I tell her to pray and trust God. I tell her nothing is going to happen to Her. She starts to cry when I tell her to go to her bed. I got upset for her not trusting God and myself. I could not pray for her because I was so upset. I called her a cry baby. I do not know where she gets this fear. I don't ever remember being afraid of the dark or sleeping alone. At least not when I was ten. I settled down and manned up and apologized for being insensitive. I prayed for her. Should have been my first reaction.

  8. 1) Rev 12:11They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.

Digging deep today opened up what sacrifice really means. It is not the artificial sacrifice of throwing one's self at the enemy without any thought and purpose of who we are in service of. Instead the sacrifice is in all that we do for the glory of God. If Christ sacrificed all to allow humanity to choose and see redemption then it would be very shameful for me to identify with Christ and not live to the best of my ability. But praying this prayer is a humbling focus on how to live. In which I would like to go back to 1 Cor 10:31 "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."

I am always encouraged by the bravery in the men that I see and know also requesting from God to make me to be more brave that I was yesterday. Wouldn’t want to be the type that was frivolous, just full of works that were meaningless to God. Nor would I want to be so selfish that another man would have to cover the ground that I was requested to conquer.

    2) Did it

    3) Father God, I thank you that that there is a mission for my life an you guide me and enable me to do it even as I battle with not wanting to go with your set vision. I pray that as I continue to dedicate my life and become more like Christ I dare not to make my sacrifice in vain live fully to the Glory of God asking for bravery and spiritual protection that I will triumph over the enemy in me and the enemy that has dominion over this world

  9. Romans 7:21-24 NIV

So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?

Yes, thank you Lord for wearing and being that MANLY MAN for us. It is in you, Jesus, that can release, deliver, break free from such evil and the fruit of its evil desires.

I pray that my life be saturated with your powerful word. That i may be used in advancement of your kingdom to hearts that do not know you yet and to hearts that are far from you.

  10. “The greatest evil would be shrinking back from persecution and death just to save my skin for a few more years, before standing before the One who sacrificed his life to rescue me from evil and eternal flames.” - What a sobering true statement. I'm afraid that there were moments in the past when I was so caught up in the world that I could have rationalized saving my skin for a few more years in order to avoid the pain and suffering of persecution and death. I had allowed my sinful nature to let greed, which is idolatry grip my heart because I wanted to hang on to the meager things I had and the vain things I wanted.

Thanks be to God, who delivered me from the idols in my heart through Jesus Christ our Lord. I know that I am so weak and fearful on my own. But Lord, in your strength and can put to death this sinful nature within me that wants to hold me back. In your strength, I can have courage and boldness to face and stand up to opposition and persecution even to the point of death. Lord, help me to not yield any more ground to the enemy but to keep pushing forward in your power and might.

Woo-Hoo :) Our daily conduct should reflect our allegiance to God :)

    3. Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for forgiving all of my past, present, and future sins! Wow, You are so good and merciful and full of Grace! Help me to be single-minded in my dedication and devotion to You and Your ways, help me not to stray to the left or to the right, but to remain humble, totally dependent on You, so that I may proclaim the gospel and Your ways boldly, as I should! Help me not to lean on my own understanding but to acknowledge You and all of Your ways as first and foremost! I consider my life worth nothing to me, Oh to know You and the power of Your resurrection from the dead! In Jesus Name, Amen.

  13. 1. Romans 7: 21-23 "So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me" This passage speaks to the dualism that exists within every believer that is simply a "by-product" of the fall of man. I find it to be so ironic that the Lord has placed eternity within our finite hearts and minds. Furthermore, that at the same time we exist as justified by Christ and can be troubled by and even prey to sin (still perseverating on the "sneakiness of sin" concept from the last few days). Paul understood this well and writes about it in Romans. I'm thinking,"If I'm struggling like Paul did, than I'm in good company." I find it to sort of be a relief yet at the same time a marvelous reminder of God's love for me. The reminder that I am not condemned, but redeemed!

    3. Lord, I am fully aware that there have been times in my life when I have been a half-stepping, selfish pretender whose central desire is to finish first at being first in my life. No runner can win a race that finishes in two opposite directions. Such a runner must chose one direction and push hard to get there. Lord, empower me to do your will. My desire is to finish your race and finish it strong. Whatever it takes Lord to build on your kingdom is what I establish as my "finish line." Point out to me when I'm running with a double-mind Lord that I might confess and refocus my energy to following your will. In Jesus Name...Amen!
