Th.1.22.15...Being a Godly MENTOR...(Model part 4)

We’re continuing to discover how to be a godly MENTOR and we’ve found that it begins by being a godly Model or example for others to follow or imitate. Paul wrote to Titus, one of the men he had mentored, “In everything set them an example by doing what is good.” Titus 2:7. Even though Crete was infamous for liars, evil brutes and lazy gluttons, Titus was given the mission to conquer Crete for Christ. His strategy was so successful it reminds me of the brilliant strategist, Gen. Stormin' Norman Schwarzkopf of Operation Desert Storm.

Titus was given a victorious strategy- find and appoint elders- men who would be good models and leaders for others to follow. We looked at their job qualifications yesterday and saw that it focused, not on having Bible college or seminary credentials, but on their character. Those elders (think of them as military officers or M3 coaches:) and Titus were to model godliness and teach godliness. Read why this was so crucial in Titus 1:9-11.

Now read what was to be taught to people in Titus 2:1-10.
Note that the word “teach” or “teaching” is repeatedly used in this passage. But they weren’t to teach a class on church history. (That would have been a short course back then.) Notice what was to be taught as you read through 2:1-10.

The older women were and are to be training (mentoring) the younger women in day to day godly living. In light of what we know from Proverbs, the older men were, and are, to be very involved in mentoring younger men. Tragically, this is sorely lacking in our day, with horrible consequences. We’re out to change that.

Titus 2:8 is a rebuke to a lot of Christians who still cuss. This is a terrible example. More on that another day.

In Titus 2:9-10, there’s an exhortation to slaves. Thankfully, we don’t have slaves today, though you may feel like such at work. So for application purposes, you could substitute the word, “employees” in place of “slaves.” The ending of Titus 2:10 could be applied to us and all people groups addressed. As we and our families and protégés live to please and reflect Christ, we will “make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.” Sadly, “the carnality of Crete” (ungodly words and deeds) is still in a lot of Christians, making Christianity repulsive, versus attractive to many. We are striving to set an attractive example. And we R when we blow it with people.

1.-Write on your MP3 card this powerful challenge for us and our protégés- “Make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.” Titus 2:10.

2.-There are lots of character qualities listed in this passage that are needful for all people of all ages and genders. What is one listed within 2:1-10 that you think is especially important for yourself and/or our proteges? (As we reflect such, we will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.)

Do you see how effective this strategy is that Paul gave Titus to conquer Crete? Find and enlist elders (coaches) who model a godly life, who then will teach and train people to live godly lives. This is our strategy as well- to multiply MANLY men.

3.-To conquer Crete for Christ, teaching God’s word for transformation was and is essential. Sadly in our day, biblical ignorance is at an all time high, and so are our troubles . Remember that GDP? (Growing Deeper Project). Several of you need to yet complete one, so I will help you. (Who loves ya?) Here’s a great YouTube link to a short overview of Titus by a very good Bible college professor- Dr. John Stevenson.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVR_T8YFDMw
(I also like his presentation because you're not having to stare at a talking head.) First, he covers 1 Timothy, so you can advance to 8min.36sec to begin at Titus. It ends at 17:32 sec. so it’s only 9 minutes long. You may never have heard anyone summarize a Bible book in such a short, yet thorough way. So I hope you like this a lot, my devoted ones to God’s word. Here’s all I ask to knock out your GDP. Take some notes on his presentation and let me know how you liked this quick Bible book overview. Then post your notes and opinion of such by Monday’s blog (You could also post it today or on Sunday's). You’ll get credit for completing your GDP and you’ll help me with something I’m working on for you. Thanks!

2.- Titus 2:8 "and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us."

To me this is a very important verse because it is so easy to give a bad testimony by what we talk about or say about other people. Instead we should be doing the opposite, always speaking God's truth so that we can inspire and build up people around us by our example. Dear Lord help us to be imitators of Jesus so that can be held above reproach.

  2. 1. Titus 2:2 "Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance."

"in love" 1 Peter 4:8 "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins." Proverbs 10:12 "Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs." Love, love, love, much can be said about love. Another word for love is charity, which is love in action. Don't just say you love, demonstrate it with your actions. "Actions speak louder than words."(Author unknown)

"in endurance" Revelations 14:12 "This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus." Endurance according to Dictionary.com is: "the ability or strength to continue or last, especially despite fatigue, stress, or other adverse conditions; stamina" It amazes me when we want things but we're not willing to work for it, the payoff without the sacrifice. "Our Christian life is a marathon, not a sprint".(Author unknown, to me)

a good character trait is our work ethic and honesty at work. if we have the attitude that what we're doing is not for man but for God.I think that would make our God attractive by the way we work.

the god that does not lie what a great statement and a great way to describe our God.

    2. Titus 2:6 - likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.
Galatians 5 talks about the fruits of the spirit. Self-control is listed as one of them. Without the help of God, the Helper, the Holy Spirit, it is hard to produce these fruits and live out life, as Paul is calling us to in Titus and Timothy. As we live and walk in obedience that fruit can grow and increase and be visible to others. Paul tells Titus to teach men and women, young and old, to be self-controlled. Naturally we want to be selfish and do what's best for our self. That's why it is so important to be living by the Spirit so that we will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. By operating by the Spirit we can live and do things contrary to our selfish desires. So that when we are in an environment, such as Titus was in Crete, where everyone is ok with responding to their desires, but we operate in the Spirit and exercise self-control then we are living a questionable life. A life that gets people asking questions that may ultimately be attractive and point to God.

Titus 2:2 "Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-control, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance." Unfortunately I could not pick just one character quality. Verse 2 is a perfect start for me. How can anyone follow us if we do not have these character qualities. If we live by these we will be a good example for others and a shining light for God.

Reviewed the youtube study. The notes I took was We have a promise of a non-lying God. Paul's job was to appoint elders/ overseers. There will be false teachers/ teaching. Lead by example. Live for the appearing of Jesus. Do good works. Reject those who causes divisions. All of these are important to remember. The most important to me is knowing and always knew that God is not a lair. He is just and kind and always loving. If we live life like we are walking side by side with God than we will be good examples for others.

    2) veres 6 "exhort the young men to be soion ber minded" I believe that exhortation is deeply lacking in most of the christian circles that i have visited, especially in a christian culture that is hyper love while using grace as an excuse to not "speak " truth that hurts and causes pain i am not advocating truth without love. brutality is not chritianity, but certainly the confrontation that produces repentance in cludes godly sorrow. on top of that i believe that to exhort another believer you must first educate yourself lest you become the blind that leads the blind. and finially to be soberminded in a world full of distractions i think is good and difficult advise, but may i be sober minded as those who love me rebuke me.

2.Titus 2: 5-6 Paul Talks about being self-controlled and pure for women, however this applies to all of us. For us as coaches and our protégés we need to follow this, as also in 1 Timothy 2;11-15 Paul was no sexist but rather believed in equality of men and women before God. As we read the word daily it continually leads us to living a controlled life before being pure before God always. We live for God now and therefore must not give in to our evil desires --as we must lean on Jesus when we are most vulnerable. This is what I will work on with our protégés--learn the word, live it and be self disciplined, as it is our own decisions that we control. Be pure in your thoughts and recognize when the evil one is attacking us--stand strong with the Lord.

    2) Titus 2:7-8New International Version (NIV)

"7 In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us".

I feel in your teaching showing integrity is important for me. We as coaches will have to teach our protégés. They will look up to us and to be honest they may put us on a pedestal, or in other words to be perfect. The bible say my people perish because of lack of knowledge. So teaching is very important. We teach them and practice what we teach so that they may understand that we are human and we will make mistakes. My mom always says to me " when you talk it out, you understand." So when things happen our protégés will be understanding and not be judgmental. I like this definition of integrity "the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness."
    3) I like the fact he broke down verse and chapters. He gave meaning to certain words other languages.
. chapter 1 was about leaders verse 1-9 true leaders 10-16 false teachers
. Rest of chapters deals with everyone else.

    2) Of the character qualities listed within Titus 2:1-10 that I think is especially important for myself and/or our proteges is self control. As one of the fruits of the Spirit, self control helps us and our proteges to be disciplined and consistent in the spiritual basics of daily feeding on the Word of God, connecting with God in pray, and living our lives for God. Self control helps us and our proteges to remain firm in God's ways when we feel swayed by impulses, desires and temptation.

    Titus 2:2

Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self controlled.

Tall order to fullfil. Men are about respect and if they are not in the word, they will not accept godly counsel. I know I was hot headed with my wife bc. That is one of the reasons that many men lose their lives in the streets. They think they need to get the respect of other men, when indeed they have to drop to their knees and worship God.

    James 1:19-21

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

  13. Did it. Wrote the quote and Titus 2:10 on the card

After detailing yesterday the first major item of being above reproach or beyond blame I see today a trait that is repeated. "Self-Controlled." It is the ability to control ones emotions or desires or the expressions of them. Applying self-control, it is that we are in less control the Holy spirit residing within is in control. For example without a Hot head the truth about God is simpler to communicate.

Us as coaches can lead by nonverbal example that protégés can follow via intentional influence. To be self-controlled is a major example of a changed heart and a walk with Christ. To be such is inspired and intentional, and also take time in maturity. However it is one of the many qualities that equates to the image of Christ.

    2. Agree with Gary and others above about the importance of self control, which is mentioned repeatedly in 2:1-10 and is a gift from the spirit that I claim for my life, in Jesus' name. I am also inspired by Jack's words today "As we read the word daily it continually leads us to living a controlled life"... Lord, I will hide your word in my heart and learn it, live it and create a space for the the gift of self control to come in and drive me to that which is from You, not from myself.

    4. My R today is conviction upon reading "Titus 2:8 is a rebuke to a lot of Christians who still cuss. This is a terrible example. More on that another day." Due to not exercising self control, I carelessly threw in a mid-tier swear word in a comment to a coworker, and I repent from that and declare that it is not who I am meant to be. I will be more diligent in watching my words and even more so around non believers. I R because I blew it today.

    2. I chose verses 9 & 10 that states "Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive." --As a small business owner myself, I see the importance of this. The employer is looking for a worker that is honest and trustworthy and someone who takes responsibility and ownership of their actions, that will hopefully "Prosper his employer". I believe that every employee's goal is to help his employer prosper and be successful, as a result of his/her work ethic. I have seen way too much an attitude of "entitlement" by employees and a less than stellar work ethic. Very sad :(
