Wed.1.28.15...Being a Godly MENTOR...(Model part 8)

2:04 p.m., March 23, 2003 Associated Press
KUWAIT CITY – A U.S. soldier most likely acted out of resentment Sunday when he threw grenades into tents at a 101st Airborne Division command center, killing a fellow serviceman, an Army spokesman said. Fifteen other soldiers, including the division commander, were wounded – at least three of them seriously …The soldier in custody was identified Sunday as Sgt. Asan Akbar of the 326th Engineer Battalion. Fort Campbell spokesman George Heath said…Akbar had been "having what some might call an attitude problem."

I’d say he had a huge attitude problem! It’s tragic that his bad attitude problem wasn’t recognized and dealt with earlier, before things so escalated. Even in the army of God, if bad attitudes and behaviors are not confronted, great damage can occur. Despite your best efforts at being a good model as a mentor, some might become argumentative and divisive. Sadly, this is not a new problem. Paul prepared Titus to deal with such. Read and discover what we should do in Titus 3:9-11.

Of course not everyone who disagrees is a divisive person. Some men may just need to be taught to be more gracious when disagreeing. “Let’s agree to disagree agreeably.” Sometimes a (younger) man may have issues with authority. Perhaps his dad was abusive, and now he has a chip on his shoulder toward any authority figures. Paul began chapter 3 stating- “Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient…”(3:1). Granted, that may be harder for a man who had an abusive father, but he now has a heavenly Father to help him and us as well.

Throughout church history, there have been divisive disagreements over the proper interpretation of the Bible. But Paul said to avoid quarreling about such things because these are unprofitable. In contrast, one verse earlier, Paul said that devoting ourselves to doing good is excellent and profitable (3:8). As with the Marines, we are looking for a few good men- men who will devote themselves to doing good, not causing division and destruction.

Sometimes, a divisive man may seem very spiritual. He is convincing and talks as if he has a hotline to heaven.  I’ve dealt with such people. It’s near impossible to reason with them, even from the authority of God’s word, since they are confident that God has revealed to them the true meaning of the Bible. Another military motto we adhere to is, “No man left behind!” We will help any man that is wounded and wants to be restored to God and to the mission (see Gal.6:1-2). But that motto doesn’t apply if the man is fighting against you-being divisive. To paraphrase Paul’s directive in dealing with such a divisive man- it’s three strikes and you’re out (3:10).  We don’t need anyone lobbing hand grenades in our midst.

This letter to Titus gave him God’s strategy for conquering the island of Crete for Christ. It centered on giving the people godly examples and exhortations to follow. Paul ends his letter with concluding comments. Read 3:12-15. Paul would send a couple of his outstanding, spiritual military officers to fill in for Titus, who was then to join Paul at his winter base of operations. Other vital men on mission were to be helped in any way necessary to further the cause. Then a final reminder is given- “Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives.” 3:14. They were to no longer be like their lazy neighbors (1:12). Paul had strong words of warning for those who were lazy in 2 Thess.3:6-15. “Keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.” (2 Th.3:6). So when seeking out a protégé, make sure he has a good work ethic, that he’s happy to help and serve others, not sponge off them.

1.-What is one thing that stood out to you from anything we’ve covered today?

2.-Write out on your MP3 card, “Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good…” Titus 3:14. Then do the Did it. Men, you are also doing good by going off to work faithfully. Titus would have been delighted to have such great models for his people. I am too! “Grace be with you all” Titus 3:15

Words Worth Repeating
Roger Vinlasaca wrote- Thank you Lord that because you sent Jesus to die on the cross and raised Him from the dead on the third day, we have been redeemed from all sin. And we have been set apart to be zealous for good works. May we continue to be strong in our calling.

Dave Heidekruger wrote- Heavenly Father, we praise you for transforming our hearts that were once sunk in ungodliness and worldly pleasures. By your grace that brings salvation, continue to purify our hearts and refresh our desires to live for You as we anticipate your glorious appearing.

  1. 1. Devisive people can become like cancer as their argumentative ways and ant- system personalities drag other's positive attitudes down as both sides now become non productive. Instead of focusing on the prize, our Lord, they are focused on being right and proving an argumentative point, which most of the time is of no consequence. They draw other good men down as they pull their focus of God's mission and turn it to combatting an unimportant issue. Now our movement forward and being used by God for his purpose is halted and we are not productive toward the Kingdom. Reprimand him 2x to let him know of his divisive ways, then cut off contact with him if he continues. Cancer spreads-- so cut it out early to avoid the spreading-- so we can be more effective.

    1. How true it is. Jack, It sounds harsh to cut off contact, but we cannot allow it to spread to the rest of the body of believers and kill God's mission.

  3. 1.- Titus 3:14 "And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful."

What a great exhortation for us followers of Christ, that we should be actively engaged in doing works. Just like pastor Mark has been teaching us that it is not enough for us just to come to church on Sunday and expect the leadership to reach out and minister to other people. But rather we all need to get involved in doing good works so that we can be a positive testimony for God.

  4. 1. What really stuck out to me is the difference between living a profitable life versus an unprofitable one. Focusing on the unimportant, unprofitable, useless things can take away from the essentials of Christianity.

  5. 1. "Throughout church history, there have been divisive disagreements over the proper interpretation of the Bible."
Due to our brokenness and sinful nature, there's always the potential for misunderstandings that CAN lead to disputes and dissension. I often hear non-believers ask "Why are there so many different "Christian" religions/denominations?" Or make a statement such as, "Just look at them, they're so called "Christians" and they can't even get along with each other! Let's heed Paul's exhortation in 1st Corinthians 1:10 "I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought."

  6. 1) What stood out is Titus 3:14 Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives.

This is our calling to arms. Arm ourselves with the word of Christ. A commitment of putting the big rocks first. There is always an urgent need with believers. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of speaking with a young man that was not saved. Brother Tom and I urged him to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We planted and watered the word of salvation. We pray that our work leads Miguel to accept Jesus and that God continues to grow his faith.

  8. What stood out to me as well as it did for Sam was Titus 3:14 "Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives."

I also believe that the word good could be interchanged with the word right and or just in the verse. If you are doing right and or just then it is pleasing in God's eyes.

  9. 1) The bad attitude portion. The fact that it can weild intence and devistating consequences. The fact that at times others see it while you are blind to it. The fact that it sets the tone for everything you say and do, it can turn kind words to sarcasm!

  10. 1) One thing I learned was how to respond to divisive persons who want to engage in foolish, useless controversies, arguments and quarrels in Titus 3:9-10. Paul says to avoid wasting time in arguing with them, but warn them (with the Word of Truth) once and then twice. After that avoid them and have nothing to do with them. We should do it with the proper attitude expressed in Titus 3:2. We should not slander them, but remain peaceable (keep our cool); stay considerate – (not be mean) and in humility – realize that they are warped, and sinful and are self-condemned. God has much more excellent and profitable things for us to be doing for others.

  11. Antonio, I think our bad attitudes comes from our thinking about the wrong things. When we realize we have a wrong attitude, that's when we need to replace what we are thinking about. Titus 3:1-2 are great verses that will adjust our thinking and change our attitude. " Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men."

  12. 1.What stood out to me is that we are not obligated or encouraged to reason or tolerate divisive people but rather have nothing to do with them (after 3 strikes). It seems to me that God does not want us to be distracted from the mission of winning souls, to get caught up in prideful bouts of who is right. The energy it takes to have an argument can be so much more productively used to talk to people who are receptive and seeking answers.

    1. Awesome insight Kentrayle. It does take energy to have an argument, so let's be quite picky about having them :)

    2. Very good Kentrayle! As I have recently been having to deal with a person slipping into false teaching, I realized just how much thought time it is consuming as well.

  13. I have thought many times on whether to be debatable and argumentative about the things of God's word, but I am reminded that we are to be peace-makers just as Jesus is the prince of Peace. I know that a good debate can help us to sharpen each other and build each other up but the becoming meaninglessly argumentative will lead nowhere. Ultimately we combat each other and follow the author of confusion where we need to know the real enemy in our nature and the enemy of this world. Quarreling has led to such a separation into such things as differing denominations with largely differing beliefs. Personally (even though differences exist) the centrality of the Gospel should reign supreme. All things considered to Model effectively for our Protégés we must then model Peace, but at the same time be the warriors in the Spirit, in the battle that God has called us to.

  14. 1.-Titus 3: 10 "As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him" I find this to be such a surprising intervention for God's people. So often in our post-modernist way of looking at things, we tend to over-emphasize God's love an inclusiveness and minimize God's sense of justice or and/or protection of his people. I believe that the wisdom of protecting a fledgling flock like Paul was suggesting to Titus was the right thing to do as it is when we have to protect others from divisiveness.

  15. 1) “Keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.” (2 Th.3:6).
A powerful verse to keep in our hearts. Like it says in 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NIV) Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
This caught my eye to be watchful of who we hang around with. I was watching basketball the other day and I saw the coach put a player in during the last minutes of the game. He was not the best player on the team but he was the best player for that situation. Though the coach probably had other players that can shot the three. He needed a guy to help on defense. The coach could have followed the media or the crowd but the coach knew what he needed to win that game. I feel I should do that to find the right protégé. Not to follow what is in the air but to follow GOD's instructions he puts in my heart.

This caught me as rightfully so, through the holy spirit we are enabled to give mercy, to be mindful, to forgive others who have offended us or confessed to sin and so as models, servants of one another(imitating Christ) we are to restore, heal that person of such.
But if person keeps doing "what's not right" than avoid such a person.

Despite your best efforts at being a good model as a mentor, some might become argumentative and divisive." -- I am doing my best to pick my battles very carefully! There always seems to be "small fires" all around me that can drain me of my energies and focus and time (especially at work). I choose to put out the "Major fires" that are most essential to what I am trying to accomplish. In my Christian walk, I am doing my best to NOT argue about foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. I keep watching myself that I do not become too proud and become divisive as well. Oh Lord, please help me to remain humble and teachable :)
